Jason Aaron grew up in a small town in Alabama. His cousin, Gustav Hasford, who wrote the semi-autobiographical novel The Short-Timers, on which the feature film Full Metal Jacket was based, was a large influence on Aaron. Aaron decided he wanted to write comics as a child, and though his father was skeptical when Aaron informed him of this aspiration, his mother took Aaron to drug stores, where he would purchase books from spinner racks, some of which he still owns today.

Aaron's career in comics began in 2001 when he won a Marvel Comics talent search contest with an eight-page Wolverine back-up story script. The story, which was published in Wolverine #175 (June 2002), gave him the opportunity to pitch subsequent ideas to editors.

In 2006, Aaron made a blind submission to DC/Vertigo, who published his first major work, the Vietnam War story The Other Side which was nominated for an Eisner Award for Best Miniseries, and which Aaron regards as the "second time" he broke into the industry.

Following this, Vertigo asked him to pitch other ideas, which led to the series Scalped, a creator-owned series set on the fictional Prairie Rose Indian Reservation and published by DC/Vertigo.

In 2007, Aaron wrote Ripclaw: Pilot Season for Top Cow Productions. Later that year, Marvel editor Axel Alonso, who was impressed by The Other Side and Scalped, hired Aaron to write issues of Wolverine, Black Panther and eventually, an extended run on Ghost Rider that began in April 2008. His continued work on Black Panther also included a tie-in to the company-wide crossover storyline along with a "Secret Invasion" with David Lapham in 2009.

In January 2008, he signed an exclusive contract with Marvel, though it would not affect his work on Scalped. Later that July, he wrote the Penguin issue of The Joker's Asylum.

After a 4-issue stint on Wolverine in 2007, Aaron returned to the character with the ongoing series Wolverine: Weapon X, launched to coincide with the feature film X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Aaron commented, "With Wolverine: Weapon X we'll be trying to mix things up like that from arc to arc, so the first arc is a typical sort of black ops story but the second arc will jump right into the middle of a completely different genre," In 2010, the series was relaunched once again as simply Wolverine. He followed this with his current run on Thor: God of Thunder.

Okay. People are REALLY sleeping on Absolute Superman. What’s coming together in this new arc (starting with issue #15) feels like it’s about to go completely off the rails.. in the BEST way possible.

I’ve never been that into Hawkman (I’ve always leaned more Hawkgirl), but his Absolute debut was awesome! His rugged, violent energy mixed with that cocky confidence and warped moral compass is honestly kind of terrifying, and insanely entertaining. I loved that his interaction with Superman stretched across the entire issue, and how much lore was unpacked through their conversations. The Doctor Fate name-drop?? Superman learning that other heroes exist in this world?? All of it ruled.

It’s also kind of hilarious that Clark can hear everything happening around the globe, save people from nonstop disasters, and yet still has no idea Batman exists. But honestly? I love that. It really shows how focused he is on protecting everyday people rather than paying attention to legends or symbols.

I was really curious how they’d handle Lois and Jimmy at the Planet, and that twist was genuinely fun and totally unexpected. I’m very interested to see where that storyline goes next as well.

But the real jaw-dropper for me? Parasite. He looks incredible. I immediately started spiraling with questions.. does Superman fight him alongside Hawkman? Does Hawkman realize he’s been working with the wrong side? Is this all building toward something even bigger? Maybe even an Absolute Black Adam fight?? I don’t know, but whatever’s coming feels EPIC.

And lastly… I never would’ve guessed they’d portray Lex Luthor the way they did in that Brainiac encounter.. but I LOVED it. He feels nothing like traditional Lex, and that makes this version so compelling. The moment he chose his family over working for the government, I just knew Brainiac was about to completely ruin his life. I’m honestly dreading (and excited for) seeing how that unfolds next issue. Will Lex turn evil? Will he work with Brainiac before betraying him? Or does this all evolve into a deep, personal hatred for Superman?

Either way, I’m fully locked in!! This run is building toward something special, and I really think Absolute Superman has the potential to stand out among all the other great Absolute titles right now.

This hit exactly where I want a Superman story to land. The decision to team Clark up with Absolute Hawkman is inspired — the contrast between a seasoned, battle-worn Carter Hall and a still-developing Superman adds real texture to the issue. Watching them feel each other out, philosophically and physically, is half the fun, and I really hope Aaron lets that dynamic breathe for a while.

Clark still hasn’t truly faced an equal yet, and the book is very aware of that. There’s a sense of tension building — like the universe is lining up something that’s finally going to test him in a serious way. Meanwhile, the Brainiac–Lex thread quietly keeps simmering, and it’s clearly headed somewhere dark.

Tonally, this issue fires on all cylinders: sharp humor, high energy, real gravity when it counts. Then there’s the gut punch of remembering Ollie’s fate from the Absolute Evil special, which adds an undercurrent of dread when Carter starts dropping names from his past — especially Wesley Dodds. The implication that an Absolute Sandman exists (or existed) is both exciting and unsettling. I’d read that book in a heartbeat.

This one stuck with me. The characterization clicks, the story feels confident, and everything lands squarely in my wheelhouse. An easy five stars and an easy recommendation — absolutely worth the cover price.

Like the latest issue of Absolute Wonder Woman, Absolute Superman really feels like it’s hitting its stride. We’re past the opening salvo and really into the book now. Superman is part of this world, and he’s figuring out his place in it. Zombie-esque Absolute Hawkman is the perfect foil to Supes’ perspective, a literal devil on his shoulder trying to corrupt him. I don’t think it’s going to work!

Hawkman is more experienced than Superman, and the two clash a bit. Brainiac tracks down Lex Luthor.

Hell to the yes that was amazing. That is not what I expected at all from the end of the last issue where Hawkman flew right up to Superman. We just learned so much about this character, he truly is a “hero” defined by the natural principals of this universe. One that believes they should work within the system to do good, as much as that can be described as anyway, instead of doing what Superman wishes to do and is right to do: ripping the system down completely. And OMG Ferreyra on art benefited this story even more than the last, the grittiness fits perfectly with the worldview and style Hawkman is bringing to the table. This is amazing. But in order to jump into this issue, we need a bit of a history lesson to a fateful expedition in the nation of Kahndaq led by Carter Hall while being funded by Lazarus, circa 1940. There, while dangling with his partner in a vertical antechamber, Carter found his symbol…the lighting bolt of Teth-Atom. Alongside this cool tease fie what is to come later, the walls are lined with treasured possessions, including a golden mace with hieroglyphics that almost seem to point to gifts from people Carter can’t believe. The tomb itself is located at the bottom of the chamber, and it seems Carter’s partner is intending to send him on a fast track down as he has been secretly paid off by the nazi’s this entire time!! Suddenly he cuts Carter’s line, sending Carter scrambling for the side of the wall to hold himself up. If the legends are true about the power held in the tomb, Carter refuses to let a monster like Hitler get his hands on it. But all his partner cares about is the money and doesn’t really care about any ideas of good and bad guys. Carter begins to skip so he reaches out for the only other thing within reach…the gold mace, which immediately forms around his hand. Suddenly the peacemakers above, remember this is a Lazarus operation and they have much lower tech gear and helmets compared to the modern day, hear screams coming from the chamber. And they watch in horror as Carter rises from the chamber with a giant mace and metal wings, literally bathed in blood from killing his former partner at the very start of his career…how fitting.

But then we jump back to the present day as Hawkman approaches Superman near 80 years later, claiming he is here to help Superman. But Superman really isn’t listening, as Hawkman attempts to talk Superman continues to whoosh off to save more people. A plane door falling over Cleveland, a guy he thought was choking but was really just laughing weird, and really this isn’t a good time…suddenly Hawkman grabs Superman by the wrist and tells him sternly not to fly off again. But there are people in trouble and Superman wants to help them, but Hawkman is talking and he isn’t used to people not listing when he speaks. Hawkman’s grip surprised Superman, causing him to ask if he isn’t from Earth. Actually Carter explains he is from Gotham, before it turned to hell, and he automatically pulls back his mask and the bandages surrounding us face to reveal his true and still very youthful face as he former ally introduces himself as retired archeologist Doctor Carter Hall. But during the war when he was busting nazi skulls…they called him Hawkman. The suit itself is alien and made of nth metal from the planet Thanagar, although he’s never been there himself he asks if Superman has heard of it as he may be from somewhere close. Superman asks how Carter knew he was an alien…because Superman just told him, and he clearly has a lot to learn.

But trouble is brewing back in metropolis. Talia is not taking Lazarus going down well and the anti terrorism unit known as GATES is currently taking a lot of assets from the Lazarus vault. This promoted Talia to deploy a loyal peacemaker for one specific purpose…destroying a specific crate. As he yells out “Lazarus means forever” suddenly the crate exploded and a large group of tiny tentacles rushed out and immediately began to grab hold of the nearest guard. Although I would be disproven later, I couldn’t help but think Hawkman was sent out to talk to Superman purely as a distraction from this action. Not that big of a stretch, tbh, especially based on the conversation Hawkman proceeded to have with Superman. Hawkman proceeds to explain that neither Superman or Hawkman are the first men who could fly, over the years there have been hotshots that have popped up and gone and does Superman really think a lot of his kind popping up at the same time is a coincidence? Superman really isn’t sure, he doesn’t know who Hawkman is referring to as all he pays attention to are the screams. Hawkman proceeds to list a lot of names of people he probably and we know for sure he helped kill, Iron mundo, Dodds, Doctor fate, Oliver Queen. None of those names mean anything to Superman, and that’s because according to Hawkman they were all stupid. Hawkman explains that you can’t change the world overnight and if you want to make a difference you have to stay out of the spotlight, unlike what Superman has been doing…which is of course against everything Lois has been trying to build with painting Superman as the symbol of hope. Hawkman wants to show Superman how to do it the smart way, so he doesn’t end up like the others. And for starters he advises that Superman stop his feud with Lazarus. He may have wounded them but he can’t destroy them, there are very powerful people that won’t let that happen and instead of trying to beat them…he should learn to work with them. I grow the same angry look across my face as Superman. These are people who tortured him, brutalized his friends, tried to manipulate him into mass murder and subjugating the planet and Hawkman wants Superman to work with them?! Hawkman starts to mention some crap about the “bigger picture,” but begins to notice that Superman is about to run off again, and mentions that if he tries they are going to have a problem, especially after Hawkman apparently stuck his neck out for Superman. So Superman agrees, he won’t run off without Hawkman, instead opting to wrap him up in the dust of his cape and drag him along at super speed, lol.

Elsewhere we see Lois going in for her first interview at the daily planet. Except of course this being the absolute universe the building with the large shiny daily planet globe is not where the daily planet is anymore. That’s been turned into condos and the real daily planet has been shunted to a small asbestos ridden building with a death trap elevator down the street. How does Lois know all of this, because she ran into former metro desk editor Perry White as he was walking out of the building after being fired and replaced with a younger guy who can work for way less. The planet used to be great and now it doesn’t even have Perry. The moment Perry leaves, Lois gets a few texts from Lois. He for the job but is wondering what a “metro desk editor” does, lol. But Lois may be later to her interview, as suddenly screams fill the city as those tentacles from earlier appear to have gotten a lot larger.

The moment Superman stopped in metropolis and Hawkman had a moment to collect himself, he took his mace and slammed Superman into the ground to try and teach him a lesson. Superman is already pissed at this as there are people who clearly need help that Hawkman isn’t paying any attention to and doesn’t seem to care, instead challenging Superman to see if he can save himself. Superman lets him have it with a large blast from his laser eyes which see to bounce right off Hawkman as if they were nothing. Superman has a lot of powers, but he doesn’t have the fighting skills to back them up…Hawkman has the power and the fancy moves to run circles around Superman. Superman goes in for a punch, the form is weak and Hawkman is able to smash his arm and knock him back before he can get close. But Superman still has a lot of powers, and suddenly became really ready to fight backs grabbing the mace and cracking it ever so slighting before punching Hawkman through multiple stories of a building and into the subway system below. This has to be one of my favorite pages, because it gives us an x-ray view of the buildings and subway as Hawkman crashes through it, but they also make it so the x-ray looks like it was seared open with lasers. Hawkman rushes up for the next round, but then I finally get the confirmation I was looking for that he is not an intentional distraction. Hawkman looks over in pure shock as a giant monster is making its way down the street, sending out tentacles to grab onto people as it goes. This being the absolute universe, who else could this giant pink monster be than parasite. MUHAHAHA! But I still have one question hanging on my mind…how does Hawkman stay so young? Is it just the tech or is he doing something even worse behind the scenes to sustain himself. This has been fantastic learning about Hawkman, fully entrenched in the systems of this world that he kills other upstart heroes that make too much of a public name for himself so he can continue to operate in the shadows doing whatever he believes to be righteous. I’m really hoping Superman gets a moment to check Hawkman on those ideas, when was the last time he actually did something good? Because the only things he can seem to talk about are busting nazi skulls and other super heroes that have gone down. I need a reality check ordered, stat.

But I have to admit that’s not even the mkt terrifying section of the issue, as the end of this issue takes us over to Missouri where the happy family man Lex Luthor is sitting on his front porch talking to a man who looks a lot like his mainline self, who is also trying to convince him to leave his family for a time as he is the perfect candidate for a really classified government project. But no matter what brainiac, clearly in disguise, can say, no matter the amount of money, or even the mention of the project being a focus on Superman…Lex isn’t interested. He has a fantastic life with his family and his two kids, Alex and Lena, and they’ve even gathered all of his close family and friends to celebrate his birthday in the backyard. Lex declines the offer but offers for the man to stay around and have some cake. But brainiac won’t be leaving, he admits he is disappointed as this is not the Lex he was expecting, he doesn’t have any of the ambition he isn’t meant to, but that’s okay because brainiac can be quite convincing. Suddenly before Lex’s eyes, brainiac shifts out of his human disguise to reveal his true form and the two giant chainsaw attachments he added to his hands, as in his words he can be quite motivating and he had a lot of people he can work through to get Lex on his side. I haven’t read the ultimates over at marvel, but isn’t there a story where someone is manipulated into becoming Doom? Does this feel a lot like that? Not a diss at all, because this is awesome and terrifying. Brainiac is carving himself a Lex Luthor whether Lex wants it or not.

Last issue was one of my highlights in Month 1 of getting back into serialised comics and immediately went onto my regular pull-list so this review is harder to judge as a "first issue"

First of all - what a great cover - it suggests a slug-fest and that's what we get. This Hawkman is a lot stronger than the regular one.
Speaking of the cover, I was also glad to see Ferreyra back on art duties again. I'd thought he was just doing a fill-in issue but it's looking more like an arc. He honestly gets better with each issue and while he impressed me on his TMNT run, I think the exposure on this title will have Marvel and DC competing for him. The action and use of panel layouts is really inventive and expressive (something the absolute books are great at) and emphasises action without resorting to single panel splash pages. I actually like the double pages that have wide-screen panels in them.

Story wise, the issue is also strong. I get the impression Aaron is doing a cynical older generation vs youthful optimism and how it was ften feels like a cycle of the older generation beating said optimism out of the younger one. This is dialed up by the fact that Hawkman is a century old and therefore even more pronounced regarding the generational gap. Hawkman is a character that's never really appealed to me but this villainous take actually works well. He has such a patronising tone (his use of "son" and "boy" made my skin crawl each time) and acts as if he has all the answers whilst coming off as a man who has been beaten and defeated by the system. I'm curious as to how an Indiana Jones archetype wound up like this and I hope it's not just that the nth metal corrupted him.

Hawkman comes off as sinister throughout and when he mentions a list of former "naive" heroes I was curious about their stories and whether Hawkman dealt with all of them. This was one area where I was left in the dark as I think Hawkman may have killed at least one of these named heroes in an absolute special? An editorial box would have been appreciated if that was the case.

The fight is explosive and has elements of Neo Vs Agent Smith or "man of steel" Superman Vs Zod in the sense there is a lot of damage to the city and one has to wonder about people being injured/killed.

What I like is how we get a main point for the issue (Hawkman and Superman meets) while several other villains are being developed alongside or in the background. There already appears to be a more Godzilla like take on a classic Superman villain, while there is a side-story of another Superman villain trying to create another one. This latter development is interesting as it begs the question why this particular villain has been intentionally sidelined in this Darkseid infused universe and says a lot about their power and potential ambiguity. This part of the story reads like a villain version of the boxes from marvel's "Ultimate universe".
All of this leaves me with the feeling I'm getting value out of a single issue read which is important given the actual cost.

Another strong issue and I look forward to the next installment. I'm also waiting for the announcement of where Ferreyra will become the regular artist on a big DC/marvel title - as it seems inevitable.

Overall = 5/5
Writing = 5/5
Art = 5/5

Will I read the next issue? Yes

Did I need to read previous issues/series? There are a couple of gaps but everything to understand this fight is present.

Will I read previous issues? Already working on it with the first trade collection.

What a fun issue. This series is lacking compared to the other two trinity but we finally get some steam. I mean, the series has been great, but I feel like we are about to enter another level of greatness. Hawkman is delusional, crazy, and blind to justice. He thinks what he’s doing is correct, so that’s gonna be hard to change. I want him dead. He killed my guy Oliver queen so screw him.

Superman continues to be a kind man, saving anybody and everybody. Until he starts fighting with Hawkman who HIGH KEY COOKS him. Supes doesn’t know how to fight, so he might get exposed in the future. They both stopped fighting to see that Lazarus unleashed a HUGE parasite. Could this be the same parasite from Wonder Woman! ? Who knows yet.

And lastly, and this one hurt so much, and damn it also made me laugh. For some reason Braniac has a project in mind for Lex, who shrugs him off because he has family. So what does that mean? I understood it the second I read that and started to feel bad for Lex. Braniac pulls out his damn chainsaws, and removed the incognito mode he was in, and seems like he’s going to kill Lex’s family so that now he has nothing left to stop him from working with Braniac. DONT DO IT writers. Let Lex live in peace please haha

- We learned the origin of Carter Hall.

- Lazarus Agents attacked G.A.T.E.S. What is that ?

This Absolute series seems to be trying to make itself a normal Superman series????

Lois and Jimmy going to work at the globe? I thought we were trying to make the characters different. Superman hearing everything on the planet except Wonder Woman and Batman who are creating havoc in their retrospective comics…sounds like Superman.

A little disappointed in how they’re treating Lois and Jimmy already but I’ll get over it. Hawkmans introduction in the last issue was badass. The character design is insane. Almost better than the original design. I understand what he’s trying to tell Superman in his lecture but I feel like it’s all just a way to transition Superman into doing small town battles…something they written him into and now how to write him out of. Name drops of other heroes was also cool.

Brainiac is definitely the most intriguing character so far. Disgusting himself as Lex Luthor while meeting a real Lex Luthor. Trying to sign him up to work for him but Lex would rather just spend time with his family. An answer Brainiac cannot accept…

We get a brief backstory into how Carter Hal became Hawkman but we didn’t get any information on how his powers work. In his backstory we get some foreshadowing of Black Adam and possibly Shazam. Hawkman is no joke either, he stays on par, going punch for punch with superman. Hawkman has a guise of being “one of the good guys” but it’s clear he has been hired by Lazarus to stop Superman from trying to take them down yet he also wants to possibly mentor aka manipulate Superman. It’s unclear what his true intentions are. A parasite has been set loose on Metropolis under the orders of Talia. Will Superman and Hawkman put their differences aside to work together and take it down? Brainiac arrives to Lex Luthors house, disguised under some sort of hologram as a buisness man. Lex denies his offer to “go into business” with him but Brainiac would reveal himself, with chainsaws for hands, as a means to change his mind.

I really hope This lex Luthor isn't corrupted and remains a good man somehow, seeing a good guy small town Lex and superman being friends will be interesting. and I am probably one of the biggest fan of Main universe Hawkman but this version of Hawkman is just genuinely so much cooler. this arc is definitely better than previous one already on every level. and maybe I can still hope for Hawkman redemption?... Another solid five star issue, and I really hope absolute supergirl gets introduced somehow in future it would be interesting how they handle her ( plus she's my favorite DC character so it wouldn't hurt to see her Absolute universe version).

The fight between Superman and Hawkwan was fantastically illustrated! It's kind of funny to see Lex Luthor having a life reminiscent of Smallville's Clark Kent. I do find it interesting that Superman isn't aware of the others such as Batman and Wonder Woman. In iterations of the Justice League that I have seen, Batman had been the reluctant one to join. In the Absolute Universe, Superman seems like he would be the one reluctant to join, in my opinion. I'm really looking forward to seeing what threat will bring them all together. It will also be interesting to see if Superman can cause Hawkman to switch sides.

I love the way the Absolute Universe is reimagining our heroes' greatest rivals. This issue gives us our first real look at the Absolute Lex Luthor, and in a huge subversion of expectations, he seems like a totally normal guy. But the genius of it is that it fits the Absolute Universe's pattern of giving our heroes' main villains what used to be that hero's biggest advantage. So in this universe, it's not Superman who had a happy family life and a great small town upbringing; it's Lex Luthor.

But then Brainiac shows up! What a crazy ending! I can't wait to see where that goes!

Pulling in more DC characters and dropping names. If Hawkman fought nazis then why is he dressed like one? His arrogance is more annoying than that of Ras or Savage. There are several excellent twists here. Absolute Superman and Absolute Wonder Woman are totally the superior titles right now. I'm bummed that I couldn't get into Absolute Batman, but I'm looking forward to the Trinity's inevitable meeting.

Superman meets Hawkman.

Of course like typical comic book superhero meetups they start out by fighting each other.

You know that old tired trope. You know just once shouldn't they meet and say hey how you doing let's have a cup of coffee and compare notes... But no they got to fight.

Hawk gives him a brief history of previous superheroes, Golden age names are thrown around; meanwhile brainiac is recruiting a Lex Luthor. Then it goes crazy from there.

I liked the Carter Hall/Hawkman introduction. Very ambiguous what his motivations really are at the moment, which is fun. Lex being just a "regular guy that is content with his life" is such a funny but interesting concept. I kinda feel bad that Brainiac is going to force his hand by taking the simple life away from him :(

Things aren't as bad as I feared. But, I still don't see why I would read this version of Superman, when I would prefer to read the really hopeful, mainstream version. I understand that there are higher stakes in this universe. But, maybe I don't want stakes? Maybe I just want comfort?

Hawkman was a dick, but he's right. Superman is quite naive. He doesn't need that bird's training, though. As for Jimmy. Good luck as the new editor. You'll need it with the Parasyte calling.
