You are a successful actor who won several daytime Emmy. Your live-in partner for several years, whom you love, sometimes goes to the Hollywood parties with you. In those parties, which you don't really like but are necessary evil in showbiz, you talk and meet with directors, producers, etc., leaving your partner making friends of his own. Just so happen that those 'friends' are drug dealers and addicts, which at the end, so is your partner. Since you love him, you didn't realize that he used your money in the joint account to buy drugs. When you stop giving the money, he starts to hit you. Often. What would you do? What would people (and your fans) say when they realize that you're a victim of domestic abuse but couldn't do anything about it?

Tyler feels guilty for being ignorant of what happens to Alex that he allows himself to be physically abused for about a year. For the third time, he doesn't want to press charge when his neighbor calls on police and arrest Alex. That is, until a 28-yr old police officer, Shane, talks to him about what happened to his own abused sister. She was killed by her abusive husband. Tyler listens to Shane, and their relationship starts.

I really enjoyed reading this book. The relationship is built through friendship and trust. It's slow and steady. (They don't get physically involved until 60% into the story, and even then it's only kissing). The author describes Shane's life as a K-9 officer, which is full of uncertainty and danger, both to him and his dog. Also life as a famous actor, that is almost devoid of privacy in public and sometimes has to avoid crazy fans.

This is very moving book. It's sweet, but also full of challenges, not tooth-ache sweet. It covers various serious issues: domestic abuse, dangerous life of policeman, drug addiction, near-stalking fans, homicide, and so on. Yet, it's full of hope, not making us depressed.

Highly recommended.

Yay! A re-read that lives up to it's 5 stars! This is a full-blown, soap-operay delight. I don't believe it was trying to be campy, but it kinda turned out that way, IMHO. A lot of the scenes were a bit cliché and over-the-top, but just WORKED, ya know? Like, MC Shane is angry with MC Tyler for putting himself at unnecessary risk, trying to save Shane's life.
Shane took a step toward Tyler, his body vibrating with anger and suppressed fear. "He had a gun, Tyler! What if he'd have had it on him and turned around and started shooting? What if he would've shot you? I can't –" his voice broke and he felt himself start to shake. "I can't lose you!"
And what makes this scene extra delicious? It is the prelude to the first time they make love. Outstanding! *claps* And this book is filled with moments like this. I don't care how cheesy they are, they're HOT and they WORK.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book for any and all M/M romance fans with a sense of humor that like their sex hot and steamy, but are patient and can deal with a bit of sexual tension first. Yes, this book is over-the-top, so know that going in and enjoy the ride. Because Tyler certainly enjoyed his ride right before the premiere of Midnight Journey. *wink*

It'll take me some time to pick myself up from the sugar coma this book put me in. And then I'll have to deal with the issues of landing back to reality (what with all the suspension of disbelief I had to hurdle for) and the disturbing mental image of James Belushi as a gay K-9 officer.
I may have to resort to therapy.

It's a Hollywood romance with a Hollywood HEA ending ... and I LOVE IT. I think both Shane and Tayler are wonderful characters. Domestic abuse is never been a comfortable issue for me to read and I love how Jamie Lynn tackles this issue. I love how Shane and Tayler move from friends to lovers, slowly but steady because Tayler is a victim of domestic abuse. They don't quickly jump the sheet. Chase, the dog, is also a great additional characters (love him). I also love how Jamie Lynn adds the nuance of details of everyday K-9 police officer's activity. And the ending is just sooooo sweeeeeeeet!!!!

I think I find another author that I'd like to keep my eyes on.

Bland and cheesy and nothing that can hold your interest. You could replace the MCs with teenage boy and girl and nothing would change. Seriously, they don't act like two supposedly grown-up men at all.
Also they are not really bright. Their conversations are at kids level mostly. But overall writing is very simplistic so that must be the reason.

Oh, and the plot. After they got over Tyler's abuse and moved into a high school romance stage - where you get jolts every time you brush occasionally and wait for the right time to have sex - which is kind of strange for men over 30 years old. But okay, maybe I'm spoiled by other, much better books where it's different. So after they got over that as well, it was just shootings and MCs getting wounded in turns while the other one goes crazy and teary.

All in all, I didn't like it at all.

I loved this book! Definitely a 4.5. The only thing keeping it from a 5 for me is that I wish there'd been a few less time jumps. I really would have liked to have seen more of their romance. Having grown up as the kid of a cop who had a K9 partner I want to compliment Ms. Miller on how well she nailed it. At a guess I would suspect that the author has either a close friend or family member who is a cop partnered with a K9. Reading about Chase brought back a lot of nice memories of my Dad's K9, Prince.

Ok, it seems like everyone either hates or loves this book. I can kind of see both sides, but I definitely fell closer to the "hates" side of things.

Most of the other reviews are pretty spot on. A sappy romance, relatively hot sex, definitely need to brace yourself for saccharine poisoning. My problem with it was not the over-the-top sweetness (I've read and even liked several of AKM Mile's books, for goodness sake), it was the painful simplicity.

The writing was smooth enough, I suppose, but it felt incredibly watered down, written at almost a YA level. The characters have no real depth, and they react like children. On his first solo ride in LA, Shane doesn't feel like a man doing a dangerous job and being proud of doing it well. He feels like a little boy dressed up in his dad's clothes, excited about how cool it is to play cops and robbers. Tyler doesn't react in ways that feel genuine; there is 0 emotional realism or depth. After a year of abuse, a year of refusing to even consider pressing charges against his abuser, it takes literally 3 or 4 sentences from Shane--a man he met only hours before--to completely reverse gears, press charges, sign a restraining order and pack up the now-ex's clothes. Within 2 weeks, he appears to have totally forgotten both the abuse and the ex.

The sex was hit and miss as well. Some of it was hot, but some of it was so poorly described, I couldn't even figure out who was on top or which man was doing what to the other. Which, now that I think about it, may have been a symptom of the simple writing. The writing was vague and at a very low level of sophistication, so the setting, the characters, the world itself was only sketched rather than vividly painted.

I'll admit, I enjoyed some parts of the story. They were a fairly cute couple, if painfully predictable, but it was hard to feel invested in characters when you not only know nothing bad will ever happen to them, but that they will invariably recover from any token attempts at tension or angst within pages, sometimes within a few paragraphs! I don't mind a sweet story, or one with an HEA and very little tension or angst, but this one was just so blah it felt totally pointless. There was nothing that stood out, nothing to make it unique or memorable, and there was so little genuine emotion that it was impossible to feel any real connection with the characters.

Overall, I'd say if you're in the mood for some sweet HEA fluff, you can find equally sweet stories with much better writing elsewhere.

I really, really dug this story, man. It's a Hollywood romance through and through.

Tyler is a sweet and sexy movie star who's being abused by his coke addict partner. Shane is the tasty and kind-hearted cop, part of the K-9 unit, who's called out to Tyler's house on a domestic abuse call. And then there's Chase, Shane's awesome dog whose also his partner at work.

This is a pretty simple story of how Shane helps Tyler break away from his abusive partner, how Shane and Alex become friends, how they slowly but surely fall in love. What I liked was that you get to see these men hanging out, drinking beer, eating steaks, playing with the dog, working and just spending time together. When they finally (finally!) kiss I was like "Awwwww..hells yeah!!".

That first kiss scene was so freaking romantic! The whole book was. I could easily see this book playing out like a romance movie. Were parts of it totally idealistic? Yeah, but I didn't mind because it felt so much like I was sitting in a theater with a big 'ol bag of popcorn and a cheesy grin on my face.

There were scenes while Shane is working and comes up against criminals that I was like "Oh, no. Watch out, Shane!". You get to read a good bit about Shane and his K-9 dog, Chase. I liked that. I liked that he was a K-9 cop too because usually the cops are homicide or something. This was a new take on things. I loved Chase too; a heroic and amazing dog for real.

The end of this book was seriously satisfying. I was happy that these men got their happy ending. It was almost like I could see the credits rolling after the book ended. It was a Hollywood ending for sure, and I adored it. Like I said at the beginning; a Hollywood romance through and through.

Loved this book , filled with life issues and emotions, but not enough to over load the sences just make one sit up and take note. Firstly a quick blurb on whats instore in side the cover. Shane is a new cop to the K9 unit. His first domestic call is to a well known actor, tyler donovan. A man broken down inside due to the violence he is on the wrong end of by his partner. This story deals with how these two men deal with real life issues and weather or not they have a love strong enough to deal with the fears and emotions left by internal or external forces.
both characters were both believable and lovable. Each man gaining strenth by being together. I loved the way they both were there for each other. There are just so many moments that took my breath away with the raw emotion we see from both .It deals with domestic violence, in a very sensitvie way, giving the reader the feelings one deals with when faced with a very modern day problem.
The added K9 involvement was also an interesting facit of the book. Loving dogs was a defiante plus for my high rating here as well. Two hot guys ( not to mention on in uniform) and a dog what more could you want in a story.
I really found myself totally involved with all the characters, couldnt put it down and found myself a little teary eyed at the end. ahhh sweeet
*out of the shadows* is the title but you find yourself bathed in the light at the end,,, totally belivable and totally awesome ,,, s*

3.5 - Well written love story that does not fall on overly dramatic scenes or really insta love. The cop and the movie star are a perfect pair and Jamie Lynn Miller captures their story very well.

2.5 ⭐️

This wasn’t bad, but it’s very surface level. I actually prefer stories with low relationship angst, but you can still have outside drama to make the story gripping and more engrossing. This book didn’t really have that until very near the end, and by then, it was predictable what would happen. There was just too much smooth sailing from the very beginning. Three things that annoyed me: 1) the pool scene (water is not lube and it’s nasty) 2) that Shane leaves Chase, his K9 partner, outside overnight (conveniently when all the drama goes down). Excuse me, all dogs should be treated like family and never left to sleep outside, but K9 dogs, especially, are cared for at the highest level. No self-respecting K9 officer would make their dog partner sleep outside. This was done as a plot device, because with Chase IN the house, the baddie would’ve never gotten close to either Shane or Tyler. But it’s a glaring error, because it just wouldn’t happen. 3) As a K9 officer, Shane probably makes a little more than a non-specialized officer, but dropping $2500 on a charity auction is downright unbelievable.

As for the technical aspects of the writing, it needs a lot of work. There is an abundance of comma issues throughout. And from about 60% on, the errors and typos beyond the comma issues really started piling up.

Overall, kind of a disappointing read. Unless this author joins KU, I likely won’t risk money on another of her books.

AMAZING

This is an AMAZING Book!! Tyler is a high profile Hollywood star. Shane is a newly transferred K-9 Police Officer. He handles K-9 Chase. When Tyler finds himself in a abusive relationship he feels trapped. When Officer Shane Walker responds it changes his life and perspective. This is an AMAZING low angst romance. Everybody needs a hero, it's wonderful when that hero is the love of your life. This Author JAMIE LYNN MILLER has a tender touch with these characters. I loved this Book. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK!!!!!

I liked it

Tyler and Shane were destined to be together from their first meeting. Unfortunately, Tyler was a victim of domestic violence at the hands of his ex, Alex. Shane is a K-9 cop and Tyler is an actor on the verge of his big break when their paths cross when Shane is dispatched to Tyler's home after another domestic incident. Lots of hurt/comfort and plenty of action keep you invested in the story. Well written and I would recommend reading this book.

Such a sweet story. Police officer Shane Walker literally falls head over heels in love with actor Tyler Donovan who's in an abusive relationship her trying to get out of with Shane's help and encurraging. The story itself takes a little time to get started but all the twists and turns makes it that much more appealing.

Kobo edition (9781393896586) with the kindle cover; first edition, no printed ISBN - 272 pages

While there is some predictability in these romances the detail here seems impressive and the cast is expanded by the inclusion of a dog (it's a k9 Unit... ) with an engaging personality. A quick, happy ending read.

A great novel for a friends to lovers romance with a Hollywood actor and cop themed. This was brilliantly researched with police procedures.

The first half of the book they get to know each other while Tyler hides from the media about his bust up with Alex and what he's gone through. The latter half they bring out the romance along with some dramas scenes. my full blog review

4.5 stars. Half star less because I didn't like the time jumps (though it does keep the story moving).

I loved the friendship developed prior to the romance. It was very organic.

This is the third book by Jamie Lynn Miller that I’ve read and enjoyed. Out of the Shadows begins as rookie K-9 officer Shane Walker answers a call at his favorite actor’s home in Hollywood. Tyler Donovan is beautiful, talented and has a secret – his long-term boyfriend, Alex, has been abusing him for nearly a year. As Alex is arrested and taken away, Shane offers his help to Tyler to get Alex out of his life for good. As Tyler struggles to put his life back together, the two men slowly develop a friendship that will eventually lead to romance.

Romance is the key to this novel. The build-up of Tyler and Shane’s relationship is gradual – they don’t have sex until half-way through the book – but felt right in this instance. The reader could understand why Tyler would want to take things slow, after the disaster with Alex; he needs to know he can trust Shane with his heart and his body. There is no Insta-Love in Out of the Shadows, but a steady acceptance between the two men as they learn to love one another, and then the hot sexing begins.

Another plus for me is the believability and realism of Shane’s job as a K-9 cop. As a former police officer myself, I often find romance novels that have a law enforcement back-drop are often unrealistic and not properly researched. That is not the case in Jamie Lynn Miller’s Out of the Shadows, whose research into the criminal justice system is evident throughout the book. She really nails Shane’s dedication to his profession and his ‘partner’ Chase (the dog) is a delightful addition to the plot.

The only niggle I had was the ending, which seemed to be fairly predictable from the outset, but otherwise, I really enjoyed this novel. I highly recommend it and hope the author will consider a sequel. I’d love to see more of Tyler and Shane now that they’ve come out as a couple in Tyler’s high profile world of Hollywood.

I really liked that this story had a police K-9 officer. It gave a little insight into the training a K-9 unit goes through and how valuable they are to the police force. Shane's dog Chase was not only his police partner but a member of his family as well. It would have been heartbreaking to lose him in the line of duty. Shane was a very tender and caring individual who truly wanted to help people, especially victims of domestic abuse. When he responded to a 911 call involving TV/movie actor Tyler, he knew he couldn't walk away until Tyler was safe again. Shane helped Tyler get through a difficult time in his life and they became close friends and lovers as a result. Although it took a while for them to become intimate, they were pretty hot together when it happened. Along with a tender romance, this story also had suspense and drama because of Shane's job and Tyler's ex. Even though I thought the story should have maybe explored in more detail the psychological damage Tyler had to work through as a result of the domestic violence, he and Shane did a good job in moving forward together and the ending was very touching.

"Out of the Shadows" intertwines a growing romantic love story with breathtaking erotica while simultaneously dealing with issues of drug addiction and domestic violence. I was captivated by the characters from the opening pages and enjoyed the journey until the final paragraph! The author, Jamie Lynn Miller, certainly knows how to craft a compelling tale that leaves her readers wanting more. Her attention to detail painted vivid images in my mind and the manner in which she weaves subplots into the story is mesmerizing. The many events that the characters endure lead to an unexpected, yet satisfying, climax. "Out of the Shadows" is exciting and steamy, erotic and tantalizing, and has me admitting that I am hooked on this author and cannot wait to read another one of her novellas!
What's even more amazing is her complete understanding of men, the male body, and their emotions and physical experiences. The author is a truly talented writer. You'll love this book! I know I did!

How could this author base a large part of the plot line on an impossible premise? The MC is a famous star in Hollywood, his new film generating Oscar buzz, and his live-in boyfriend has been photographed with him, so he is also well known to the press. Yet we are expected to believe that the Hollywood press is completely unaware that the boyfriend was arrested for the THIRD time and jailed for six months? That the new relationship has to be a secret until the MC makes it public, even though the new squeeze is apparently there almost every night for months? Seriously? That the star is allowed on a ride-along with the officer with whom he is known to be in a relationship with?

This was also predictable, clichéd and mundane. On one more note: The author had the star at a police fundraiser for families of the fallen, thanking only the husbands and fathers, completely leaving out female officers who have given their lives. Tacky, to say the least.

Laura says it perfectly in this review http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

I will add that I really enjoyed this story and it was a beautiful story.

There were some parts that I thought could have done with a bit better editing. Like a few phrases repeated alot.

I really recommend it as a fun and romantic read.

NOTE: in this story the author writes as if the world is perfect. For example the cop is out and nothing is mentioned about him being gay. Also the actor is out and proud but becomes a hollywood hit.

I dont mind this angle of writing. I wish the world was that perfect :)

This was a solid feel-good sort of book, which I leisurely enjoyed reading with a large mug of latte. The plot showed a sweet Hollywood romance, nothing too complicated or angsty, peppered with a few obstacles and twists on a familiar theme to keep the story interesting and well-balanced. The K-9 police action also gave an authentic touch. It was refreshing to see Shane and Tyler's romance develop without constant reference to the latter's abusive relationship with his former partner. Both protagonists were working hard to build a better present and future, leaving firmly behind shadows from the past. Recommended!
