Set in a futuristic Detroit, this novel is the perfect read for fans of dystopian series such as the Hunger Games, Divergent, and Maze Runner. Written by USA Today Bestselling Author Tamryn Ward, Malevolent is the story of a dark dystopian world and one determined girl’s story of courage, self-sacrifice, and love. For twenty girls and boys, the Elect is the chance of a lifetime--the opportunity to not only escape a life of backbreaking work, pain, and hunger but to save their families from that life too. But for Eva Pearson, being selected as a member of the Elect means sacrifice. It means pain. It means danger. And possibly death.
There's a big difference between books having similarities & a book being a play by play of another book with nothing but a few name changes. And, that's basically what was done here. You could take a check list from Divergent and every element of this book would be checked off. From dropping blood in the faction bowls and training scenes to character assassinations and brainwashing, this is NOTHING but a piss poor replica of Divergent.
To add insult to injury... This book was like taking store-brand cola and trying to pass it off as Coke. It was condensed and watered down, ironically enough skipping all that made the action, romance, world, and plot great from Divergent.
The worst part, or the best part depending on how you look at it, is that it ends when it actually should be climaxing. Dude is a terrorist... Chick finds out.... Chick needs to choose a side... She picks a side and bam book ends. Lmao @ complete novel... Psst.
If you've read Divergent, then you've read a MUCH better and completed version of this book. If you haven't read Divergent, then read it instead of this crap!
I would like to say that I did not start reading this book with high expectations, but this was a total dissapointment, to say the least. The first thing I thought when I started reading this was, wow this is a bit like Divergent, but it will soon get original. That did not happen, it was exactly like Divergent, and I do not understand why someone hasn't sued the author. It wasn't even a good copy of Divergent.
Somehow Tamryn managed to copy Divergent, (down to almost everything, but the names) and it being so bad. It was a watered down version of a good book.
I hate giving books one star, but the combination of the unoriginality and the terrible writing really ruined this story for me. A lot of people said it was a poorly written Divergent and I have to say I completely agree. However, I'm going to ignore the Divergent parallels and continue reviewing this book as if I'd never read Divergent before.
Now, I'm going to be honest I was very hesitant to read this book due to all the poor reviews, but I'm a sucker for all thing dystopian and any book that doesn't fall into the trend of taking place in Chicago, LA or New York City, I decided to give this story a read. I won't say that I regret my decision since no time spent reading is a waste, however, I will say that I didn't enjoy this novel. At all. There was so much potential that I felt was wasted. I could practically hear the plot crying for some better story weaving. The author, in my opinion, just didn't hit the mark. The writing was boring, dull, and almost childish at times. I just had a hard time believing that these were thoughts coming out of a person's head, that any character actually narrates life like this. It was almost painful at times to read certain passages because of how poorly written it was.
The plot itself was also wasted. There was so much room to dig deeper, to create a darker more emotional story, but no. It was all very generic. Innocent girl must complete a dangerous task, people underestimate her except for the love interest who keeps telling her you can do it! Kind of like Bob the Builder. "Can we fix it?" "Yes we can!" There were also tons of plot wholes and questions left unanswered. I realized that this is a series, but I would have thought that we could at least know what the whole "Great Decimation" and who the Amiga are. I think the Amiga are some robot creatures who caused the Great Decimation, but I don't know for sure. Who knows? They could be aliens for all I know. There was also this huge plot controversy that I found. It said that Helen had been discharged, but then she showed up ten minutes later in phase 2. What?!?!?! That doesn't make any sense. Is she there or not? Too many mistakes like that ruined the plot for me.
The characters were another issue for me. There was nothing to them. I just didn't feel anything for any of them. Plus, I didn't feel like I got to know any of them. They were all flat, 2-demsional characters. I just wish there had been more to them especially Eva. She was the main character who I should have been struggling along with, but in reality I just felt detached from her. I prefer feeling what my characters feel. When their heart breaks, my heart breaks. When they feel pain, I feel pain. When they're happy, I'm happy too. With Eva, I felt nothing, but indifference.
Overall, I just couldn't get into this book. I'm sorry, but I don't recommend it to anyone even those who love dystopian.
After having read this book straight through, I'm still not sure what I think of it. Overall, the story was engaging, evidenced by my straight read. However, I was left with more questions than answers.
Eva and her friends want nothing more than to be one of the Elect, which will give them a chance to work for their nation as well as provide money for their families. They are tested, and Eva is chosen from her community. She is whisked away and begins a grueling training regime with others from different communities.
So, on to my questions: - What happened to society to get to this point? And who the heck are the Amiga, who apparently run things? Are they aliens? People? - What was the test? As far as I could tell, Eva sat in a dentist's chair, drank some potion, got a little loopy ... and that was it. What was that all about? - Why the giant wall? To keep people in or things out? And where in the world are they? - Who are the terrorists? And why are they fighting?
The book ends on a cliffhanger so obviously there will be a second, though at this point I'm not sure I'm going to be reading it. I also saw lots of parallels with Divergent, and a few with The Hunger Games. Not necessarily a bad thing, but also not very original anymore.
For a cheap or free novel, it's ok. Just don't expect to understand much when you're through.
Suspiciously similar to Divergent and other YA novels. It starts off a little different. The main character Eva, a twin, wants to help her family by being selected to be an elect. She doesn't know what that entails, but it would mean more money for her family.
But once she goes to school for the testing, that is where the originality ends and the copy of Divergent begins. From there on out, it was like reading an underdeveloped version of Divergent. If you've read divergent and other YA, this is pretty much an exact copy. I have read a lot of YA and never come across something quite as unoriginal. Consider yourself warned.
I did finish this book, though most of it I was being annoyed by the waste of my time and I kept thinking it read like mediocre fan fiction. Then after finishing, I went to Amazon and skimmed all the reviews (29) where slightly more than half of them are 5-star raves. However, most of the remainder mention that The Elect: Malevolent seems to be a knock off (er, rip off) of Divergent. One reviewer even suggested it was actually Divergent fan fiction. Interesting thought.
The premise/story is interesting enough, but the writing is disappointing, repetitive and not particularly believable. Sad.
Couldn't do it. It bugged me too much of how at the beginning of the book it was too much like Divergent. There was nothing original about this book. Someone said that this was just bad FanFiction and I would have to agree. All you had to do was replace the names in this book with the ones from Divergent and you would have a FanFiction story. I don't know how it ends and I was curious since a lot of people said they enjoyed the ending but I hate when books steal from other authors. Yes, I've read books with similar storylines but this was pushing it. Thank God I didn't pay anything for it (It's free on Amazon with a Kindle Unlimited subscription), or else I'd be really pissed.
What a terrible book! It seemed more like Divergent than Hunger Games (no clue why amazon compared the two).

What kind of book has a guy almost rape a girl (graphically) & then have her rush to try to save him? WTF!
The end of this book was just awful. So many things were forgotten. Why, if George gave trainee's the guns for phase three was the main girl (cannot even remember name, that is how disgusted I was by her character) not given one? Who was shooting at the trainees? Mattie? how was that not a question she asked?
i wasted a day and a half on this thing. There were so many bad things here (to lazy to detail them all) so I just suggest passing this one up.
Bullshit. The author basically took the story line of Divergent and changed tiny little things. All she really did was change the names of the characters and take out all the great stuff that made readers fall in love with divergent. You felt no connection with the characters because everything was rushed.
The book was a giant waste of my time and the author should be sued for stealing from divergent.

I enjoyed reading, I really liked the ending. I love dystopian novels and this was no exception. The only problem I found was that it is very similar to the Divergent series. Which was not that big of a deal since it had enough differences to make it enjoyable. I don't know if she plans on a second book but I will be keeping my eyes peeled for more.
This 's a total rip off of the book The Fringe by Tarah Benner. I am so upset I'm seething. Do not buy this book. I'm appalled that this person is trying to steal another person's hard work.
This book was so good. Kudos to author and in some ways it was like Divergent but really it was different. I loved it! Please please have a sequel! I want to know what happens next!!!!!
Started off similar to another novel I have read in this genre...then there was a surprising twist which I was happily surprised that it took a different direction which makes me interested in Book 2.
I loved that the story had a good balance in suspense, action and romance. It was also a relief to have the plot wrapped up in one book, rather than wading through another trilogy.
