The Third Cross - The Story That Changed Eternity

Rate this book
Two criminals were crucified beside Jesus.
One mocked.
One believed.
This is his story.
Told through the eyes of the penitent thief, The Third Cross draws readers into the final hours of the crucifixion with vivid historical detail, emotional intensity, and theological depth. From the dust and darkness of Golgotha, a condemned man watches prophecy unfold, listens to words spoken through agony, and comes face to face with a mercy he never expected.

This is not a retelling softened by familiarity. It is a reverent yet unflinching portrayal of Roman crucifixion, interwoven with Scripture, particularly the haunting echoes of Psalm 22. As the hours pass and hope seems impossible, the thief begins to understand who the Man on the middle cross truly is—and what His suffering means for the world.

More than a historical narrative, The Third Cross is also a devotional journey. Each chapter invites readers to pause, reflect, and engage more deeply with the biblical text, making it suitable for both personal reading and group discussion. The accompanying study guide includes leaders’ notes, participant reflections, and theological insights designed to foster meaningful conversation, especially during the Easter season.

Written with historical care and spiritual sensitivity, The Third Cross is for readers who long to slow down, sit at the foot of the cross, and see the crucifixion not as a distant event, but as a moment that still speaks—personally, powerfully, and eternally.

I love, love, love this book!! The Third Cross is a gripping and deeply moving retelling of the crucifixion of Jesus, seen through the eyes of the man crucified beside Him. Craig Minty combines historical context, emotional depth, and spiritual reflection to create a story that is both relatable and profound. The narrative draws readers into the tension, fear, and awe of those final hours, making the sacrifice of the cross feel immediate and personal. I absolutely loved this book. I sobbed reading the sinners prayer. I will absolutely be using this book in conjunction with my bible studies. God Bless you and all the work you do🙏 Thank you for this ARC copy and for allowing me the honor of reading it. This review is my own. Definitely a 5⭐️ read for me.

The PERFECT Easter Season Read!

From the first page, The Third Cross pulls you off your couch, out of your bedroom, away from wherever you are reading, and puts you on the road to Calvary with Jesus Christ.

Minty writes with both creativity and fidelity to the biblical narrative, tracing what it may have been like for the thief crucified beside Jesus, the one who heard those sweet words, "today you will be with me in paradise."

We follow this character from Pilate's praetorium all the way to his final breath, watching "the Man" who he comes to know as "the Messiah" the way a bystander might have: wide-eyed, unable to look away, and slowly undone by the weight of what's being witnessed. His narrative insights take us further than most have ever gone in following Jesus' journey to Golgotha, encouraging us to really grapple with the life-changing, reality-altering significance of what happened that day.

"Whatever this was — it wasn't just a man's death. It was love — naked, bleeding, shamed — walking willingly towards the grave."

Not a crumb is left on the table in this short but significant fiction book.

Every important moment Scripture records for those last hours of Jesus' life is presented with such clarity and poetic grace. You can feel how deeply Minty pored over the biblical text, pulling dialogue and narrative thread together until something both artistically composed and scripturally honest came together. As the story crescendos and the horror of the cross comes into full view, I couldn't stop reading and could not turn away. It felt like Lee Strobel's clinical description of crucifixion in The Case for Christ brought to life. Terrible, beautiful, yet totally purposeful. Instead of explaining grace and redemption, Minty's writing allows you to FEEL it, to experience it as the crucified thief does. This book hit me right in the heart and reminded me why Christian storytelling matters.

The story never jumps between characters or timelines. It stays with the thief as he journeys with Christ, keeping our eyes fixed firmly on the cross and on Jesus. It isn't too long either, the perfect Lenten or Easter season read. I read it, and then revisited its pages during Holy Week, finding it deeply impactful. I can imagine myself returning to it year after year and reading it to my children when they're old enough.

Because the narrative is SO rich, I'd love for this book to be made into a dramatized audiobook or movie one day. I think it's perfect for an Easter-season small group, or for gifting to a loved one year-round.

Bravo to Craig Minty for this amazing contribution to Christian fiction!

I got the opportunity to read this book. Insightful and thought provoking. Through the eyes of the criminal on the cross.... the unimaginable pain, the jeering and the mocking and through it all...absolute silence.
The criminal believed and received grace- the heart of the gospel of Jesus. He acknowledged his wrong, he did not justify his actions and even in the midst of intense pain, he spoke out against the other man on the cross.
The Third Cross by Craig Minty is a fictional perspective of the crucifixion from the eyes of the repentant man on the cross. It reaches in and pulls out the deep emotional journey and gives a glimmer of the pain and suffering Jesus willingly passed through because of His love for us. As we continue in our daily lives, meditate and ponder on the greatest sacrifice, draw close to Him and experience His peace just as the criminal received it with open hands.
The Third Cross by Craig Minty is filled with Bible study plans and guide for a deeper walk with God, one that encourages and uplifts. The Third Cross- a reminder of the Greatest love of all.

I read through this Bible study with my family over the course of the last 2 weeks & it was incredibly thought provoking. It really put into perspective of when Mark writes “And they crucified him,” that sometimes we have a tendency in our day to day lives to forget the true suffering that Christ chose to endure for you and for me. The author really took the time to help you see & think about the crucifixion through a raw lens.
Towards the end of the study the question is asked, “What is one truth from this session that you want to remember when you think about the cross and grace?,” and we each had a different answer. 🥹♥️
What a beautiful book that I was blessed to receive.

Also, of note, the appendices in the book were super helpful in shaping the timeframe and really got me into my Bible even more, learning some new things!
I highly recommend!

The Third Cross is a powerful book that invites you to reflect on the sacrifice Jesus made on the cross — told through the eyes of the third man who was also dying that day.

Craig does an excellent job bringing this overlooked figure into focus during the final hours of Jesus’ journey to Calvary before He was crucified. The storytelling is thoughtful and moving, helping you see those moments from a different and deeply personal perspective.

Each chapter also includes reflection questions that encourage you to pause and think more deeply about the message.

It’s an excellent and meaningful read.

I recently received an ARC copy and was not obligated to post a review. All opinions are my own.

After reading The Third Cross - The Story That Changed Eternity, by Craig Minty I found myself pondering, contemplating, and understanding in a way I never had before. Am I so different from the man who was crucified alongside Jesus. I hope not because this book has reminded me that we are all either the one criminal or the other. Minty's vision and his ability to relay that vision are exemplary. This is an excellent read.

This book beautifully captures the heart of the gospel through the story of the thief on the cross. It reminded me that salvation was never about having a perfect past—it’s about turning to Jesus with a sincere heart. The perspective was powerful, humbling, and deeply reflective. A moving read that stayed with me long after I finished.

In The Third Cross, readers witness the crucifixion of Christ through the eyes of one of the two criminals who was crucified beside him. As the criminal describes what he feels, we come to understand something of the unfathomable pain Jesus must have felt. As the criminal describes what he sees, we come to understand something about why this man, who is mentioned only briefly in scripture, recognized Jesus for who he was and received salvation in his dying moments.
This book is not easy reading, but it is important reading. I had to put it down more than once, not because I wanted to stop, but because I needed time to process and ponder. I wept at times. But I kept coming back to finish reading it, and, in the end, my sadness and sorrow were replaced by joy and hope, like the man on the third cross. I highly recommend this book to anyone seeking a deep, meaningful reflection on Christ’s death and resurrection.

The author is super nice and was very giving with my wife with this book. But the book itself was amazing. It definitely opens your eyes more hearing this story from another perspective and makes it much more deeper.
