Well I finished it, the general storyline was good, as I mention below there’s several times I was just taken out of story due to one thing or another. So much so that I started writing this review because it was irritating me. The conflict I think should have played out differently. Just my opinion but the ghosting of the kid? When you’re literally her teacher and see her every damn day? It makes the fmc seem insincere, flaky and just deeply unlikeable with the way she treated the mmc’s child. Like this woman was introduced as deeply emphatic to her students and very caring/loving. To get as deep with the kid as she did to then just go “alright well I need some space byyyeeee” yeah that’s just, an interesting choice that doesn’t really suit her character but my thoughts as I read along are below. I feel like the MMC deserved better but this was his choice, he seems happy with it I guess. I really just finished the book for the MMC and the kid. They were doing their absolute best and like despite what was played as his shortcomings/failures as a parent, his own trauma from his childhood and losing his sister in a traumatic way, he really did his best and gave his all for that girl. Like he put aside his own fears etc to raise her and care for her when he had never known a family unit. Mvps of the book mmc and his niece.

*I’m at 60% and there’s been a few points where there’s a plot hole or just something confusing happening. Like the first two chapters are the same scene from both MCs pov, his ends with him promising he’s gonna go back the next day, finally interact with her and then we jump like a week or something to they’ve planned a birthday party for his niece and somehow she has his phone number and we’ve seen none of this relationship building, it isn’t even evident how long has passed since the initial scene until a little further along? There’s a few times where time jumps and it kind of takes you out of the story. Also the point where I’m at, they put the kid to bed in her bed, then he drives the FMC home, which had me thinking eh why would he leave his young child asleep at home alone? but the kid is asleep in the truck somehow?
Anyway I will persevere.

*This moment happened, confusing me and taking me out of the story again-

‘Moments later, my phone rang, shattering the silence. I grabbed it without thinking. "What the hell, Emma?" Maggie. Of course. "Hi, Maggie.”’

Which would just be nothing, only we had not heard of or met a character named Maggie at all up to this point. I literally searched the book for a Maggie, Mag, Mags… Like what do you mean “ofcourse it’s Maggie”… lady who is Maggie ?!

*he’s acting taken aback that fmc “admitted” she loves him, and she’s acting like she’s made a blunder… THEY ADMITTED THEIR LOVE FOR ONE ANOTHER LIKE 4 CHAPTERS AGO

*they did eventually briefly introduce Maggie just, not anywhere near her first mention, and not in the fmc pov… imagine meeting someone, interacting with them only for 3 days later someone says like “oh yeah this is Fred, he’s my brother” 🙄

*honestly the way the fmc is acting is low key disgusting me. The whole shut down and push away thing when it’s towards a romantic partner? For the particular reason she’s doing it? You do you I guess, but to involve a small child in that? Who had bonded so far as to believe you part of their family? I am actually disgusted, like feel sick about how she’s treating his kid. Like I don’t think she’s cut out to be a parent. I’m questioning if this author is even a real person and not just an Ai because ????? What person with any sort of humanity would write chapters and chapters of the way this woman is willfully fucking up this 6 year old

*and imo the fmc trauma doesn’t even make sense, her sister died on a mountain trail, she is scared of the wilderness and the mountains so she *checks notes* deliberately immediately moves to a small mountain town with large swaths of wilderness … ok

*jesus fucking Christ
90% ‘“…I didn't fall in love with a perfect person. I fell in love with you. Messy. Scared. Determined to outrun your own shadow. I knew what I was signing up for." "You fell in love with me?" "Obviously." He said it like it was the most self-evident thing in the world.’

WHY ARE YOU SO SHOCKED Literally like -

72% ‘“You climbed that trail for Sarah. You faced your worst fear—" "And look where it got me." She laughed, a broken sound. "Panic attacks and a sprained ankle and falling in love with someone I'm going to lose." "Say that again," I said softly. "What?" "The last part." She stared at me, realizing what she'd admitted. Fresh tears spilled over. "It doesn't matter."’

And

71% ‘"My sister walked into the mountains on a beautiful day and never walked out. My mother fought for two years and lost anyway. Everyone I love leaves. Everyone." "I'm not leaving." "You can't promise that."’

And

72% ‘I can't do this. I can't love you and wait for the mountain to take you. I'm not strong enough."’

And

62% ‘"She loves you," he murmured into my hair. "I love her too." The words came easily, naturally. "Both of you." His arms tightened. "Yeah?" "Yeah." "Good." I felt him smile against my temple. "Because I'm in love with you, Emma Reed. Completely. Inconveniently. Probably since that craft disaster."’

Every time they say they love each other it’s a shock, like the author wrote it in and just forgot several times over?

*also she had called her dad leaving him a voicemail while crying and he just … didn’t call her back? Then she mentioned like twice afterwards that she needed to be better towards her dad and call him and I’m like ???? Man if I left my dad a voicemail crashing out and he just didn’t call me back I’d be feeling some kind of way but 100% not a failure of a daughter, like what the hell

Compelling Emotionally

I’ve been a lot of spicy books with very detailed scenes so I was kinda disappointed not to get a spicy scene in this series to go with these emotionally developed handsome men. But this series makes me cry and makes me feel for Lawson’s characters. I won’t make the mistake of judging a romance novel that doesn’t have spice before I give it a try again. Truly love this series!!!

Sweet and clean. The most scandalous thing is a kiss in this story and it’s pretty short lived. So if you want clean romance, you found it. If you’re looking for angst and heat, not the right book.

With that being said, the story is cute and I found it to be a good rom-com. The conversations between Sarah, Emma and Cole had me laughing out loud quite often.

Cole had taken over as parent when his sister had died shortly after the birth of her daughter Sarah. Emma, trying to get a new start after the death of her sister, moved to the same town where Cole and Emma lived. Cole met Emma who was Sarah's teacher at school for a craft party and was immediately impressed by Emma's kindness, laid-back attitude, and beauty.
