Gothic Science Fiction explores the fascinating world of gothic influenced science fiction. From Frankenstein to Doctor Who and from H. G Wells to Stephen King, the book charts the rise of a genre and follows the descent into darkness that consumes it.
I was super excited to read this. And then I started reading it.
For an academic text, it's a little...loose. It's not badly written, but it's not the smoothest text ever. This is the last sentence:
" 'Strange that the genres should cross at all?' Maybe not. Perhaps what would be stranger is if they had never crossed at all."
Not a great sentence. The whole structure and writing was a bit disjointed, too. The topics were interesting, but by the end, I wasn't super convinced about there being a gothic science fiction genre. It just seemed to be a basic analysis of random Gothic and sci-fi books and some movies, nothing too in-depth that you couldn't already grasp intuitively. There are other books in this series, maybe they're a bit better.
