Attention, please! I’m officially announcing one of my favorite thrillers of the year—scratch that—one of my top ten reads of 2026. And yes, I’m screaming this at the top of my lungs: this book is absolutely FANTASTIC!

I’ve always loved Liz Nugent’s brilliantly twisted storytelling and her razor-sharp, deeply layered character work. She has an unmatched talent for creating perfectly flawed, often morally ambiguous characters—even those with sociopathic or psychopathic tendencies—and somehow making you empathize with them… or at the very least, question your own moral compass. The situations she places them in—or the chaos they create through their own impulses—force you into uncomfortable, thought-provoking territory.

This might be one of her finest works yet.

The story unfolds through multiple points of view, primarily focusing on Ruby and her sister Erin, whose relationship is as complex as it is fractured—filled with love, resentment, jealousy, and years of emotional distance. In the final act, additional perspectives from Milo, Maureen, and Lucy deepen the narrative, transforming them from peripheral figures into fully realized voices that add weight and dimension to the story.

It’s incredibly difficult to discuss the plot without spoiling anything—but I’ll try to behave (or at least type responsibly!).

At its core, this is the story of two estranged sisters shaped by a tragedy that occurred when Ruby was sixteen and Erin was eighteen. In the aftermath, Ruby relocates to Ireland with their mother, leaving behind her husband—unable to convince him to abandon his prestigious life—which ultimately leads to the collapse of her marriage. Meanwhile, Erin stays behind with their father, processing the trauma in her own way, building walls so high she never truly trusts anyone again.

As years pass, both sisters spiral down very different paths—Ruby battling inner demons that push her toward self-destruction, Erin hardening into someone shaped by control and distrust. Around them, lives unravel: deaths occur, prison sentences are served, threats emerge. And yet, life goes on. The emotional distance between the sisters grows wider, their resentment deeper—until revelations begin to surface, forcing them to confront truths that could shatter everything they thought they knew.

Every character in this story carries their own burden, their own penance. One wrong decision triggers another, creating a relentless domino effect that ripples through multiple lives, leaving devastation in its wake.

This isn’t a book where you “like” every character—and that’s the point. You don’t need to love them to be completely invested. In fact, you may find yourself conflicted, frustrated, even disturbed—yet secretly hoping for redemption, for second chances, for even a sliver of grace. There is one character you’ll want to protect at all costs… but discovering who that is is part of the journey.

This story tackles heavy themes—redemption, addiction, greed, trauma, trust, survival, and the long shadow of resentment—without ever softening the edges. Nothing is sugarcoated. The tension is constant, the mystery gripping, and just when you think you understand where it’s going… another revelation hits, sending everything spiraling again.

By the final third, the intensity skyrockets. The tension becomes almost unbearable—you’re on the edge of your seat, heart racing, unable to stop, barely resisting the urge to scream as everything unravels in the most shocking way.

Overall: this is a masterclass in character study, with impeccable characterization and a gripping, intricately layered plot that drops you right into the moral chaos and forces you to ask: what would I do in their place? It’s dark, smart, unsettling, and completely addictive.

Words honestly aren’t enough to express how much I loved this book—but I’m doing everything I can to make sure it lands on your radar. Do not miss this, especially if you’re a fan of thrillers, drama, and powerful women-centered stories.

A million thanks to NetGalley and Gallery Books for providing me with a digital copy in exchange for my honest review.

I loved it. I loved it. I LOVED it.

As the kids say… EEEEEEYYYYYUUUUUCCCKKKK

The Truth About Ruby Cooper is a dark character driven psychological novel following the chaotic life of Ruby Cooper, who, after a traumatic, life-altering incident at age 16 in Boston, moves to Dublin, Ireland, with her mother. The story is told in multiple viewpoints—including her sister Erin and daughter Lucy. The story explores addiction, trauma, and lies over 25 years.

Let me just keep this one sweet and short, because I don’t even want to give this sociopath fictional character any of my precious time. LOL.

TRIGGERED is what this book had me. Ms Nugent has a way of writing that will make your skin crawl. Thee absolute loathe I have for this b!tch Ruby is unmatched. She must go into my top 5 most hated fictional characters.

Trigger warning is a MUST before you pick this one. This psychological thriller will mess with your psyche because the sheer audacity of this individual will have you wanting to dash your book across the room.

I was locked in, I was disgusted, I couldn’t put this book down. Nugent has a very addictive writing style that makes you just want to read ‘one more chapter’ .

This book won’t be for everybody… damn it shouldn’t have been for me but I just couldn’t turn away!

4.5 ⭐

4.5 rounded up
Sisters Erin and Ruby Cooper live a comfortable life in Boston where their father is both a successful pastor and financier. The sisters tell their versions of the story of Southie Milo Kelly from South Boston. At age 16 on the 15th September 1999 there’s an incident which changes everything. After this their Irish mother Maureen, takes Ruby to Dublin to her mother whilst Erin stays in Boston with her father. Two broken girls, a family rent asunder, lives destroyed. The novel follows the family over 25 years examining the ramifications and the trail of destruction.

I wondered how Liz Nugent would follow up on the hugely successful Strange Sally Diamond and it’s safe to say she’s got another best seller on her hands. This is quite a departure from her other novels as she’s trying something new which she explains in the introduction. What she’s achieved in this format has all the ingredients of a compelling psychological thriller. At times the plot and storytelling is very raw, emotional and utterly gripping with multiple shocks along the way. Some aspects of the plot almost have me questioning what I’ve just read as I can’t quite believe my eyes!

The characters are all very well drawn and my sympathies flip-flop all over the place as does my condemnation. The author has created quite something in Ruby Cooper and I don’t want to say too much about her personality traits for fear of spoiling things for future readers and so I’ll settle for saying that she’s fascinating.

I think the first half has more sock in the jaw moments and sharp inhales of breath as the second half examines the long-term impact on the central characters of Ruby and Erin and those around them. However, that’s not to say it’s not engrossing reading and there are still plenty of chills, taut tension and episodes of shocking behaviour. It builds to what can only be described as an inevitable end with Ruby having the final word. Or is it?

Overall, it’s beautifully written and a dark dramatic look at what human emotions can lead to and how they dictate future behaviours.

With thanks to NetGalley and especially to Penguin General UK for the much appreciated early copy in return for an honest review.

This is a dark, intense story that follows Ruby’s life after a shocking event when she is sixteen. Growing up in a strict religious family in Boston, one moment changes everything and splits her family apart. Ruby moves to Dublin with her mother while her sister Erin stays behind, and the story follows them over many years, showing how that one incident affects everyone involved. It’s told from different points of view, which helps build a full picture of the damage, secrets, and lies that unfold over time.

This book is gripping but also very uncomfortable to read at times. Ruby is not a likeable character, in fact, she can be frustrating, selfish, and even disturbing, but that’s what makes the story so powerful. Liz does a great job of creating complex characters and showing how trauma and bad choices can shape a person. There are moments where you might feel sympathy for Ruby, but just as quickly, she does something that makes you question everything again. The writing style is addictive, making it hard to stop reading even when the story gets heavy.

This book is not an easy or light read, and it definitely needs trigger warnings because of the difficult topics it covers. It can feel a bit long in places, and some parts may test your patience, especially if you don’t enjoy frustrating characters. But despite that, it’s a powerful and memorable story that stays with you. I found myself both hooked and horrified, and even though I didn’t love every part, it’s the kind of book that really makes you think and feel long after finishing it.

Wow! You just couldn't make this stuff up............Well actually, Liz Nugent did and what a page turner this novel turns out to be.

A psychological thriller that is dark, disturbing, wicked and unputdownable. Just what we have come to expect from Liz Nugent. She is not afraid to take on difficult subjects and characters and trust me Ruby Cooper is a character that is difficult to forget. This story had me exclaiming out loud on more than one occasion and the less said here the better.

The story moves between Boston and Dublin. Ruby Cooper and her sister Erin grow up in a very close religious family. When Ruby is sixteen, the unthinkable happens and her and her family must deal with the consequences. The novel spans decades and is a twisty rollercoaster of a ride that certainly doesn't disappoint the reader.
I didn't want this novel to end and was pacing my reading time, there is lots to discuss in this book and I think book groups are going to enjoy the discussion on this one.
This book is due for release in Spring 2026, and I don't want to give anything away as I know many readers are looking forward to this novel hitting the shelves.

My thanks to Liz and NetGalley for the opportunity to read an advance copy of The Truth About Ruby Cooper and I have no doubt I'll be re-reading it for book club come spring 2026.

No one does darkness like Nugent, and this was maybe one of the best examples of this. Ruby was really a character that I struggled with, and I also struggled with that I had a hard time feeling empathy towards her. But she also had some glimmers of guilt and love, but such an effective denial system that always chose so very badly. I liked how all the characters had very distinctive personalities, that weren’t black or white. To write so convincingly, is impressive. I had so many complex emotion while reading: sorrow, frustration and disgust. There was some hope in there, but it was hard to let that blossom due to the tainted backstory and selfish choices.

EDIT: it’s now been some days since reading this and I just had to add how it has affected my life. Being social now I find myself wondering; Am I really listening now for their sake or mine? This has totally gotten under my skin!!

Liz Nugent is a genius and I will read anything she writes. The Truth About Ruby Cooper is not an easy book to read as it tackles some really difficult issues and the author is not afraid to go there. In saying that, it is compelling, it is addictive and it is brilliant. An absolute must read and easy 5 stars.

I had some very extreme emotions reading this book I must say. I was sad, I was shocked, I was so very angry and appalled at times. Ruby is not a nice person and her actions are hard to understand or sympathise with. It all starts with “the incident “ and carries on throughout this story. There is no care for how her actions will impact those that she loves, changing all of their lives forever.

And look at that cover! Stunning 💜

Thank you so much to Penguin UK Books for my advanced copy to read. I will be singing its praises to anyone who will listen. Publishes on March 12th.

" I love her, but she doesn't make it easy.".. the words of Ruby's father to her mother.

To enter the world of Ruby Cooper and the subsequent and consequential actions of one moment at the age of sixteen is a hard-hitting emotional and deeply unsettling read.

Many readers will have got to know the work of Liz Nugent through the phenomenal Strange Sally Diamond; this new story again takes readers through a multitude of emotions and moral questions.

Ruby and her sister Erin live in what would appear to be an idyllic childhood and life but living in the shadow of expectations and demands can lead to unexpected actions- and so during her mid teens one incident and decision impact upon Ruby, her family and those closely connected. The outcomes ripple out for decades ahead. To say much more about the plot would certainly spoil the read

This is a story of deep psychological trauma and the impact of a terrible event. This is not a comfortable read and may will divide readers - it will raise questions about parenting, sibling rivalry and choices.

To say anymore in a review would further persuade or even dissuade people to read this challenging novel. One point that has to be made is that this novel explores the impact of addiction and for many who have experienced the repercussions of this then this could be /will be a tough read.

Gripping, horrifying and shocking- and a book that was hard to put down even in its darkest moments.

4.5 out of 5 due to certain unsettling content.

Did I just buy Liz Nugent's book from the UK because I couldn't wait until its September US launch?

Yes.

Liz Nugent is an auto-read author for me and when I saw that she has a new book out this year called THE TRUTH ABOUT RUBY COOPER, I knew that I needed to stop everything and read it! Liz Nugent is the queen of dark twisted characters, filling you with thrills, suspense, and sinister people. This book follows a similar makeup to Little Cruelties where you have a family and you aren't sure if any of them are actually good people. Go into this book without reading much of the synopsis, but I will leave you with this:

A family is shaken after something happens to one of their daughters and it affects not just their family, but many others over a period of time. The ripple effect of one person's actions can truly wreak havoc; you just don't know who is causing it!

This one is dark and gripping, with the perfect amount of push and pull from our characters, giving just little nuggets while you go along on their journey. I was hooked and hypnotized and was fully immersed in everyone's journeys. If you like dark and messed up family sagas, THE TRUTH ABOUT RUBY COOPER will be the perfect book for you. Readers of Lisa Jewell must prioritize this one! STARS: 5, PUB: out in the US 9/1

AUTHOR RANKINGS:
1. Strange Sally Diamond
2. The Truth About Ruby Cooper
3. Little Cruelties
4. Lying in Wait

Now, should I pick up Unraveling Oliver and Skin Deep so I am fully immersed into Liz Nugent's novels?!

Ruby Cooper and her sister Erin, are living in Boston with their parents. A wonderful life, as her dad is a pastor and her mum is a doting housewife. An incident happens to Ruby, at the age of 16, between the walls of the home. A tragedy that sets the trajectory of the rest of their lives for 20 years in between Ireland and Boston.

Ruby Cooper is unhinged. Narcissistic. She will stoop to any level that she can to get what she wants and consequences be damned. The author takes you deep into the physiological effects of her lies and falsehoods; and she never learns. Then karma comes to play and the light comes through the darkness.

I appreciated how deep the author takes us into the mind of Ruby. As a parent, how far would you go to protect your children? Would you put your marriage before your child? It begs the reader to ask the question if perhaps some people are born rotten. Rotten to the core. Sadly, we all know someone like this and we witness the effects..

This read was compulsive and thankful I received it From Britain; before it published here in Canada.
I loved Strange Sally Diamond, but this book was next level and therefore has earned a 5 star rating from me.

Another @scaredstraightreads AKA Dennis made me do it! I’ve read a few of @liznugentwriter ‘s books and knew that I had to have it after seeing his review.

Just when I thought @johnmarrs.author was the king of the most ruthless characters, Liz Nugent brings you Ruby. She truly is one of the most despicable characters in literature to date.

Imagine one single lie is told when you’re sixteen-years-old. ONE. It’s one of the worst lies you could ever tell. Over decades, it destroys your life and every single person that is dear to you. You leave death and misery in your wake. You begin to lose sight of the truth and everyone you THINK you love.

This book made my blood boil! Ruby is the ultimate trainwreck that I couldn’t look away from. Couldn’t stop and only got a couple hours of sleep the nights I read it. It is a slow burn that affects a family over decades of time, so get ready.

Liz, I also want to thank you personally for the way you represented Alcoholics Anonymous. Some writers get this wrong and you showed the true miracles of the program. You also did a phenomenal job with what happens when you stop working the program. Thank you for that because it’s so true, especially for someone like me.

All my little disturbed readers NEED to read this! You must add it to your TBR now and pre-order your copy. Available in the UK now and available in the US September 1st this year through @gallerybooks .

I’m not even kidding when I say I haven’t moved in six hours, in which time I both started and finished this book. If you’re looking for a compelling, powerful, one-sitting read definitely add this one to your lists but WARNING: it will absolutely consume you… so maybe wait until you have zero plans and all the time to dedicate to reading this in it’s entirety.

I appreciate the fact that in the proof copy I received was a note from Liz Nugent herself telling me beforehand that at some point whilst reading this book, I might feel the urge to hurl it across the room - this couldn’t have been more true. However, I wasn’t expecting to also need to take time-outs after every other chapter to control both my anger and my breathing. Liz also messaged me on instagram to inform me that it’s a much different book to SSD so my advice is: please don’t go into this expecting it to be similar to that. It’s such a unique book written from a very different POV, but honestly blew my mind. It’s raw and gut-wrenching, featuring themes of grief, trauma and really dives deep into a tough subject matter. The ending to part one left me utterly speechless.

I found it impossible to put down and it’s been a long time since I devoured a book over 350 pages in literally one sitting. I’m so impressed by this author and she definitely deserves to be on everyone’s radar!!!!!! I know this book is going to be an absolute hit!!!! 5 stars!!!!!

This was a highly anticipated read! It was worth the wait.

Liz Nugent explores childhood trauma and encourages us not to judge Ruby Cooper, but to put the puzzle pieces together to understand why she behaves the way she does. I was captivated by this story, the trajectory Ruby’s life took and the trail of chaos left behind. Nugent shows us the damage of deferred grief, the far-reaching effects of manipulation, and the idea that it’s never too late to do the right thing.

I can’t stop thinking about Milo and Ruby. I may not condone her actions, but her story has had a big impact on me the last few days.

Nugent left me with a ‘what if’ to consider, a twisty plot that I didn’t see coming, characters that I wanted to reach out and hug, and a flashing light hazard that will influence many decisions I’ll make in the days to come.

This will no doubt hit the best seller list quickly and hang out there for most of the summer. Avail yourself of triggers.

I was gifted this copy and was under no obligation to provide a review.

The Queen of the Opening Line has done it again!

This is a perfect example of how to nail the psychological thriller, keep the reader utterly gripped and throw in several WTF and OMG moments that literally left me open mouthed with shock.

As a huge fan of Liz Nugent and having read all her books, I was delighted to get an early ARC copy of The Truth About Ruby Cooper. I was so excited I didn’t even read the blurb, so went in completely oblivious to what this story was about and if you need further proof of how much I loved it, I didn’t put it down and devoured it in a day, only stopping halfway to message Liz to say WOW.

I’m not going to spoil anything for you, but I will say it’s about a family, a shocking and awful incident and the cataclysmic and devastating effects it has on everyone from that moment on.

It’s raw and beautiful, brutal and heartbreaking laying bare some of the truths about addiction, recovery and the effect our actions have on those we love.

I am deeply uncomfortable and conflicted.
What happens when the younger sister accuses the older sister’s beloved boyfriend of rape?

It takes guts to write something like this. I don’t know how to feel. On one hand, I always feel icky about sensationalising traumatic incidents. I especially felt uncomfortable that Nugent gives us a manipulative character who ‘Cries Wolf’ out of petty jealousy.

As acknowledged in the book, it’s a dangerous game when a story has a false accusation of rape when it is already so hard for women to be heard and it comes down to victim blaming or believing.

We follow these two sisters through decades after the fallout.
Ruby, the youngest, who moves to Ireland and falls down the holes of drink and drugs.
Erin, the eldest, suffering from guilt and mistrust after seemingly being betrayed by her heat, head, and boyfriend.

All of this against a backdrop of a religious family and community. I have to say I appreciated how religion wasn’t villainised as is often the case.

Being in Ruby’s head is dark. She is cold and calculating utterly self-serving. I could write an essay on this, but you should read and follow her life and choices to find out by yourself.

I still feel uneasy about the whole story and whether we should take a message from it. However, I cannot deny this is one that will linger. I could not stop reading it.

ARC for review. To be published September 1, 2026.

4 stars

From the writer of STRANGE SALLY DIAMOND, which I enjoyed, comes this tale of two very different sisters, told from both their POVs over a fair number of years. It begins in 1999. A family with two teenage daughters lives in Boston, the father is a pastor and investor, the mother an Irish immigrant and housewife. Eighteen year old Erin is in love with her boyfriend, Milo, is an aspiring writer and hopes to attend Harvard. Ruby is sixteen and feels inferior to her older sister in nearly every way.

One day, through one action, the lives of everyone in the family, and Milo, change forever. The book examines what happens, why and how the fallout impacts all their lives for years to come.

This was a good story. Nugent doesn’t disappoint and as with her last book the primary characters are well drawn, especially Ruby. I never got bored with this and those who enjoy family drama will probably like it.

I have really mixed feelings about this one, I honestly don’t even know if I liked it or not?🤔 It definitely did what it set out to do though, because from maybe around the 30% mark I started to feel really uneasy reading it, and that feeling just kept building the whole way through. Not because of the writing, the writing itself is great, but because of the story. It’s very dark and uncomfortable at times, and there were moments where it genuinely made me feel a little bit sick.

The story follows Ruby Cooper, who basically tells a whole lot of lies that take a toll on not only her life but those who surround her.

My biggest issue was that nothing really surprised me. I could see pretty much every twist coming a mile away, which took away some of the impact for me. I kept waiting for a moment where my jaw would drop but it never happened.

So yeah, I’m very torn on this one. It’s well written and it absolutely made me feel something, but I just wish it had shocked me a little more😅

Wrong marketing - this book is not a thriller or a mystery. Yes, the cover is similar to Strange Sally Diamond, but it is nothing like it. In that regard I was disappointed, because I have expected a suspenseful story with weird characters. If I had known, what this book is about, I wouldn’t pick it up.

Saying that, if we erase the expectations and read the book as it is, I think it will have the appealing of a wide audience. This is a family story with secrets that bring devastated consequences to everyone that is involved. Please look up trigger warnings for this book (alcoholism, sexual assault, violence etc.).

With thanks to NetGalley and Penguin General UK for the early digital copy in return for an honest review.

It starts with a lie.
Awkward 16 year old Ruby has always been jealous of her older sister Erin, her looks, popularity, brighter engaging personality Ruby feels invisible when Erin is around.

The sisters come from a privileged background - their parents are happily married, wealthy. They have a stable home, living in Boston. Ruby whose intense jealously and lies cause devastating long term consequences for everyone over the span of 2 decades. The book shifts between Boston and Ireland we bear witness to the unravelling of the family dynamic. I loved the setting shift between the two environments the cultural differences and the challenges they bought to the story.

I loved the deep dive character study of Ruby Cooper. The deception, manipulation, the need to have the control. Liz Nugent doesn't hold back in taking her characters to dark places. Ruby is clearly a very unlikable character, we are not meant to like or sympathise with her.

After reading this book and sitting with it for a week, Ive changed my mind. I loved Ruby as a character, she is flawed, complicated a masterful manipulator but I also had sympathy for her in her inability to see all those impacted by her behaviour... I wont say anymore. That ending is pure GOLD!

Its safe to say this is a standout novel, I highly recommend it and this book will be in my top 10 reads for 2026.

3.5* ... I was so hyped for this book since Liz Nugent is a "buy without reading the blurb" author for me, but honestly? It was just okay. I went in expecting that signature skin-crawling darkness she's famous for, but this was uncharacteristically tame. It was more like a slow burn family drama than the gritty, psychological read I wanted. ... And the biggest bummer was that the "shocks" weren't really shocking. The plot followed such a straight line that the big reveals felt more like inevitable conclusions rather than the "wait, what?!" moments Nugent usually delivers. Without those unpredictable turns, the middle really did start to drag.

So, if you're looking for this author's signature darkness, you won't find much of it here. The character of Ruby Cooper is predictably complex and "Nugent-level" unlikable, but the plot is more of a quiet unraveling of trauma rather than a surprising mystery. ... It was an okay story, but as a fan of the author's grittier stuff, it in no way had that "holy crap" factor. ... Read it if you're in the mood for a well-written character study, or a deep-dive domestic drama (just lower your "thriller" expectations).

It will be hard to tell you what I think about this book without spoilers. It's a long slow burn book about rape and consequences that is controversial at its core. The premise, the whole point of the book, relies on a completely construed and unlikely scenario that I found infuriating and damaging. I do not really think that the world needs books with this angle on rape, no matter how the author tries to mitigate the take later in the book.

So women, raise a hand. How many of you have a friend that has been sexually assaulted or harassed, if not full out rape? Yes, that would be all of you. Many of you will have been sexually harassed yourselves. I certainly have been, by men with more power than myself.

How many of you know personally of any man who faced consequences for his transgressions?
My guess, none.

NONE.

Which is why I hate the basic theme of this book.

Other than that, it's atypical in its slow pace and for how many years it covers, which is not common for the psychological thriller genre.

Meh. Think my expectations were set too high. Certainly not a thriller/mystery. Not my favourite by this author.

Another fantastic and riveting story from Liz Nugent.

The story of 16 year old Ruby and her older sister Erin who live with their religious parents in Boston. When an incident occurs between Ruby and Erin’s boyfriend it sets in motion a series of events that rips their family apart and Ruby and her mother move to Dublin leaving Erin and their father behind.

Dark distrurbing, possibly a little controversial but Nugent attacks this head on and again somehow ropes you in to caring for some pretty unsavoury and flawed characters. You will find yourself equally repulsed and empathetic throughout as you spend half a life time with these characters.

Another tour de force from Nugent. Storytelling of the highest calibre. Original, dark, sad and at times funny, I just loved this one.

Many thanks to the publisher for the ARC through Netgalley.

2.5 stars, rounded up.

I went into this one expecting something dark and character-driven, and it definitely delivers on that, but it didn’t fully work for me.

Ruby Cooper's life has been shaped by a shocking incident involving her sister’s boyfriend - one that fractures her family and sends their lives in very different directions between Boston and Dublin. Over the next twenty-five years, the fallout from that moment ripples through their relationships, forcing long-buried secrets and painful truths to the surface.

Nugent’s writing style is very pared back here: short, blunt, almost staccato sentences that mirror the characters thoughts. While I can see what she was aiming for, I found it too stripped down to fully connect with the characters. It kept me at a distance when I wanted more emotional depth.

There’s no denying the concept is gripping. I felt uneasy for most of it, and there’s a definite “can’t look away” quality. But, at times, the trauma felt heightened for shock value rather than insight, and the story became weighed down by one bad decision after another. Instead of building tension, the pace slowed for me about a quarter of the way in, and it became a bit of a slog to get through. I also kept waiting for a deeper exploration of themes like religion, generational trauma, and communal silence - threads that were there, but never fully developed in my opinion.

I am a big fan of many of Nugent's novels - Unravelling Oliver and Skin Deep especially - and I have no doubt this will be a really popular book. If you’re drawn to dark, disturbing reads with deeply flawed characters, this will absolutely work for you. It’s bold, probing, and definitely memorable. It would make a great book club read and spark lots of discussion.

⚠️ : sexual assault, addiction, trauma

The way Liz Nugent writes her characters is literally like no other 😮‍💨

This story is DARK so if you’re easily triggered & don’t like touchy subjects I’d really advise you to check trigger warnings before reading it!

But once again although it’s a touchy subject I feel like Liz Nugent could be the one to write a story about it and do it right which in my humble opinion she did just that!

4.25/5

The story follows Ruby Cooper and the aftermath for her and her family following an assault by her sister's boyfriend.

Liz Nugent had a tough act to follow after Strange Sally Diamond, and she nailed it!
This was a slow-burn book, but it was a slow burn in the best possible way. It’s the kind of story you want to take your time with—really sink your teeth into—to get to know the characters.

It was dark; it was bleak. The characters were dreadful but so interesting to read about. The book explores lots of triggering scenarios, so it’s definitely not for everyone, but I thought it was brilliant!
