Крихітка Мю любить бавитися в хованки і завжди ховається в найнесподіваніших місцях - там, де її найважче знайти. Ось і цього разу вона причаїлася в такому хитрому куточку, що Мумі-тролеві доведеться добряче помізкувати.
Tove Jansson was born and died in Helsinki, Finland. As a Finnish citizen whose mother tongue was Swedish, she was part of the Swedish-speaking Finns minority. Thus, all her books were originally written in Swedish.
Although known first and foremost as an author, Tove Jansson considered her careers as author and painter to be of equal importance.
Tove Jansson wrote and illustrated her first Moomin book, The Moomins and the Great Flood (1945), during World War II. She said later that the war had depressed her, and she had wanted to write something naive and innocent. Besides the Moomin novels and short stories, Tove Jansson also wrote and illustrated four original and highly popular picture books.
Jansson's Moomin books have been translated into 33 languages.
Like Moomin's Little Book of Words, Moomin's Hide and Seek is another great way to introduce children to the world of Scandinavian Moomins at a young, impressionable age. In some ways a typical hide and seek lift-the-flap book, this story has the advantage of introducing your children to characters as strange and fantastical as the Hemulen and Fillyjonk. If you're not lucky enough to live in a country with Moomin stores in the mall (i.e. Finland) then the least you can do is read your kids a few Moomin books.
Moomin's books are my preschoolers favorite book series. They love the interactiveness of the flaps and I often find them hiding the books in the back of my bookshelf to save for themselves. I love seeing my students so excited about a book!
My 2 1/2 year old granddaughter loved this so much she wanted it read to her at every opportunity. She was enthusiastically surprised at every lift of the flap even though she had it memorized and frequently did the "reading aloud" to whoever was supposedly sharing the book with HER. We had to sneak it out of the house to return it to the library.
Makes me curious about the Moomin chapter book series.
This book is the exact same book as "Elmer Plays Hide and Seek" except it has weird characters with funny names that don't make sense... "Snufkin" and "Hemulen" and what is the deal with the creepy-looking "Little My"?
After trying to find this book on Goodreads I realize there is a bunch of Moomin's books, but this is my first exposure and I had no identification or knowledge about who or what the characters are about. As for my kids... they listened to the book and were excited to lift the flap, but were confused each time at what they found.
I've read this book to my 1 year old daughter so many times. She loves it. Especially the mirror at the end. The only thing I dislike is that the text in the book says something like "I see a black purse, who is hiding?" (I've only read it in swedish so I don't now the exact english translation) and ofcourse it's Moominmamma hiding, but there are no black purse to be seen, only a bush. But apart from that both me and my daughter enjoy this book!
Apparently, I must be missing something... I think I deal better in teaching reality than whimsy. Since I was reading it to an 18 month old it was difficult for me to have my daughter lift the flaps to find something imaginary and a little silly. Perhaps when she is a little older we might try this series again.
I CANNOT WAIT to read this with my baby. He loves lift the flap books. The story in this one is simple and fun and the expressions on Moomin's face as he searches for Little My are delightful. Of the three Tove Jansson baby books I just read, this one really showcases her droll sense of humor.
