Will his second chance sink like the sand beneath his feet?
Bitter and broken from his imprisonment in the Citadel, Hatch can’t stand to watch the woman he loves start her new life. When the king offers him a position as the governor of Evania, an island territory populated by Alphanites, Hatch sees the job as a chance to escape his heartache. But from the moment his crutches hit the sand of this tropical island, Hatch is deemed an outsider, particularly by Myah, an artsy adrenaline junkie the locals have nicknamed “Princess.”
Myah is content to spend her days writing letters to her far-off fiancé. The last thing she needs is a government official taking over Evania and poking at old wounds. But when an enemy attack causes the island to start sinking into the sea, Myah must convince the sullen governor that her home is worth saving.
With only fifty-two days to stabilize the island, Hatch and Myah must confront the pasts they both long to leave behind. As the ground literally sinks beneath them, will they drown in their regrets or ride the waves of change to a future neither could’ve imagined?
This story has shades of a retelling of Nehemiah, but the heart of the story is really the relationship between Hatch and Myah. And it's a great romance. There's a lot to appreciate about how Schaulis paints their character arcs as they deal with the baggage from their pasts. And I was impressed by how well Schaulis used God's voice throughout the narrative to drive the story forward without feeling like a deus ex machina.
Haven't read the original series this was a spinoff to, but reading this makes me want to move to that series next!
I love getting to read Hatch’s story following the first 2 books in the Susa Chronicles. Megan does a fabulous job of weaving faith into her stories. Her characters have real questions and doubts that we struggle with and bring them before Alpha. I love when there’s dialogue between Him and the characters. I loved the built on the Rock analogy Myah visualizes, and this part of conversation Hatch has with Alpha: Ch. 34 - “I can’t do this anymore.” Good. What? My mind reacts before my mouth can shape the question. You want me burned out, clinging to the end of my rope? I want you to stop carrying what was never yours to bear.” -
I was given a complimentary e-copy in exchange for an honest review after reading this book. All thoughts are my own.
Megan Schaulis never ceases to amaze me with her writing that brings together thrilling (and life-threatening) adventure, sweet romance, AND powerful faith content. No worries about low stakes here! I'm so glad hatch got his own story after what happened in Proclaimer, and Myah was easy to love. I want Rafferty to be my uncle, and Zerub, Yara, and Ezri cracked me up--you can't go wrong with a gaggle of flirtatious old ladies. This book wasn't without its serious moments, though--and I stayed up WAY too late to finish the last quarter.
Both Hatch and Myah are struggling to find footing after tragedy, and both have responded in their own way. Hatch by carrying heavy burdens and living in grief and bitterness, and Myah by shoving it all away and pretending she's fine. They are so incredibly raw and flawed, and I didn't always like their choices... but watching them reconcile and come to God was so beautiful. Chapter 34 made we want to burst with tears at the power and beauty behind it. Our identities HAVE to be in Christ--He has to be our foundation, or it all will crumble.
The science elements of this series are amazing--the nanotech, Rafferty's inventions... even the glassblowing parts felt so technical. Schaulis clearly does her research, and even though half of the tech is made up (I think?), it feels so plausible! Her writing is vivid and easy to visualize. Can I please get a one-way ticket to Evania?
The midpoint and climax will ruin you, but no cliffhanger here--blessedly. And I order that Lennox get a book next! This was as a fantastic read, as I knew it would be, and you need to read it!
Also, I loved picking up on the Nehemiah connections sprinkled throughout! (I may have skimmed through the book of Nehemiah before I started reading so I'd be ready to spot them!)
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the publisher. All views expressed are my honest (and enthusiastic!) opinion.
Rebuilder is another awesome book in the Susa Chronicles series by Megan Schaulis. I was so excited when I learned this book was going to be released, because I thought the Susa Chronicles had ended and I had wanted to continue in this world so bad. This sequel focuses on Hatch, the heartbroken (plus body and spirit broken) friend of Novalise from the original duology. If you haven't read Protector and Proclaimer you'll want to make sure to do that, but know that there will be some spoilers to those books in my review.
You've been warned.
Hatch was in love with Novalise, the woman who was also an Alphanite spy in the palace in Susa. However, he never had a chance to tell her, and she fell in love with King Zadien and became queen. In this sequel, Hatch is barely holding himself together. He is honored with the position of governor of the island of Evania which he gladly accepts so he can distance himself from Novalise and Zadien.
However, when he arrives, he discovers that the island is in danger of sinking and there is an enemy that is threatening them.
Myah is the former governor's daughter and is not at all pleased that a mainlander, one who comes from the king of Susa, has come to take on the role of governor.
There is a lot that needs to be figured out to save this island paradise, and Hatch and Myah need to learn to work together, but more importantly they need to learn to trust in God, or Alpha as He is called in this series.
I loved this island setting and being able to get a small update of the lives of Novalise and Zadien. However, this book focuses on Hatch and Myah and the people on the island. I loved seeing even more of the future-y tech that is present in this future, dystopian version of our world.
Faith is such an important part of this series. From the original duology where the characters had to hide their true allegiance while still relying on God, to this book where they are free to live out their lives as Alphanites. Here we see characters needing God's help to work through their pain and learn to trust him with their whole heart, abiding in him, relying on Him, even beyond their own understanding. I loved seeing their faith grow as they humbled themselves. Learning to go forward in faith a step at a time. Especially because what I was reading went along so well with the two Bible studies I am reading. Sure seemed like God's timing for me to be reading this book.
I highly recommend this book. Just make sure to read Protector and Proclaimer first.
I received an e-copy of this book as a member of the review team and was not required to write a favorable review. These are my own honest thoughts.
If you've ever wanted to read a retelling of the Biblical Nehemiah account set in a world of nanotechnology, this book is for you! Even if you've never asked for such a novel, if you like dystopian stories with strong moral characters, consider giving this one a try.
This book is a standalone, but our hero is Hatch, whom readers may remember from the award-winning Susa Chronicles by the same author, which retells the story of Esther in this same nanotech world.
Hatch arrives as governor on the isle of Evania - a land he's never been. While still getting used to the beachy scene, they come under attack from an enemy nation, and unless they can find a way to stabilize things, the island will sink into the sea in fifty-two days.
Joining Hatch in trying to save Evania is an eccentric assistant named Rafferty, a newly in love friend named Calder, and an artsy adrenaline junkie named Myah.
While reading about all the cool technology was fun, what I especially liked about this novel was the theme of healing. At the opening of the book, Hatch is in need of both physical and emotional healing. Myah goes on her own healing journey as well. Both characters start the story guarded and frustrated, but by the end both have found peace and their purpose in life.
Highly recommended for those who love Biblical retellings or dystopian stories.
I received my copy from the publisher. All thoughts in this review are my own.
Rebuilder by Megan Schaulis was a great read ! I had read the first two books in this series (The Susa Chronicles – Protector and Proclaimer) before and this third book was a great addition to the series. I really enjoyed the story even thought it is a bit different from the two previous books (they go together) and it is still what happens next, but from the point of view of a beloved character that was introduced in the first books : Hatch. I loved Hatch even in the first books and I am so glad he got to have his own story :) The setting is on an island and I couldn’t have asked for a better place. Now I want to move there :) The characters were well developped and it was hard for me to put the book down ! Hopefully there will be another book in this series that focuses on another character (Lennox perhaps ?) -- I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publishers. I was not required to provide a positive review. All opinions expressed are mine alone. --
4.5 stars! Loved this bookend to the series and the rollercoaster that it took me on as a reader. Hatch finally got his story and I am not complaining about spending more time in this fascinating world 😆
Megan Schaulis gets the hat trick--five stars on all three of the Susa Chronicles books! I'd like to pick a favorite, but I'm unsure if I could. And while I admit some skepticism about Rebuilder--after all, I wouldn't get to see Novalise or Zadien in this one--I ended up loving it so much!
I'm going to break with tradition a little in this review and talk about the spiritual threads first. Hatch and Myah's relationship to and with Alpha is spot-on, not only for this book, but what I think believers and seekers alike search for in their relationships with and to God. The fact that the characters and Alpha have real conversations, with all the nuances those entail while remaining faithful to Scripture and God's character, impressed me. I also often found myself closing my Kindle to pray or meditate, given the reminder of how personal God is and what He wants me personally to know. Rebuilder truly feels like a love letter to the believer, even and especially if she or he is questioning God's plans or motives.
Perhaps that's because in Rebuilder, Hatch and Myah both go through that questioning. However, they're never "stuck" in it. They aren't bitter victims. Instead, they balance raw, human emotions with the truths they've committed to follow and the callings they're pursuing. Myah in particular stuck out for me because on the surface, she is borderline delusional. On the surface, she can't process grief, and that *should* have made her ineffectual as a leader and a person. But she's also tenacious, compassionate, and growing in wisdom--*while* dealing with weaknesses and pain. It's a delicate balance, and Megan pulled it off.
So too, she pulled it off with Hatch. Again, this guy has every reason to think all good things have been stolen from him, forever. He has every reason to wallow in anger. And in fact, sometimes I worried for him because I knew his calm, unflappable mask was exactly that. But as with Myah, none of this negates Hatch's protectiveness and ingenuity. None of it negates his appreciation and growing love of Evania or Myah. He often says he's not the guy Myah, her uncle, or others need, compared to guys like Lennox or Declan. But throughout the story, he proves he is exactly right for the place he's in and the people who need him.
I don't talk about settings that often, but I have to say: Evania blew me away. What I loved was how Megan didn't go out of her way to make it too fantastical or exotic, even though her series is speculative and somewhat fantasy or sci-fi. Instead, Evanians call a coconut a coconut. They wear regular clothes, not tech-enhanced fish scales (if you read it, you'll get it). They unite cutting edge technology with the way they live in the everyday. They take care of their own. I'm not a summer girl; I don't even like the beach much (I burn like a lobster). But Evania had me wanting to grab a SolBlock and jump into this world.
Finally, this kind of goes back to the spiritual threads, but is kind of its own thing: I give Megan *all the kudos* for centering her story around another Biblical person and book as she did with Novalise and Esther. I won't say which one if you haven't read either this story or the Biblical one. But, if you dip into the Old Testament, you'll find a true story quite similar to the one in Rebuilder, and you just might recognize Hatch as a version of a Biblical hero. Brava!
As with any great series, I hate to see The Susa Chronicles end, if indeed this is an ending. But as I also say a lot, if a series has to end, this was the way to do it. I can't wait to see what Megan writes next. In the meantime, if you haven't traveled to her Susa yet, please do. You're in for three treats!
Rebuilder was an absolute page turner from beginning to end. Megan Schaulis took Hatch—a secondary yet important character from the previous books—and turned him into such a lovable, heroic, and deeply human main character despite all his flaws and limitations.
Still emotionally shattered after imprisonment and heartbreak, Hatch accepts a position as governor of the island territory of Evania, hoping for a fresh start far away from painful memories. Instead, he finds an island in crisis, a hostile population that sees him as an outsider, and Myah, a woman carrying wounds just as deep as his own.
What I loved most about this story is that Hatch is far from perfect. His physical injuries don’t define him, but the emotional scars absolutely do. Being rejected by the woman he loved in favor of none other than the King of Susa devastated his self-worth, and his struggles with jealousy, insecurity, and feeling unlovable felt incredibly real. Watching him wrestle with whether Alpha truly has good plans for him—or whether suffering is all that awaits him—gave the story so much emotional depth.
Myah’s story was equally compelling. The heartbreak of being left behind by the man she loved is only the surface of much deeper pain, and uncovering her scars throughout the story made the book impossible to put down.
The plot itself was so creative and exciting. I loved the nanotech elements, the holos, the danger surrounding the sinking island, and the constant sense of urgency. Even though the villain isn’t always front and center, the threat feels deadly throughout the entire story. The pacing was fast, adventurous, and incredibly engaging.
I also adored the side characters—Calder, Rafferty, and especially Lenox. I am officially invested in Lenox getting his happily ever after too! He’s one of my favorites of the Alphanite group!
But my favorite part of the book was the relationship Hatch and Myah each had with Alpha. Those moments were beautiful. Alpha’s loving guidance, encouragement, and even occasional banter brought so much heart to the story. The themes of faith, trust, healing, and learning to rely on Alpha beyond what can physically be seen were woven so naturally into the plot. I especially loved the reminder that Alpha loves us exactly as we are—broken, weak, scarred—and that He alone can truly heal and carry our burdens.
And if you like Biblical retellings, you’ll find out that this is a Nehemiah’s Retelling. I had never read one, and there’s so much to learn from his journey!
Loved this quote from Alpha: “You are my son whom I love, and I long to see you live in the fullness I offer”. The reality that our identity relies on being God’s children and not what the outside world see or judge is so fulfilling!
This book had adventure, emotional depth, faith, romance, and hope all wrapped together beautifully. Highly recommended!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Barbour Publishing and was under no obligation to post a review.
Megan Schaulis’ Susa Chronicles is a refreshing and exceptional series that has become one of my favorites. Protector and Proclaimer were excellently written retellings of the Biblical account of Esther put in a very modern and dystopian spin that I enjoyed. Rebuilder the newest addition brought a slightly different perspective in the overall storyline that added new insights to the world Ms. Schaulis so excellently crafted. If you are looking for a unique, adventuresome, and wholesome book that is almost impossible to put down, I highly recommend Rebuilder.
I was thrilled when Ms. Schaulis announced that Hatch would have his own story in this third installment of the Susa Chronicles. I love the way that Ms. Schaulis brings together the unique and new setting with such great and intriguing plotlines and characters. The characters of Rebuilder really stuck out to me. Hatch and Myah have different struggles and obstacles to overcome, yet their characters both have dealt with much pain and suffering in their past that makes them feel broken yet surviving. I enjoyed watching the growth of Hatch as he lands on the island of Evania and is thrown into the role of governor for an island that has been independently running themselves for many years. Myah isn’t a fan of Hatch after a rough start. As the island is thrown into chaos and survival mode, Myah and Hatch learn that survival may mean putting aside their differences to fight together for their home. I loved the way Ms. Schaulis brought the bitterness, grief, and pain from the characters’ past to build them up and draw them closer to God.
Rebuilder brings readers to Evania, an island with a unique history and rich culture that is home to many Alphanites. The setting is very tropical and sounds like a nice peaceful vacation spot. Well, it would be until an enemy attacks them and the island’s foundations start to crumble. This is just the start of the challenges faced by those on Evania. Can they prevent their beloved island from being completely abandoned or falling into the ocean? Will the people be able to defend their island as a united force and survive the unknown? Pick up Rebuilder to discover for yourself. You will not be disappointed. If you haven’t heard of Rebuilder or the rest of this adventure-packed series, now is the time to open up a book in this series and enjoy the grand adventures within. Happy readings!

Rebuilder- Book 3 of the Susa Chronicles By Megan Schaulis ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Hatch has survived betrayal. He has survived living in secret. He has survived watching the woman he loved marry someone else. Now, he has been sent to be the governor of an island nation that has all kinds of problems he doesn’t feel he’s equipped to handle including a neighboring kingdom set on destroying them, and a queen who who won’t except her throne. Myah should be Queen of Evania, but since her dad and her fiancé both died trying to save the island all she can do is grieve and take crazy risks. She is not happy when realizes Susa has sent a governor. She thinks he is just there to steal more from the nation than they already have. When the neighboring country starts to attack the island, everyone realizes they must work together to save it, and in the process they find more.
I thoroughly enjoyed this futuristic retelling/reimagining of the story of Nehemiah. The way Megan’s mind works to create such a reimagining is just amazing. As I was reading this story of Nehemiah I was also seeing what felt like threads of Gideon’s story. The characters were interesting, but I really wanted to shake Myah, and Hatch wasn’t perfect either. Better communication would go along way with them and with Rafferty. The beginning of this story started off a bit slow but when it picked up it picked up fast! There were also a lot of side characters to remember. However, it was so imaginative and inventive. Besides the hostile neighbors, Evania is a place I would love to visit even with all the sand. Oh-and I hope we will get the story for Lennox that might be hinted at towards the end of this book.
If you love Biblical allegories or Bible stories retold in an imaginative way you will love this one. If futuristic tales set in dystopian type worlds are not your thing you might want to skip this one.
It was so great to get to hear Hatch's story before the Susa Chronicles finished. Heartbroken and adrift, Hatch needs a place to regain his footing. Myah needs to know how much Alpha cares for her and wants to get their relationship strong again. They both face issues and decisions that show the depth of their characters. Strengths and flaws come through so strongly, the reader has no hope but to learn along with them. It feels like new friends that you want to either hug and cheer or warn and groan, depending on what they do in each new situation they find themselves in. The action is high throughout the story, always leaving the reader wondering where the next danger will come from. I loved the new island location this book is set in. And the technology introduced by this new island people is so amazing. Megan Schaulis obviously did her research to make it so technical and to bring it all to life. I feel like I should be able to book a trip to see all the wonderful things! The faith relationships with Alpha are so well written. It was so neat how the characters could hear Alpha's voice and communicate with him. I was so happy with how the second book in this series finished I wasn't sure how I would feel about this new installation. It far exceeded my hopes and expectations. I am so happy I didn't miss out on Hatch's story! Megan Schaulis has such an amazing talent to transport her readers to new lands. the pages fly by as you eagerly read to find all the answers and information the characters reveal. Definitely grab a copy of this and the rest of the Susa Chronicles. I'm looking forward to the next adventure! I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Once again, a brilliant story by the incredible Megan Schaulis.
In Rebuilder, she weaves a powerful tale of love born from heartbreak, the struggle with self-worth, the weight of holding on to the past, and the incredible freedom that comes with surrender.
The story is just as compelling as the themes it explores. Bitter and broken after his imprisonment, Hatch escapes to the island of Evania, hoping distance will dull his pain. Instead, he’s met with resistance—especially from Myah, an artsy, adrenaline-loving “Princess” who has no patience for an outsider disrupting her home. But when an enemy attack sets the island literally sinking into the sea, everything changes. With only fifty-two days to save Evania, Hatch and Myah are forced to confront their pasts, their pain, and the possibility of a future neither expected.
Come and be immersed in the island paradise of Evania. Join Hatch and Myah in the race to save their home. Meet the quirky Rafferty and be amused by Yara, Ezri, and Zerub. And most importantly, learn from the wisdom of Alpha.
Technically, Rebuilder can be read on its own, but I highly recommend reading Protector and Proclaimer first—you won’t be disappointed.
I highly recommend this book, and I can’t wait for the next one.
I was given a complimentary copy of this book, but the views and opinions are completely my own.
In this fantastically powerful story, readers are given the chance to read Hatch's story. Hatch has endured unspeakable challenges both physically and mentally at the hands of the former Susa government. Now he is given a chance to start over as governor in an island province called Evania. He was not prepared for what he would face, an island on the brink of imminent destruction, nor for Myah, a grieving resident of Evania. Hatch and Myah both go on a journey of rediscovering who they are in the eyes of Alpha.
I was blown away by the complexity of characters presented in the story. Megan did an outstanding job with gripping the emotions of the reader in this story of hope, faith, resiliency, and love. The descriptions of the landscape and scenery of the Evania transported me to a place that is vibrant and full of life. The characters of Hatch and Myah offers readers a chance to see the many facets of grief and the journey to overcoming it. Just when you think the Susa Chronicles couldn't get any better - Rebuilder showed me to never underestimate the genius writing of Megan Schaulis.
**I was given a complimentary copy of the story for reviewing purposes only. Any opinions expressed in this review are my own.
I absolutely love the dystopian aspects of this book, and the fictional historical details are spot on and fascinating! This world feels so real, with Evania being somewhere you wish you could visit. There are just are not enough books like this, with a well developed dystopian world, romance, heart, and faith. Hatch just steals your heart, and he and Maya are perfect for each other. The characters are all so well written that they seem real. It’s a beautiful story to read, wondering how Hatch and Maya will get their happily ever after, through all of the tragedy they both have overcome and the obstacles they face in this story, but rooting for them each step of the way. Hatch is such a complex character, and one of the best leading men in recent memory for me. I love how steady and dependable he is, and is able to overcome so much, especially being around Maya’s joyful spirit, which she keeps, despite her circumstances. There aren’t enough words to describe how this book takes you on a roller coaster ride, with faith woven through so seamlessly. Alpha just leaps off the page! I feel like I inhale every book by Megan Schaulis! She is a must buy for me, and I hope she continues to write more in this series!
This was a satisfying wrap-up to the Susa Chronicles. The tropical setting and hope vibes kept this from becoming your typical depressing dystopian read. And if you read the first 2 books in the series and are on Team Hatch (like me), you definitely want to read this one! Hatch finally got his HEA, and I got to turn the last page with a smile on my face.
Content review: This one is clean with no profanity, sex, or graphic violence. Contains brief kissing. Christian themes are naturally integrated and not in-your-face (for those of you who don't like preachy religious fiction). The characters are older than teenage, so while the other books in the series were obviously YA, this one could cross into adult fiction, and honestly, it could go either way. The content is appropriate for teens, but the writing is intriguing enough to appeal to adults.
With the conclusion of the series, I'd say Megan Schaulis has become a must-read author for me!
I received a complimentary ARC from the publisher. The rating and opinions expressed in this review are my own.
This is the third book in Shaulis’ Susa Chronicles, a companion novel to Protector and Proclaimer. Characters from the first two books are mentioned in this one, and a few of them are “present” in the action. There are plenty of new characters to fall in love with! The location is new, and different – a group of islands that supposedly belong to Susa, but most people there think are a myth.
I enjoyed reading about Hatch’s new life in Evania after Novalise marries King Zadien. He has a lot of learning and growing to do as Governor of Evania, and the people there get to learn and grow as well. See if you can figure out how this book is related to the book of Nehemiah in the Bible!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions expressed are mine alone.
Rebuilder is a delightful tale that took me on quite the adventure. I did not want to put this book down. I was on the edge on my seat so to speak wondering how they would get out of the predicament they found themselves in. Wow! How creative and imaginative the author was. I loved it!!!! I especially enjoyed how the characters interacted with Alpha (God) and he spoke back to them. They included him in their days and were very honest with how they were feeling and the struggles they had. The truth shared in the story was encouraging and inspiring. I love that I have this book on my shelf to share with others. Amazing CF!
I have a confession. From the start, I knew Novalise and Zadien would end up together. But Hatch still had my heart, and though I knew Zadien was the right choice…I wanted it to be Hatch. But after reading Rebuilder, I’m okay with Hatch not being chosen then. And Megan? I’ll be waiting for more on those thoughts about Lennox - and then hopefully Berg. :)
Goodness. Every book should be like this, a delight to travel through, full of truth that makes you realize things about yourself, and leaving you wanting more at the end, yet still satisfied. Schaulis is a master storyteller, and her books just keep getting better.
Hatch and Myah. It’s hard to put into words how unique these two characters are, how refreshing and relatable and…just how perfectly imperfect. Hatch’s steadiness, his care for others, his determination to do the best he can no matter what, made him an instant favorite and a hero who stands out from the crowd. I loved how he did what was right, how he boldly told the truth and did what was right, no matter how uncomfortable it made him.
And Myah. I relate so much to running away to something that makes you forget the fear, the pain, the overwhelmingness of the hard parts of life. Schaulis handled her grief in such a realistic way, capturing both the burning need to run as well as the inability to change and face what we’re running from on our own.
Just like in Protector and Proclaimer, Schaulis brings God and faith into the story in an incredible way, serving to deepen my relationship with Him while enjoying frolicking along the sandy beaches of Evania. I cannot wait to read more of Schaulis’s works, and sincerely hope Lennox and Berg get their own stories!
I received an ARC. All opinions expressed are my own.
From the first page of this now-trilogy (duology with a sequel?), I've been utterly hooked, so was absolutely stoked when I heard there was a third book coming. Though I tried to keep my expectations somewhat near reality, they were still pretty high. And this book lived up to, and totally exceeded, every one of them.
I'm not sure whether it was the themes or the fact that it was a little less 'superhero' and a bit more 'guy who's been given a rough go of it and is now trying to figure out how to reconcile the life he now has', but this one really grabbed me and stuck with me long after finishing.
As I've come to know with Megan Schaulis's books, it is filled with adventure, romance, science-y things, fun, depth, beautifully broken characters, faith, and unforgettable moments. Fangirling? Probably :) But for good reason. Sometimes a book/series comes along that just hits you in a deep way, and The Susa Chronicles for me has been one of those. So good.
Many thanks to the publisher for an early copy of the book to read. All thoughts, fangirling, and reviews are definitely my own.
