Save Me at the River: Crossing Bridges Duet Book 2

Rate this book
Cullen
Every time I close my eyes, I see Hudson crashing into the river.
I hear the splash. The sirens. The panic in the paramedics' voices when his heartbeat stopped.
Hudson barely survived.
Now he's healing. Smiling more. Learning how to live again.
But I can’t move on.
I can't stop replaying every warning sign I ignored, every moment I should have done something differently. Sleep comes in fragments, and every waking thought revolves around keeping Hudson safe.
Because the danger isn’t over.
The threats that nearly tore our lives apart haven’t disappeared, and I’ll do whatever it takes to make sure Hudson never slips back into that darkness again.
Even if protecting him costs me everything.

Hudson
I thought stepping off that bridge would quiet the storm in my mind.
Instead, I woke up and had to face it.
Now I'm living with the aftermath of a choice I can’t take back. The guilt. The grief. The people I hurt. Every day is a battle between the person I used to be and the person I’m trying to become.
Surviving was only the beginning. Healing is messier.
Some days I feel strong enough to believe I deserve a future. Other days, the darkness tries to creep back in.
But for the first time I want to fight for the future that once felt impossible.
The problem is, while I’m learning how to live again, Cullen is still holding onto the weight from that day. His guilt is turning into anger. The fear of losing me again is consuming him.
He saved my life.
Now it’s my turn to make him believe that he doesn't have to lose himself to keep me safe.

Looking at this duet as a whole, I think this was a great ending to the overarching story. It brought me a lot of joy to see these two finally get their happily ever after. And all of the relevant plot lines were addressed and wrapped up.

This is an emotional read though. Book one left off on a very dark moment for our characters and this book explores the aftermath of that. It doesn’t pull its punches or sugarcoat things at all. Which is something I can really appreciate because a lot of books specifically romance books handling these topics – tend to focus on how these things impact the character themselves and rarely touch how they impact a romantic relationships and family dynamics. However... that being said I do wish we saw atleast a little bit more of Hudson’s healing journey. It felt like he just went to therapy and was suddenly okay. And while we see a-lot of Cull’s mental health… the healing aspect towards the end for him is also pretty quick. Like we spend 3/4ths of the novel watching Cull deteriorate and fight against getting help; then there is one scene with Hudson and he’s suddenly able to handle therapy, fast forward a few off-page sessions later and it’s like he’s all good too. As I said, I can appreciate the raw openness we experience with their mental health struggles; I just wish we got that same energy with their healing. Something specific I would’ve really enjoyed is a heart-to-heart between Cull and his dad. They have sort of a big blowout mid book and it just never really gets addressed; I feel like it would’ve been really great for Cull’s character development for him and his dad to have a really honest, raw, open conversation about what was happening.

Separate from this, I will also say the stalker plot, kind of lost its edge a bit. In book one it felt really high stakes and you had a lot of anxiety about who was doing it and there were different suspects. But that plot line kind of just fell into the sidelines in this book. And it felt almost like an afterthought, not just in the overall pot, but even to most the characters (with exception to Cull). Same thing also happened with the allegations plot. It kind of just all got solved off page. I will give Kenzie credit where it's due though; she kept who the stalker was under wraps for most of the story. There is a specific scene like a chapter or so before the reveal that immediately made it clear who it was. But I think that was probably intentional. As far as the actual stalker reveal, it was a bit anticlimatic and I can’t say it made total sense to me either. We do get an explanation, but I was just kind of like – well... all right... I guess that makes sense.

That being said, I did like the ending. And I liked where we left off with all the characters. Hadley definitely redeemed herself, I was satisfied with what happened to Ella (call me evil idc), Archer and Theo seemed like they’re gonna have their work cut out for them in their book, and we got introduced to a new character - Mason, whose story I was left probably most excited for/looking forward to reading in the future.

Overall, like I said, this was a good completion to the duet. I’m excited to see what Kenzie releases moving forward. If you enjoyed book one definitely check it out.

We FINALLY have the conclusion of Hudson & Cullen’s story after that cliffhanger from book 1 nearly annihilated me. If you haven’t read book 1, Meet Me at the River, you must read it before reading Save Me at the River. Please check your trigger warnings. Your mental health and safety matter. There may be spoilers ahead so please read with caution.

We pick up from the cliffhanger where Hudson is in the hospital and Cullen is out of his mind. He’s so far gone that he begins to struggle with his own mental health (PTSD). He considers that if Hudson is no longer in this world then he shouldn’t be either. He places a lot of blame on himself for not “seeing the the signs” or “being more present”. There were parts of Cullen’s POV that ripped my heart out and stomped on it. I was an emotional wreck on how he was feeling.

When we finally get Hudson’s POV, he’s in no better shape. He is still struggling with his anxiety and depression and the aftermath of the bridge. He needs time but he’s also very angry and confused. Hudson has a very dark sense of humor following the events of the bridge and Cullen becomes desperate and reckless to save Hudson from his demons. Side note: I love the symbolism behind the bubbles and ‘favorite things’. It’s always been a way for Hudson and Cullen to comfort one another without words. It’s like they have their own unspoken language.

The boys finally reconcile but both have a long journey to healing their souls. Kenzie takes us on a beautiful, emotional journey that makes us fall in love with Hudson and Cullen all over again. It is a bumpy road full of lurking stalkers, emotional healing, trauma and love. This was a very hard fought HEA for Hudson and Cullen but trust if you stick with it that you won’t regret. For those of you getting to read this duet for the first time, I’m so jealous. It is one of my top reads of the year. Hudson and Cullen will forever have my heart.

Tropes: MM, best friends to lovers, twin sister’s boyfriend, coming out, bi-awakening, stalking, mental health rep, ‘I saved you, you saved me’, hurt/comfort, trauma recovery, protective mc

Wow, Hudson and Cullen really fought for their relationship, and I am so proud of how much they grew throughout this book. Before they could truly be together, they needed to work on themselves and become better versions of who they were. Their growth felt realistic and earned, which made their relationship even more meaningful.

I will admit that I was a little frustrated as well angry that it took Hudson reaching such a dark place to finally realize how precious life is and how deeply his actions would affect the people who love him. That being said, I was so happy to see him find a therapist who truly listened to him, understood what he was going through, and helped him begin healing. Watching him slowly develop a healthier mindset was one of the most rewarding parts of the story.

It was also interesting that, once Hudson started healing, it became Cullen's turn to seek help. He had every reason to be angry and overwhelmed after almost losing his best friend—the love of his life. His emotions were completely understandable, but I appreciated that the story showed how lashing out wasn't the solution either.

One character who really got on my nerves was Cullen's sister. I understood her protectiveness of Hudson, but some of the things she said and did crossed a line. No matter how angry you are, there are things that should never be said, and I felt she should have been held more accountable for her actions.

The ending was beautiful, emotional, and hard-earned. The stalker reveal completely caught me off guard, but it made sense in hindsight. Sometimes the people closest to us can cause the most damage. My only wish is that we had gotten a glimpse of Hudson and Cullen's future together—maybe even a wedding scene. Still, it was a wonderful conclusion to their story, and I loved every minute of it.

I just finished reading Kenzie Ford’s “Save me at the River”, book two in her Crossing Bridges Duet, book one left us on a cliffhanger and book two picks up right where one left off. Hudson and Cullen have been best friends forever and now are head over heels in love with each other. However, it feels like life wants to keep both of them down so much so that Hudson makes a choice. Cullen is there that day and when he pulls Hudson out of the river it feels as if his heart is breaking in two. I thought my heart was going to break reading the opening sentences of book two feeling the pain and the fear that Cullen is feeling as he watches the other half of his whole world fight to stay. Hudson survives but those dark thoughts don’t magically go away he has to fight even harder to take back that power and be there with not only Cullen, but his family and friends. Just when things begin to turn around Cullen is now facing his inner demons and is fighting his own battle. Cullen is scared to take his eyes off Hudson for a second, he has so much anger and feels like he let Hudson down. What I loved about this book is Kenzie showed the hard work that both these two boys went through in order to come out on the other side. Was it fixed no but they were stronger for it? There is so much that happens to Cullen and Hudson in this book my heart broke for them but I wouldn’t change it for a second. I rooted for them, cried for them, and held my breath in those last few chapters and I loved every second of it. I love a story that draws me in and keeps me hooked from the opening words to the closing thank you. Thank you Kenzie for writing such a beautiful love story.

“I love you, and any world without you in it would be unbearable. I don’t know how to exist without you.”

Oh this book, these boys and their love!! The anguish and gut wrenching pain literally begins on the first page so prepare yourself as you dive into the conclusion of Cullen and Hudson's quest for a happily ever after! Kenzie takes you on one wild ride filled with tears, heartache, trauma, rebuilding, acceptance and so much love you will need tissues for this book!!

Cullen and Hudson's story picks up right where Meet Me At The River ends - the aftermath of Hudson's near fatal jump into the river.
What I love about this book specifically, is not only do you see more of Hudson's struggle with depression but how he begins to take the steps to heal his mind and recognize that he needs to not only help himself but ask for help as well.
And Cullen, my sweet sweet boy!! His struggle had me in tears. He tries so hard to be strong for Hudson but the PTSD from Hudson's attempt really hits him hard and he is so angry.
How these boys work together and separately to heal the trauma they have experienced is so beautifully written, Kenzie capture's each of their personalities and struggles perfectly that you as a reader can feel their sadness as well as their healing hearts. It is truly moving.
There are several other jaw dropping surprises, redemption arcs and heartwarming moments that I will leave to the readers to experience on their own.
This is one of the best series I have ever read and I will never stop recommending it.
As always, this book deals with some very heavy topics - please remember to check your triggers.

Ok let me start by saying I have been patiently waiting for this book since the cliff hanger of Meet Me at the River and it did not disappoint! Kenzie, you had me balling my eyes out on page one with the letter. It was heartbreaking reading what Cullen was going through, throughout this book. You could feel his emotions pouring off every page. Him thinking that everything that happened was his fault, that he couldn’t protect Hud, that he missed signs and somehow could have prevented Hudson from doing what he did. Seeing him become a different person in this book hurt, but I understand why. It was also heartbreaking reading the emotions from Hudson when he woke up and realized his plan didn’t work. It’s hard to write this without leaving any spoilers but Kenzie this book was everything! The way the boys leaned on each other, the forgiveness, the undying love they had for each other, and the growth they both showed was inspiring to read. I also loved the forgiveness between the family and friends. The plot twist at the end blew my mind! I never would have guessed. This duet is going to stay with me for a long time, it’s going on my comfort read list. Thank you Kenzie for giving me this opportunity, and thank you for writing such a compelling, hard to put down duet.

A quote that is so fitting!!!

“This bridge… this river—it’s kind of the same. Yeah, some terrible things happened here, but some of the best moments of our lives happened here too. I don’t want to give up on a place that’s been part of all of it.”

Holy shit is the first words that come to mind when it comes to my feelings of this book. Hudson and Cullen have both found a home in my heart, and I believe they will live there forever. These two boys have gone through hell and back, their love for each other never weakening, it only allowed them to love each other more.

There were a few times that I had to put the book down because I was crying and couldn’t see the page anymore. Then as I picked up and continue to read I was laughing. Kenzie does an amazing job of blending hurt and comfort together that makes it feel real. She shows Hudson and Cullen’s undying love for one another and shows just what lengths they both will go through for one another ( some of those decisions are good! And some are not) but at the end of this story I knew that that Hudson and Cullen are soulmates!

This duet is a book I will read again and again! It was the perfect ending for these boys! I cannot wait to read more from Kenzie!!

ARC review for Save Me by the River

Seemed like it took forever to get here, but I was so happy to dive back into Cullen & Hudson's story especially after the gut-wrenching cliffhanger the author left us in on the first book😢 If you haven't read the first book Meet Me by the River then definitely go do that first.

This book picks up right where the first book ended and the author already had my eyes all blurry in the first chapter so get your tissues ready.

In this book these two fight hard to conquer their demons & you'll get a different version of Cullen in this book compared to the first as he now has in own demons to fight.

These two picked up the pieces, worked on themselves separately & together and they got their HEA ❣️

I extremely disliked Hadley in the first book, but she grew on me a little bit 🤏🏻

Oh, and Hudson's stalker, I just knew who it was based on a brief interaction, but I'm not going to spoil that part for the readers.

As always check the TW, your mental health matters.

This book was everything and more !!! It’s not often I can’t stop thinking about a book , after I read it. From someone who has not suffered from mental health concerns , I felt so tied to these characters and their journey/struggles . The author does such an amazing job tying everything up . I was so excited to finally figure out who the stalker was and it was a great surprise . I enjoyed how Hudson’s sister realized her faults and ended up being such a strong sister at the end. I enjoy the friends to lovers trope, but this is so much more . These boys are soul mates who just get each other without even talking . It’s admirable how she has been able to write such a novel with such big feelings at this age(the characters ) . I re read the first book 3 times afterwards because it just stuck with me . I’ve already read this one twice . I am honored to have received an ARC and can’t wait for others to see how powerful this book is .

Save me at the river is the conclusion of Hudson and Cullen story and the perfect ending to an amazing duet and it couldn’t be more perfect I love everything about it.

The story picks up right after the end of Meet me at the river is the aftermath of what happens after Hudson’s decision and how big of an impact it made in each of the characters especially Cullen. It was an emotional journey towards healing, at times it was painful but it was also beautiful, I could feel how much love both Hudson and Cullen had for each other and by the end their HEA was hard fought and 100% earned. We also finally get the reveal of the stalker I was shocked by who it was i didn’t see it coming will have to go back and reread book one for any hits.
Overall it was an amazing conclusion of a beautiful duet. I will miss reading about them but i can’t wait for the upcoming stories of certain characters.

ARC REVIEW FOR Save Me At The River by Kenzie Ford

What can I say about this book so much. First off, Cullen and Hudson are my babies and have my whole heart.

This book starts off right where book 1 left off with Hudson jumping into the river. You see a very different Cullen than from book 1. Book 2 he is angry and scared.

This book is him and Hudson trying to pick up the pieces and move on after that tragic night. If you hated Hadley in book 1 (don't worry, I did too), she's better in this book. I almost liked her.

If you haven't read Meet Me At The River, go do that right now, then read Save Me at the River right after. I gave this book 5 well-deserved stars. This duet is my favorite of 2026 so far.

Save Me At The River By @authorkenzieford

🫧OUT NOW🫧

Honestly where to start with this book,
It’s the second book of the ‘Crossing Bridges Duet’
After the soul crushing first book I couldn’t wait to get my eyes and hands on this one, and when I say Kenzie did not disappoint, it kept me glued to the screen of my kindle, these two characters will forever be in my heart and soul and I’m a little sad it’s only a duet even though I am so happy their story came to a happy conclusion, Hud and Cull are some of the best written characters I’ve had the pleasure of reading and their story had me gripped from the first page, this book comes with twists and turns you never see coming and the character development is outstanding, when I say you need to read this book I mean it!
Hudson had my tearing up on nearly every page, his growth in this book was perfection and I couldn’t be happier for him, he speaks to me so much as a character.
Cullen deals with a lot in this story, growth, mourning, understanding and finally acceptance, where book one was harder on baby Hud, book two was definitely a battle for our man Cull.
Another group of people who need to be praised are their parents, they are always willing to fight for their children and they are the parents everyone should have.

Please please read this duet! It’s a must and have a box of tissues ready and waiting. Even with all the heartbreak and healing there is some brilliantly written spice too!
My 2026 must read!

After reading the first book, I was crying at work, knowing that I had to wait for this one to come out! Getting to read the rest of Cull and Hud’s story, I was crying, laughing and going through the emotions that they were going through as well. Having that twist in the book was a total side tackle that I didn’t know was going to happen. I am glad that Cull and Hud FINALLY got their happy ending.

Now, what about Archer, because that boy needs his HEA too…..

This book was ok it was a very anticipated read for me but the thing I didnt like was how they used sex instead of sharing what they were feeling in the moment but I understand they have both gone through a lot. besides that this book was very emotional for me and I’m glad they got their happy ending!💕

“Thank you for never giving up on me. I’ve spent so much of my life worried about being a burden that I inadvertently made myself one.”

5⭐️ 3.5🌶 4😭
Well Kenzie did it. She came out swinging on page 1 of Save Me at the River with even more obliterating emotional damage to top off that illegal cliffhanger from the first book. Literally gutted me of all my tears for the first 20 percent of the book.

The fallout that Cullen and Hudson have to navigate from everything that happened in Meet Me at the River is so heavy. Both of them are now dealing with their mental health. Hudson of course our sad baby boy is filled with fear, regret, rage and sadness. And Cullen, our sweet sweet golden retriever man is trying to hold it together for Hudson, but his own trauma having witnessed everything that went down is driving him insane. But with a lot of hard work and determination, the love these two have for each other pulls through.

The pacing of this story is absolutely perfect, the angst, the drama and the character development of not only Cullen and Hudson but also of many of the side characters were well placed for Kenzie's future stories. There's so many tears you'll have but also still so many tender and swoony moments between our MCs. And of course just that bit of suspense since the stalker is still on loose. 👀

All in all this was an absolutely beautiful conclusion to Hudson and Cullen's story and I couldn't be happier that we reached their happily ever after ❤️‍🩹

The course of true love never did run smooth, Hudson and Cullen’s love story continues but no matter how rocky the road gets these boys have each others back.
