Flora's Day: A Cornish Love Story

Rate this book
Flo Richards is done with Cornwall and in particular, with her home town, Helston. More importantly she is finished with Flora Day, Helston’s version of a May Day celebration. This was a day that was once better than Christmas and not to be missed for any reason. But that all changed sixteen years ago.

Now she’s built a successful life in LA, and her return to Helston is for one purpose only: to sell the grand house she inherited from her godfather and cut her last tie to the past. But her plan is derailed when she’s forced to lead the town’s traditional Flora Day dance with Ke Dale—her first love. As the festival pulls them back into their old rhythm, a letter from Flora’s late mother unearths a life-altering secret about her own identity.

Now all Flo has to do is survive one last Flora Day. With that done she will be free of the past. But can one day full of old traditions mend her broken heart and change her mind?

I’ve absolutely devoured this new one by Liz Fenwick….. from the sublime cover to the very last word.

Flora Richards has returned to Cornwall to take part in one last Flora Day with her first love Ke Dale & to sell the family home. A letter from the past sets in motion a chain of events she is powerless to control…

A fabulous dual-timeline read where tiny details of Flora’s childhood gradually fill in the gaps until we understand why she really wants her current visit to be her last.

I’ve lived in Cornwall for 30 years and fully understand how the county gets in your blood and how impossibly hard it would be to shake it off. I’ve also lost my parents and although this is a lovely joyful read I really resonated with the grief Flora was feeling for her mother all the way through.

The story flows full circle to a really satisfying conclusion. I was so sorry to close the last page. Liz Fenwick is the consummate story teller & really knows her Cornwall too!

This is a beautiful Cornish love story spanning thirty-eight years of love and grief for Flo Richards, who has decided she's done with Cornwall and Helston, the town where she grew up.
The story is shrouded in mystery for the reader - what happened sixteen years ago that changed everything for Flo, and will performing the last dance with her first love, Ke Dale, at the Flora's Day celebration help her heal and allow her to move on.
Flo has never known the identity of her father, and even the letter left for her after her mother's death doesn't help.
I loved learning about Flora's Day and the Hal and Tow; the author has researched these traditions in depth, making the reading fascinating.
A joyful and poignant read!

Ah, what a lovely book. Set in Helston in Cornwall and following the life of Flo, this story moves between different years, showing Flo growing up alongside the present day (2025), when she returns to Helston after the death of her godparent, Tony.

Centred around the tradition of Flora Day, we see how each year the day unfolds for Flo - who was named after the celebration because she was conceived on Flora Day. Through the years, we follow her highs and lows, and watch her friendships with Ke, Micki, and Wilf develop and deepen.

I really connected with Flo, being a similar age and at a similar stage in life, and I think that made me enjoy the book even more.

I loved the reveals at the end of the book and felt that Flo finally got the answers she needed. It truly felt like the closing of one chapter of her life, giving her the chance to move forward.

A truly delightful read, set in a beautiful place with a cast of wonderfully lovable characters. And I really enjoyed the breaking up of the chapters and learning about the history of Flora Day 💕

I have read all of Liz Fenwick books . My spiritual home I feel is Cornwall . So as soon as I saw this book I had to read it and it did not disappoint.
The book spans over years and follows the Cornish Love Story between Flora and Ke .
Floras mother has never revealed who her father is but she was conceived on Flora day through love .
Tony was Floras Godfather every year he gave Flora a journal for her to keep a diary of her thoughts her ups her downs. Flora wanted a career in film she left Helston to pursue this but at a cost.
Every year she returned to dance at the Flora, her first dance was at eight years old with Ke and most years she returned to dance with him . The Cornish love story they fell in love from their first dance but life and fears got in the way .
I could not put this book down and it did not disappoint I’ve cried I’ve smiled and I was transported to Cornwall .

Poignant and intensely atmospheric, Flora’s Day is a joyful celebration of the heart and soul of a town and the power of love, as well as a tender exploration of grief. I felt I was in Helston in Cornwall watching the Hal an Tow alongside Flora reading this gem of a novel and treasured every page I got to spend in the company of the characters. I didn't want it to end!

I know the area in which the book is set a little and feel that reading Flora's Day I have got to know it so much better. Flora is such a wonderful and memorable main character and her struggle between her heart and her head as it played out over the years completely captivated me. I don't tend to re-read many books but I already know I will be re-reading this one.

Absolutely loved this book! This will be my new Pre Flora Day tradition from now!

Flo has just inherited a lush house which is part of the most amazing day of the year (yes its better than Christmas!) Lismore opens its gates for the dancers and spectators once a year and now she wants to sell it!

Flo and Ke have been chosen to lead the midday dance and neither of them planned on taking part.

We go back over the dances in previous year's from when Flo and Ke both danced together when they were younger.

If you've not been lucky enough to witness Flora day then you need to read this and live Flora from Flo's point of view.

What a beautiful, beautiful book. It weaves past and present so effortlessly, all around Cornwall's Flora Day, which means something extra to our main character Flora. This is about love in all its forms - mothers, daughters, lovers, friends... It's about the secrets we keep to protect others, and ourselves. It's about our history, and our hopes. Fenwick has outdone herself, and you're in for such a satisfying treat with this one.

Ugh… terrible story…I’ve really enjoyed Liz’s books in the past, but this one was lacking. Having an abortion and not telling the man you love for 20 years, does not a good story make… 👎
