Diving into this sweet little book feels disorienting at first. You’re trying on someone else’s brain and walking through middle school- which is chaos anyways- now seeing it through the perspective of a neurodivergent imaginative young man in eighth grade. For middle schoolers it’s a practice in being seen, and being able to laugh and cry out of sheer empathy and feel really deeply all the things adults might minimize. For adults it’s a time travelling book, you’re hormonal and creative and curious and you can see your crush and feel isolation and then connection, you’re living it and that’s a powerful thing. Likened to The Little Prince, we’re reminded to never forget, to honour what’s beneath, to reserve judgement and to seek wonder in every day life. Every time I read it I get a new perspective and a deeply look at life.
