"Raised Immortal: Resurrection and Immortality in the New Testament" by Murray J. Harris is a comprehensive, scholarly review of the Biblical texts on, well, resurrection and immortality. This is an intermediate to advanced work that is, painfully at times, excruciatingly detailed. In fact, one wonders if when Dr. Harris walked into the grove of trees he noticed there was a forest. As a result, this is not a popular-level breezy read.
Now, if it is your goal to know all the Scriptural and extra-biblical references to resurrection and immortality, then this is the book for you. It probably should be classified as a reference book, and here is why. This book has a substantial table of contents and a robust index. Thus, if one were studying a specific topic regarding resurrection or immortality, then a quick perusal of the table of contents would lead the student to the relevant portion of the book.
As I read this book I became mired in the details. Did I mention there were a lot of details? As a result, I do not place this book back on my shelf assured of a comprehensive understanding of the subjects presented; in fact, I am wondering just what I read. That is not to say that this book is not worthy of your time and attention. I WILL use this book in the future as a reference work and I will be happy to have it. But I am loathe to pick it up again and read it cover to cover. Even in my immortal state I simply don't think I could do it. Happy reading!
