Nate Wilder writes small-town romance—steamy, emotional, and full of the kind of chemistry that keeps you reading past midnight. A former journalist and chef, he's a devoted romance reader who believes the world needs more love, more steam, and more happily-ever-afters. He writes from Washington state, where he is supervised in all matters by his opinionated cat, Nala.
To say I devoured Until Our Hearts Collide is an understatement—I started it around 6 p.m. after work and didn’t look up until nearly midnight. This romance is the fifth installment in the interconnected Midnight Men series by Nate Wilder and features five brothers, all adopted.
It is set in the fictional town of Dark River in Washington State, and each brother finds love as the series progresses. All books have plenty of heart and steam, and conclude with a very satisfying, happy ending. While longtime readers will appreciate the continuity, this book works well as a standalone if you’re new to the series.
Until Our Hearts Collide pairs two professional chefs: Alex Midnight and Isabelle Beaumont. Isabelle, 26, is a classically trained chef raised under the watchful eye of her controlling and wealthy father, Jean-Pierre. Though he offers her the prestigious position of head chef at one of his successful New York restaurants, he struggles to relinquish control and often comes across as the villain.
Isabelle, determined to prove herself on her own terms, is currently running a successful pop-up in California, with glowing reviews from critics and her team. She’s in the trenches working hard because she cares, and I couldn’t help but admire her vision and drive.
Meanwhile, Alex—already familiar to readers of earlier books—is ready to step out from the success of Harbor & Ash, the restaurant he co-owns with his brother Theo, and pursue a new venture in Seattle. When Jean-Pierre offers to finance Alex’s dream, it comes with strings attached: Alex must travel to California, evaluate Isabelle’s leadership and culinary skills, report back to her father—and, of course, not get romantically involved with her. Ahh, this forbidden romance is also enemies to lovers as you will quickly surmise, and it doesn’t take long for them to create plenty of steam of their own–in and out of the kitchen.
The chemistry between Alex and Isabelle is immediate and electric. Their meet-cute is genuinely funny, setting the tone for a relationship that you will be routing for. Isabelle is passionate, confident, and fiercely talented; she knows her worth and has worked hard to earn it. Alex is equally driven, and watching him fall for her—despite the rules—was such a joy to read.
He is so smitten, genuinely proud of her, and empowering, and I loved how he didn’t play games. Loved how they prioritized and elevated each other, and how they navigated what to do about her father. I liked how she leaned on him and shared her burdens, and how protective and comforting he was. A true hero!
Wilder’s background as a Chef shines through in every chapter. The culinary world isn’t just a backdrop—it’s integral to the story. The descriptions of food, technique, and kitchen dynamics are vivid and immersive, adding richness and authenticity. The intensity and precision Alex and Isabelle bring to their craft mirror the evolution of their relationship, making their journey feel grounded and real.
What truly elevates this book is the author’s extraordinary descriptive ability. Every dish is rendered in such vivid detail that you can almost taste it—the crackle of a perfectly seared crust, the silkiness of a carefully emulsified sauce, the sharp brightness of citrus cutting through richness. The kitchen scenes are electric, filled with tension, rhythm, and sensory overload. You don’t just read about the food; you experience it.
At times, the prose borders on indulgent—in the best possible way. Lush, decadent, and unapologetically rich, the descriptions linger on textures, aromas, and flavors with an almost obsessive attention. Yet it never feels gratuitous; instead, it reinforces how deeply these chefs live through their work. Food becomes their language, their battlefield, and their means of expression.
Beyond the culinary artistry, the relationship between the two chefs adds emotional depth. Their shared joy of their craft creates both camaraderie and rivalry, pushing each of them to greater heights while also exposing their vulnerabilities. The author skillfully balances the intensity of the kitchen with quieter, introspective moments, giving readers a full picture of both their professional and their personal lives.
Alex’s family makes several appearances as well, and I love how close and supportive they are. They are spread across the county and still make time for family, and embrace Isabelle without hesitation. We also meet Mia in this book, a professional dancer, who will be our heroine in the final book of this series.
Overall, this book is a feast—not just for food lovers, but for anyone who appreciates meticulous storytelling and richly drawn characters. It’s a sensory experience that leaves you both satisfied and hungry for more. I loved the ending, especially the scenes in Napa Valley, and couldn’t stop smiling.
So very happy to report that after the last book, I thoroughly and completely enjoyed this one. I thought I probably would considering how much I loved the first three. This book gives Alex his HEA. If you’ve read the previous books, and you really should, Alex and Theo are brothers and partners in a very high end and successful restaurant in the small town of Dark River. Though Alex loves what he and Theo have, he wants to branch out and start up another restaurant. To that end he has been meeting with a world renowned chef Jean Pierre, who wants to back Alex in opening a restaurant in Seattle. But he wants a favour from Alex. He has a daughter, Isabelle, also a chef, who is slated in to take over Jean Pierre’s flag restaurant in NYC soon. But before this happens, she is opening a pop-up kitchen in Napa Valley. I have no idea what that is but I just went with it. Her father wants Alex to go to this kitchen to help and oversee Isabelle and report back to him.
Isabelle is less than impressed with this plan. Her father has always been very controlling over Isabelle and doesn’t really trust her true talents. He thinks he knows what’s best for her and refuses to see how good she really is.
I really like both Isabelle and Alex. Isabelle is feisty and being half French, somewhat hot tempered. Alex is the exact opposite, quite laid back and he and Isabelle are perfect for each other. They are Yin and Yang, and so cute together. I really, really like them both. The world of cuisine is strong in this book and I don’t have a drop of foody in me so when they talked food, what with both being chefs, they might as well have been speaking a foreign language, but it didn’t bother me me at all. Again I just went with it. Nate Wilder writes really enjoyable and well written romance books and once again he really impressed me. This whole series is available on KU though I purchased mine as they will also make great reread books so I had to have my own copies. Try them if they sound like something you might enjoy.
I’ve been enjoying this series by Mr. Wilder. All the brothers are great, each one having something unique that builds the story. Here, Alex is the feature brother. He was always the one who intrigued me when brief glimpses appeared in the previous books. I really enjoy the cooking aspect of this story. The details of putting together a meal with this level of complexity is something I would love to be able to witness in real life. I loved the memories Isabelle had with her grandmother in France (reminded me of very early memories of my own with my very Polish grandma!). And I loved the setting I the vineyards of Napa, the idea of a special pop-up and can so picture the beautiful little French restaurant Alex and Isabelle visited. And always fun to see the other brothers again!
You always know the eventual ending of a HEA novel but, the fun of reading lies between pagec1 and "The End". The fifth book in this series tells Alex Midnight's story. Alex is a chef who along with his brother, Theo owns a restaurant in their hometown. While Theo is content, Alex has always wanted to spread his wings. When he is offered an opportunity by a well known restauranter, Alex is in position to open a new restaurant in Seattle. But, there is on stipulation...he is to shadow his daughter, Isabelle at her pop-up in Napa and then report back to the father AND he is not to become involved with her. Now, the fun begins!
