Academy of Villains #3

Lessons in Trickery

Rate this book
The story continues in Book 3 of the Academy of Villains series—a dark academia romantasy inspired by Hekate and Hermes, perfect for fans of Zodiac Academy and Shadow and Bone, featuring a secret relationship, divided loyalties, demons, titans, and a deadly quest.

In a kingdom where magic is slowly disappearing, an evil king hunts witches, brands their kind as traitors, and forces mages to serve under his endless rule. But the king hides many secrets, and one of them, when unearthed, will shatter the balance of power and unmask the mythic monster the world once mistook for a god.

Bellatrix Bane, a witch hiding among mages, never meant to fall for her enemy. After a Heartstring binds her to Skymage Dorian Mistfall, her destiny becomes a death sentence.

The witches curse her to die by the Death Sands, an enchanted hourglass that will stop her heart when the final grain falls. They give her one chance to survive: seduce Dorian, betray him, and steal his secrets before her time runs out.

She will need his help to find a gate concealed by ancient magic, revealed only by a locator spell requiring bones, blood, and ashes from the bloodlines that sealed it.

As Titans stir in the mountains and rumors of a lost heir spread through the realm, witches, mages, and the Starmarked Seven brace for a magical war that will decide the fate of their world.

Every time I read a new book in this series I think , this one is my favorite, I love this couple the most so far. This book did not disappoint. Its just stunning how every book not only delivers such amazing action, development of the world to such a degree that I am even more invested, gives me a new couple I am totally cheering for, while showing me all the couples I already love AND teasing the upcoming couples so I am like feral to read their stories. I LOVED the grumpy x grumpy action in this book of Bellatrix and Dorian. It was so fun getting to dive into their backstory and delve into their personalities more. I legit was anxious at one point to find out who was going to be "the person of interest" and I was wrong and not even upset slightly that I was wrong and the reveals in this book were just stunning. I do not know how I am going to wait for the next book. Also major cliff hanger and one of our boys is about to go off the deep end and I can not wait to read it !!!!

Favorite Quote: "Some people follow the stars," I murmur. "Others walk straight into the dark."

This book has:
Mythology Retelling
Magical Academia
Grumpy X Grumpy
Dark Femme Fatale
Forbidden Romance
Fake Dating
Shifters, Demons, Witches and Titans
Dark Magic and Rituals
Secret Societies

At this point, this series is an addiction, and I’m completely okay with it lol. Being obsessed with a series like this is a good thing. Who doesn’t love escaping to a world of darkness with magic and romance? 🥰

Dorian & Ballatrix will instantly become some of your favorite characters. They definitely add more to the series and the group. It’s a dark academia romantasy with Greek mythology vibes and an epic love story inspired by Hekate and Hermes.

It’s the 3rd book in the series, so starting with the first book will help you understand each character and the world a bit more.

With this story, you get deeper into what’s going on and why. There’s some forbidden stuff happening that will keep you on your toes. Yes, it’s amazing. Yes, it’s addicting in the best possible way. Yes, there are more secrets and banter! I enjoyed every minute of it.

I truly love the fact that we get to explore a different couple with each book and still get to see familiar faces again. The author does an incredible job with the world-building and staying true to the story, tying everything together from both big and small details. Ever King’s storytelling will pull you in and grab your attention quickly. From a reader’s POV, she definitely delivers with each book, giving us more darkness, magic, romance, secrets, found family, and much more.

I highly recommend this to anyone who’s into romantasy.

Thank you, Ever King, for allowing me to be one of your ARC readers. Your stories and creativity are some of the best things I’ve gotten to experience.

ANOTHER 5 STARS

Book three gives us Dorian & Bellatrix (Hermes + Hekate). As we already know from the previous books, Heartstring Bonds are forbidden between witches and mages.

So what does that mean? It means we’re about to get into some serious shit with B & D.

As punishment, Bellatrix is being used by the witches to seduce Dorian and steal secrets from him and the Raven Society. Which - what the hell - you don’t exactly choose your Heartstring Bonds.

Book 3 was so action packed and the twist at the end??? *picks jaw off the ground*

I know I said Bastian & Layla were my favorites… but I think I’m officially more obsessed with Bellatrix & Dorian.

Tropes:
-grumpy x grumpy
-forbidden romance
-yearninggggg
-fake dating
-dark magic
-shifters
-demons
-secret societies
-magical academia

Thank you, @authoreverking for letting me ARC read!

When Trickery Meets Destiny: A Dark Romantasy That Refuses to Let Go

Rating: 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Lessons in Trickery is the kind of book that sinks its claws in early and doesn't let go. Ever King has delivered something truly special with this third installment in the Academy of Villains series. I'm still recovering from that ending, and I'm already desperate for book four. 💀⏳✨

If you haven't started this series yet, now is the time. You'll want to begin with book one because these stories interconnect beautifully. Each couple gets their own mythology-inspired romance while the larger fantasy plot builds toward what feels like an inevitable, epic collision.

The Setup:

Bellatrix Bane is a witch hiding among mages in a kingdom where her kind face execution. When a Heartstring binds her to Skymage Dorian Mistfall, the witches curse her with the Death Sands, an enchanted hourglass that will stop her heart when the final grain falls. Her only chance at survival? Seduce Dorian, betray him, and steal his secrets before time runs out. In this world, secrets are weapons, and love becomes the most dangerous gamble of all. 😱

Why This Book Captivated Me:

The ticking clock creates tension that permeates every page. King has crafted an impossible situation where love and survival collide, and watching these characters navigate that minefield is utterly addictive. 🔥

Bellatrix is sharp, conflicted, and carrying the weight of a curse that turns every choice into a countdown. She's not a victim but a strategist trying to outsmart fate itself. Dorian is honorable yet haunted, powerful yet vulnerable, hiding secrets that could shatter kingdoms. Their dynamic is electric without ever overshadowing the larger stakes. The forbidden nature of their connection feels genuinely earned, and their chemistry had me highlighting passages constantly. 💔

The Mythology:

The Hekate and Hermes inspiration creates mythic echoes throughout this world. You don't need prior knowledge to enjoy the story (King provides everything you need), but if you know the myths, you'll catch gorgeous parallels that add layers of meaning. She adapts these ancient stories into her dark fantasy world with both freshness and respect for the source material. 🏛️📚

The World and Stakes:

We're diving deeper into the mysteries of Ithaka, uncovering what happened to magic, and discovering truths about the king who rules with an iron fist. The Titans stirring in the mountains, the rumors of a lost heir, the Starmarked Seven... King layers secrets upon secrets, and watching them unravel is thrilling. ⚔️✨

The dual POV storytelling gives us both perspectives. We see her desperation and guilt, his confusion and growing suspicion, and the tragedy of two people falling for each other when everything works against them. The emotional payoff is perfection. 💕

This isn't just about one couple's happy ending. It's about breaking ancient curses, preventing magical wars, uncovering conspiracies that threaten entire realms, and dealing with forces that have been sleeping for centuries. Every choice ripples outward. Every revelation changes the game. And that ending? I need the next book immediately.

What Makes It Work:

King understands how to balance intimate character moments with epic fantasy stakes. This book feels both personal and sweeping, crafted with a storyteller's precision that keeps you turning pages frantically. There's a sense of looming, inevitable change that builds throughout, and it's immersive in the best way. 🌟

Fair warning: this book contains mature themes and romantic intimacy (17+ recommended).

Bottom Line:

If you love romance with morally tangled characters, forbidden love that carries real weight, mythology retellings, dark academia atmosphere, and plots that keep you guessing, Lessons in Trickery delivers on every front. Ever King has created something that feels fresh and compelling, and I'm completely hooked.

Now I'll be over here counting down the days until book four and trying to recover from that cliffhanger! 📖💔✨

Thank you to Ever King, as always, for the gifted copy that has left me emotionally wrecked in the best possible way! 💕 Woo Hoo!!

Thank you to Ever King for my ARC of this book. My obsession with this series keeps on growing and I tried very hard to fight my instincts to race through the pages and I tried to savour it but it was in vain and I devoured the book and now I'm in a hangover. It's fast paced, twisty, full of yearning, forbidden temptations and shocking revelations. This book delves more into the witches, hiding in plain sight and constantly on edge of being discovered. It gives us more world building by adding their knowledge of the history leading up to the present and really has the reader questioning the known and accepted facts. The ending, jaw dropping! Fantastic, twisty and addictive, I am feral for this whole series.

Bellatrix is outwardly cold, a little cruel and in control but inside she's vulnerable and torn, wanting desperately to choose her own path but is forced to follow the destiny the Witch Mothers demand of her, even having to prove her loyalty to them after they discover her bond to Dorian.

Dorian is fiercely protective, vulnerable only to her and fast becoming a new favourite book boyfriend! I love how this book really opened is eyes to the world around him and Bellatrix had him questioning why things were outlawed and what was right. I love Trixie and his bond to her as well.

The story is focused on the witches and blends seamlessly with everything we've read so far, giving the reader another perspective on everything. Dorian and Bellatrix share a heartstring bond and whilst Dorian is accepting, Bellatrix is shocked and struggles to come to terms with it. This isn't helped when her loyalty to the witches is called into question and the Mothers set her a task which puts her very life in danger if she should fail. They decree she must spy upon the Raven Society and report back and use her bond with Dorian to get what she needs. Determined to remain in control at all times with him and resist the bond she ruthlessly pursues her course. They quest to find the Colossal Gate and understand more, calling upon Demons, ancient texts and information from different sources to reach their objectives. All the while cracks appear in Bellatrix's facade and her loyalty is constantly in question on all sides.

Ready to launch into another round of trickery? Did you put down Dorian as a difficult little s*** who only talks with his fists? Did Edmund grate on your nerves in the past few books? Did you think Tobias was a cutie, yearning for Olivia - the shy and sweet Hexley girl?
THAT IS ALL ABOUT TO CHANGE!!!!

Again I was really happy to return to the Academy of Villains. I enjoyed wandering the halls of the academy again but loved the new places I got to visit as well. Ever King sneaks in some of my favourite mythological creatures (titans!!) and characters into this story about Bellatrix and Dorian. Yet another wronged female lead, strong enough to handle fighter Dorian. Ever King writes great antagonists: the Sevryn twins are morally black!!

Bellatrix has to proof her loyalty to the witches. Add a ticking time bomb and the recipe for a crash love story wrapped in mysteries, is complete.
The plot is not difficult as this book lifts you, with more information, straight into the next book. Not in a boring way: mystery thickens and the last chapters are filled with action and a twist, it leaves you a little hung over. I feel a little devastated I have to wait for the next book now...

I recommend reading this one with the playlist (see Insta/website of Ever King).

Thank you for the free ARC Ever King so I can share my honest opinion with the reading community. 💜

Thank you to Ever King for approving me to read this book, I’m rating it 4.0 stars.

As we follow on from book 2 the stakes remain just as high. The way the book unfolds we get a lot of new revelations, new allies and absolutely more danger. I have some questions which I hope to be answered in the continuing books of the series, my main questions surround the heartbonds and what these alliances are building up to.. I only know it’s going to be an insane conclusion once we get there.

The witches are quite terrifying and complex in this book, I also feel like we’ve only learned half the mystery surrounding them and their ways. I look forward to seeing how the ending of this book impacts the next instalment in the series.

Ummm wow that ending?! I need the next book like NOW?!

Once again another amazing book by Ever! Thank you so so much for the arc. I absolutely loved it & love being apart of the team!!

While I disliked how soft Dorian was throughout the book when it came to Bellatrix, he really made up for it about 65-70% in and holy shitttt, so hot!! I was blushingggg.

Honestly the ending is what really got me. The last like 100 pages are so action packed I could not put it down. The plot twists?? Truly was not expecting that!!

— releasing Jan 20

my rating: ★★★★★

aesthetic: 🐈‍⬛🔮🦉💀⚱️🩸🕯️📚⚖️🐍❄️

Lessons in Trickery is, without question, my favourite book in the Academy of Villains series so far. Ever King takes everything that worked in the previous installments and sharpens it into a story that is darker, smarter, and utterly addictive.

This book shines brightest in its Greek mythology retelling of Hekate and Hermes — a pairing that feels inspired, electric, and perfectly suited to the morally grey world of the academy. The mythological roots are woven seamlessly into the narrative, enhancing the magic system, rituals, and secret societies without ever feeling heavy-handed. If you love mythology reimagined with teeth, this delivers in every way.

The dark academia atmosphere is at its peak here. From shadowy corridors and forbidden rituals to whispered alliances and dangerous lessons, the setting feels immersive and alive. The story leans fully into its darker themes — deception, power, and choice — while still maintaining a sharp sense of wit and playfulness through its characters.

The romance is outstanding. The grumpy x grumpy dynamic paired with fake dating creates constant tension, biting banter, and an irresistible push-and-pull. Add in the forbidden romance element, and every interaction feels charged with risk. Their chemistry builds naturally, fueled by secrets, mistrust, and undeniable attraction — making the payoff incredibly satisfying.

I also loved the dual POV, which allows readers to fully experience both characters’ internal conflicts and motivations. It deepens the emotional stakes and makes their unlikely connection feel earned rather than convenient.

What truly sets this book apart is how confidently it balances plot, romance, and mythology. The twists are clever, the stakes are high, and the emotional beats land hard. By the end, I was completely hooked — already desperate for what comes next.

Lessons in Trickery is a masterclass in dark fantasy romance: smart, seductive, myth-rich, and impossible to put down. Ever King has truly outdone herself with this one.

Thank you so much to the author for sharing an ARC of this book with me !!!!

“I’d take her cruelty over anyone else’s kindness. I’d rather be undone by her hands than held together by anyone else”

“Touch her again and I’ll break your jaw”

I’m such a fan of this intriguing and creative Greek mythology inspired stories !!! This third book was everything I could have expected and then some. Bellatrix and Dorian’s story was enchanting, gripping and exciting. It was impossible, improbabile and yet inevitable.
It’s the good boy / bad girl dynamic that did it for me. That we don’t see that frequently. It’s him being absolutely and devastatingly in love with her, that he simply cannot help himself but he needs to be there for her, with her, however she wants. It’s the desperation in the way he loves her. It’s the moment she has to admit that he loves her too!!! It’s all to die for and it does leave you breathless by some simple exchanges they have!!! And the story and the journey they both have to face this time around !!! Involving demons, no less?!?! I love how it intertwined within the narrative of the other two books, creating a deeper and more complicated pattern that will have all the characters involved in it. And I can’t wait to figure out what’s about to happen in the next one (if that last chapter is any indication!!!)

“Maybe Dorian Mistfall offers the dark, quiet kind of worship that makes even a demon jealous”

“Power is only something you can claim when you’re brave enough to let go of who you are”

“Now be a good boy”

I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

Per usual, Ever has cranked out another five star read. This was everything I hoped it would be, and I just couldn’t put this book down. Tensions run high between the witches and mages, and between Dorian and Bellatrix. I’m still fascinated by the Heartstring bonds in this series. The yearning and unapologetic way that Dorian feels for Bellatrix gets you right in the heart. I don’t even know what to do with myself after that cliffhanger… this series is really kicking into high gear! I can’t wait for the next read.

First of all, I would like to say a huge thank you to the author for providing me with an ARC of this book. It was truly an honor, especially since I loved the first two installments of the series and was incredibly excited to dive into the third. However, unfortunately, Lessons in Trickery didn't quite deliver the same level of satisfaction for me as the previous books did.

The story jumped right into the thick of things, but I struggled to figure out the exact timeline and how much time had passed since the second book. At times, it felt like a standalone novel that could be read independently of the first two; so much happened across the series that I couldn't always see the "big picture" or how the events truly interconnected, which I found a bit frustrating. While the author clearly wants to pack a lot into this world, I often felt that the books are mostly linked by the characters themselves—specifically during the final chapters when the members of the Raven Society gather to discuss the plot. While the ending was definitely action-packed, for the majority of the book, I felt like nothing significant was happening until the very final act.

I missed seeing more scenes where the guys just interact with each other. I understand that each book focuses on a specific couple, but I would love to see more of the characters from the previous books because, in this part, it felt like they stopped being important outside of their own specific stories. This led to a feeling that no real bonds were being formed between anyone—and sadly, this applied to the main couple as well.

I actually liked how the end of the second book set the stage for Bellatrix and Dorian, picking up right where it left off: with a mysterious cat sleeping in Dorian’s room that everyone claims is a shifter. My only issue is that it was never truly explained why Bellatrix chose his room specifically. Sure, you could chalk it up to the Heartstring Bond, but for me, that felt like a bit of a cop-out. In this book, every emotional connection was explained away by the bond rather than being properly built up, like Lucian and Kiara’s or Bastian and Lyla’s. Dorian and Bellatrix’s relationship felt like it had no foundation other than the bond; there was no deeper explanation for their mutual interest. Most of the internal monologues were just Dorian repeating that he wanted to be with Bellatrix simply because he wanted to be with her. Because of this, I couldn’t really get to know or connect with them, which is a shame, because I felt so close to the protagonists in the first two books.

However! One thing I can’t deny is that the ending was incredibly exciting. It was packed with twists that left me with so many questions, so I will definitely be picking up the next book. I’m really looking forward to the fourth installment, and I’m keeping my fingers crossed that it will finally focus on Tobias and Octavia—I’ve been waiting for their story since book one!

3.75 / 5 stars 🌟

I’m always happy to return to the kingdom of Ithaka as Academy of Villains has absolutely become a comfort series for me. 🥹

I was so excited to receive an ARC for Lessons in Trickery because I knew Dorian would be my favourite MMC so far. And I was absolutely right. This man is 10/10 - the yearning and adoration from him is sublime and he is hot AF. Highly recommend 🤤💜

I also really loved learning more about the history of the witches and the fact we had to more in-depth introductions to Kaspian, Tobias and Edmund. I’m really looking forward to reading each of their stories, particularly Tobias’ after THAT ENDING?! 🤯

The reason I’ve only given this one 3.75 stars, which is the lowest I’ve given an Academy of Villains book to date, is because I struggled with Bellatrix and Dorian’s relationship so much. Bellatrix is just mean and although I actually really like her character, I didn’t like the way she treat Dorian at all. It does become clear on why she may behave this way and I think the complexity of her character was written very well, but I’m such a Dorian fan that I just kept thinking he could do so much better. Also I felt the relationship established WAY too fast in comparison to books one and two.

Although this slightly missed four stars for me, this isn’t a bad book. I just felt it was more of a filler to the overall world, there’s much more introducing of new elements rather than pulling the overarching plot forward, and I wanted Bellatrix to not be such a cow.

Thank you so much to Ever King, as always, for this ARC. I can’t wait to continue this series because how dare you finish like that! 😩

Ok, wow. This book is by far my favorite out of the whole series. This is a series with a storyline that just seems to keep getting better and better as we go. We went in deep with the world building in this book, I loved being able to see the added dynamic between the witches x witch hunters and being able to see the world expand beyond the academy was truly transportive. It really solidified my investment in the series.

The character development in this installment was so amazing. We get to watch both Dorian and Bellatrix grow into such strong and powerful characters. Uncovering truths and deciding who they want to be and what they want to fight for.

The dynamic between them instantly had me hooked. The way that Dorian is so cocky until Bellatrix handles him had me giggling uncontrollably. The library scene with her putting him in his place and him being exactly where he wanted to be was purely *chefs kiss* (IYKYK 😂)

Now, that cliffhanger????…. WILD!! I cannot wait to see who book 4 revolves around and what that plot line looks like! I need book 4 like yesterday!!!

I was granted the amazing privilege to be an ARC reader for this book. Thank you Everking for this amazing privilege! And oh my goodness. My head is SPINNING. like what is happening? what did I just read?

This author is SORELY underrated. I have read many books that are talked about CONSTANTLY all over social media but imo none of them are as fantastic as this one. this series is probably one of the best series I've ever read.

The pacing was excellent, the ROMANCE??? the balance between lore and romance was spot on. I feel like I wasn't too drunk on the Bellatrix and Dorian tropes because I was also buzzing to know what would happen lore-wise. This couple is the MOST interesting ship ever, like yes they are fake-dating but it gets a lot more dramatic and complex than just that and the way their relationship development was absolutely seamless, I think it was so so natural and perfectly done and I really love this ship.

I was off to a pretty slow start for the first 50 pages, but then I sprinted through the rest of the book all in one night and I don't know how I'm going to sleep at night after this. The book left off on a CRUEL cliff-hanger. i'm a little lost, I think i need a few days to defuse after all that awesome lore but this is in a good way because it makes me want book 4 even more.

I am so curious about which couple is going to be featured in the next book... Before Lessons of Trickery I was really hoping that we'd get to see a particular couple featured, but afterwards we got introduced to more of them that are just as intriguing, interesting and all have so much answering to do in the next books.

The references to Greek Mythology are both subtle and not-so-subtle at the same time and I really live that. There are so many aspects that remind me of it but they're so very different at the same time. I think for mythology lovers, this is perfect for you because it has such a strong essence in the story, but is super unique and individualised in it's own way.

If you think that what I'm yapping about sounds interesting but you have no clue what I'm talking about, I think this is ur sign to go and read the Academy of Villain's series and find out for yourself! U will not regret it one bit.

Anyways, this book was amazing, 5/5 stars from me.

🖤 THE VIBE CHECK
Golden Retriever MMC, but he’s dangerous and deadly. That’s Dorian Mistfall and I am obsessed. Bellatrix has him wrapped around her finger, and they both know it.
"Love is just another kind of curse—and this bond to Dorian Mistfall is a dark spell I know I’ll have to break." (Page 13)

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Flawless Execution
Spice: 🔥🔥🔥 Explicit Scenes
Format: Ebook

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

✨ The Curated Plot
Witches are the enemy of Ithaka. That’s what the mages have been taught to believe. Witch magic is uncontrollable and dangerous… or so they say. None of that matters to Dorian Mistfall once he realizes his heartstring bond is with Bellatrix Bane, a witch hiding in plain sight and spying on the mages for The Iron Circle. Bellatrix never wanted to be bonded to the enemy, let alone a Raven. The witches look at her like a liability, a traitor and curse her with the Death Sands. If Bellatrix doesn’t prove herself before the last sands of the hourglass drop, she’ll breath her last breath. To make matters worse, the titans are waking up in the mountains, witch hunter territory, and they are getting antsy.
"A demon rises like smoke from the circle, and for one breathless second, I’m not sure who I should fear more. The creature . . . or her." (Page 69)

🐈‍⬛ Masterpiece
Masterpiece. Each time I finish one of the Academy of Villains books, I think there is no way it can get any better. Well, it does! Bellatrix and Dorian are aware of their heartstring bond from the start which only makes matters worse for Bellatrix. She tries to keep it a secret from the witches, but they have eyes and ears everywhere. The chemistry between Bellatrix and Dorian was perfect. Tell me why I was getting chills whenever Dorain said Bellatrix’s name!? She is in charge, and he doesn’t care. He would let her do absolutely anything to him. There are a few spicy scenes in this book, just enough to satisfy but not overshadow the plot. The story line flowed effortlessly. I had trouble putting this book down because I needed to know how Bellatrix was going to keep herself alive and also keep Dorian. She is incredibly loyal to the witches and their cause, and it was hard to predict what was to come. We also get a peek from Lucian’s POV as Kiara grows more powerful as well as learn more about the mysterious Stonehart brothers, and OMG. WHAT!? Just thinking about that ending is giving me CHILLS. How am I going to survive until book 4!?
"Maybe Dorian Mistfall offers the dark, quiet kind of worship that makes even a demon jealous." (Page 74)

⭐ The Cozy Conclusion (Rated: 5/5 Curated Coziness)
Lessons in Trickery has everything that I love about Romantasy. If you are looking for a series to start with intricate world-building and lore, unique magical systems, and characters that you will fall in love with, you need to start Academy of Villains!
"There’s just something about the night that makes everything look softer than it is. Dreamy. Something about the silence that calms my racing thoughts. I belong to this kind of darkness. It feels like I’ve stepped into a memory I haven’t yet lived." (Page 187)

The Tropes We LOVE:
• Dark Academia Romantasy
• Greek Mythology Retelling / Hermes & Hekate
• Dark Magic & Rituals
• Black Cat FMC / Deadly Golden Retriever MMC
• Fake Dating / Fated Love / Forbidden Romance
• Touch her & Die / Grumpy x Grumpy
• Secret Societies
• Shapeshifter, Titans, Mages, & Witches

Favorite Quotes:
"The future of this kingdom is thick with the promise of violence. The promise of a magical war." (Page 9)

"Or the girl foolish enough to feel something real—something soft and dangerous—when he looks at her." (Page 55)

"Dorian Mistfall tastes like a curse written for pleasure—one that was never meant to be broken." (Page 64)

“Am I . . . your pet?” I huff a laugh, glancing sideways at him. He’s half-smiling, eyes glinting with mischief. “Do you want to be?” I fire back, playful. But his smile fades, and then he looks at me with a seriousness that steals the humor from the moment. “I’ll be whatever you want me to be.” (Page 73)

"And power is only something you can claim when you’re brave enough to let go of who you are." (Page 92)

"The easiest way to control someone is to let them believe they’re in control. Dorian Mistfall is starting to make me question which of us that is." (Page 104)

"He’s beautiful like this— like some ruined soul offering worship at the altar of my undoing." (Page 154)

"He fucks me like it’s his personal mission. Like he’s trying to erase every thought from my head but thoughts of him." (Page 195)

As always, thank you so much to the author for the opportunity to read this early!

Overall: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.75/5
🌶🌶/5

I swear each book gets better and better.
If you love Greek mythology references, fantastic world building, and books you just cant put down? This series may just be for you!
.
.
.
- for the RECORD. Not a full 5 stars just because of a few typos here and there, or wording that felt awkward instead of a nice flow, but really I think thats the only "negative" words I had about this book
- the consistent world building is amazing. Its so well thought out, and its so descriptive and visual. I love that it's describing the surroundings without the surroundings needing a whole paragraph, its just part of the scene writing. It flows really nicely.
- this one is a real enemies to lovers trope in the best way. The pure yearning that they both have for each other in their own way is just addicting to read! I cant think of any other way to put it, but seeing two people love each other so fiercely and learning that its okay to be soft with one another? I adore it.
- it was super sick to be able to see the contrast of how witches use their magic vs how makes use their magic. And especially ⚠️spoiler⚠️ how Dorian and Bellatrix's magic fuses together, two halves of the same coin. One so raw and the other so (pun intended) by the book. The magic system is the same but its used so differently! While also still complimenting each other really well in times of need.
⚠️spoiler over⚠️
- ⚠️spoiler⚠️ I was so hoping with all of the nods to Greek mythology that we would get something with the titans. Conceptually ive always thought titans are so cool and absolutely insane. And i think its really awesome that the author chose to bring such "old magic" back into the realm of Ithika. ⚠️spoiler over⚠️
- the overall character vibe for both Dorian and Bellatrix being that theyre super scary and intimidating - and they are sometimes! - switching to just this deep desire to be with one another and protect each other. UGH I just love them!!
- Dorian is just the best. The best way to describe him is that he's like a pit bull- everyone thinks he's so scary and then he turns around and is just happy that someone wants him around and shows him a little affection.
- Bellatrix is genuinely such a badass. I love that we got to see such character development from her and watch her grow and have real meaningful friendships with the other girls in the group. I think watching her icy exterior melt was really fun to read
- if you've been keeping up on these books, you'll he pleased to know that while Bellatrix and Dorian's book is definitely about them, like with the other books, the other characters are involved! Its not just a singular plot line about one couple, its a million different things blending together or better said being woven together. Here are these separate but equally important stories and the author is weaving something beautiful.
- these stories build so well on each other it really keeps you coming back for more.
- I know it's maybe not conventional, but i think yearning should count as a kind of spice. This book is for the yearners. If you get it you get it. Its a beautifully tragic feeling amd its captured masterfully.
- while I have a love/hate relationship with series that aren't fully out yet before I start them, this series is the easiest bunch of books to come back to and pick up from where I left. I always look forward to when the next one comes out!
- a CLIFF HANGER ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! MY HEART! I wait with bated breath for the next book.
- I adore these books and I am so genuinely honored to have been able to be an ARC reader for all 3 so far. I hope to continue working with you the author if you're reading this, because seriously these books live rent free in my brain. I love your writing style and your nods to Greek mythology, and I think you are so good at your job 🧡

Thank you so much to @authoreverking & @rrbooktours for my #gifted copy of Lessons in Trickery! This review is comprised entirely of my own thoughts & opinions, & is based on the copy I received.

This was another win for the Academy of Villains series! I loved Lessons in Trickery so much - just like with the last book, we are focusing on a new couple with a new retelling! This book is a Hekate x Hermes retelling and we get to see Dorian and Bellatrix fall for each other! I loved them so much. And again, just like with the last book, Ever King manages to keep this world and story fresh while simultaneously building on the lore and plot that she’s started in the previous books. I was hooked and absolutely devoured this one and literally this is probably one of my new favorite series!

Bellatrix and Dorian are just the best - the grumpy x grumpy dynamic was so good, and honestly Dorian is probably my favorite MMC so far! The grumpiness while also being such a golden retriever for Bellatrix just made him so easy for me to love! He’s my favorite blend for a MMC - soft literally only for Bellatrix but would burn the whole world down for her. These two go through so much in this book, and the forbidden aspect of their relationship just made it that much more addicting to read!!

The dark academia aesthetic was literally at its peak in this book and I was about it. I loved the vibes and thought it was just fantastic!

Overall, this series really just keeps getting better and better and I’m officially hooked and invested. I love how each book expands the world and we get to see our favorite characters from the previous books while still focusing on a new couple. I feel like seeing the plot unfold from different character’s perspectives is really creating a unique reading experience and we are getting to see everything from all angles.

I cannot wait for the next book in this series!!

Bellatrix Bane is a witch. So far neither the mages nor the witch hunters found out how many witches are hiding in plain sight in the academy and among them.
When a Heartstring bonds her to Dorian Mistfall, a member of the Raven society, the witch community wants a proof that they can still trust her. They curse her with the Death Sands, an enchanted hourglass and when the final grain falls her heartbeat will also stop. Her task is to seduce and use Dorian to find a lost Gate.
Hidden secrets get revealed, Titans stir again and are a risk for everybody and the search for a Gate is done by several societies but why is it hidden and what will happen when somebody tries to open it again?

This is the 3rd book in the Academy of Villains Book and I really love this series!
I really like the world and characters created here and how the author is providing with every book some more information about the bigger picture, bigger storyline.
I
really enjoy all the secrets we have here, the different societies with their own agenda, the friendships developing here even so they seem so totals different but most of all who gets a Heartstring with whom and how the pairs handle it.
This is not a cozy, lovely fantasy book. Now this is darker and this time we also have demons and Titans which need to be faced.

Bellatrix and the Skymage Dorian as the main characters.
I like Bellatrix as her family was killed when she was small and she grew up hating mages and what they did and still do to witches. She is trained to spy for the witches and when unwanted a Heartstring binds her to a mage her whole world starts crashing down. The witches see her as a traitor and don´t trust her any longer, worst of all they are more than willing to risk her life. So sure she is not happy about the whole Heartstring, wants to use Dorian. I liked how bit by little bit their relationship changes.
To get to know Dorian so much better was a joy for me. Honestly he was really absolutely patient from my point of view with Bellatrix. What he risks and is willing to do to save the one he loves is great written.

We also learn more things about the bigger picture in this kingdom.
But still many questions remain open. Where is the missing princess? Why was the Colossal Gate hidden and most of all should it be re opened and what is awaiting the world should this happen?
It seems like a magical war is coming not only between the mages and witches which might decide the fate of their world.

I absolutely recommend this series when you are interested in darker fantasy, academy setting, magic and lots of secretes which needs to be revealed.

"I know what the problem is. You don't know what it is to be loved."

Solid 4.

Hello Book Three! I honestly wish this installation had been planned to release in October because it would have been peak for the season (and the festivities). However, that's not the point here (but I do recommend you pick it up to read during spooky season if you're a seasonal vibes reader.) Greek Mythology reimagined in a dark academia setting and Hekate and Hermes no less? /chef's kiss

Coming from Book Two, the plot still moves forward, and not really hard to pick up. We learn that Bellatrix Bane and Dorian Mistfall are bonded through a Heartstring bond, and to prove her loyalty to the witches, they curse her with the Death Sands, which essentially is a ticking time-bomb until her heart beats its last. The stakes are just as high (emotionally), and we are faced with various revelations, new faces, and more dangers. The witchy vibes are at their peak in this installation. We get demons, forbidden rituals, secret societies, and most of all, constant frustration and stress (as a reader).

You feel bad for how Bellatrix treats Dorian, but then you understand her inner turmoil. Dorian breaks down these walls and eventually allows her to be vulnerable. There were times when I was kicking my feet because Hi, Dorian. The yearning here? THE RESPECT? Love you.

AND KING? THAT ENDING? Seeing how this seems to be a pattern... We might get thrown into a whirlwind of theories, and then King will throw us off guard in the next one.

Bless the Everkingdom Army. I'll be here for book four. Thank you for the e-arc for an honest review.

Some tropes you can expect, and particularly why I rated it the way I did (some tropes I am not a fan of and where most of my deduction came from, and that's ok! I still enjoyed the book):
  ◤ Greek Mythology retelling
  ◤ fake dating
  ◤ forbidden romance
  ◤ grumpy x grumpy
NOTE: SORT OF I got more of the golden retriever mmc x black cat fmc vibe. He's a simp for her.
NOTE #2: I was sort of getting Kain from Vampire Knight vibes with Dorian. Was that the intention, King?
  ◤ witch x mage
  ◤ fated bond

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Spice: 🌶️.5

Each book in this series keeps getting better and better. It grows darker with each story yet the pieces of the plot come together little by little but it leaves you on the edge of your seat (or bed, depending where you read). The ending...the PLOT TWIST. I was trying to guess who an item was shining for (keeping it spoiler free) and I was so close but still SHOCKED. And to learn certain identities...well, I was not expecting THAT.

I could not keep to a chapter a night before sleep because I just had to know what was happening next. The forbidden romance, the trouble that Bellatrix finds herself in both within the Academy and with the witches, the torn alliance Dorian finds himself in between, the Slytherin common room vibes, the academy of magic, the secrets that are starting to spill little by little. It's all sooo good!

Normally I don't go for guys who are too soft, but Dorian is the PERFECT blend between soft and will also not hesitate to kill someone, especially for Bellatrix. He is just soft FOR HER and no one else. He's not afraid to get his hands dirty, he has secrets of his own, and I loved the balance that he has. I also loved his internal struggle of his alliance between Bellatrix and the Ravens Society.

Bellatrix is also one of my favourite characters. She is black cat energy (and is also a black cat) but is also fun, sarcastic, and cheeky. Watching her slowly fall for Dorian against her will even though he falls first is so sweet but also intense because of the forbidden elements between them. I love the grumpy x grumpy dynamic and the fake dating which makes the tension even more intense.

I absolutely cannot WAIT for the next book and the next set of characters. I already know it's going to be even darker and more intense than this one! I highly recommend getting into this series if you're craving dark academia, romance, mythology, and fantasy. This series really does deliver and it gets better with each book and each pairing.

Thank you again to Ever King for letting me be a part of the Royal Court and for letting me be on your ARC team 💜

Thank you to Ever King, to the publisher and to StoryOrigin for the ARC on exchange for my honest opinion.

I just finished the book about 20 minutes ago and WOW. Just... WOW!!! I still have so many thoughts mixed inside my head.
This series just keeps getting better and better. As we move forward and focus on a new couple, they (as individuals and as a couple) bring new elements to the table and to the group we follow from the start. I love the worldbuilding and how it expanded more on this book, I love the main story and how it keeps going forward and getting more plot points added to it in each book and, on this one, oh there was so much going on...
I love Dorian and Bellatrix. It started as a different kind of relationship but Dorian is a golden retriever for her. When he got to be like her and "break" her facade, that's when she got to be her with him and I LOVED it.
But I gotta talk about the last 15% of the book or so. WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT EVER? From the moment Dorian used the Heartstring to use her magic against the Stonehearts, I was like WHATTTT??? and my jaw dropped. And then when the bloodshard ring glowed, I mouth-screamed WHAT DO YOU MEAN, HE'S WHAT? about 3 times. After that my jaw was dropped for the rest of the book. Not wanting to be very spoilery but from the reaper thing to the heir thing to Lilith, to Edmund to Tobias, to Heartstring to Octavia... How can someone manage all theses emotions and all these plot twists and HUGE revelations? I had to stop a few times and reread what I was rereading cause I wasn't believing. Just. Too. GOOD!!!
Ever King a round of applause to you and I don't know how I'm going to handle the wait till the next book.
This is not a 5 stars book. As I said, the world-building, the plot, the dominatrix relationship, the found family in this, the unimaginable twists and revelations... This is a 10 out of 5 stars book! Incredible 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻

I recommend everyone who loves everything I mentioned above to read this series. It's a must-read and completely underrated!

Tropes:
⚬ Dark Academia
⚬ Morally Grey MC's
⚬ Unique Magic System
⚬ Greek Mythology Inspiration
⚬ Enemies to Lovers
⚬ Dual POV

This is book 3 in the Academy of Villains Series and let me tell you.. i LOVE it! Each book keeps the story so fresh as it is focused on new couples each time, but you also see and frequently interact with the past couples.

By this point you really have started to get to know each and every member of the Raven Society and the Starmarked Seven! I wish i could immediately get all the rest of the character books asap cos I JUST NEED TO KNOW EVER PLEEEASEE!!!

Lessons of Trickery looks into Dorian and Bellatrix. Dorian is soooo swoon worthy, he is so devout to Bellatrix and i cannot cope with how h o ttttt it is that he does everything she says omg! Plus, consent is sexy. The whole not touching until she says? MELTINGGG!

Bellatrix shows as this cold, unfeeling B *COUGH* I MEAN witch. Where as there is really so many layers to her. She's been used her whole life, wishing she could go her own way but staying loyal to the mothers is the only route she knows to stay safe and surrounded by people. You can see the fear of loneliness and its heart-breaking.

I really enjoyed deep diving into the witches this book, it gave us more of a background into the whole world and magic system, which omg i think is sooo cool! Atticus really intrigues me, he gets everything right so i feel we all need to listen to him more seriously!!

Ever did such an amazing job with the descriptions. She always words things so beautifully and in such a good way that it is so easy to picture exactly what she is describing and being able to hold onto that mental image throughout al the books.

Now... is this a controversial want? Because i realllly want a book on Dantoremus... I know what happens later but STILL! I really likes him despite everything

BOOK 4 NOW PLS EVER!?!?!

The third installment of the Academy of Villains series by Ever King, Lessons in Trickery, follows the powerful Bellatrix Bane and heartthrob Dorian Mistfall.

Dark academia and Greek mythology collide in this compelling story set in a kingdom where magic is slowly disappearing and where witches are being hunted. Bellatrix Bane is one of those witches and has been infiltrating the Academy for years now. But ever since Kiara catalyzed the Heartsrings, Bellatrix finds herself being bound to her sworn enemy, Dorian Mistfall. To prove her loyalty, she has to pull the strings and steal Dorian's secrets.

The characters
Bellatrix is an absolute icon of a lethal lady. Despite the established dichotomy between witches and mages, the tensions between her and Dorian slowly destabilize this. It starts with themselves: doubtful whether they can trust each other. It's hard to change the things you've believed in for years, but these two show that it is possible and that it even lets you see beyond that. While Bellatrix is most often cold-hearted towards Dorian, you still sympathise with her, because she has her duty to her coven (and the fact that mages have been hunting her kind to extinction). The way it's written shows the vulnerable side of her and the inner struggles she has.

Dorian is the complete opposite. While he's been portrayed as the most dangerous or cold one of the Raven Society, he's walking after Bellatrix like a lost puppy. The only dangerous thing is that he'll literally unlive anyone who as much as lays a finger on her. Possessive? Sure, but do I mind? Naaahh.

As with the previous book, this one continues the main plotline and brings the other characters back occasionally. This makes it easy to follow and remember what happened previously. I love it when the whole cast of characters is together, broadening the focus on the main couple (Bellatrix and Dorian), making it more adventurous and thrilling than just following the romance between them.
The pace is perfect, and I can't wait to read what's next and meet the other characters.

Thank you, Ever King, for letting me join the Royal Court!

Lessons in Trickery is where this series sharpens its fangs and sinks them in.

This installment felt darker and more intoxicating than ever. From cursed hourglasses and bone-deep magic to whispered prophecies and looming war, the atmosphere is drenched in shadow and consequence. Every chapter feels like sand slipping through the Death Sands itself—urgent, dangerous, and impossible to look away from.

Bellatrix Bane is such a compelling, morally tangled heroine. A witch forced to seduce her enemy to survive? The internal conflict, the desperation, the quiet unraveling of her heart—it all hit hard. And Dorian Mistfall… the tension between them was palpable in the best, slow-burn, breath-held way. Every glance, every near-confession felt loaded with magic and betrayal waiting to happen. The sexual tension in this book? Immaculate.

I loved how this story balanced high-stakes plot with deeply character-driven moments. The looming threat of Titans, the mystery of the lost heir, and the brewing magical war all add layers of intrigue, but it’s the emotional weight—the choices, the loyalty tested, the impossible odds—that truly shine.
Dark academia, witches, forbidden bonds, ancient magic, and a romance that feels like a curse and a salvation all at once. I can never get enough of this series, and Lessons in Trickery only cemented my obsession.

Forever seated. Forever waiting for what comes next.

I am so proud to be a member of the Royal Court of the Everkingdom. I had the pleasure of reading the Lessons in Trickery eArc in exchange for my honest review!

Always remember, reading is extremely personal and very subjective, we are all allowed to have different opinions. That is absolutely okay and beautiful. Happy reading. ✨🩷🫶

If you haven’t read any of the Academy of Villains series yet, what are you waiting for? Lessons in Trickery is Book 3 in the series, and I loved this one just as much as the first 2 books!

There was so much to love in this book - a grumpy x grumpy duo, mythology inspired retelling (Hermes & Hekate), morally grey characters, forbidden romance, fake dating, dark magic, shifters, demons, secret societies, dual POV, and so much more.

The Heartstrings struck once again, this time binding Bellatrix and Dorian together. There’s only one problem - Bellatrix is a witch hiding among mages at the academy. Dorian couldn’t care less about that, but Bellatrix is fighting the Heartstring bond hard, understandably so.

Due to a curse placed upon her life by those she trusts most, Bellatrix approaches Dorian with a fake dating plan. Dorian will take whatever he can get, and Bellatrix aims to seduce him in order to obtain the information and secrets she’s seeking. And seduce she does! Y’all, the spice in this one was… 🥵

Their dynamic and relationship pulled me into the story quick, and it didn’t overshadow the larger overall plot. Bellatrix and Dorian are both flawed in their own ways, and they’re each keeping too many secrets on behalf of their respective secret societies. Once they start opening up to each other, I was so excited for them to see their pieces of the puzzle start coming together.

Where there are secrets, though, there’s bound to be betrayal. Some betrayals hit harder than others in this book, so buckle up for those.

The ending of this book left me with more questions that I didn’t even know I should have. 😂 And I am dying to get my hands on Book 4 already because what a cliffhanger we were left with! There were reveals and revelations that I was absolutely not expecting, and I cannot wait to see where that takes us in the next book.

Thank you so much to Ever King for the gifted copy of this one! I loved every second of it. 💜🏛️✨

May we pretty please have Book 4 now? 😅
