Alexander Henry was one of the first 'English' fur traders to adventure into the former French territory after the fall of New France. He began in 1760 to trade with the Indians, was caught up in the fury of Pontiac's war, survived the massacre at Fort Michilimackinac. He traveled as far the Saskatchewan River during his adventures.
4.5 stars. A lively, enthralling story. I would warn parents and young readers, there's a terribly disturbing scene in the book. It's when three European men are taken hostage by natives onto an uninhabited island. I would strongly recommend skipping that part. I wish I didn't have that part in my brain. Other than that, it was a fantastic read for all ages.
Keep in mind this was written in 1961 from a colonial perspective using outdated language and points of view of Indigenous people in Canada. At least it gives an informative overview of who Alexander Henry was as one of the founders of the Northwest Company. His observations give a glimpse of life of the voyageurs, Ojibwa, Ottawa, Cree and Assiniboine peoples. Skips over a lot of his life since it's a children's book.
