The Perfect Reader Playbook by Juliet Clark and Gary MacDermid is a dynamic new book intended to help an author find readers who will become book champions for them, promoting their book so it reaches an even larger audience. Short, to the point, and written in a hip style that’s easy to understand and fun to read, best of all, The Perfect Reader Playbook is jampacked with solutions to the book marketing woes most authors face. Following this book’s tips will allow you to create a reader army to conquer the bookselling world.

In the preface, Gary explains how he built the system the book is based upon. He realized the publishing world was broken for entrepreneurs who had to find readers. He created this system to solve that problem. In the introduction, Juliet shares her own experiences with the self-publishing revolution of the early twenty-first century and how she failed, tried and tried again, and ultimately succeeded in finding tens of thousands of readers. By using the system Gary created and Juliet has proven works, author-readers of The Perfect Reader Playbook can also find legions of fans who are excited about and eager to help promote their books.

As Juliet states early on, The Perfect Reader Playbook isn’t just another “how-to-sell-more-books snoozer.” It’s about how to locate and build an audience before you’ve even finished your first draft. Juliet gives you a backstage pass to what agents and publishers are looking for—proof you can sell your book—and if you follow her and Gary’s advice, you’ll not only know how to do that but maybe decide you don’t even need a publisher or agent to help you—after all, you’ll have a reader army, and the publishers and agents might instead come looking for you.

For me, what really makes The Perfect Reader Playbook stand out is how it homes in on how to find your target audience by knowing your perfect reader’s demographic. To illustrate how to determine that, the authors have created a perfect reader they have named Samantha, and they use her throughout the book as an example. Juliet and Gary show you exactly how to find Samantha, how to get her attention, how to keep her interested, and how to recruit her as the general for your army. Samantha will then go out and find everything from your colonels to your privates to get your book sold.

Here is a brief description of Samantha:

“Enter Samantha—age forty-five, lives in Austin, Texas. Cold-brew enthusiast, LinkedIn binge-shopper, change catalyst by day, snack ninja by night. She makes $200,000 a year, with a penchant for online courses at ungodly hours. Married, two kids (Zoey and Max, always photobombing her Zooms), and a secret dream of world domination—once she finishes her backlog of half-read business books.

“Samantha is every marketer’s fantasy and every procrastinator’s cautionary tale. She’s the one who’ll buy your book, bring it to yoga, quote it in PTA meetings, and DM you for a personalized ‘impact roadmap.’ Samantha is your muse, your avatar, your ideal reader—and now, your reason to become a data-driven author ninja.”

However, forty-five-year-old Samantha isn’t your only customer/reader. Juliet and Gary show you how to reach Samanthas of all ages to get them excited about your book. You do that through what they call “magnetic messaging.” Magnetic messaging isn’t about selling. It’s about “constructing a gravitational pull around your brand.” When done right, it will make Samantha “not just stick around but drag her friends, mastermind group, inbox, and meme bank right along with her.”

Nor can you pigeonhole Samantha. She’s a complex person just like we all are. Juliet and Gary show you how to adapt not just to her different ages, but to her moods, personalities, and schedule so you can get her attention at the most serendipitous times. You’ll be able to meet Samantha when and where she scrolls and flex your message before her Instagram feed refreshes.

Anyone who has seen authors posting on social media knows that most authors quickly run out of content and soon are just posting random memes and inspirational quotes as a marketing tool. Juliet and Gary show you how, instead, to build four juicy and repeatable content pillars for your marketing. As a result, you won’t just get Samantha’s attention. You’ll keep her coming back like an addict because she craves what you’re serving—every week and everywhere.

The Perfect Reader Playbook will also tell you what not to do. As Juliet and Gary state, an opt-in newsletter or free tips PDF is so 2015. You need to be prepared to book market in the late 2020s and beyond. To make all the advice applicable, the book is filled with exercises, including “for the Bold Author.” For example, one exercise is: “Create a Day-in-the-Life for Samantha: Map out 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Where does your content help? Where do you insert a meme or sanity tip?”

The Perfect Reader Playbook is perfect for the beginning author or the author who has been in the game for decades. I’ve been writing and selling books for twenty years and know how easy it is to get stuck in a rut and only discover what doesn’t work. This book will keep you up-to-date with the latest avenues out there so you can create, keep, and grow the reader army you need to see your book sales skyrocket and enthusiasm for your book go viral. Read it, absorb it, and become the author Samantha wants to read.
