The devil's right-hand woman must convince her long-lost husband to renounce their vows so she can wed a prince from Hell.
Effie MacLeod is no stranger to making desperate decisions, but making a deal with Lucifer himself—sacrificing her soul to save a loved one—has got to be her most monumental. Several hundred years into her tenure as a demon, Effie's found herself engaged to Belphegor, a handsome, seductive, and successful Prince of Hell. It’s not a love match, but it’ll do. There’s just one teensy-tiny little She’s still bound to her sixteenth-century Scottish husband. While Effie has completely cast her human life aside, Finn has been reincarnated through several lifetimes.
Effie must convince Finn to renounce their age-old vows in order get the Office of Infernal Internal Affairs off her back. The kicker? When she finds him in this lifetime, Finn doesn’t remember anything, but he refuses her request for a divorce.
Annoyed to be stuck with him in small-town Georgia until she can persuade Finn to renounce their marriage, Effie must convince him that yes, she does want to get on with her devilish shenanigans despite the physical pull she feels toward him. As they get closer in hopes of recovering his lost memories, Effie can’t help but notice murmurings of her deeply buried feelings resurfacing. But while all’s fair in love and war, that’s not the case in Hell—and Lucifer may have his own reasons for wanting to keep Finn and Effie apart for the rest of eternity.
Alexandria Bellefleur is a bestselling and award-winning author of swoony contemporary romance often featuring loveable grumps and the sunshine characters who bring them to their knees. Her special skills include finding the best Pad Thai in every city she visits, remembering faces but not names, falling asleep in movie theaters, and keeping cool while reading smutty books in public. 4.5⭐️ oh my god. this was wonderful. i absolutely LOVE alexandria bellefleur (the devil she knows, book one, was one of my favourite books of last year) so i knew this was going to be a banger. i have such a soft spot for stories involving the afterlife for some reason, especially if they almost poke fun at themselves, and this delivered massively in that aspect. the writing was compulsively readable (i read this in one sitting!!), the romance was adorable, the female lead was incredibly funny with a very strong backbone which i always appreciate, and i found the plot line itself to be very unique. i loved this so so much, would highly recommend!!
Thank you, Berkley Romance and Netgalley for granting me access to this ARC!
Fans of True Blood and/or Buffy, this one’s for us! Such a fun read, I couldn’t put it down. I loved the banter, the quirkiness of the paranormal aspects, and the chemistry between the two main characters. The plot to steaminess ratio was perfect and I appreciated the bi4bi representation.
The story follows a demon on probation named Effie. No longer able to make soul deals, she’s on desk duty as a shitposter online. Her monotonous days at work are balanced out with her non-monogamous relationship with Belphegor, one of the seven princes of hell. They have a pretty good thing going, so when he proposes marriage, she can’t think of a reason not to say yes… except for the fact that 400 years ago she and her husband foolishly entered a soul binding vow that ties them together in every life after. According to the department of infernal affairs, she must now go to Georgia and convince a man who has no idea who she is to break a marriage vow he made many lives ago, before she can return and marry her fiancé.
If you haven’t read The Devil She Knows, that’s okay! But I do recommend reading both of these books as they are a part of the same universe and we’re introduced to Effie, in the first book.
DNF. I've loved most of the books I've read by this author, so I took this one to try without even reading the description. And this isn't listed as a sequel, but it is. And the first one is the only book by this author that I DNFed. Sadly, this was the same for me. It just isn't for me.
Okay so this book had me absolutely hooked from the first chapter and I genuinely did not want to put it down! The premise is so fun: Effie sold her soul to Lucifer centuries ago, worked her way up to becoming a demon, and is now engaged to an actual Prince of Hell. Pretty solid situation, honestly. Except there's this one small problem in that she's still technically married to her 16th century Scottish husband, Finn, who keeps getting reincarnated and just... refuses to give her a divorce. In this lifetime he does not remember a single thing about her, but he still won't sign the papers. The audacity! What I loved most is Effie as a character. She's been a demon for hundreds of years, she's sharp and sarcastic and has very much moved on from her human life, or at least she thinks she has. Watching her slowly crack around Finn while being completely in denial about it is so entertaining. And Finn is just... genuinely sweet? The contrast between them works really well. The small-town Georgia setting is a fun choice too. There's something really charming about a demon trying to navigate modern rural life while also managing hellish politics. The romance is slow-burn in the best way, the humor lands consistently, and the worldbuilding around Hell's bureaucracy is creative and actually pretty clever. The plot with Lucifer having his own agenda adds a nice layer of tension without overwhelming the central love story. Super enjoyable, easy to fly through, if you like paranormal romance with a comedic edge, this one is a great time! Thank you Berkley Romance & NetGalley for this ARC!
Damned If I Do presents as a cute paranormal romcom following Effie- a recently engaged demon who finds out she’s still married to her human husband who passed 400 plus years ago. Finn (the husband in questions) has been reincarnated over and over throughout the centuries and in a last ditch effort to marry her demon boyfriend, she seems him out to renounce his vows. I say it presents this way, but really it is an emotional rollercoaster of longing and missed opportunity and what ifs.
When Effie seeks out Finn so many centuries after her death, she’s not expecting him to look like her late husband. But he’s a mirror image and he acts like him as well. Finn doesn’t remember Effie but he knows enough that he isn’t about to renounce their vows without truly understanding why they made them in the first place. The dynamic between these two absolutely killed me, I swear after every deep conversation they had I was crying. The star crossed lovers that despite the odds stacked against them somehow make it back to each other.
Now although it was very emotional (for me at least) it was still funny. It was such an amazing a well rounded experience this story. I really wasn’t expecting it to be one of my top 2026 books. But alas here we are and I have no regrets. Please for your own sake don’t sleep on Alexandria Bellefleur, read the book!
I actually liked this more than Ths Devil She Knows, which this is in the same universe as. I generally read mostly sapphic romance novels, so I wasn't expecting to like the m/f one more.
Some things I really liked: good chemisty between leads, love a soulmates/I'll find you in any life situation, funny bit about gnomes!, small town side characters who add a nice texture to the setting, and the world-building around the afterlife. Love a character who goes from "I am so evil and tough, you don't even know" to "I just have a lot of feelings".
Probably my favorite by Alexandria Bellefleur is still The Fiancée Farce, but this is definitely in the upper half, and I've enjoyed all of them. If you liked Truly, Madly, Deeply, this is another bi4bi m/f romance by the same author with similar intense sexual chemistry.
Alexandria is on of my favorite authors, and this book is just another reason. The complexity of Effie's character that ties in toward the ending is just *chef's kiss*. I genuinely don't have any other words except that I enjoyed it so much and will now be going back and rereading "The Devil She Knows" just to feel something.
The cover IMMEDIATELY CAUGHT MY EYE THE COLORS ?THE COUPLE? EVERYTHING? This is also the third ARC I’ve read by this author and I can safely say I’ve loved all of them, but this one may have been the top read so far. The yearning was so immaculate on both sides, and I love the devilish themes that came into play and the continued story from ‘the devil she knows’.
