The story begins with Yang Yohan being betrayed by someone he considered a friend. In a dystopian society in which monster-infested rifts can suck people into a corrupted place called the Abyss, Yang Yohan is one such victim of the Abyss. He's pushed inside, doomed to a life of being corrupted into a monstrous creature that is so far from humanity. However, he ends up awakening as a Purifier, and not only survives but saves Lee Hyunmook, one of the most famous and powerful Awakeners who disappeared into the Abyss three years ago. He, and the rest of the people in his team, the Sunrse Guild, are forever changed and slightly insane from their experience in the Abyss. However, through Yang Yohan's influence, they find their way back to humanity and back out of the Abyss.
One could definitely read this story as symbolic, where the Abyss is a state of mind, which I particularly enjoyed. However, the side characters were very one-dimensional, which was very unfortunate considering how much time we spend with the Sunrise Guild. They had several qualities that defined them, and outside of their attachment to Yang Yohan, they didn't really have lives or connections. Again, they were one-dimensional.
Also, the Abyss arc was by far the strongest. Once they got out, the quality of the plot decreased.
However, I don't want anyone to think this wasn't a good read. I rated it 4 stars for a reason. It was very enjoyable overall, despite my minor complaints.
WHAT A MASTERPIECE!!! After a long time i read something and got hooked that i couldn't stop in-between. The storyline the characters everything was absolutely beautiful. Genuinely one of the best well written novel and characters the only complain I've is i wanted more chapters. I really hope people come across this novel more and read it because it's so underrated now I'm gonna wait gor manhwa to complete as well.
I wanna write my thoughts about each character so first of all.
Yang Yohan: Our little cute and kind sheep!! Our crybaby. I love how in the start mostly(not me) thought that he's gonna be just a crybaby loser type of character but it definitely wasn't that, it's just he felt everything extremely and expressed them so openly either it's happiness or sadness. Even after getting betrayed and thrown in abyss he still didn't felt got about revenge thing but I'm glad he didn't stop either he took it. And the way despite being scared he never left hyunmook's side and saved him so many times, even though hyunmook was much much stronger than him. That's exactly what made hyunmook fall for him that deeply.
Lee Hyunmook: Honestly what a character no like I've seen many green flags but they were only green towards their lovers but this man this immensely kind pure and noble man was green towards all good people. My heart just breaks every time we're told about what Hyunmook had to endure. He became a "monster" just so he could protect his teammates. Fk the people who screwed them over seriously omg how can you destroy such a lovely heart to the point it's unrecognizable. I've no words he made me cry the most he deserves all the best things in the world and he got em in the form of yohan his baby boy. The fact that he gave and gave and gave endlessly until he became a giant black hole himself. Yohan was so right that Hyunmook is a really good and kind person, but only giving endlessly like Hyunmook eventually turns you into a kind of monster too. It's why we've come to understand the importance of self care and maintaining boundaries, because always giving of yourself like this is also a form of self harm and self sabotage. The part that aches me so much was hyunwook gave his flesh to his precious ones but he gave a part of his eternal stone only to yohan it's like the eternal stone is essentially his soul so he gave that part of his soul to HIM thats how much he truly loved yohan. LEE HYUNMOOK NO ABYSS COULD EVER CORRUPT THE PURITY OF YOUR SOUL.
Yoon Seungryong: Another great character i felt so bad for him the things he went through but honestly the character who made me laugh a lot as well. He was so funny and understanding always trying to cheer up others.
Joo Hoyoung: He was the cutest one ofc after yohan he made me feel so protective of him even though he never fell into abyss but still he endured a lot too his little obsession with games is something i can relate. And the way many times he was so anxious and scared he never left nor gave up. And i love how he was the first one to step forward when yohan wanted to go save hyunmook.
Seo Yakrin: Honestly what a baddie she stole ma heart. I love the way author had made the female characters a complete baddies. Along with Jung Siyoung both were absolutely great written females. Fearless and strong and kind too.
Lee Chanha: last but not least our vice captain honestly i feel so relatable to him about being a clean freak. Cause God my situation would've been same if i had fallen into that dirty full of ugly and disgusting monsters. He was a really good character as well despite not being his fault about his teammates and him falling in abyss he still felt guilty.
Honestly all teammates were so good, so nice, and such kind people and i hate the way they fell into the hands of government and went through hell or worse than hell in that place for years or maybe a decade. But they still come out kind people who still wanted to protect innocent civilians. Plus i love the way how all members treated yohan like he was their little baby well he kinda was but still. Their bond was so beautiful and made me so emotional.
Now the two characters i genuinely hated the most Park seungmin and ko jaewon God the amount of hate I've for these two along with government and those teammates of seungmin all these people absolute garbage and evil. How low can people go for money and fame and they went lowest but I'm so so so happy they got the punishment for everything they did it was satisfying to read that.
In the end i just wanna talk a little about Yohan and Hyunmook's beautiful and sweet relationship how they both were ride and die for each other. The way their romance bloomed so beautifully in the most hellish place and how yohan was the light of hyunmook's darkness, how they merged together and everything was absolutely beautiful. In the end yohan was successful for bringing back hyunmook's inner human and that part was absolute cinema. The way i want an anime of this but idk if i can trust anyone to animate it beautifully one day but i hope. I'm gonna miss them so much. 🤍🖤

5/5 stars (Honestly, if I could give it 6 stars, I would.)
This book completely exceeded my expectations.
At first, I picked it up because the title, cover, and synopsis immediately caught my attention. I expected an interesting dungeon story, but what I got was so much more. The deeper I got into the novel, the harder it became to put down. I just kept reading until I reached the end.
The premise alone was enough to hook me. The Abyss is the largest and most dangerous dungeon in the world—a place no one has ever returned from. Even the legendary Number One hunter team disappeared there three years ago without a trace. When the MC is betrayed by someone he trusted and sacrificed to the Abyss, he unexpectedly meets the very person he has admired for years: the captain of that lost team.
From there, the story truly begins.
One of my favorite parts of the novel was the exploration of the Abyss itself. A large portion of the story takes place inside the dungeon, and I absolutely loved that. The Abyss felt mysterious, terrifying, and alive. Every new discovery made me want to learn more, and I never grew tired of exploring it alongside the characters.
The worldbuilding was another major strength. As the story progressed, more and more pieces fell into place—not only about the Abyss itself, but also about the world’s history, the truth behind the dungeons, and the larger plot unfolding in the background. It was obvious how much thought had gone into creating this world.
The MC was such a lovable protagonist. He’s emotional, cries easily, and starts the story looking somewhat naïve. I’ve seen people criticize him for that, but I honestly couldn’t disagree more. He’s only twenty years old, has spent his life being compared to his older brother, and has never truly been valued by his family. Once his family situation is explored, his insecurities make complete sense.
More importantly, being scared doesn’t make him weak.
He keeps moving forward despite being terrified. He chooses courage over comfort again and again. He wants to protect the people he loves, even when he’s in pain or convinced he’s out of his depth. Watching him slowly mature throughout the story was incredibly rewarding. Even as he grows stronger, he never loses the kindness that makes him such a bright presence among the rest of the cast. He really becomes the ray of light that this broken team desperately needed.
Speaking of the team, I absolutely loved them. After surviving three years inside the Abyss, they are no longer entirely human—not physically, mentally, or emotionally. They’re traumatized, changed, and forced to adapt in ways that would break most people. The story never tries to pretend otherwise, and I appreciated that realism. Their behavior isn’t always healthy, but considering what they’ve endured, it feels understandable.
The ML is a perfect example of that. He’s possessive, obsessive, and undeniably shaped by his time in the Abyss. I completely understand why some readers would see him as a walking red flag.
Personally?
He was absolutely my type.
His relationship with the MC was one of my favorite aspects of the novel. Watching someone so broken gradually reconnect with hope through the MC was incredibly satisfying.
I also loved how well the story balanced its tone. There was comedy, adorable moments, heartbreaking scenes, tragedy, suspense, and genuine emotional growth. It constantly shifted between making me smile and making my heart ache, and it did so naturally.
Overall, this novel delivered everything I wanted: fantastic worldbuilding, an unforgettable dungeon setting, lovable characters, meaningful character development, emotional depth, and a romance that completely won me over. I couldn’t stop reading, and by the end I honestly wished I could rate it higher than five stars.
If you’re looking for a hunter story with excellent worldbuilding, a fascinating dungeon, emotional character growth, and a cast that’s impossible not to root for, I wholeheartedly recommend giving this one a chance.
I enjoy reading dungeon/tower related stories. This one isn’t quite the same with it having rifts instead but the trope of having awakeners is still present. It has a different approach to the trope which I enjoyed reading.
The novel focuses on the awakeners being lost in a rift for years and turning corrupted. Our MC, Yang Yohan, falls into this same rift known as the Abyss and encounters an awakener, Lee Hyunmook, who was said to have been missing in the Abyss for 3 years. Lee Hyunmook, the ML has gone kinda insane from being in the Abyss for so long but retains some humanity when he’s with the MC. They then try their best to survive in the Abyss while finding a way out. Other side characters are also present - the ML’s other team members who were also stuck in the Abyss. There is a strong found family subplot which I love. Each side character is also very interesting.
After their escape from the Abyss, the story veers into a revenge arc which I enjoyed slightly less. The revenge seems a bit convoluted but the baddies all deserve it. I would’ve liked more world building and expansion on the government activities and plot but the story focuses more on the central theme which is savior MC helping ML through his trauma.
All in all, this is a fantastic read and I can’t wait for the manhwa. Manhwa is less detailed than the novel and I’d recommend reading the novel first.
This story has a great horror atmosphere! I loved the Abyss, the terrifying ML, the monsters and the overall ambiance of it. It always does a great job of showcasing the horrible trials of the characters, I could really feel their dispair and pain.
However, the revenge arc was honestly disappointing. We immediately lost all the layers of human complexity that we'd just gotten. It's boring, the enemies are stupid and one dimensional, which makes their eventual downfall uninspiring. It all falls flat.
I was also very unimpressed with the ending: it felt rushed, too much is left unanswered. The big final fight I was waiting for never happened. It really doesn't feel like an ending...
I also have to complain a bit about the main character : the fact that absolutely everyone loves him (except for the antagonists) was disappointing. It made sense for his team to absolutely love him, but everyone else? That's too much, there's no nuance, it makes him into some kind of Mary Sue Y/N boring character... I don't need him to be hated, just treated as an average guy from time to time is enough!
The creative monster descriptions were particularly entertaining, but parts of the story dragged on and it's weirdly comedic despite being in a literal nightmare full of monsters. I'm not sure I fully understood this story, there's a lot of focus on killing monsters and fighting injustice. A few details are intentionally withheld to piece together later on, which was fun, but compared to the amount of monsters the actual people stories are quite short.
Despite the awkward start, and Hyunmook's slight over protectiveness, they have a wholesome relationship (though most of the time it's just fighting together, the censored version must have even less).
"It seems that when I'm mad, I'm very drawn to you..."
Quite a good story with a great cast of characters, a good mix of happy and sad moments, some decent action and a rather Dungeon Meshi approach to food. I also thought the romance was particularly well written. The ML was a typical obsessive eldritch horror (that is typical right?) who doted on the MC in such a sweet way. The romance was green flags all around and the spice was spicy but also written in a way that made it clear both parties were consenting and happy to be there.
I have a few gripes about the ending - which went out with more of a fizzle than a bang - and the world building which (despite being pretty unique) didn't feel complete.
entertaining read and interesting world building! its a very plot-forward book which makes the relationships between characters a little bit lacking. They all have their own personalities, but because its mainly a survival piece, you don't really see much of their interactions outside of that context. There could've been more resolution on this point, but the plot more focused on action and doing rather than developing characters. overall satisfying read though.
