I found my fate...a little too late.A guy walks into my bookstore, takes one sniff, and decides I’m his fated mate. Great meet-cute, right?
Except I’m not single. He’s not human. And according to him, even though I’m in perimenopause, I’m the only woman on the planet who can give him the pups he’s been dreaming of.
Now he wants a deal, one that involves doctors, a surrogacy contract, and an insemination arrangement I absolutely should not make, given the ring already on my finger.
Helping him become a father might be the kindest thing I ever do. It also might be the most complicated. Because falling for the wolfman is not in my plan…but fate is here to make a mess of my white-picket-fence life.
FATED LATE is a cozy monster romcom about midlife curveballs, undeniable chemistry, and one wildly inconvenient mate bond.
This was cute and sweet. I found Julia frustrating with how much of a willing doormat she was for most of her life, but I liked her by the end of the story.
I think I need a little time to sort myself out. Figure out what I want and not just what someone else wants.”
I loved reading this. I picked it because it bucks the set standard of girl meets monster. She's older, she already has kids and a dickish husband. All the real life complications of life. It makes a grounded, hearty, believable storyline.
I also loved that all the main side characters had depth to them...except for one thing. Her girls are her world but she actually doesn't tell them about leaving Richard or about Ian+the babies and I was like why are you harping on about protecting your girls, living in a shitty relationship and not wanting the same for your girls if they are these abstract kids?
The book loses a star because of all the tail wagging and drooling. Ian is basically described as a dog, having dog like traits and that wasn't really appealing to me. Like make him a monster but don't give him traits that when I read them I'm thinking of a dog doing zoomies or howling in excitement.
Also, look, realistically not everyone ups and leaves an abusive relationship in one clean sweep/the moment it starts happening...but by god didn't it take Julia such a long time to finally get pissed off and actually do something about her situation. And, in the end, baby girl wasn't really independent/by her self because main source of income energy just transferred to Ian.
I wonder what would have happened if they had gone before the fates?
So, enjoyed this and would definitely recommend for monster romance, but not standard character backstories.
Complicated, lovely little shifter-human romance in which the FMC faces up to a failing marriage while offering to be a surrogate for a wulver who cannot otherwise father offspring (messy, as well, but never engaging in adultery). It’s a convoluted route to a HEA, but it’s well worth the journey to get there. Fans of Sara Ivy Hill will not be disappointed.
I received an advance reader copy from the author, and I’m sharing my honest review.
She thought her best years were gone, he proved her wrong.
Julia thinks her life is settled, even if it feels small. A respectable marriage, grown daughters, a quiet job at a bookstore where she disappears between the shelves. Then a wolf walks in, takes one breath, and tells her she is his mate and his only chance at fatherhood. She should laugh. She should walk away. Instead, she listens.
Ian is not offering a fairytale. He is offering a contract. Doctors. Signatures. A clinical arrangement that should mean nothing more than biology. But every glance lingers too long, every touch burns hotter than it should, and the boundaries she clings to start to blur. He looks at her like she is powerful. Like she is wanted. Like her best years are still ahead of her.
As her body changes and the cracks in her marriage widen, Julia is forced to confront what she has tolerated for decades. Ian does not demand. He shows up. He waits. He builds space for her to choose him freely. And when everything finally breaks, it is not fate that saves them. It is the moment she decides she deserves more.
Julia begins emotionally starved and resigned, convinced her chance at deep intimacy is over, but she slowly reclaims her sexuality and her voice. Ian starts with instinct and certainty, then grows into a steady, emotionally attuned partner who proves his devotion through patience and restraint. What begins as a clinical arrangement turns into a high heat, deeply chosen bond built on respect, consent, and the courage to want more.
An ultra steamy, midlife, age gap, fated mates monster romance set in a small town where a protective hero and found family rise from emotional neglect. It’s about reinvention after resignation, reclaiming desire and bodily confidence, and discovering that it’s never too late to rebuild your life on your own terms.
The Elevator Pitch: When a lonely bookstore owner in a crumbling marriage is claimed as the fated mate of a wolf who wants children, a clinical arrangement meant to be simple ignites a connection neither of them can ignore. As desire collides with duty and instinct challenges everything she thought was settled, she is forced to confront what she has accepted and what she truly wants. It becomes a story of midlife awakening, fierce devotion, and the risky choice to build a new life when the old one no longer fits.
I’ll admit, the gorgeous cover art is what drew me in, but the story is what kept me hooked! As my first ever monster romance, I wasn't sure what to expect, but I ended up loving it way more than I anticipated. It’s a perfectly balanced read: a sweet, steady-build romance, well-written spicy scenes, and just the right amount of drama to keep things moving. A lovely, feel-good HEA!
3.5? Eh idk. Ian and Julia were just so meh. I need my characters to have some flaws and these 2 were just too perfect (besides Julia being such a doormat) I really hated that julia was married it kinda marred the romance for me. The whole Richard plot line was excessive.
I was so so so excited for this book, but it ended feeling somewhat unauthentic to me?
The MMC is literally perfect he has not one flaw and is deeply in love with her after one day.
And while I empathize with women in toxic relationships, the FMC was a naive, brainwashed doormat who has no backbone unless someone is telling her to have one, and even then it takes a long time.
All that being said, the sweet moments were sweet and it hit all my kink favorites. I also really enjoyed the diverse characters it gave it some fresh air (her neighbors were my favorite).
I still adore this author, and will continue to inhale her work…I guess it can’t hit 100% every single time, right?
ARC Review Sara Ivy Hill is one of my top favourite authors, she never misses and the real evidence of that is that when I got the opportunity for this arc I saw it was basically a story about everything I'd normally run screaming from and I absolutely loved it! I mean, a book where the major premise is pregnancy and surrogacy and they aren't even really together because she's already married? ew. So imagine my astonishment at just falling head over heels for what turned out to be the coziest, cutest, wholesome story with the most green flag, healthy, attentive and sweet relationship! 😍
Somehow, despite pregnancy being my biggest turnoff for a book, this story somehow worked. You root desperately for this sweet bookshop lady in her 40s whose been married for like 20 yrs and has 2 adult children and the red furred Wolfman who discovers too late she's his mate and they can't be together. So she agrees to give him the only thing of herself she can, she'll give him a litter of pups so he can be a father, but the process isn't the clinical procedure she's expecting and their feelings only become more involved after a night together. But she's determined not to cheat on her husband and I think that part of the story was handled very well, it never feels wrong or slimey, she tells her husband everything and he's fine with her being a surrogate as he doesn't love her anyway.
The story really revolves around books and the bookshop which makes it extra cute. It's also about the friendships between women and looking out for each other. And it's about found family and holding space for the one you love, especially when you can't have them all to yourself and have to wait for things to work out. It felt like a very nurturing, respecting kind of book. The pregnancy stuff is definitely there all the time but it really created more reasons for him to pamper and show his care for her than anything so it wasn't bad.
Another thing I really enjoyed about our girl Julia was her relatable body, it mentions her being insecure of her stomach rolls, her non-perky chest and stretch marks and she's scared he'll find her repulsive. But wolfman Ian thinks she's a curvy goddess and loves everything about her which is so inspiring, I hope one day I won't be repulsive either! 😂
I loved the sweetness and peacefulness of this book, highly recommend even if you don't like the baby stuff, it's done differently here and it's actually good, so give it a chance!
🔥 “You’re made for me.” ~~~ Julia is absolutely lovely! She’s so kind, nice, sweet and compassionate. And, even though she’s stuck in a loveless marriage and is very underappreciated by her (utterly awful) husband, she still tries her best to make things work, for the sake of her daughters. Even more, I loved that underneath her quiet appearance, is a fun woman with a sharp mind. Julia is an amazing woman and I loved her so, so much!
And then - there’s Ian! Everything about him is just perfect - he’s incredibly charming, caring, devoted, generous, thoughtful and fiercely protects what’s his. And I loved that, even though he was the last of his siblings without a fated mate, he didn’t give up hope of finding her. I really liked his optimism and determination. Ian is one utterly irresistible male and I couldn’t help but adore every single thing about him!
I absolutely loved everything that happened between Julia and Ian! The moment Ian sees Julia he knows she’s not only meant to be his, but also the only person who can give him what he craves most - a family and pups of his own. There’s just one small complication… Julia is already married… And yet, a deal is made.
I loved Julia and Ian together! Their chemistry was off-the-charts from the start and I savored every moment they spent in each other’s company. Ian completely won me over with his devotion, dedication and the way he stood by Julia’s side, no matter what she was going through. And the more Julia got to know Ian, the more she saw what an incredible male he was and found the courage to take her happiness into her own hands. Even more, the passionate moments they shared were smoking hot and I couldn’t get enough of all the naughty and knotty delight. Julia and Ian were absolutely perfect for one another - proof that it’s never too late to find true happiness and love.
In addition, I liked that the monster community has a Court of Fates. Even though they were not involved in Ian and Julia’s complicated situation, I’m looking forward to learning more about them in the next stories. And there’s more… I loved Ian’s family soooo much - all of them are such good people. And Heidi and Nic - those two ladies were the absolute best!
Overall, Fated Late is an emotional, fun, naughty and absolutely lovely start of the series and I loved every single page of it!
Julia had a Bachelor's degree in English and a Masters degree in Education... she watched her parents marriage end because of her father's gambling addiction... she's 45 years old...
And yet she was just so naive it was astounding
Like I understand not wanting to believe someone is bad, but yet she openly would admit that her husband didn't treat her well... had many affairs... gave her an STI... absent majority of the time....
And yet she never realized that once she stopped doing what he wanted and left him that he would be vicious? No matter how many times she was questioned about him being safe she would just say that he's emotionally abuse, as if emotional abuse isn't a step from physical??
She complained that if she left her husband that he wound be able to financially block her, which is one reason she never left before... but she had a job at the time and never thought to open up her own bank account that wasn't connected to him to put her paycheque into? At least that would've given her some financial freedom outside of him.
Honestly, she was so naive that it was cringey. Like she kept reiterating how she was "significantly older" than Ian only (10 years) and yet he was significantly more mature and adept towards the world than she was. I know you can argue that if he husband had financial control for 25 years then she just wouldn't know any better, but she also admitted that he was gone most of the time and gave her free range of the bank/credit cards even when they were solely in his name. She just decided to stay ignorant and blame it on being a stay at home mom.
I wasn't even through Chapter 1 before I knew I was going to love it and that it was going to be SO cute. When I finished the last page every expectation I had was exceeded. This was amazing. It was cute and sweet and funny and heartbreaking and lovely and ahh. It was such a treat to be back in one of Sara's worlds, enjoying the space carved out for a beautifully unconventional love story. The way she does found family just has a way of stitching up wounds you kind of forgot were bleeding in the first place. Highlighting the importance of friendship, of trusting your instincts, of believing people when they show you who they really are, of asking for help and accepting when it's freely given. Giving the spotlight to demographics not given nearly enough representation was so rewarding. We get an FMC that has already had kids, raised them, and has moved into the next phase of her life and an MMC that wants a family so bad and actively chooses to praise and dote and adore, even when he knows he shouldn't be. Because who doesn't want to be reminded that they're treasured? That they're wanted? Come on 😍 Julia was an amazing reminder that it's important to strive for happiness and love, especially when you've allowed yourself to be starved of it. Ian is the best example of a caring, adoring, truly loving partner, through all of life's ups and downs and messy beautiful bits. If he can't love all of you the way Ian loves Julia just go ahead and find one who can 💁
To be honest, I was a little nervous going into this one. The premise of a fated mate connection appearing when one of the MCs is already married can be a very tricky trope to navigate. I wasn’t sure if I would be able to get behind the romance given the circumstances, but I shouldn't have worried. It was done incredibly well.
The author does a great job of establishing just how toxic and stifling Julia's marriage has become. Her husband is truly awful; you feel the emotional weight of her situation, and you can’t help but root for her to find a way out of the control he casts over her life and to find a way to be a family with Ian. While the husband is the perfect villain, Ian is the opposite of that toxicity. He sees Julia for who she actually is as a person. He treats her with the care and gentleness she has been starved of for years.
What I loved most was her personal journey and growth. This isn't a story about a woman simply jumping from one man to another. She evolves and grows. When she eventually makes the brave decision to leave her husband for herself—to reclaim her own agency and worth—rather than doing it specifically for someone new, you can't help but be proud of her. When she is finally able to fully choose Ian, he isn't just a replacement husband; he is the partner who proves that love should build you up, not bring you down.
I received a free copy of this book from the author and am voluntarily leaving a review.
There were so many nuances to this book. For one it isn't a typical fated mates story, there are obstacles, but love is worth working for. The weaving in of what family bonds are through culture, the inclusivity...be it Wulver or Korean. Loving someone for who they truly are and not what you want them to be. I love that the Shifter community has a Court of Fates, it can help with complicated situations. So many pushed this as an option, but Ian always knew who his mate was and wanted her to come to her own decisions. Ian was delightful. His internal monologue of excitement paired with his calm, stoic replies in the beginning. To eventually not being able to contain his feelings and having them spill out physically through tail wags...and so much more. 🥰 Julia is someone you can relate to. She is real, selfless and hard on herself. With some support from her amazing friends and her Eomma she is able to have those hard conversations and see she isn't happy and deserves to have so much more. This was a tender book with cozy and steamy elements. I am excited to delve more into the Complicated Mates Series.
And you know your limits, so read the author's content warnings. I received a copy of this book from the author, and this is my honest review.
This was excellent. I was a little worried going into it because there's a lot to be handled here (she's already married? she's older and he wants children?), but I didn't need to be. Every plot point and emotion was addressed thoughtfully and realistically (I mean, realistically in context) in a way that was thorough and engaging and rewarding, and I'm so glad I read this book as soon as I got it (and for the sake of disclosure, I got this from participating in the author's Patreon).
The romance was kind of secondary to the practicalities here, but it worked with the premise. Julia was such a good encapsulation of a phase of life so many women go through, and Ian was sweet and careful and caring and so willing to meet her where she was and make things how she wanted them to be. I also think, in Ian's case, the author did a great job of depicting the interplay of different cultures here (wulver- and Korean-American), and I enjoyed how expressive Ian was.
Overall, a great book that hits all the right notes and brings something unique and interesting (and appreciated) to the genre.
Fated Late is a would’a been cozy if it weren’t for her horrible cheating husband, highly enjoyable wulver x human, reverse age-gap, later in life romance. What should have been a straight forward fated mate meet cute and they live happily ever after, turned into a slow surrogate mother, let’s be friends because it’s better than nothing, please don’t let him treat you that way—poorly, I will do anything to keep you safe, and on and on and on their journey to HEA moved along it’s battle weary path—in the end both knew: Fate lays your path as it is supposed to happen, when it is supposed to happen. Every previous day’s success, failure, pleasure, pain, nirvana, and heartache brought you to your life as it is today—making you exactly what fate intended you to be, exactly when fate intended you to achieve it, with the one(s) truly meant to be there. *** Recommended *** MMC: ✨Ian FMC: ✨Julia HEA/Cliffhanger: ✨indie Tropes: 👉 romance 👉wulver x human 👉fated mates 👉insta love 👉reverse age-gap 10 years 👉real piece of poo husband - fmc Triggers: 💥18+ 💥sex 💥profanity 💥violence 💥abuse 💥domestic, mental, physical Spice Level: ✨🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ ✨MF
I am so disappointed in myself for not reading this sooner. Not even sure where to begin. I was apprehensive. Was there even going to be hea or a possibility. Once you see how much of a Dick Richard is you'll know it. Twenty years of being in one sided marriage. Never knowing what true love feels like. Never knowing what a true relationship could be. Even her mother had terrible relationship with her father that ended messy. Ian just needed patience and I loved that for her. He gave her the time she needed and the space as well as respect. He didn't push her and she didn't do anything terribly unreasonable that we so often see. I enjoy a FMC that approaches things logically and not have a story drug out with a character waffling. There were plenty of important details which was also much appreciated and the spice I'm here for it. It wasn't like crazy amount nor was it a small amount. It was just right for the book. Ok well maybe no just right but I get it he didn't want to push her much to our dismay. Excited to see where she intends to take this series.
🐺 Cinnamon-roll wolfman MMC hero 💜 Plus size FMC over 40 🐺 Fated Mates 💜 Age gap 🐺 Breeding contract 💜 Knotting 🐺 Utter devotion + praise 💜 Food is their love language 🐺 #itscomplicated
Julia is stuck in a useless, loveless marriage with a cheating, manipulative man for the sake of her 2 collage age daughters.
She gets her first job after 18 or so years in a cute little bookshop and bumps into Ian. Ian is red headed wulver who wants a family more than anything and Julia happens to be the only woman that's able to do it.
The relationship between Julia and Ian was slow growing due to Julia's current 'issues' but she finally realises how bad things had become, with help from Ian and her best friends.
The inclusion of Korean-American culture was great. It was lovely to see so much included, from food, clothing to name choices. The shifters having a court of fates to decide hard to navigate relationships was a good thing to include. Ian deciding not to go that route, even though it was getting pushed onto him, goes to show what sort of male he is. He knew what was best for Julia.
Difficult topics to work around but very well executed.
This book definitely gives you all the feels from anger to cute grins and Ian is all the Cinnamon-rolls you could want.
This was a super sweet, cozy romance from Sara Ivy Hill! I was a little bit worried that the premise of a married woman meeting her fated mate late in life was going to be too angsty for me, but it was super well done. The conflict was mostly external to Julia and Ian's relationship.
And speaking of Julia and Ian's relationship - it was perfect. Ian, consent king, was so sweet the entire time, even when his feelings were complicated. And it was nice to see Julia come into her own confidence after her relationship with her deadbeat husband. It was also wonderful to read about an FMC over 35!
Ian's pack was a surprise standout to me - I would love to read more about their clan!
Overall, really enjoyed this read. It was a quick read for me, but the plot was well done and the relationships were fleshed out nicely. The spice was also top notch.
I can't express how much I loved this book! It's so romantic, even with the hurdles to be jumped and the baggage Julia is carrying. Although Ian and Julia are fated mates, it's a little late in their lives and Ian has waited forever for the happiness afforded by a mate and pups. Their experience definitely exemplifies the sentiment "better late than never". Ian's wulver family is the best, just so supportive and loving. Who wouldn't want to be a part of that family? And I love Julia's friends and family, and all the references to Korean culture. The character development and the world building are terrific, as is the writing. It has such a feel-good ending; it makes you believe there is actually some good in the world. Another triumph by Sara Ivy Hill! I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
The story starts with a wulver finding his human fated mate and instead of easing her into it he blurts it out after knowing she is married with kids. Poor FMC doesn’t know what to do.
A sweet cozy spicy book full of turmoil. The tropes and trigger warnings are accurate
Earth shattering kabloom of a plot twist. Knew he was no good, didn’t know he was downright ugly on the inside. - not MMC - but gods darn did this shake the plot up.
Also the offer for cat bodyguards was absolutely adorable.
Kay points in no particular order: - late life preg - Triplets - shifters and bipedal animal humanoids - Surrogacy - lgtbtia2s + families - bi-racial families - interspecies couples - birth - fated mates - FMC OVER 40 - emotional ab -* use - - Spicy 4/5
So flippin’ adorable! Sweet, spicy, unique, wonderful!
Perfect palette cleanser. Left me with the warm and fuzzies. Looking for a read with a super sweet cinnamon roll alpha? Look no further! This plot felt like a refreshingly unique take of the monster Romantasy and I am absolutely here for it. I love the unique challenges the MMCs face, the family and friend dynamics, and the FMCs growth over the course of the book.
I highly recommend this book. Engaging, sweet, spicy, heartwarming, great writing (a few grammatical errors but nothing egregious).
Our MMCS definitely have some complicated circumstances to navigate, but it’s a delightful ride getting there and such a heartwarming HEA once they get there.
This certainly was an out there book, but I loved it. Not just the romantic side of it but all the other topics that it touched on. The emotional elements were approached with care and compassion. The revelations throughout the story was an eye opener.
Julia and Ian's relationship was beautiful to witness. The strong support of her friends was the icing on the cake. This was a page turner from the very beginning and a definite must read.
I applaud anyone who offers to be a surrogate. It certainly is a gift to be selfless.
This was a fab series opener and it's really quite the complicated romance for Ian and Julia. She's his fated mate but she's already married. Yikes! He comes up with a plan for her to surrogate for him, as she's the only one he can have pups with, and her kindness to him helps her face her failing marriage. There's no cheating in this read, just to FYI you. However, there is a wonderful, messy, emotional and spicy romance that may take a meandering path to an HEA but it's definitely worth the reading ride. So fun and I can't wait for the next book :D
Spicy, male female, 1st person dual point of view, contemporary, paranormal romance. This plot is messy! It's like a super laid back telenovella (very cozy read imo) with *spoiler alert* a cheating husband and a wulver who can't have kids with anyone but our TOO devoted female main character. Tons of fun to read. As a half Korean woman I appreciated the representation (kudos to using gimbap not kimbap lol). Love how many different monsters are in this community! A tiny bit of stress for flavor, but overwhelmingly cozy, perfect length read.
I LOVED THIS BOOK. It's everything a romance reader wants. He's down bad. She thinks her best years are behind her, and he's convinced they're yet to come. It's complicated, sorta, but not really—she's been iced out in her relationship since forever and deserves to be seen and wanted. This is just a really special book.
Anyway. I ate this up in one day, cover to cover like Thanksgiving dinner. Spice early on, plenty of pining, the exact perfect moment hitting right when you want it.
This was so stinkin' cute! The plot was interesting, characters were multifaceted, Ian was such a cinnamon roll, and the inclusion of Korean-American culture was a wonderful addition to the read. The spice felt secondary to the romance and other plot points, which worked for me in this book. Even the side characters were engaging.
Big thank you to the author for the advanced copy of this book. This is my honest review.
This book ticked all the boxes for me! I absolutely ate through it and didn’t want to put it down!
I’m such a sucker for a forbidden romance, So this one stole me from the start! Ian was everything Julia needed to heal and rebuild her life. One that she didn’t realize was so 💩 until he showed up. Then he won my heart over too 🫠😍🥵 ahhh, this book was exactly what my little heart needed! 🥰
