Enigma: Winston Hills, Book 1

Rate this book
Dr. Layanna James has mastered the art of healing broken hearts—except her own.

At forty, she's one of the world's top cardiothoracic surgeons, but the sudden loss of her husband Angel has left her emotionally hollow and clinging to the routine of a life that no longer fits.

Caleb Black knows grief intimately. A retired pro athlete, he once dreamed of traveling the world with his wife, Maria—until illness stole her from him far too soon. Now grounded in Winston Hills, he finds unexpected solace in the one woman who truly understands his Layanna, his late best friend's wife.

What begins as comfort between two grieving souls slowly simmers into something neither of them saw coming—desire, laughter, and a connection too strong to ignore. But love isn't easy when it's tangled in the past. As Layanna and Caleb navigate their growing feelings, they must also confront long-buried family secrets and the guilt that threatens to pull them apart.

Enigma is a deeply emotional, slow-burning tale of healing, forbidden desire, and the courage it takes to choose happiness—no matter how complicated the path. With steamy passion, honest vulnerability, and flashes of unexpected humor, C.M. Barnes delivers a story where love dares to grow in the cracks of heartbreak.

Narrated in duet style.

Excellent Narration from Wesleigh and Sharif.....BUT, there was context missing from the story...the duet narration is what kept my attention.

I want to start off by saying Wesleigh and Sharif ATE the narration up on this one! Love a good duet!

This was such a unique second-chance romance story, and I loved that aspect of it so much. You really have to go into this book with an open mind because it’s definitely not your conventional love story, but that’s exactly what makes it so good.

The spice is definitely spicing. This one leans more toward erotica than a traditional romance, but it still works because the story has so much heart. I loved the themes of healing, learning to love again, stepping out of the shadows, and recognizing that life (and love) isn’t always a linear journey.

The only reason I’m giving this four stars instead of five is because I wanted more of the characters’ individual stories. Each character was so intriguing and layered, and I felt like there was so much more to explore. The spice sometimes took over the story, which I didn’t always mind, but I also wanted more plot and character development to balance it out.

Since this appears to be part of a series, I’m hoping we get more insight into each character in the future books. I’ll definitely be reading more from this author!

This book is definitely for the GROWN PEOPLE! You've
been warned: the spice in this book is unmatched

This is an unconventional love story... Two friends who are both navigating grief and guilt while also nurturing their budding relationship. In addition, these two have decided to explore polyamory. We get to see just how this polycule will evolve. We get to see how love, intimacy, and friendships are not a one-size-fits-all approach.

I had the opportunity to listen to the audiobook before it released, and babbbbbbyyyyyy it was indeed the best decision ever. Just make sure you have your headphones for this one.
Narrators: Wesleigh Siobhan and Sharif Stephens ( duet narration)

I look forward to listening to the rest of the books in the series.

If I could give it a half star, I would. I believe this book would get 5 stars because it was spicy to its core. Hell, I would give it 10 stars for this alone. Those who are either into or curious about the Kink lifestyle, knows the scenes are spot on. Beyond that, this book is lacking. How many times can you say the characters never looked at the other person that way? How many times do they have to apologize for falling in love? There is so much repetitive language throughout each chapter it's easy to skip through the book. With all the hype, I was expecting more than this. Would not recommend unless you want to read nothing but p0rN. Good luck!

3.75 - The audio is very good but like did we expect anything less though. This book is grown GROWN. I love the exploring and knowing of one’s sexuality while having people around you that let you know it’s okay. They let each other be who they are. Giving each other a safe place to let go. All the main-ish characters i liked. Even how Layanna and Caleb got together. I do wish we got more time or equal time outside of the bedroom. Those moments with their jobs, therapy, and family issues were so good.

Overall i would recommend to someone who likes getting a little hot and bothered. On the other hand if smut, poly and all the above is not your thing please pass.

If overly freaked out was a novel it’s this lol 😂 spice level ghost pepper. I am a smut peddler and sometimes i be like it’s so much sec where is the plot but not so much with this book good level of plot to smut. Deaths of their spouses bring the two main characters together. The type of sec they having with all holes crazy. 🤪 lots of creamy pussy and assholes in this book. Overall great read just some words that will make you blush this is not an audiobook that you let play in traffic!!

This was my first time experience duet narration and now I don’t want to listen to an audiobook any other way. Sharif and Wesleigh did such an amazing job. Do not listen to this at work 😭😂 it was so filthy and nasty and I loved it. And the plot of finding love after loss and grief will always be beautiful to me so I will forever love Caleb and Yanna.
