RIKER’S THE PRICE (Book 7)
Edited by Monique Happy Editorial Services 85,000 words
When one of their newest members – a veritable youngster – leaves the safety of Trinity House and ventures into Santa Fe alone, an act born of survival sets in motion a chain of events, like the butterfly effect, that puts the entire group in the crosshairs of a former mob hitman.
After surviving an initial attack, mostly unscathed, with the madman’s whereabouts unknown and the possibility of another attempt on Trinity not a question of if, but when, the first cold snap of winter opens a window of opportunity that Army veteran Lee Riker and his small band deem impossible to ignore. Having already agreed that circling the wagons and riding out winter in a place totally foreign to them prior to the zombie apocalypse is a much better proposition than putting even one of their own in harm’s way, the sudden revelation that near-freezing temperatures render the zombie scourge dormant makes a resupply trip into the city worth the risk of crossing paths with their nemesis.
Caught downtown between warring factions of America’s fractured military, Riker and his fellows quickly learn that the hitman is indeed alive and will stop at nothing to get the pound of flesh he feels is owed to him.
Yet another bold attack leaves the group reeling, the deadly toll nearly incomprehensible to those left to pick up the pieces. Riker receives an ultimatum to bring the newcomer to a meeting at a time and place of the killer’s choosing.
Will Riker comply with the demand and risk sacrificing himself and the teenager so that others may live?
Or will he find a way to turn the tables on the aggressor and live to see another day?
In the end, who will ultimately pay the price — the hunter or the hunted?
After the attack on Trinity House and not knowing if the attacker survived, they find out Paul has after another crushing attack. Paul is seeking revenge on the group after the murder that was totally justified of his equally sick and evil sister Melinda by a member of their group. The zombies are pretty well harmless as the cold weather sets in so it's easier to do supply runs. Meanwhile there are two warring military units to be leery of. What follows is a game of cat and mouse with deadly consequences. What will the cost be and how will the survivors cope with the losses?
It had been a while since I read book 6 in this series so I went back a re-read it. Once I started The Price, I could barely put it down. It had me holding my breath at times. I don't want my review to be a spoiler so without giving anything away, the loss was inevitable. Thank you Shawn for another nail bitter.
