Grave Peril [Dramatized Adaptation]

Rate this book
Wizard for hire Harry Dresden gets mixed-up with the dead in this “haunting, fantastical novel”(Publishers Weekly) in the #1 New York Times bestselling series.

Harry Dresden’s faced some pretty terrifying foes during his career. Giant scorpions. Oversexed vampires. Psychotic werewolves. It comes with the territory, when you’re the only professional wizard in the Chicago area phone book.

But in all Harry’s years of supernatural sleuthing, he’s never faced anything like this: the spirit world’s gone postal. All over Chicago, ghosts are causing trouble—and not just of the door-slamming, boo-shouting variety. These ghosts are tormented, violent, and deadly. Someone—or something—is purposely stirring them up to wreak unearthly havoc. But why? And why do so many of the victims have ties to Harry? If Harry doesn’t figure it out soon, he could wind up a ghost himself…

Basic Plot: The spirit world is going crazy and Harry Dresden is on the case to figure out what exactly is going on.

Note: I'm pilfering from my own review of the regular book and modifying it to fit the Graphic Audio version.

Poor Harry never gets a break. He kills a bad guy, or does he? He gets a girlfriend, kinda sorta, and life keeps them from seeing each other too much. He has friends who pester him about his love life and whether or not he's going to go to church, but they also take care of him when he's beaten down and needing help, so I guess that's something.

This book introduces us to Michael, Knight of the Cross (yes, that cross). I like Michael because he is a Christian who actually follows what the religion says: love thy neighbor, forgive, judge not, etc... I also like that Harry has a tenuous relationship with religion and they still get along. See, PEOPLE CAN DISAGREE AND STILL BE FRIENDS. This book also introduces us to Thomas Raith, and the idea that there are different types of vampires. While the vampires have been part of the series since the beginning in Storm Front, this is the first time we find out the differences between black, red, and white court vampires.

The pacing of this book is a little different, but still pretty fast-paced and solid. Lots happened, enough to keep a first-time reader's head spinning for sure. For me, a Dresden Files veteran, I continually notice new detauls during rereads and re-listens. The Graphic Audio adds so much to the characters through the acting of the performers that it really captures the spirit of the stories. While I love James Marsters as the reader of the regular audiobooks, the guy playing Harry for these GA adaptations is actually doing what the book says. If Harry is shrieking and in the book, we hear him shrieking and giggling. Marsters has a different tone. It's a very different experience, and I love it.

Murphy isn't nearly as much a part of this book as in previous books or later books. This is unusual, but it works, being as she has no real reason to be active in this plot. I like that Butcher doesn't feel the need to insert characters just because they exist. I don't think I realized exactly how early Thomas and Michael had been introduced to the series. They become such fixtures later on that I think I thought they had come in much later. Susan gets such a raw deal. She's barely in this book, really, except as a thought in Harry's head, and that makes it hard to accept what happens later in the book. Very hard.
