We are all just creatures trying to survive the consequences of being misunderstood.
In ‘SICK ANIMALS’ a much-maligned man tells his story with stark honesty and aching poignancy. One night, at precisely one o’clock in the morning, he commits an act so small, so seemingly harmless, that it should have passed unnoticed. Instead, it sparks a devastating chain reaction: the blunt force of the law, the collapse of a marriage, the splintering of a family, and the slow, merciless unravelling of a life.
Moving, darkly humorous, and quietly enraging, this memoir explores the anatomy of modern-day unfairness, the way weakness corrodes truth, how judgement replaces compassion, and how easily one human being can become a scapegoat.
Inspired by the raw and relentless notion of injustice, ‘SICK ANIMALS’ is a haunting meditation on blame, morality, endurance, and the fragile line between innocence and guilt.
A memoir like no other—while reading this extraordinary book, you almost forget it’s about the author’s real life. I truly wasn’t expecting what was written. Paolo—yes, he made a mistake that has been deemed unlawful—but I was genuinely shocked by the way the police behaved from the very beginning. What he went through at their hands alone required an incredible amount of patience; the entire arrest process sounded like a tedious ordeal. Not to mention the lengthy emails and efforts involved in his defence. He was constantly forced to prove himself over and over again—balancing work, family, and the legal system. At times, it felt like his life was spiraling with no clear end in sight. There are deeply personal and difficult moments throughout, but humour does appear here and there—and it’s that humour that helps carry both Paolo and the reader through. It’s not always an easy read, because this is someone’s real life. You can feel his frustration, and it’s clear he needed to put his experiences down on paper. His emotions come through strongly and authentically. Good luck Paolo!!
A memoir of a man's life falling apart after an unwise decision leads to a chain reaction and a downward spiral. At times, this isn't an easy read and makes you wonder what could happen to you if your life took a downward turn. The courtroom scenes were well written and although not a highlight for the author, were the highlight for me.
