There are stories that don't attempt to reinvent a well-known genre, but rather remind us why certain patterns have stood the test of time. The Beast from the North falls into this category. It's a comic that consciously utilizes classic elements of heroic fantasy .

Oscar Martin is acutely aware of the legacy he's drawing on. He doesn't pretend to redefine the barbarian tale. Instead, he takes the genre's most iconic ingredients and crafts them into a well-functioning adventure. There's brutality, magic, intrigue, and, of course, a protagonist who's far more comfortable with a sword in his hand than engaging in diplomatic conversation.

This album's greatest strength lies in its sense of identity. The Beast from the North knows what it wants to be. This isn't a multi-layered fantasy epic . It's a self-contained story, designed primarily to deliver thrills, spectacular battles, and pure, simple fantasy adventure. And this comic achieves this goal perfectly.

From the very first pages, the atmosphere is palpable, a world where life has little value, and a warrior's reputation often matters more than his true intentions. The city of Hud Hund Engaun is presented as a place fraught with danger, where every smile could signal an attempt at deception, and every promise could end in betrayal.

This environment perfectly suits the protagonist. A man who doesn't seek lofty ideals or set out to save the world. His motivations are much simpler. He wants money, adventure, and the opportunity to live by his own rules. At the same time, this simplicity is precisely what makes the character so compelling.

Oscar Martin moves the story along at a brisk pace. There are no long lulls or extended set pieces that distract from the main story. The protagonist quickly finds himself at the center of the conflict, and new obstacles arise regularly.

The comic is a bit like a classic role-playing game session. The hero enters a new location, acquires a quest, discovers new threats, and must overcome increasingly difficult enemies. There's something very familiar about it, yet incredibly enjoyable.

The author clearly understands that this type of story requires a proper rhythm. The plot shouldn't be overcomplicated, as this would destroy the story's adventurous nature . The Beast from the North prioritizes dynamics above all else.

That doesn't mean the script is devoid of surprises, however. Throughout the book, there are several changes of direction and moments that reveal that things aren't always as initially suggested. These aren't genre-bending twists, but they're enough to maintain interest.

Heroes
The central figure, of course, remains the warrior from the north . This is a hero whose character isn't based on long monologues or complex dilemmas. His personality is built through actions.

He's a fierce, proud man, often driven by instinct. At the same time, the author shows that behind his immense physical strength lies experience and intelligence. He's not a mindless fighting machine. He can observe the situation and exploit his opponents' mistakes.

The contrast between the hero and the townspeople also works well. While local leaders play complex political games, rife with lies and manipulation, the warrior operates according to his own simple rules.

Secondary characters serve primarily as elements of the larger adventure. Not every one of them possesses immense psychological depth, but most serve their purpose well. Gang leaders, guards, enemies, and mysterious figures connected to magic provide a fitting backdrop for the main character....
