I was hoping that it would be wrapped in one book but it wasn’t so that took a star off the table for me. Everything else was well executed loved the main characters and supporting cast too. I will say there was def some unexpected twist and idk how I feel about them. What I will say is hopefully the follow on books will elaborate or build better tension between Crown & Aire because currently it just feels shallow and typical. Like ohh you feel slighted so now you about to cause destruction and for what? Instead of supporting your brother you hating. It just feels played out in this type of story. It’s a standard formula so unless you do something so out of the box it’s starts to become anticlimactic for me. I also don’t get why they won’t kill him, like yall as a family claim disrespect isn’t tolerated yet that’s all Aire does and sow division.
I also feel like authors gotta start giving us more to love about the shit starter. For me it’s like show me on a deeper level why our FMC is willing to sacrifice her life, career her decades of hard work. Like nothing about Aeson gives worth tearing your life up for, he’s immature clearly stupid and seems to have some entitlement issues. So in order for me to feel like oh it makes sense she’s willing to sacrifice we should see something sweeter, more sentimental, cus that “he’s the only family I have left” falls flat because he’s not good to Nirvana, he doesn’t listen and he feels like she owes him.
I also feel like authors gotta start giving us more to love about the shit starter. 72 Hours with an Unhinged Menace is a dark, gripping African American romance that leans unapologetically into obsession, power, and the dangerous allure of crossing lines you swore you never would. Told through the dual perspectives of Crown Mekhari and Nirvana Crockett, the story thrives on tension emotional, psychological, and irresistibly magnetic.
Crown Mekhari is the embodiment of controlled menace. Cold, calculating, and accustomed to absolute authority, he views people as leverage and mistakes as things to be erased. Nirvana is meant to be temporary seventy-two hours and nothing more. Yet from the moment she refuses to fear him the way she should, Crown’s carefully maintained control begins to fracture. His internal conflict is one of the novel’s strongest elements: the slow, unnerving realization that what he calls control is actually obsession, and what he labels temporary has already rooted itself far too deep.
Nirvana Crockett is equally compelling. Rather than breaking under Crown’s dominance, she awakens within it. Her defiance is not reckless but deliberate, transforming fear into awareness and awareness into desire. Nirvana’s strength lies in her refusal to be reduced to a pawn; she meets Crown’s menace with a quiet intensity that shifts the balance of power in subtle but impactful ways. Despite the dark undertones, the novel balances its intensity with humor through standout supporting characters. Jashari and Thorian are absolute scene-stealers, providing comedic relief that feels organic rather than forced. Their presence adds warmth and levity, making the world feel fuller and more lived-in.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, Brickhouse delivers villains that are deeply unsettling. Brittney and Aier are thoroughly unlikeable, with actions so cruel and calculated that there is no room for justification. Their betrayal of blood and friendship alike adds emotional weight and moral tension to the story. Aeson’s gullibility proves frustrating, though intentionally so, while Nero emerges as an effective antagonist with depth. Giovanni, perpetually entangled in trouble, adds yet another layer of chaos to an already volatile world.

Honestly, this book had me going through every emotion there is. It’s so much going on in the book that everything is a cliffhanger. Every chapter is a cliffhanger and you don’t know which way the story is going to go. You definitely wrote this book girl I can’t wait for part two.

A page turner but some of the writing causes resets
This was a great Mafia book. More than just alpha men running around. String women, indepth descriptions. However, the author needs to make sure the flow is correct. For instance not sure if pages are missing but the conversation jumps when discussing the marriage the first time and then the conversation jumps when Aires and his brother in law are talking-first he says he clutching the door then turns around to speak then he is speaking from a chair. And there are other examples and it resets the story because now you have to pretend it didn't happen to break up the energy you have for the story. It reminds you-oh I am just teasing something although the writing is so good you tip into the world like its true. But it is definitely a page turner. Not sure if I want to read about Annika next though. However, I can stay on Crown and his fiancee all day and the Bri and Jaberi's crazy story line. And Zionlooks like a great continuation but not sure about Annika.

All the Kings Men Couldn't Put Humpity Dumpity Together Again
I have a lot of thoughts on this read. Mainly because, after the spectacle of the Surrogate to... series, which I did enjoy at the time, I've been evaluating my fandom, since some things I noticed then but hoped maybe would shift or be different in other series. Thoughts:
📃 I stopped and started this book 4-5 times. My first hang-up was over the nefarious Nero being the true star of the show but relegated to a villain who does villainy... but in my opinion poorly. Nero and Nirvana's chemistry sizzled instantly. With his intro and their banter, I was thrilled at all the possibilities. But it was quickly cleared up that Nero was not the MMC, just another piece on the board.
📃 For me, this didn't feel like a Romance genre book. This is a Romantic Drama or Mafia Soap Opera, if you will. The focus is not a romance arc; focus on the main characters. Some have romantic moments, thoughts, and a love interest, but this is not focused on 72 Hours with an Unhinged Menace, where you're forced into an arranged marriage. This is a multi-POV book in various situations. This is a Family Drama in Mafia skin. The focus is spread out among these various people. Some are romantic entanglements, but not the big R for Romance genre. The close proximity and arranged marriage tropes in romance create certain expectations that don't get met here. I was willing to overlook this to a degree in the Surrogate series, but I just can't here.
📃Nero as a morally black MMC to Nirvana's honor would be the much more naturally compelling romance arc. This dynamic popped so much more versus the very staged actions that unfolded through the book. I know this is a fictional world, but I want the world to feel real and breathable instead of a stage performance.
📃Nirvana was an annoying FMC. I couldn't decipher which way a character is meant to be taken, hers especially. Either it's what I'm told explicitly "she's the best" "she's smart" or it's the over dramatic melodramatic action on page "pushing your captor while on a ship/container and running away on a ship to...." to asking dumbass questions, as a top feared lawyer I expect better, to sharing very damning information to people you should probably chill on. So it feels like characters are inconsistent. And Nirvana was a lightning-rod example of this happening a lot.
📃 Crown in this book was the stoic "it's chess, not checkers" style unhinged MMC. I hung in there because I am a sucker for OCD rep and flawed morally gray characters; unfortunately, he just presented as bland. Especially after Nero's pop entrance. We are told in very dramatic stacco fashion that "he is the leader" "he got this in blood" "he's cold" "he's precise" "he has no feelings". And I understand he's meant to be a stoic archetype, but it starts to feel like archetypal language is all the characters speak in-- dialogue becomes rife with these declarations.
📃 Gio, the big boss Don from the Surrogate series, popped up, and I had 5 books + pop-ups in the Warlock series of him over there. I'm tired of this white man getting these important storylines in a book labeled as a Black Romance. His dick is friendly, and I'm over seeing him paired with these Black women when it barely serves the plot. This was somewhat understandable in the Surrogate series since he was the patriarch the demands were based around, but by the end I had my fill and was good. Seeing him constantly pop up in these spin-offs is starting to grate. Especially because, in my opinion, his presence in the top secret reveal was a very unnecessary addition. Last I saw Gio was digging out...falling in love with his best friend (maybe now ex-best friend)'s wife, who happens to be the mother of that man's only child.
📃 Obvious focus isn't on the 72hrs close proximity hook but Zion. Which leads to one thing I struggle with in these books. Characters are vaguely described. We have tepia, I think, skin tone, but loose curls or straight hair, etc. Zion is a prime example of not even understanding him as a 17-year-old child because he's already adultified within the context of the story.
📃The phrasing and syntax were always on level 10 dramatics. It made every conversation exhausting for no reason. And gave the same emotional weight and tone to every sentence and conversation by everyone. Overuse of the "This is not...this is correction" "burns/burned" "heavy" "that landed". We are constantly told what to FEEL, and then inconsistencies in what is spoken versus what happens often pop up on the same page. Thorian is a great example of these inconsistencies. When he first appears, his dialogue and speech patterns come across as both effeminate and not within the same page. Is he the clown jokester, but not because everyone describes him as eagle-eyed? But that doesn't matter because a lot of characters have these explicitly stated dichotomies that we see get ignored on the page. Aire is another character in one breath stating he isn't jelly of his little bro getting the crown to saying his grand betrayal is because his little bro has the crown.

Not gonna lie, I was confused in the beginning with all the stuff about the Black Flame but baby this book ended up being too good!! Lord, not Crown actually developing feelings for someone and actually getting to marry her.
My thoughts while reading:
- [ ] Aire seems to be a total lunatic enraged that his younger brother crown took his spot as head of the family. Only a matter of time before he unravels
- [ ] I get nirvana wanting to protect her younger brother but he made the chose to run with the wrong crowd and now she’s having to pay for it.
- [ ] Lord not crown having ocd
- [ ] Sael seems too composed and headstrong to be dating Oxana, a reporter and pill popper
- [ ] What not Annika keeping her child a secret from her family for the past 17 years and the father doesn’t even know he has a child either. Girl what? And on top of that you run a high end match making service.
- [ ] Lord not jashari the young tyrant having a fling with his lawyer Brittney who just so happens to be Nero’s daughter and a friend of nirvanas. Yall are both entirely too toxic to be trying to mess around.
- [ ] Seems to me crown is intentionally forcing this whole forced proximity thing even if he doesn’t realize it himself. Like why are you making nirvanas move all her things into your room when she has her own room in the house? And forcing the issue of sharing the same bed. You clearly want her foreal.
- [ ] Wowww crown so you can invite some random woman to the house to sleep with to make nirvana jealous and also try to silence your feelings for her but when nirvana flips the script and decided to give a coworker a chance you go and kill him in front of her. Chile what?!?!
- [ ] What ain’t no way jashari went and caught crazy feelings for Brittany just that fast. And now trying to claim her as his and set rules just to leave from sleeping with her and sleep with Vise Grip at his brothers club. I’m so glad Brittany caught him while she was out with nirvana and blew that car up! He deserved way more than that. Reel him in girl. You set the rules, not him.
- [ ] Lord I can’t even imagine what’s gone happen when jashari realizes he’s sleeping with the enemies daughter. But he’s so toxic, I don’t think he would even care. Young and careless chasing after a cougar.

Then going to crowns house to talk to Ace about fleeing and running off for protection before crown kills him. This is gonna break nirvanas pour little heart.
- [ ] Annika who the heck this this old man Giovanni that has connections to your family and got you pregnant?! Girl I need a backstory NOWWWW because your daddy don’t seem that surprised.

I am so excited about this release from an auto read author on my list BRICKHOUSE. This is the first book in the series and I can't wait until book 2 drops!! 🔥🔥🔥This book will make references to previous series created, so I highly highly recommend going back and emerging yourself in the Black/Hollow Flame universe!!! Like all of my reviews, I won’t spoil it for you, but this review is the story of DA Nirvana (FMC) who is a beast in her field. She gets dragged into some drama and is now in the fight of her life with 2 evils that threaten her career and morale compass. This queues our MMC, The Don, Crown. Crown is like no other. He thrives in order, is morally gray, and is determined to never lose control. He is forced into a marriage with Nirvana for preservation and containment. What happens when both FMC and MMC are strong?? Will they destroy each other or become the King and Queen they were arranged to be?
One of my favorite things about Brickhouse is the detail she puts into her character arcs. The way these characters are written makes you feel like you know them personally. The character development is top tier and the plot is always going to twist. You will literally never know what’s coming. This book is multi POV and when I tell you that all of the supporting characters are just as unhinged with secrets hiding in the dark as the main characters!!! You are going to fall in love with the characters and descriptive imagery that is never missed in a BRICKHOUSE book.
You will love this book if you love slow burn like me,arranged marriage, secret babies, plot, strong FMC, and of course this genre.IYKYK! Not too much on my girl if you don’t like a cliffhanger/series. Again, check your trigger warnings. Happy reading!

Crown is moving smoothly, but he’s dropping his guard and allowing a woman to help him feel!!!…Aire finds that to weakening, but does not see his greed or deception as a weakness!!!…
Brit is not going to be safe very long because she is torn btwn her loyalty to her friend and giving her dad what he wants!!!…
Annika is a WHOLE HOT MESS out here in these streets too!!!….I can’t wait to see what Zion does, because he is definitely a force at just 17!!!…He spks with ctrl and respect!!!…

Miss Ma’am
You did not have to do me like to get with this here part one. I was on pins and needles but also cracking up at these characters esp Thorian. I see why he’s the keeper of secrets. Aire worked my nerves this entire book. Sael is a mystery wrapped up in a crazy man I can’t wait to get into him and Percocet Patty’s backstory. Nirvana had been through a lot after the loss she suffered then having to become a parent soon after. Meeting Crown wasn’t a walk in the park bc it started out as a strategy but turned into way more. I honestly love them together. Nirvana being who she is, is definitely an advantage & we find out just why & how. Britt got some explaining to do when things hit the fan with her & boy will. Jashari is crazy as hell however I do understand him. With a father like Lazarus I see why Annika kept her secret. Crown shows his softer side where. Nirvana is involved and his brother’s know he’s in too deep. That cliffhanger was wild as hell even I didn’t see that coming Wanna know exactly what happen through this page turner pick this up and dive in ASAP. Great job Brickhouse

Okay, so I've attempted to read Brickhouse's book in the past and I didn't enjoy it. However, I appreciated her suspenseful style in this tale. I was engaged and wanted to know it ended. I'm not sure if there will be a continuation? Because the arranged marriage sort of happened and Nero is still running loose and her brother still has the files? But will that make for an interesting read. I think she could've wrapped up in this book but then again, she may be skilled at giving us the second part. I liked that there were multiple characters with different POVs. It kept it exciting and entertaining. It wasn't a spicy read and there was a moderate amount of action. I think it was the inner thoughts of the characters that made it interesting. And I liked how she described the characters. You could feel that these were powerful men. It's a shame that the men couldn't remain faithful to their women. But that was realistic for men with that level of power and access. I rated this 5 because I couldn't put the book back and had to see how it ended.

Brickhouse never misses. '72 hours with an Unhinged Menace' was definitely a whirlwind of action and emotions. The introduction of the Mekhari family brought forth a new dynamic, and it was delightful to catch a glimpse of beloved characters. The confrontation between Warlock and Crown was particularly captivating, Crown is on another level! I am eager to witness the unfolding events, especially given Nirvana's impressive strength as a female lead. She will need to be able to stay strong dealing with Crown. The Black Flame Mafia of Dallas has a few snakes in the grass and I just hope and pray that they can get a handle on them before it is too late. I saw the betrayal coming from a mile away so I am sure they will handle it. I can't wait to see how everything will turn out in the next book.

The book started off strong from the very first chapters I was hooked. The energy, pacing, and plot pulled me in immediately. However, around chapter four, I began noticing some similarities to another author I’ve read. I’m not saying anything was copied word for word, but as an active reader, certain elements felt familiar enough that it stood out to me. If I noticed it, I’m sure other readers might as well.
Because of that, I ended up stopping before finishing. That said, I genuinely enjoy your work overall. I’ve read this plot and about five of other books, and I normally look forward to your storytelling. I’m sharing this feedback with respect I think your voice is strong, and I’d love to see it stand confidently on its own without anything that could distract from it.

Great book with a great storyline. Crown Mekhari and Nirvana Crockett are a pair to be nervous about. Nirvana is a lawyer, and Crown is a bad boy. Read and see how the two met; it will surprise you. See who all the characters are and all of the surprises that come with family. Read to see how Crown and Nirvana interact with each other. Will the family accept her and read to see who will betray the family and Crown. Read to see what happens to Nirvana’s brother and if he can make it out of the situation he has put himself in. I give this book five stars. It keeps you on the edge of your seat to see what is going to happen next. I would recommend this book to my friends and people who love to read.

“You’re Mine !”
I enjoyed book one . I picture Ronnie( from Power book 3) as Crown.
A lot of moving pieces in this story. Secrets and betrayal brewing . Crown is a leader I don’t mind reading about . He is strong and in control and always just how I like em. Nirvana is strong too not a push over, not just standing by while life happens. I wonder what will happen when Brittany’s truth is revealed. Nirvana brother is worrying me with his distrust, kinda can’t blame him but hell I trust Crown lol. Aire is piece of work too can’t wait to see how that plays out . Nice story good heat and passion .. on to book two

Walk”em Down House of Mekhari and Nirvana
Mr. Crown “Walk’em down” Mekhari is crazy!!! That man played no games and he asked no questions he was so calculated. Nirvana strategist when her back is against the wall, but she knows her worth and standing on business about her brother. Thorian though stole the show. He knew everything about everyone and his commentary was so funny.! Can’t wait for book 2. It does end with a cliffhanger, but not really a cliffhanger if that makes sense.

Oooooh Brickhouse! This book did not need to end with all these loose ends sitting. My mind cannot rest until I know for sure what is going to happen. There’s so much to unpack here. So many secrets coming to light, so many observations made, but not spoken about. I cannot wait for the next book. I’m really getting into Crown and Nirvana. I wanna see her heal him and vice versa. I want babies. I want the wedding. I want the HEA! Sn: Jashari and Brit are both unhinged and made for each other lol.

BLOOD AND POWER
This was awesome! OCD and all! This was awesome, the wrong person always wants to be in charge, they need to set down. When a parent knows their child they know him. I didn’t know what walk them down meant but I do now! Yes, Honey these men that love don’t play. When J said they go together after looking down I lost it…LOL.. Oh, and when Crown said she can’t ever leave, I think she thought he was playing, she better remember her office! Please check this book out!

This was intense, emotional, calculated, just overall a great read! The Merkhai family is ruthless and will stop at nothing to have control and order. Crown is The Don but Aire is determined to make moves to move him out of the way at any cost because he feels its his birthright. Nirvana has gotten under Crown's skin like no other and Aeson is being used as a pawn. Brittney is in a tough spot, A ruthless father, Jashari chasing after her and tasked to help bring her friend down! So much and there is still so much to come! Great so far!

Too Much Dramatic Flair
This book is not a smooth read. Everything is repetitive. Each chapter is so wordy. It was like the author challenged themselves to see how many times they could say the same thing without really saying anything at all. I just started skipping paragraphs. Then on top of that, the author gives the wrong details. There are so many details on the way they dress, decor and other things but very few of what the characters actually look like. I hate when I’m frustrated while reading. I sure hope it gets better or I’m going to have to abandon ship.

A Don, sibling jealousy, friendship, duty, and a city a bout to burn. Author Brickhouse always brings it in her unhinged stories. I love the factions and her writing of each Hollow house so you don't forget the connections. The last 10 minutes will leave your mouth agape and anticipatory for part II. Now, I see the value of Warlock in this book. Excellent read!!!!

This book was interesting. I am a Brickhouse stan, so one star is missing because the MMC was so extremely close off for me and the story seemed to go off on a tangent a bit. Now, knowing the author I'm sure that the rest of the books will satifymy need for the the mess to be resolved. I look forward to the next book. I'm not gono detail anything in this review, I am waiting for the entire story to unfold. I will say that Aeson needs his butt beat, and being a big sister sucks, I know.

Now this takes us back to griff and gio him thinking he was the pappy and all along griff was the pappy it’s bout to be on and popping but when he told April to run Forrest I fell over lol and cause you big mad you turn on your family for the opps and Britt blowing up that car at the club and then went back in the club to party that lets us know that jashari has met his match I can’t wait to see what happens next

This book had me closing for fear of reading to fast, to opening it, not caring about the consequences. Crown has me feeling like I'm cheating on Warlock (IYKYK)!🤣 Nirvana is an uncomfortable position, do you choose love over blood! Mrs. Author Lady please show Gio some grace! You're going to give that man a heart attack!

Good read, a lot of holes and areas that needed more development for the character or the plot. Also the sex scenes are very cringe, and sound unrealistic or OVERLY Ebonics in spaces that don't make sense. Also confused on the sexuality of main characters brother (A) as he speaks like a female in majority of the book. Would not read again, but it's cool if you want something to pass your time.

Good read, kept me locked in.
Brick house is a great Author. Sometimes it gets a little dark and I have to put the book down and come back, but she always keeps me locked in. This book didn’t disappoint. The dark was balanced. Nirvana wasn’t too masculine, she held her own but she was smart. I’ll be waiting for book 2.

Not what I thought
I was expecting more from the book. The tile makes you assume it is mostly about the 72hours when that was like 10% of the actual book. I understand the different POVs to build the story lines for the next books. I’m curious about the rest of the family as well. A very interesting read.

New great series
Ok I see a family with a jealous head strong son that's going to ruined things to get his way. Needs to be put down in a different way besides the death he wanted for his brother. Wife to be don't care for her too much. Crown I like him . the other people in This book all good but Nero and his daughter are out asp and on with Giovanni. Ready for book 2,3,4,
