In these interconnected romantic novels, characters facing tragedy, heartbreak, and painful family secrets are drawn to the wild beauty of the natural world. Breaching whales and howling wolves refresh their spirits, but only human love can heal their souls.

Haley knew that carrying her twin sister’s baby would be a sacrifice. She just didn’t know how great.

Pregnant, overworked, and driven to the end of her rope by the neediness of the sister and widowed mother who depend on her, a high-powered young attorney seeks refuge with a week’s vacation on the Alaskan coast. As overachiever Haley soaks up the serenity of her unexpectedly agreeable surroundings, she finds something else she doesn’t expect -- deep feelings for the wildlife-loving boat captain who reminds her how to laugh.

With her unborn niece or nephew on the way and thousands of miles of ocean between their lives and careers, Haley and Ben settle for a friendship. But back home in California, the emptiness in Haley’s heart begins to fester. LONG TIME COMING

“Emotionally gripping, suspenseful and superb… I was held in wonderment over much of this story and realized early on to expect the unexpected. This is a story of trust, love, friendship and healing. Ms. Claire is an author I hope to see more of in the future. If Long Time Coming is any indication of her writing talent, I will be first in line at the bookstores to get more of her work. This is a positively splendid tale from start to finish and is highly recommended.” Reviewer’s Choice Award -- Road to Romance

“Two words. ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC! Edie Claire has written a wonderful novel about friendship, love, guilt and death… Utterly riveting.” 10/10 -- Contemporary Romance Writers

MEANT TO BE

“One of the best books I have read this year... An element of suspense runs through the pages, and the endearing tale builds to a crescendo of excitement and thrill while warming the heart. Meant To Be is a powerful story of love, healing, discovery and truth... I closed the covers wishing I could stay inside the green world of Meara and Fletcher's mountain. When I came across this author quite by accident and read her bio, I knew I’d love her books! Like me, she suffers with Hashimoto’s disease and would love to live in both Alaska and Hawaii.

Alaskan Dawn is the first book in author Edie Claire’s ‘Pacific Horizons’ series and centers around a remarkable woman facing challenging circumstances who finds healing in wild Alaska. Like Haley Olson, I too, am an introvert and learned to press pause on my stressful life and found what soothed and sustained me. Haley is an environmental lawyer for Merriweather, Falstaff, and Tynes in Newport Beach, California. She works long hours and devotes what time is left to her twin sister and their mother. She is cracking under the pressure of imbalance.

When her uncle leaves his property in Seward Alaska to his nieces, Haley heads up to Alaska intending on selling the property. Then she meets Ben Parker. The dreamy boat captain who runs excursions for Kenai Marine Tours is a naturalist with a degree in oceanography. He, too, enjoys his alone time.

Sparks fly but Hayley, although single, can’t give Ben anything more than friendship. You’ll have to read why!!!!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book featuring (1) the wild beauty of one of my favourite places on Earth, (2) a romantic drama, (3) the challenge of painful family secrets, and (4) the sacrifices we make for those we love.

This can be read as a standalone, but knowing that the stories are interconnected and are set in the two locations of my holiday, I need to read book 2….plus, I need to know what happens to the characters!

I hated (almost) everybody in this book: the h's sister, the h's mother, the H's sisters, and eventually the heroine.

If you like toxic, selfish and manipulative siblings and mothers who devour your soul, then here you go.

I wish I could rate this higher, because the book was written extremely well with an interesting story and characters put in unique situations that I've not seen in another story (always a plus!) The downfall for me were the characters themselves. I absolutely could not stand the background characters, specifically Haley's mother and sister. While they seemed to redeem themselves toward the end, their insufferable attitude at the beginning was a total turnoff. As for Haley, I just didn't feel much of a connection to her character. I guess I wanted her to stick up for herself more. As for Ben, his character was okay... kind of dull. Together they were sweet and everything, I just wasn't feeling it. Overall the story was a solid romance, but hardly memorable.

I loved the setting of this story. Edie bought Alaska to life. The glacier descriptions were beautiful and the writing flows well. And it was great to read a story with a strong environmental theme. This is the type of romance story that some people will really get into…

I personally did not have strong engagement with Haley and Ben and little emotional investment in their story. Haley and Ben were a little too perfect for me, which made the arc of this story somewhat predictable. However, I could see it play out as a movie much like Under the Tuscan Sun, which I enjoyed. I like more steam in my romances and after reading this and Charles Martins' The Mountain Between Us last week, I’m left wanting on that front.

Personally, I thought the plot of this book dragged on too long. So much of the turmoil could have been avoided if the main character had been firm and honest with her mother and sister. I was disappointed with Ben the main male interest in the novel when he let Haley spend her money on making their lives easier. He had been so independent and free spirited until close to the end of the book. I did finish the book, but wouldn't rate it higher than a 3 star novel.

Despite its super slow pace, I still enjoyed this book. Finally we come across people who don’t jump into a relationship, but rather examine their feelings and consider all angles carefully. In all honesty, I am glad for romance stories like this; it’s refreshing. Haley and Ben’s connection and mutual attraction was more about their personalities than their looks. As far as I’m concerned, I've had enough of the steamy & hot contemporary romances – getting older, I look for less superficiality in a story – and although this was still a light read, there was courtesy, respect and generosity, which are values we don’t experience enough these days.
Also, I was in awe of the beauty of Alaska and the author did a great job bringing to life this unique backdrop.

Two people from totally different worlds. She’s a high profile lawyer in corporate environmental law. He is a naturalist with deep felt anger for pollution companies. Companies, which she works for through her firm. 5 days, she spends 5 days in Alaska and can’t forget the countryside or Ben. Complications keep them apart and Hailey reaches her breaking point before finding her way back into his life.

I 'thought' i'd read this book before - but I couldn't find it in my Kindle or any review. Read the first few pages and now I know why. Who on earth goes somewhere they've never been before and doesn't even do the most minimal research into the geography, the weather... etc etc.. etc.

Nope.

I absolutely loved this book. From the way the surrogacy storyline was written right down to the communication of Haley and Micah by letters. This story was sweet without being saccharine, and pulled me in right from the very first page. The descriptions of Alaska and the boat trips were just stunning. I was right there with Haley every step of the way as she experienced all these things. And the descriptions how she felt so suffocated by her work and the demands on her, oh! Haven't we all felt these things? At least I have.
A wonderful, wonderful story I would highly recommend. 5/5

This book showed up as a daily special in my email and since it sounded cute, I thought I'd give it a try. I'm so glad I did! What a neat story! I loved Ben's quick wit! I appreciated the maturity that Ben & Haley showed when first meeting and developing a new relationship. The author did an amazing job of painting pictures in describing the Alaskan scenery. It made me want to return! And I've already been missing Maui! Great clean read!

I found this book to go on and on, it dragged out with too much repetition in my opinion. I almost didn't finish it but I persevered. I wasn't impressed with the main characters and Haley's family drove me crazy. She's a lawyer and puts up with that? And Ben was weak for the most part. I liked the story line, though, and it was not badly written, if that makes any sense after my first comments.

Haley just needs time out for everything. Her sister & mother are driving her insane and she just needs some peace & quiet so that she can rest. Their uncle died not so long ago and left them his house so this is the perfect opportunity to go and see it and be alone with the bump for awhile. She is trying so hard to make everyone happy, she knows that things are very tense between her twin sister Micah and her brother in law Tim with waiting for test results. She loves them both but they are putting her in a awful position. Her mother takes her sister side every time and she just wants to stay out of it. She is carrying their unborn baby and all the stress is getting to her.
Now that she is in Alaska she can breathe and just rest but her plans go out of the window pretty soon. Her car gets stuck she meets her uncle's tenant and she starts feeling far too much. Ben looks what he sees and he knows that there is so much more to Haley's story and he won't push her. They have so much fun together but Haley needs to leave earlier than planned so what is going to happen with them? They have a connection but they both want different things. Can the long distance thing work for them? What will happen once the baby is born can Haley give up her life for the man that she loves? Ben decides that he will move closer to Haley but she knows that he will be giving up everything for her, will she take the reins and plot the course of their new adventure together? A great read.

Alaskan Dawn is a slow-burn romance but not for the usual reasons. Haley Olsen knew that offering to carry her twin sister's baby would be a sacrifice. She just never guessed how great! When her sister and her widowed mother were getting on her last nerve, she knew she had to get away. On top of that, she is an overworked high-power lawyer. A getaway vacation is what she needed. Her uncle had left her and her sister a cabin in Alaska. She felt this was the place she needed to go.

There are two other cabins on the land she had inherited. One was rented by a handsome captain of a tour boat. His name was Ben Parker. He was everything she was not. Genuine. Uncomplicated. Serene. Down-to-earth. Joyful. Doesn't seem fair to find your perfect soulmate when you are four-months pregnant with your sister's baby. Alaska is surrounded by sights and sounds that were peaceful, natural and beautiful. With the help of Ben she gains a new perspective. She never wanted to leave. To leave Alaska or Ben. Reality would take her away from all this serenity and she didn't know when she would or could return.

The boat tour in this book was so descriptive. I loved picturing the whales and other sea creatures. It had one of the best descriptions of summer in Alaska. I would have read the book just for that!

Pregnant, in fact carrying a child for her twin sister, and driven to the end of her tether by the neediness of said twin sister and her widowed mother, and overworked, young attorney Haley decides to take a week off and look after the estate their deceased uncle has left her and her sister. The serenity of the wild landscape manages to remind her to just breathe, as does handsome young Captain Ben, who shows her what fun and laughter is. Ben follows the whales and is a nomad, Haley is an over-achieving lawyer, and both are thousands of miles away from each other. Will the beginning friendshiop between them have the chance to develop into anything more?
The first few chapters, I thought the plot way way off anything realistic, and the characters overdrawn and quite unrealistic as well. But the deeper I delved into the story, the more they grew on me, until I fell in love with the main protagonists and overlooked anything on purpose that still dared to raise its unrealistic head - the story and the storytelling were just too good.
I really enjoyed how the relationship between the main protagonists developed and stalled and continued, and really cheered whenever they found a solution for the next problem.
Definitely a series I be following.

A Wonderful Story

I loved this story! It included a set of adult twin girls whose parents had left them in the care of their devoted downs syndrome aunt for much of their growing up years.
She died unexpectedly when they left for collage. One sister married and longed to start a family. Sadly she was not able to have a child. Her advocate twin sister selflessly offered to be a surrogate mother for her and her husband. The hysterics of her paranoid sister drove her crazy. Her mother made it much worse. In desperation she took a (totally unacceptable - from her legal firm's point of view), week's leave. Her sanity was at stake. An uncle had recently died, leaving his home and two guest cottages in Alaska to the twins. She decided to go and view them before putting them on the market. While there, she met and fell in love with one of her new tenants. His love of nature and nature conservation inspired her. His passionate defence of all things wild and beautiful drew her to him.
Her representing the Company responsible for destroying great tracts of land and nature was a contentious point between them. Read it! I think you will love this beautiful romance too.

Alaska and Hawaii, what isn't there to love about that? I received this book for free but wanted to read it because of a love for most things Alaska. This review is voluntarily written because this is a great book. Haley and Ben meet under strange circumstances. Their world's could not have been more different. Traversing the pages of this book will lead the reader through some of the most beautiful scenery on the planet. In meeting Haley and Ben, and a supporting cast of characters, the reader will follow a story that has a wealth of emotion, from tears and angst to laugh out loud humor. Throughout the well paced story the reader gets to know Ben and Haley and find in the end whether two worlds so far apart can ever be joined so that both still remain whole. Alaskan Dawn is a great love story you won't want to miss.

I really enjoyed this book. It is a sweet story of love and sacrifice. The main characters, Haley and Ben meet and fall in love over 5 short days when Haley takes a break from her high powered job as an attorney, to visit a property she and her sister inherit from their uncle in Alaska. Haley is pregnant with her sister, Micah's baby. Ben is a boat captain for whale watching tours. He is an environmentalist. Due to the clients she represents, they clash. She leaves due to job related issues. Over the course of the next 6 months, they begin to build their relationship by writing letters to each other. The characters are well developed and believable. By the end of the book, I felt like I knew all of them. There is no Nora Roberts or Penny Reid sex scenes, and this is refreshing. The story did not need them. I will defiantly read more books in the series.

A Must Read!!

Love this book! It is full of self discovery, life stressors and how to overcome!

Haley cares for her family and takes her job responsibilities to the extreme. By doing so, she's given up a huge part of herself. She feels like she's losing control and will explode into a million pieces any minute now. Recognizing this, the perfect opportunity to get away arises and she takes it! It's a long journey but eventually she gets there!

If you've ever felt overwhelmed, burnt out, like you're losing yourself and about to lose it completely, this book is for you! It makes you stop and really reflect on your life, where it's at and where you really want to be! Self discovery & loving yourself enough to make a change is so important! Adding some romance never hurts either!

Haley Olson's body isn't her own. Right now it belongs to the tiny human growing inside her. But her mother and sister also think it belongs to them. Between them and her demanding job as an environmental attorney, she need a break. So inheriting property from her estranged uncle in Alaska couldn't come at a better time for her. Then she arrives at the property and realizes he also spent more time at work and home. Luckily, he has rental properties and a renter who proves exactly the rescue she needs.

Clearly, I need to read descriptions of books before I commit. I generally don't read romance novels, but this one was very sweet and mostly innocent. Besides, the characters have a deep affection for animals. I might want to take an Alaskan cruise now, but I am not sure I'll be reading the next one as it started to get racy at the end.

Pleasant afternoon’s entertainment

Enjoyed the in depth descriptions of Alaska would love to visit one day and this has made it even more appealing. Interesting story of Ben and Haley a little different from the run of the mill romances. Being a surrogate birth mother for her twin Micah and husband Tim, Haley runs off to Alaska for some 6 days peace from her high pressure job as an Attorney and there meets Environmentalist and Boat Captain Ben. Their attraction and subsequent romance is well thought out and draws the reader in to learn more of their families and every day lives. The supporting characters add to the enjoyment of this novel it gets 4 Stars from me and I recommend you read it worth the time and money!

Meh...

I don’t know if my lack of enjoyment in this book is a reflection of my prejudice against the legal profession or I simply didn’t care for the main character. I tried to look beyond her profession, but later it became more of the story and I couldn’t.
I give the author kudos on getting most of the Alaskan details right. I only disagreed with her description of moose poop. LOL
The story is high on drama and angst...her family is over the top.
As much as I wanted to know the ending...I found I began to really dislike her once her job became part of the story. I DO recommend this book for those who enjoy high family drama and the wonders of Alaska. I am certain that there is a HEA ending in there after all the drama resolves.

3.5 stars rounded up

The first book I’ve read from this author. I did enjoy the book and will remember the marine animals the most. The romance was a long burn and very clean for people who want that. The characters were well developed but the sister and mother were portrayed very poorly at the beginning.

I almost gave it 3 stars because the hero was a little too perfect and seemed to read the heroine’s mind too much. Also, the heroine was a little too self sacrificing to seem to always put others before herself as a successful lawyer but I’ll accept it as part of the story line. But overall it was a nice read.

Never give up on the one you love!

Haley didn't know what she would find when she got to Alaska. She found a dumpy cabin, two decent cabins and a handsome young man. Haley brought many problems with her. Ben loved Alaska and being captain of an excursion boat. Trying to deal with her family, being a surrogate for her sister and being a top lawyer was too much for her right now. Being in Alaska was so calming for her. Haley needed to get back to California but her heart wasn't there. She loved Alaska and had feelings for Ben. I found it hard to put this book away. Find out if Haley found the love of her life and finally got back to Alaska!

Lovely...

I greatly enjoyed Alaskan Dawn! I " purchased" this for nothing from Book Bub, and not having much experience with free offers, my expectations were low. But I' m happy to say, I was pleasantly surprised. I loved the chemistry between Ben & Haley. Their dialogue was witty and so sweet. I found myself either laughing out loud or exclaiming AHHHH! Ms. Claire described Alaska (& the other locales) so vividly & in detail, I could imagine it, as if I was there. I definitely recommend this book. This was my first one by this author, but I know it won't be the last

Lovely

I truly loved Ben! I didn't like the author leaving them childless though. Ben didn't seem the type not to want children. It felt hastily penned. After being a surrogate for her sister, Haley's decision to be childless also seemed out of character. I got a nit annoyed with her defense of her job too, knowing that the company she was defending more than like was guilty of pollution... Enough said. I liked the book enough with those issues to give it four stars. I doubt IRL the lawyer would have left her job to follow her nomad husband. But hey... it's fiction.

I found this book totally captivating. I had no expectations and believed, as most romance books do, it would follow the normal romance plot line...Boy meets girl, falls in love, a misunderstanding happens, break-up, get back together. When it did not, I was totally pleased. The settings were enthralling, one I've visited and one I have not. The pure and chaste love between Haley and Ben was refreshing as I didn't have to skim over pages of sex scenes. (I find leaving it to the imagination much more appealing.) This was a free book and now I want to read the sequel; I'll even pay for it!

Wonderful story!

I enjoyed this book as much as any I've read. I can't say why - it's a beautiful love story with problems to work out that seem insurmountable. It must be the descriptive writing that puts you in Alaska, feeling the ice, riding the waves watching dolphins & whales & seeing in my mind Haley & Ben plus all the other wonderful characters you meet. It all worked together to transport me for awhile to places I could just enjoy again - Edie Clare's creative world!

Enjoyable read

This book takes the reader from Alaska to Hawaii to experience the beauty and majesty of nature. When a true conservationist, Ben, meets his new Alaskan landlord, Haley, sparks fly immediately. However, Haley is a corporate lawyer for a lawfirm who defends the worst polluters. That is just one of several obstacles they face. This book tackles this and all the other obstacles standing in the way of their true happiness. Easy to read and believable characters.

I read the reviews and disagree. I thought the author did a terrific job showing the emotional turmoil caused by Haley’s mother, sister and the loss of her beloved Aunt Jaynie. Haley is selfless and puts everyone else before her own needs. We all know someone like that or should. Ben is the perfect guy for Haley. He is confident in his own skin and has found his passion. I feel that this author has not only nailed the book with her descriptive talent in making Alaska and Hawaii come alive for the readers but she has woven a complex romance that challenges us until the very end. Well done!
