From Crimson to White: Finding Gospel Joy at Calvary

Rate this book
Let the truth of the cross lead you to dance!

“Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow.”

When was the last time you felt real gospel joy? Weighed down by guilt, shame and busyness, many of us are just getting through each day. Awareness of our lack of joy only adds to our sense of failure. We fear we’re living under the Father’s scowl. But it doesn’t have to be this way!

Natalie Brand challenges our performance-based theology with the beauty and brilliance of Christ’s work at Calvary. Exposing those things that kill our joy, Natalie drives the liberating truth of the cross into our hopeless. She reminds weary women that, clothed in Jesus’ righteousness and loved by the Father, we can experience tangible and life-changing joy.

Natalie Brand’s From Crimson to White is one of those rare books that is both deeply theological and incredibly readable. It’s rich without being overwhelming—honestly, it felt like sitting down to a nourishing, well-balanced meal rather than something light and fluffy.

What stood out to me immediately was how Brand uses relatable, everyday examples to explain weighty truths. As a fellow book lover, I especially appreciated her references to The Lord of the Rings and Pride and Prejudice—they weren’t just clever, they actually helped ground the theology in a way that made it stick.

The structure of the book flows seamlessly. Each chapter builds naturally into the next, moving from one doctrinal truth to another without feeling disjointed. The chapters are short, the writing is clear, and yet nothing feels watered down. It’s concise but never shallow.

I found myself highlighting something on almost every page. There’s a depth here that invites you to slow down, reflect, and even reread sections just to fully take it in.

In a space where many books can feel overly simplified, this one doesn’t shy away from substance. It’s thoughtful, grounded in truth, and written with clarity and purpose.

This is the kind of book that not only teaches but lingers with you.

“Some of us are so used to hearing the gospel, it’s as though we’ve become inoculated to it. Or worse, we operate under the assumption that it was really God’s obligation to save. If we’re honest, we might even say we’re entitled to salvation.”

“Many of us need to grow in our gospel revelry. To glory daily in Christ and his Calvary-victory; every pore of our person praising the Lord for his astounding grace.”

Is there a felicity in the world that compares to reading another fantastic book from a favorite author? I’m rounding out my Spring Break reading fest with another five star recommendation for you.

Natalie Brand calls us to revel in the beautiful joy we have in Christ. Every day the gift of the gospel compels us to dance with abandon and give thanks to God for His everlasting love, grace, and mercy. With the warmth of a sister in Christ, Natalie Brand encourages and spurs us on to walk in the joy of our salvation. Her writing is inviting and engaging, with fantastic references to Jane Austen and Tolkien, which are certainly my cup of tea. I think the book would be phenomenal for a small group study, as it includes reflection questions and Scripture at the back corresponding to each chapter. This is a must read!

Thank you to the publisher for a complimentary copy of this wonderful book! All opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.

This book was a joy to read! It is chocka block with beautiful reminders of what Jesus has done for us and how we can live because of that. I also love it when an author uses Lord of the Rings analogies like Natalie has here 😍

What a joy it was to read From Crimson to White! When I first received the book, I thought it was perfectly timed for the final week of Lent, but this book is so much more than a seasonal read. The deeper I got into it, the more I felt the weight of what Jesus truly did for humanity, and how His sacrifice transforms everything.

The author’s writing style is both warm and deeply rooted in Scripture. Natalie Brand has an incredible ability to weave truth and grace together in a way that’s both comforting and deeply convicting. She brings us face-to-face with the gospel in a way that doesn't just inform the mind but also touches the heart. The explanation of justification is so clear that I almost couldn’t help but rejoice in the truths she shared as I read. It was like reading the gospel afresh and realising just how complete Jesus’ work on the cross truly was.

By the end of the book, you’ll know without a doubt who you are in Christ. Brand’s writing makes it crystal clear that there’s nothing we can add to what Jesus has already accomplished. This truth is liberating and life-changing.

This isn’t a book you should just read during Easter. It’s one that every Christian should return to year after year. It’s an evergreen reminder of the joy of salvation and the depth of Christ's sacrifice for us. Every time I read it, I feel more rooted in the gospel and more in awe of what Jesus has done.

Another wonderful aspect of From Crimson to White is how relatable it is. The examples Natalie uses are down-to-earth and easy to connect with, making complex theological concepts accessible to all. You don’t need to be a scholar to understand and appreciate the rich, biblical truths in this book.

I wholeheartedly recommend From Crimson to White to every Christian. Whether you're just starting your faith journey or have been walking with Christ for years, this book will bring you closer to Him and deepen your understanding of the grace and freedom we have in Christ.

A huge thank you to 10ofthose UK for sending me the book to review. It was such a blessing to read, and I’m grateful for the opportunity!

This was such a great book to read around Easter, but honestly it’s needed all year long. Natalie begins the book by asking what our worship is like when everything is stripped away? She talks about how our shame over our sin holds us back from true gospel joy and reverie. One of my favorite parts of the book is when she discusses God clothing Adam and Eve in the garden. How the covering wasn’t just about clothing - it was the birth of death. Something alive had to die to cover their shame. Foreshadowing Christ. Then Christ comes and He covers us forever, not just temporarily. His resurrection is the death of death.

The sentence in the conclusion that I think sums up the book is: “We never outgrow the Cross.” Let it be so.

Some favorite quotes:
“We rarely grieve over our sin, unmoved by the white-hot purity of God, we fail to see just how ugly we can be. In truth, we don’t actually believe that our rebellion is bad enough to put us in hell or Jesus on the Cross. Instead of comparing ourselves to God, other people become our gauge.”

“When we replay our sins back in our minds, aren’t we asking for them back? But they aren’t there and they aren’t ours. They’re nailed to the Cross. If we want to look at them, we’ll have to go there.”

In From Crimson to White, Natalie Brand helps you find gospel joy at Calvary. If you feel weighed down in this world, this book will lift you up.

This book walks you through the gospel with passion, excitement, and vigor. It helped me remember what it actually means to be saved, and it splashed ice-cold water on my tired, dry eyes, awakening me to see the glory that comes from the cross of Christ.

Rejoice in the Gospel

While written to and for women, even as a man I found Brand’s writing captivating and compelling. I was especially moved by the reminder that our God is quick to clothe. Despite our sin, He dignifies us—He covers and cherishes us.

Although refreshing, it is also challenging. Brand asks what excuses we make to justify our sin; she calls us to maturity while reminding us that there is no more condemnation—so go and sin no more. This book will reinvigorate your faith and leave you rejoicing in the gospel.

It is such a joy to read theology written by women for women. It's able to touch my lived experience in a way that sometimes other books just can't. This book starts with the statement that "more Christians need to dance in their kitchen over their salvation." While I'm not normally the break out into dancing type, I'll admit I tried it out after finishing this book! Natalie does a lovely job marrying deep and rich theology with really accessible and practical examples and stories that bring the truth of the gospel alive to lived experience. While you may not dance in your kitchen (though I recommend it!), this book will surely help you value the beauty of Christ's work on our behalf in deeper ways. It also includes helpful discussion questions and memory verses for each chapter in the back, making it an excellent resource for a group study!
