Shadowing Mace

Rate this book
With his brother away at a conference, alpha wolf shifter Shadow finds himself paired with IT analyst Mace, the one man he can't stand. Stuck with the partnership due to his pack leader's order, Shadow can only count down the days until his life returns to normal. He's a loner. Period. No matter how much his inner beast protests.

Mace isn't thrilled either, but can't resist the temptation to push all the surly alpha's buttons, even as he fantasizes about what could be. Flirting with danger, he's determined to make the best of the situation, if he can only get Shadow to give in to both their desires.

Unfortunately, a twisted revenge-seeker has other plans. A series of events rocks the entire pack, leaving innocent people hurt and fear running rampant. Both men are thrust into the chaos, working tirelessly to track down the culprit before someone winds up dead. The pressure of trying to stay a jump ahead, with absolutely no clues, pushes them to the brink. Add in a burning hunger for each other, and their world begins to crumble around them. With no other choice, they have to trust and depend on one another in order to have a chance at solving the mystery and saving lives.

I'm dreadfully behind on my reviews so I'm going to do a real quick one here while it's still fresh.

This wasn't the hot shifter book I was looking for. For the first 90% of the book I was bitching it out in my head at how it portrayed both MCs as mindless sex machines. Yes, there was heat, but no emotion. None. Then for the last 10% of the book, I was bitching it out for being too emotional and entirely too sappy. The change in emotion was too quick to resonate as real for me. And the side storyline of a shifter out for revenge seemed slapped together, just an excuse to feature these boy fighting with one another.

Enemies to lovers is one of my hot buttons. But not here.

I cannot recommend this one. It just didn't do a thing for me. Bummer.

Just ugh. I wanted some hot BDSM shifter sex with a solid mystery and I’ve no clue what I got instead. Some rote, mindless story that had no characterization, nothing interesting in the mystery portion and some really wooden writing. I was bored with the characters almost immediately. They were antagonistic for reasons unknown and then halfway through they decide to have a lot of sex and suddenly be in love. I never got a feel for either character and they came across as stale, uninteresting, and manic. First they were grumbling at each other to extremes then in love to extremes. Neither pole hit the right note and both felt exaggerated beyond enjoyment.

Then the mystery is boring and stupid, which is not helped by the writing. The dialogue is stilted and awkward with a lot of repetitive phrases. The men are supposedly investigating deadly accidents happening within the pack but they alternate between being suspicious and utterly ignorant. An out of the blue rockslide makes them curious but they don’t really think it was anything other than an accident. Then why are they suspicious? There’s no real justification for their actions and thoughts and the story is completely without nuance or subtly. It’s very blunt, in your face and the story walks the reader through every emotion and action. I simply didn’t care about the characters, their quasi D/s sex which mostly was short, emotionless statements about positioning before the deep supposedly emotional love making.

Let’s just leave it at this didn’t work for me. I started skimming about a third of the way in to see if it got better so I don’t feel right writing a full review. I’m sure I missed several parts, I read the final few chapters and feel safe in saying it doesn’t get better sadly.

Mace is re-assigned to work with Shadow on security. Shadow is cranky and surly and of course immediately attracted to Mace.
Mace has been crushing on Shadow for awhile, but has a hard time breaking through his tough outer shell to the ooey gooey center he thinks is hiding inside.
At first there is a lot of sexual tension and flirting and fighting – Shadow can be a real son-of-a-bitch – but when Mace finally pushes Shadow over the edge – watch out! The passion between these guys is hot!
There is a mystery to be solved (this is the weakest part of this story) and Shadow takes out his frustration on the men he works with and Mace, but… Mace calls him on his crap and eventually they solve the case.
I was so pleased to see that this book felt much more like the first book I had read by Cheyenne Meadows, Feline Persuasion, and not much like the last book I had read by her, Friends with Benefits.
This book was full of sultry, sweaty sexual tension between two alpha males and they were smokin’ hot!
I loved how Shadow kept “marking” Mace and making him “his” without coming out and saying it. The emotions between the two guys was sweet but felt appropriate, too.

Shadow and Mace have a very rough and tumble alpha male type of relationship and it was super hot. Shadow is an alpha wolf and Mace is a beta, but Mace has no problem at all riling Shadow up. It was entertaining and very sexy. Shadow and Mace are initially adversarial and watching them learn to work together and then eventually come together was fun and I found that I didn’t want to put the book down.

I love shifter books and even though the “mine” and “fated mates” thing has it’s place, I was glad that wasn’t the case here. Mace and Shadow were meant for each other, but they didn’t know it and had to work hard to figure it out for themselves.

The sex was off the charts…and sex doesn’t usually sell a book for me, but this was so well written that I needed to add it to my review. So, if you are looking for a fun, sexy and fast-paced shifter book then I highly recommend Shadowing Mace. Enjoy

4 star review by Cindy

Shifter stories are my absolute favorites. I probably read more of them than any other genre, so I’m always happy when I’m asked to review a new one.

Shadow is a man used to having things his way, so when the pack Alpha partner’s him with the man who knows just how to push his buttons, he can’t help but think that it’s going to be pure hell.

Mace is just as annoyed, but also admits that his fascination with the other wolf is as strong as his irritation.

Watching these two wolves circle around each other is humorous and hot, and I enjoyed the banter between them immensely. Right from the beginning of their unlikely partnership, they work together seamlessly and it isn’t long before Mace has some epiphanies of his own about the life that Shadow must lead, being in charge of the packs safety.

It was interesting to watch as their relationship evolved. It started off as sex, but it quickly becomes apparent that they are destined for more. As they investigate the danger that seems to be building within their pack, they go from mutual irritants to trusted partners…to something that catches them by surprise, even though it shouldn’t.

It’s interesting that the mystery in the story isn’t really what the story is about. It’s about the developing relationship between Shadow and Mace, and the tragedies striking their town is really just a small backdrop to watch them move together.

The sex is incredibly hot and well written and Shadow and Mace are characters that are easy to connect with right from the beginning. I was never put off by Shadow’s reserve or Mace’s arrogance because the author made it clear that there was so much more to them than what we get to see at first.

The side characters in this book are really non-existent. They pop up quickly to move the plot along and that’s about it. I would have also liked the anticipation to build a little more before getting to the obvious climax (no pun intended) but all in all, there isn’t too much to complain about. I always want more to a story because I’m greedy and not always because it needs it…I just want it.

I will be going and checking out Cheyenne Meadow’s other stories. I like her writing style and enjoyed the ride she took me on immensely. If you like big, well-matched men (and shifters) who are smart, funny and sometimes unexpectedly tender, you will love this story.

Update - I still liked it the second time but noticed a few irregularities. One that stood out - if they can clothe themselves by magic, why worry about clothes being ruined and not repairable?
This doesn't really affect the story but it stood out.

Shadowing Mace is a little different than the typical shifter novella. It was an entertaining short read with no obvious editing flaws, which is a huge plus these days.

There is no fated mate insta-love, in fact Shadow is quite certain he hates Mace at first. However this loathing quickly turns to lust. I liked how the two of them interacted and how Mace balanced out Shadow. Mace was big and brash and could stand up to Shadow’s temper and grumpiness.

The love scenes were raw and sexy (if you can get by the occasional cheesy line) with plenty of them. Unfortunately there is almost too much sex. I kept expecting the book to wrap up and end, and there was another love scene.

The mystery was definitely just a background and not wholly present. The secondary characters are also not strongly present; just there long enough to deliver their lines.

If you are looking for a good mystery, pass this by. If you are looking for heat and knotting in a book, with big strong guys together, this one’s for you!

When Mace's brother goes out of town, he is paired with IT guy Shadow as his assistant by his father. Mace is not happy, he finds Shadow annoying and they seem to always be at each other's throats. Although Shadow is happy enough, he seems to find their battles amusing and finds Mace hot so why not. There is lots of sniping and yipping at each other as Mace denies any attraction, and when it appears someone is attacking town members at random, Mace's surliness reaches critical mass. But of course a good sex session helps.

I'm not such a fan of two manly tops who kind of battle it out for supremacy in the bedroom. I guess Shadow knows Mace will be the next Alpha so not much of a choice as to who will bottom but he gets off on pushing Mace's buttons. Making something angry and finding it amusing stresses me out. That is a personal thing. I get very anxious around angry people and purposely making someone angry baffles me, so some of their behaviour I found made me anxious just reading it, thus it was less enjoyable.

Once they settled down and it takes Mace forever to realize that he's mating with Shadow, it was better for me and they were working towards finding whoever was terrorizing the town rather than just sniping at each other. So depends what your into. Those who like two more alpha characters and a bit of a more caustic start to a relationship may like this a lot more than I did, and that's purely my personal tastes.

Reviewed for The Novel Approach.

Finally, a book about wolf shifters who act like a pack with traditional pack rolls in place: alpha, beta, omega. I was so excited to start this book, as it jumps right into the story with Shadow being less than thrilled with his new partner, Mace, after his brother, Ian, is called away on assignment. What follows is a rollercoaster ride of beta wolf Mace pushing all of alpha (and pack leader’s son) Shadow’s buttons.

I loved the dynamics between Shadow and Mace. Mace is aware of his status as a beta wolf, and the very real danger pushing Shadow too far poses, but he treads that line carefully for the good of his alpha. He is well aware of the pressure Shadow faces as not only an alpha but the son of the pack’s leader, and as such, he does what any caring mate would do. Even if they aren’t mates.

Pack politics play a large roll in this book as well. Not only is it deer hunting season for the humans, but someone, or something, is threatening the pack, and it’s up to Shadow and Mace to figure out who or what is causing all of the chaos. They work together in increasingly close quarters to solve the crisis, but it’s the close quarters that eventually drives them together rather than apart.

The sex in this book is steamy. While not BDSM, there is a level of dominance and submission fitting with the wolf politics. Shadow and Mace also have some wolf-like physiology concerning their, ahem, lower parts, that make their coupling not only more violent, in a sense, but more intimate as well. Not going to lie, but I did the research and found out that the knot is in fact a real thing dogs—and wolves—have while mating. So, score one for the author on including that. It made the story that much more real for me somehow.

I highly recommend this shifter book to any fan of the genre, or even non-fans who are looking to get into it. You’ll be hard-pressed not to enjoy Mace and Shadow and might, perhaps, like me, wonder if the author will be releasing another book with these two heroes.

Review can be read at It's About The Book

Shadow doesn’t want to work with Mace, but it’s out of his control. What his father decrees his father gets. A lot of stuff needs to get done, luckily, Mace is actually competent even if he is infuriating and sexy as well as infuriatingly sexy. Mace likes that he gets to work with Shadow, but the guy is pretty gruff and difficult. Mace knows there is a huge amount of unrequited sexual attraction between the two of them, but Shadow has to at least accept the moves that Mace makes if anything is going to happen. A series of accidents begin to happen across the pack controlled lands. Technically they could be purely accidental, but it’s all beginning to look orchestrated. As they investigate the accidents, Mace is finally able to see what makes Shadow tick, and he knows exactly what Shadow needs. Shadow finally relaxes enough to accept what Mace is offering. Then one of the accidents hits closer to home than is comfortable for either Shadow or Mace.

Shadow is hangry. Seriously, so much of this plot would have vanished if the guy had a sandwich in the first chapter. Much of Shadow’s character was built upon hunger, stress, and his need to take care of the people in the pack who looked up to him for leadership and protection. It did provide some interesting contrast for the motivations of the saboteur, but a lot of the relationship dynamics and Shadow’s behaviors really just needed to be rectified with food.

There was a lot more sex in this book than I expected. Which isn’t bad, but I didn’t expect it. It’s definitely more about enemies becoming lovers than the mystery of who is triggering potentially fatal accidents. Overall this book was quick read with lots of shifter dynamics and sex.

Shadowing Mace by Cheyenne Meadows
3.5 stars
M/M Shifter, mystery
I was given this book for an honest review by Inked Rainbow Reads.

Shadow is a slightly off putting, very stern character who really dislikes Mace, the less stern, but no less annoying IT guru.

The two of them have a slightly volatile start - Mace likes to push Shadow's buttons and get a rise out of him, while Shadow would just rather get on his way.

The beginning of the story is more about animosity and trying to stave off their desire for each other, they work tirelessly while trying to figure out who is behind the attacks on fellow pack members. But I did like the softer side of Shadow and how Mace was able to see that despite his outward demeanor, Shadow did need someone to look out for him too.

So, while this book was not all about relationships, love and hot sex (but don't worry, there is some of that), it was mainly about finding someone who will look after you - make sure that you are taken care of.

The mystery in this story is somewhat unfinished for me. While they figure it out, it seemed rushed. The ending of the story is much sappier than I was expecting as well. I think it would have flowed better if there had been less of an abrupt change from hating to creating a relationship.

Being new to the shifter genre I had no expectations going in.

Shadow is a burley alpha with a lot on his mind, and when his brother leaves him with even more responsibility in hunting season—the most stressful season of all—his father pairs him with a beta shifter with the ability to push every of the stressed out alpha’s buttons!
The beta, Mace, is fearless, though, and he keeps at it to dig under the skin of a man he has been in love with for quite some time. Whatever it takes, he will get through to Shadow and offer up the vent, the brooding alpha so obviously needs.
Just how much Shadow needs Mace to help him becomes obvious once someone decides to take out his aggressions on the packs members.

Other than what begins as a dangerous (to Mace) flirt, this story is steamy and raw! Nothing is spared when these two finally let their passion hit the sheets, and one could say that the story kind of shifts its focus from a mystery plot to untamed sex. If you like that, this book is for you. If you expect focus to stay on the mystery, then no.

As stated, I went in not expecting anything, so I just sat back and enjoyed the ride, but I would have liked a finish or a more well-planned finish up of the case that Shadow and Mace work.

Shadowing Mace by Cheyenne Meadows (MM/Shifter/Romance)

A copy of this book was provided to me by Inked Rainbow Reads in exchange for an honest review.

***3 STARS***

Not my favorite shifter story, but it's not the worse. I like the pack structure, and I liked Mace and Shadow...sort of. There was a lot of stream in this book, lots of naughty bits, but I felt no connection towards the characters in the romance department. Maybe at the end, but by that time it seemed forced, thus too late to change my mind.

Shadow has to work with Mace, who he dislikes, but he has no choice in the matter. Mace is hot for Shadow, but he can see the guy doesn't like him, which makes him wanna tease him more. I liked Mace's personality, but Shadow was too broody for me. Two characters can be "hot" together, but sometimes as the reader, I wish they fell for someone else.

Also, this was tagged as BDSM...but it's not. Not really. There's elements of it, but not enough to claim that this is a BDSM book.

So I have to say I loved the dialogue between these two shifter mates. They both were just so snarky I loved it!
So Mace has been assigned to work with Shadow who is Alpha while Mace is a Beta. These two men have never gotten along before so you knew it was just a matter of time before they both ignited.
Well someone is out to hurt pack members and it is up to Shadow and Mace to figure out who is behind everything happening and stop this person.
The steam in this book was off the charts hot! You also get action and angst with this book too.
I loved the way this author wrote this shifters and these characters!

All together I really loved this book!
I would recommend this book!

This is harsh but I am glad I could borrow this from the library. I would have been really disappointed had I paid to read it. The book outline sounded good and I loved the cover. The reality of the book was totally different and very disappointing. Other than the sex scenes this book fell flat.

Not really what I was expecting. The characters were ok and the writing good if predictable. I enjoyed the story but didn't feel the characters which left the story a bit dull. I just didn't understand why the two acted like they did. It seemed a bit too formulaic to really interest me.

I always enjoy Ms Meadows' strong, well-rounded, imperfect characters, and this story was no different. Definitely recommended for a good read.

And I loved how she explained 'mates' as occurring andhow it was treated by wolf shifter society.

This book was super enjoyable - Great characters, intense sexual tension, interesting shifter politics but where it lost a final star for me was its lack of a believable villain.

I still highly recommend it - the interaction between the two MCs is classic and I loved the snark and the sex :)
