I went into Cold Moon Rising expecting “shocking twists” based on the marketing, which turned out to be false advertising but honestly, the lack of twists wasn’t my issue. My problem was that the story rarely let me emotionally experience what was happening.
This is much more of a procedural crime story. The plot itself is cohesive, and all the moving parts eventually connect in a way that makes sense. Where the book lost me was in the emotional execution. The characters overall felt flat and I just didn’t care about anyone because I hardly got to know them.
Also, so many major moments are told to the reader instead of truly shown. Characters are kidnapped, betrayed, shot, grieving, terrified, or dying, yet the emotional aftermath often gets skipped over or summarized in just a few lines before the story moves on to the next conversation, meal, interview, or logistics update.
Ironically, some of the strongest emotional beats arrived very late in the story, particularly involving Ray and Nick. Those final sections had more humanity and emotional weight than much of the earlier book combined, and I honestly wish that depth had been woven throughout the novel instead of saved for the ending.
Overall, this wasn’t a bad book. The plot was coherent and the pacing moved steadily. But for me, thrillers live or die based on emotional immersion, and this one kept me watching the story from a distance instead of pulling me into it. 3 stars.

This book felt very much like and episode of Law & Order without the courtroom drama. I enjoyed it, the pacing was pretty good. I will say that for me, the ending was a little anti-climactic. It had the action, but I felt like it was missing something. Not sure what, but it just wasn't quite there for me. Overall an enjoyable read though!

Fantastic Read!!!
This was an awesome title! I won this one on the Goodreads Giveaway! The direction this book took, especially towards the end, was surprising! I am wondering if there's a plan for a series at some point with the detectives in this one. I will definitely recommend this title to others!

Compelling!
This book held me spellbound throughout. Excellent read, surprise ending, it never got bogged down or lost focus. Look forward to reading more by Sledge.

I enjoyed reading Cold Moon Rising. It was a quick read with a surprising ending. The story reads like you are watching a movie, and that last chapter was intense. It will have you on the edge of your seat.
