Seen as evidence of a set of four books, this offers a dozen two-page spreads all with their own individual subject – a brief biography of a black pioneer, either in suffrage for women, equal rights, journalism or sport. I'd heard of only two or three before now, so this has the scope to be very educational, but without context and with these entries all being nicely pictorial and concise they don't cover a heck of a lot of ground, leaving the subjects a touch short-changed. Three and a half stars – and that probably uniquely to American educational libraries.
