This was the perfect end to what some would call an imperfect series. Williams has created a world that’s so richly layered and alive, that you can’t help but escape into it as you read. Throughout the series main character Malik Baron is trying to find his place in the world, and that search comes to a head in Ashes at the Altar.

Malik has been through a lot, but this book tests him in a way that only the final book in a series can. There’s so much placed on his shoulders that I could almost feel the weight myself. Malik has to make choices in this book that not only affect his future, but that of Caiman University as a whole.

I thoroughly enjoyed this closing entry in the series, and feel Williams completely stuck the landing when it comes to ending a series in a satisfying way. Readers will have their questions answered, fates of their favorite (and not so favorite) characters revealed, and hopefully walk away from the series with a sense of fulfillment.

It's not uncommon for me to cry over fictional characters these days. I'm a marshmallow. However, it is rare for me to cry 10 times in one book. That is probably an underestimation, too.

Ashes at the Altar absolutely wrecked me, in the best of ways.

Coming to the end of the tale for Malik and his friends and family. was not easy, they had a lot of work left undone after everything in Bones at the Crossroads, and none of that work should have been on the shoulders of a group of college students.

That is one the central themes in this book and one of the reasons I found myself sobbing so frequently: the labor that was put on the backs of these young Black children and the parallels to the world today.

Incredibly written, fantastically paced, and full of twists and turns that kept me turning the page even when I should have been doing other things - this book owned my life for the day and a half it took me to read.

I am so sad to say goodbye to the world of Caiman U - what a fantastic journey it was.

The whole of Act 3 wrecked me.
Man, I don’t know where to start. I LOVED this book. I think it was the best ending for this particular trilogy. I know it was an imperfect series, but this book? The ending? PERFECT.
Malik has been through SO much, and by the time I got to this 3rd and final book, I just wanted to see him happy. I would’ve settled for content at this point. LaDarrion managed to wrap everything up in a neat and tidy manner.
There were a few curveballs he threw in, and looking back, I can’t believe I didn’t see where he was going with them. But it made perfect sense after all was said and done.
Perfectly paced, beautifully written, and well ended. I’m going to miss Caiman and Malik and everyone.

Malik continues to grapple with powerful ancestral magic, family conflict, and a dangerous supernatural threat. At the center of the conflict is the evil spirit Marinette, who has been possessing Malik’s mother and whose influence continues to grow even after previous attempts to contain her. As her power spreads, the magical community surrounding Caiman begins to fracture, with old alliances breaking down and new dangers emerging. Malik is now forced into an even more complicated position as he begins connecting with his father’s side of the family, the Bonclairs, whose power and legacy introduce both opportunity and conflict. At the same time, tensions rise between his parents, whose history is filled with betrayal, mistrust, and unresolved pain tied to “bane magick” and past choices that still haunt them. Malik needs to make decisions that will affect his parents, his family and his friends and he discovers the decisions may be too much for him to handle.

I loved this series. Malik holds such a special place in my heart. I felt like a proud Auntie watching my nephew come into his own. LaDarrion made these characters feel like family. This was a little more emotional than i was expecting and had my emotions all over the place.

Malik has so much on his shoulders and some really tough decisions to make. There were some twists that I DID NOT see coming. I ate this up. This series did not dissappoint. I can't wait to see whats next from LaDarrion🤎
