I fell for the paranoid billionaire in witness protection. The one I'm supposed to keep alive.
Look, I know how this sounds.
One day I'm the sheriff of a sleepy Oregon town with nothing but fog and bad coffee. The next, the FBI drops a whistleblower and his eleven-year-old daughter on my doorstep and tells me to keep them breathing.
Roland Steele is everything I don't need—rich, suspicious, and way too good-looking for a man who organizes his spice rack by frequency of use. But then he holds my hand during a storm like I'm the only safe thing left in his world.
His daughter starts calling me for "investigative consultations" about her true crime podcast. And those walls I've spent years building? He finds every crack without even trying.
I start staying for dinners that turn into midnight conversations. I catch myself laughing at his terrible jokes. I stop pretending I'm only checking the locks.
Then the threats stop being warnings. Someone puts a hit on the man I love—and I'm the only thing standing between him and a killer who knows exactly where to find us.
Falling for him might cost me my badge. Losing him would cost me everything.
This gender-based role reversal is brilliant !!! Roland, a single dad, is a witness in a federal crime case. Sherriff Maren Carwyn, a former soldier, is assigned as part of his protective detail. The attraction is immediate and grows stronger with each passing day. The more time that Maren spends with Roland and his precocious daughter Lila, who is one of the best parts of the storyline, the more paramount the outcome becomes. A really good book !
Great story, different from the norm. She’s the Sheriff and in control of safety, protection and catching the bad guy. Love the role reversal, both great characters but his daughter I feel steals the limelight at times. Both are broken and have walls as high as Everest, but what a great time watching them fall.
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
