I hope you like reading details about how the magic system works, and about the authors political system, rather than actual story.
All of that could have been condensed but I think the author needed to show everyone his entire thought process.
The additional viewpoints of various lower tier, random people were interesting though. Some could have been tied into the story better, toward the end.

an absolute slog of a read
I’ve enjoyed this series and was looking forward to this book. Book 12 isn’t really a book in my opinion - it should be a 11.5 or something. Storyline where? Oh there are bits and pieces, here and there, but it’s mainly POV of different characters and how they handle getting incorporated into the Empire. They play with rifts and making auras. There is a lot of nothing going on in this book. You could skip this book and you would only miss irrelevant details. I hate leaving a bad review for a series I have liked until now. Hopefully the next book will be better.

The beginning of this book focuses more on Matt's rift research and the politics of Matt and Liz's duchy. It's more about the planets themselves then the typical politics between people. It does ask an interesting question of what would happen if our world suddenly got told magic people existed. It doesn't go that in depth with the question but you see some of it.
About halfway through the dungeon runs and fighting start for those interested more in that aspect. This is where a lot of grammatical errors begin to be found. It does stop towards the 70-75% mark but it felt like every paragraph had an error.

I acknowledge that, when reading fiction, you don't hold the world and the story up to the standards of reality. Superman, for instance, has complexity to the level of power he holds that ruin his character if you think about it too much. Where is the line for when he must do something and when he is being a fascist? Not a problem in his stories, though. Because I am happy to engage with a story on it's own terms. Batman is similar. Would he objectively improve more lives and reduce crime more if he used all his wealth to support the less fortunate? Obviously. But he's a superhero and not an economics character, so we put that aside when engaging with his character.
This is how I made it 12 long novels into Path of Ascension, which presents an Empire with a benevolent monarch at it's head. If I look at this concept as if it were reality, is it really plausible or consistent with itself? No. The emperor is a tyrant just by way of being an emperor, and his rule effects trillions of lives that are treated as expendable. But the story is a fantasy of people in power actually caring about the people they hold power over. It's escapism, and the fact that it isn't possible bothers me no more than the fact that magic isn't real. It's a fun story.
So why did I wait until book 12 to complain? Because Matt and Liz crossed the line of consistency and started doing legitimate tyranny even within the logic of the story itself. This is not necessarily a bad story beat on it's own, except the writer doesn't even seem to realize it's happening. The two leads casually commit an atrocity, and the book promotes it as a *good* thing, and portray those who oppose it as irrational.
I get the writer is trying to imagine how immortals might see the world differently than mortals, but that's a poor excuse.
What I'm referring to is Linguistic Genocide. Matt and Liz not only happily enforcing the law behind it, but even expressing confusion that anyone would dislike it. Referring to preservation of a primary spoken language that isn't introduced by colonizers as irrational and savage. Like it doesn't matter because mortal cultures don't last forever, as if languages and culture from thousands of years ago didn't still matter now.
This is a law enforced by the "I'm not a tyrant" emperor, by the way.
A new world in the empire legally *must* teach the common language as the *primary* language in schools. Which is literally a real world atrocity that is committed against real world cultures every day, and is entirely unnecessary. It is a rule put in place for the comfort of oppressors at the expense of the cultures they hate. In the United States alone, there are 300 *natively* spoken languages. The country runs *better* when these are celebrated instead of replaced. In the world at large? There are thousands. And yes, there is a language barrier. Yes, there are cultural differences. That is a good thing. There is no excuse for the author promoting a forced homogenized language on countless people as necessary, rational, and moral. They *literally* have magic that handles translation. DO cultural norms always translate perfectly? No. But that's exactly why the enforced suppression of language is so evil. One of many reasons. Those differences are important and worth defending. Forcing schools in a country you conquered to tech your language *instead* of their own? Incredibly evil. And the animosity it inspires is justified. And it is literally pointless, since the people doing it are shown communicating perfectly with the people they are doing it to.
This is presented alongside good things like housing and healthcare as a human right etc. Things that can be done to help other cultures without erasing them. I can tell the author is trying to portray what benevolence would look like in this situation. But the presentation of linguistic genocide as good and rational and anything but tyranny and colonization is literally disgusting.
This alone is enough that, while I was happy to root for Math and Liz previously, I would now likely cheer for both to be killed. If I were to continue reading the story. Thus always to tyrants. My they find themselves on as many guillotines as it takes to end them for good and free people from their horrifying colonization practices. They are both horrible people, and they didn't have to be. All they had to do was not be incredibly racist and promote real world racism and linguistic genocide as natural and good.

I’ve really enjoyed the series but it felt like this book was more filler than substance. The lack of real stakes or overarching conflict made it challenging to really engage with.

With every review you have the option to hide due to spoilers. Pointless option for this book because nothing happens. For those who gave it five stars you can’t deny that you could skip this book and not miss a beat in the plot. Some argue it’s a nice slice of life story. In my opinion an average slice of life story. The author has become transfixed from book seven on adding meaningless POV’s. I recently watched an episode of Invincible that involved one off characters and their POV it was masterfully executed. I can’t say the same in this book. It feels like empty fluff to add content to Patreon. The frustrating thing is I really enjoyed the series but it’s becoming less substance more and more empty calories. Save your self the time and money and pass on this novel.
This isn’t so much part of the review more of a plea to the author or rant to a faceless audience. For the love of all that is good and holy learn how to use multiple POV’s or avoid them entirely. You have introduced so many side characters who would make excellent choices for POV chapters. Yet you constantly choose to write pointless chapters for forgettable characters. You could do what Awaken Online did and have side characters novels and merge the storylines. Maybe follow Plum Parrot and have crossover novels. If you really want to be ambitious Wandering Inn has too many characters to have them all involved in each book. I truly hope this series is fixed before it becomes another DNF series.

Another great one
This book does a great job of exploring the characters and world. It feels a bit episodic, with a variety of smaller plots running in sequence rather than one focused plot. This serves the story's perspective on the life of a young immortal.
The opening 5% or so is a bit slow and doesn't feel like it builds to anything important or interesting, in my opinion. But the rest if the book is well paced and balances action and relationships well.
Overall, I would recommend reading this book.

Massive data dump. I feel as though I could start my Master’s degree in aperology and create aura rifts tomorrow. Still, I’m enjoying the series, and I enjoyed Matt and Liz establishing their duchy with the different worlds from the various Great Powers, but totally different vibe than any other book in the series. However, just as you’re getting to the end a new discovery is revealed and the book ends. Damn you C. Mantis…take my money.

Definitely a slower addition to the series. I didn't hate it but it was far from my favorite. At least it points towards more excitement.
It is really hard to come down from a major story line and run right into another big adventure point, so at no fault to the author do I find my lacking interest.

You could probably skip this book and just go from 11 to 13 as this one only contained a handful of pages that progressed the story

I was disappointed in this book in the series. It felt like Mantis just took his world-building notes and wrote a book about nothing. If you love being an administrator, that is the premise of this entire slog. He gets another chance from me with the next release, but he may have jumped the shark with this one.

DNF at 40%.
I realize the author probably felt he needed to change things up after countless books filled with fighting, but I really DO. NOT. CARE. This politics and research stuff is just horrible. I complained about the fight scenes in previous books, because they were atrocious, but somehow I want them back just so I can stop being bored to tears by whatever "slice of life" this book is trying to be.
I kept going longer than expected in this series because Allie got added to the team for a while, and she's awesome. But I think this is it, I'm done. I appreciate that this was one of the better series out there, but unfortunately it kind of had a built in expiration date due to them being immortal and thousands of years being not that big of a deal going forward. I suppose there could be an interesting story somewhere in here dealing with them throwing parties with millions of people attending and spending months making small talk, and new planets getting delivered to them and having to deal with all the politics, and researching how to make custom rifts...but the author hasn't managed to capture any of that potentially interesting story here.
And to be clear, I don't want them fighting all the time either, because those fight scenes were just horrible. But they were better than this.
It was a good series for longer than I expected, but they all run out of steam eventually. If I remember to care in the future I'll just read a summary of the future books, as I'm sure I won't miss much exciting at all.

Lot slower this volume, which I think is a good turn considering the recent war. That being said I don't think this one will be for everyone as there's very little in the way of combat and the minor fights we do see, I actually thought they overstay their welcome.

We got to see what it was like for people on veiled worlds being awakened for the first time and introduced to the wider universe and that was quite the interesting viewpoint. Seems so good on paper, but for anyone who isn't a child it must come across as a total hostile takeover.

Any spare moment I could I would spend reading this and got through it ridiculously fast and I'm once again all caught up with the series. I'm still liking it but it wasn't the best book, and while I'm not super interested in all the fights where they seem really easy these days, I did miss the fact that Matt doesn't get to spend all his time with Liz or Aster like he used to. Yes they have different skill sets and new things to do but I'd hoped that they would do most of the stuff together like they did while on the Path. There are some new tantalizing things happening near the end of the book that will keep me interested in book 13 (that wasn't going to change even after finishing this one) but for those that found this story to be a bit lacking I can understand the lure approach. Looking forward to book 13 and now its a waiting game.

As I predicted in my last review, this entry contains a whole lot of nothing substance wise. With the end of the war, the team focuses on developing their Dukedoms. A major part of the work is spent in a planet from the Republic being integrated into the Empire, which while anthopologically interesting, was not explored in any sense to flash out their unique society and the subtleties of integration. They were a copy paste of Earth, and the integration amounted to people being corrupt, some discovering cultivation, and a broader release of info. Additionally, the book spent considerable time in Matt's aperology (rift creation) guild. While the last entry was overwhelmingly action packed, this one suffers from the opposite problem. I'm grateful there are no released books right now, as I certainly need a break.

The rest was pages upon pages of empire economics and future plot points. Which is fine to a degree but it left the book feeling decidedly like a placeholder for the sequel. instead of an actual sequel to a book that was literally about an intergalactic war spanning trillions of people in active conflict. Following up the high stakes and emotional ride of the last book by being given what felt like a transcript of a YouTube video of someone playing an empire building game. Just felt meh. Amazing writing and still love the world and characters and will read the next. But this one just fell a bit flat.

Sorry, but that was boring. Its well written but I didnt read the previous 11 books in the series to be confronted with 600 plus pages of pointless side character chapters and an idiots guide on how to run a kingdom. Very little action in this book with constant technical delvings into skills and artifacts that get tedious after 200 pages.
The time frame that the book is jamming down our throats doesnt help either as its measured in decades and centuries (if not millenniums) which makes it a struggle to connect with the story when you suddenly jump 10 years with no filling in the missing time.
A marked disappointment from the earlier entries in the series and quite frankly im thinking of stopping here. Its close to dropping into the 2 star realm.

The war has ended, now it is time to deal with founding a new duchy from planets that for the most part have their origin in foreign cultures and starting his research guild. What follows is mostly slice-of-life with that in mind, which comes with some interesting points of view in regards to the planet introduced to magic for the first time, and a few delves, but nothing big happens. I found the author bringing up some points on how people with short life spans would look differently on their own culture compared to how an immortal would. Still, if you don't like slice-of-life this will be a rather boring read for you. For me it was a solid cosy read, but not the best in the series.

4.5 stars for some reason I had heard the beginning 80% of the book. Matt going to his new planets messing up learning that integration of new planets from other powers takes time. They make mistakes.
Cool to see Liz dad beat up the lvl 40 on their behalf.
Excited to see what the ascension means and what the ruler of the empire saw. I am excited to continue to see the growth from Matt’s guild. Excited to see aster and her growth.
Very much a book about after the war. The main group leveling up and adjusting to being the powerful who others respect and are scared of.

This was the book I was waiting to read throughout the whole series. It's when they finally settle into their own duchy and start building stuff and integrating planets. Except there was a large plot hole where they contradicted themselves. At first they said they were too friendly but then they said they were not friendly enough and acted like dukes instead of ascenders. So which one is it? They said it was a mistake to act as either, so what the hell? It made no sense.
I was very dissatisfied and will stop reading the series now.

I didn't enjoy this one as much as the previous ones, but still enjoyed it enough to pre-order the sequel. I ended up skipping through large portions of this book. I was also annoyed that there was a chunk of the book dedicated to pronouns. It just seemed arbitrary and not needed. This is book 12, and nowhere in the previous 11 books were they every mentioned, so it seemed they were just inserted and didn't fit in with the already created world.

This is like a new series - the Path of Bureaucracy. It just kind of rambled without any purpose, with most of the book talking about politics and the things our new Dukes have to deal with. There were some fights and delves and catching up with old friends scattered throughout, but much of it seemed like filler. Finally, at the end of the book, something came up that might breathe some life into the next episode.

This is one of those pause in between books where we see less action but do a good bit of filling in the blanks and expansion of the workd building.
Some great moments as we see just what the interests of our MCs will do to the future whilst we still gather slowly towards the true war. Be interesting to see exactly how we prepare in the next book and what discoveries will be prepared.

I have loved all of the other books in this series, and I had a hard time putting them down. I wish that I could have said this about this book. I dreaded picking it up again. I know we were coming from all the action of the last book, and that just isn't sustainable. In my opinion, the author went to deep into explaining mundane facts the inner workings of his universe. These facts might come into play in the next edition. Overall, I really did not

Not much of note happens in this entry. A good chunk of the story is showing how a mundane republic world works when transitioning to the empire. Kind of boring. The characters I’m interested in were the only thing that kept me reading. Hopefully we get more story advancement in the next.

As usual the writing and characters are great.
This was a slower novel that was well paced, even if it was drastically different from previous novels and the editing is much improved. C. Mantis continues with craftwork that matures each time and I appreciate authors that grow while crafting their worlds.
