The Reign of Fire

Rate this book
In the aftermath of the Crowning Ceremony, the Achilles Heel and the Crown are no longer clashing in shadows or pulling strings behind Trials. The war for the fate of the magical world is finally out in the open.

Charlie didn’t know what she was getting into when she was forced to fight for the Heel. Nor did she want to fight anyone. But she’s not the same person she was when she first stepped into The Magisterium of Magic. Not after everything that’s happened, after everything she’s done.
Trapped between two kings, nothing is simple; nothing is black and white.

Lawrence Hart has been preparing for this war for decades. And now everything is playing out just how he wants. Eden is manifesting before him. If only he could crush the Heel, and then his plans would be realized.
Always two moves ahead, he might be able to do just that.

Michael Kale, now the king he never wanted to be, shoulders the responsibility of all the Regulars and low status Users he’s protecting. Long has he wanted revenge against the man who shattered his family, but now he’s fighting for more.
Backed by the power of other Masters and Royals, the Heel has never been stronger.

But there is a traitor in their midst, with enough power to bring either side to its knees.

Two Harts. Two Kings. One Crown.
In the final installment of The Royal Trilogy, love and loyalties will collide.
Only one will rule.

My breath catches every single time my thumbs hover over the keys on my phone to write this review. How do you review pure emotion? How do you put into words what you feel when all you know is the story reached deep enough to pull tears from your eyes, the words enough to make you feel this unrelenting, never ending ache in your chest. Nothing I could possibly ever type or put into words here can even come close to wrapping up how deeply in love I am with this series.

These characters have definitely been through it. The character arcs alone from the first book until now are a night and day difference. Going through devastation, let alone war really changes you. Hardens you. And it definitely hardened these characters. It makes it that much more painful to know where they began, what they’ve gone through, and where they are now. They’ve really had to fight for basically anything and everything. For love, for justice, for each other, for trust, and for forgiveness. The plot twists kept a knot in my stomach and my jaw on the floor. Ugh. the tension and slow burn is on a different plane 😫

Literally the plot to this story couldn’t possibly be more perfect.
I love these characters so much and i’m so happy to have been introduced to this series! One of my favorite reads this year for sure. Actually heartbroken to leave this world behind, but best believe i’ll be first in line to see what’s next!

A beautiful, heartbreaking, bittersweet conclusion to a fantastic trilogy.

Book one captured my attention, book two captured my heart and book three captured my soul.

I cried, I stayed up way too late (or early depending on perspective), and I raged alongside these characters. So many emotions accompanied every twist and turn.

I love this story.

Wow! The author really stuck the landing with this trilogy! I loved it. I haven’t read a series with more diabolical plot twists since Jay Kristoff’s Empire of the Vampire trilogy. These are all now available on KU, and I highly recommend them if you’re looking for a great, mature, (NO SPICE) enemies to lovers, found family, dark academia, emotional roller coaster of a read. This series gets a place on my physical trophy shelf as well as on my kindle.

The last volume The Reign of Fire was a fantastic book. I could not stop reading after I started. The twists and turns were epic.

Fun fact: I read the first two books from the public library and they were so good I bought all three when I preordered the last book.

First of all, I absolutely devoured this book! Hagood did a fantastic job wrapping up the series. I felt like all of my questions were answered, and she delivered a satisfying ending. She truly broke the mold for fantasy, and the plot twists felt genuine and completely unexpected.

The only twist I saw coming was that Michael wasn't actually dead, but that didn't take away from my enjoyment of the story. Overall, this was a fantastic read. I enjoyed it so much that I'm recommending it to literally everyone I know.

If I had one small complaint, it would be that there wasn't enough of Michael's sass in this book, I could have used a lot more of that! Other than that, Hagood left no crumbs. I'm a huge fan and can't wait to read more of her work.

Insane! It’s perfect. I felt all the emotions! Hagoods ability to make you fall in love with seemingly unlovable characters is incredible. It truly is everything you want in a series - love, hate, rage, magic, life, death, laughter, tears - she really takes you on a journey and I HIGHLY recommend you strap in!

I need you to understand something—
the levels of emotion this series put me through?

Unacceptable. Incredible. Life-altering.

I was in a BAD MOOD at my JOB because of the pain, the sorrow, the twists, the longing, the confusion—the feelings. I have sobbed. I have cursed. I have stared at walls thinking about these characters. Charlie. Atlas. Lawrence. Clearence. Mrs. Kale. MICHAEL.

And what’s wild is—I read hundreds of books a year. I don’t get like this anymore. And yet somehow, Michelle Hagood made me feel like that little girl who couldn’t put her favorite book down. I gave this story everything—my time, my sleep, my entire emotional stability—and I would do it again.

Yes, the world is intense.
Yes, it asks a lot from you.
Yes, it’s ambitious.

And I wanted to give it everything in return.

Because this author doesn’t just tell a story—she makes you feel. Deeply. Primal, consuming emotions that don’t let go. I was waking up at 4am to read, sneaking chapters during bathroom breaks—completely hooked.

The world is enthralling. The characters feel real. The journey is relentless.

Michelle Hagood is officially an auto-buy author for me. She destroyed me emotionally, took me on an unforgettable ride, and reminded me what it feels like to truly be obsessed with a book.

I will be thinking about this for a long, long time. And probably will re-read it.

What a conclusion! The final installment of The Royal Trilogy was everything I wanted from a finale, and the plot twist left me both shocked and in awe. I can't wait for everyone to get their hands on this book this summer.

Charlie's journey was incredible. She is such an amazing character so full of heart, spite, and fight. She soars to the top of the list of my favorite characters. But she isn't the only one who shines. Michael's arc throughout the series was perfect. From book one to book three, Michael grows so much and he has found a special place in my heart. But that's just the tip of the iceberg. Hagood creates so many complex, nuanced, lovable characters that stick with you long after you finish reading.

And that's not all. The plot was incredible, the pacing was amazing. This book kept me turning the page, wanting to know what was going to happen next.

I'm devastated that this trilogy has come to an end, but what an end it was. I'm going to miss this world, these characters, and the magic Hagood has created with this series.

I highly recommend this book and this series. Hagood created something so special, and I can't wait to see where she goes next.

WAHHH I CANNOT BELIEVE IT’S ALREADY OVER 😭😭😭😭😭

Literally been so excited for this finale for like years it feels like. On my top 2026 anticipated books and oh boy oh boy did it live up to the hype 😭💯💯💯

I even did a reread in the lead up and all my questions, theories, and notes were absolutely answered. Some theories were so fun to be confirmed and some would have never prepared for me for what was coming.

Did I end up devastated at that point in the book that i put the book down and made an angst spodify playlist to be melodramatic over until i picked myself and the book up and kept going? Perhaps. 😅

Am I devastated I cannot read this again for the first time? Also yes. My comfort is that Michelle’s writing is always easy for me to pick up and read. 🫶🫶🫶👏👏👏

And for the author, thank you for sharing this piece of you with the rest of us. Picture your readers going “wahhhhh” as we read that acknowledgments at the end.

I cannot wait to see what you come out with next. 😭😭🥰🥰🥰🙌🙌🙌🫡🫡🫡🫡

I can’t believe it’s finally finished! I have been in love with this story and these characters for so long, to finally have the conclusion is surreal!! Let me also say absolutely none of what I have to say is meant in a mean way or negative light. I LOVED this series and think Michelle Hagood is a brilliant author.

But I must warn you, it’s going to be a hard read. Let me explain. All the advertising for these books are about feminine rage. They’re regularly described as angry, angrier, and angriest. Man I did NOT listen.
My heart was SHATTERED reading this one. The magic is exhilarating but the consequences are brutal. It’s going to make you filled with rage and disgust and want to pull your hair out. Maybe even consider DNF while you sit there with your heart in pieces.
But don’t give up on Charlie and Michael and their story. When you feel angry, you want to put the book down, don’t feel like you can stomach continuing, do it anyway. Put your trust in the author and KEEP GOING!!! She won’t disappoint you, I promise. Michelle herself must be filled with magic for the way she tells this story.

This series is definitely added to my yearly reread collection. I also HIGHLY recommend the physical books as the covers are gorgeous! I myself have the hard covers of all three books. 10/10 for a debut series.

This is everything a third and final book of a trilogy should be. There’s a plot twist that literally left me breathless—and yet, Hagood did such an incredible job of sprinkling clues throughout the whole trilogy that I wanted to smack myself for not seeing it sooner.

Charlie really shines in this one, and in a way that sticks with you well after you’ve finished the last page.

I have to say—my favorite character arc was Michael’s. To see him come to far, to grow so much, you can’t help but mourn that you won’t get to see him after this.

The action!!! Gahhh. I was white-knuckling it through, and when I reached the finale, I fist pumped as if it was a personal victory. Gonna miss this world, and these characters, so much.

This book, and this trilogy, stick with you long after you’ve read the last page.

This book cemented Hagood as one of my top auto-buy authors, and I can’t wait to see what she does next.

This final book in the Royal Trilogy is everything we needed it to be, and more. While I intended to savor it, I instead tore through it and finished at 1am.

I laughed, I cried, and had heart palpitations for more than one scene. Michelle does a masterful job weaving beautiful descriptions, clever world-building, and realistic character arcs into this book as she holds your fragile heart in her hands. Then, she smashes it into tiny pieces with plot twists that’ll leave you gasping.

But don’t worry, as an artist who is clearly in control of her craft, she won’t just leave you there. Trust her with the culmination of years of planning, writing, and now finally, darlings, releasing this masterpiece into the world.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough—which means if you haven’t read the first two, you need to. Immediately. Then preorder this one so you’re ready for the chaos when it comes out this summer!

Finales are hard. And I was very nervous about this one. I have been open about some of my critiques with Hagood’s writing, and I’ve even told her them.

But O.M.G. !!!

This book took away my ability to do anything other than read it.
Perfect ending!

Pros:
-Charlie is the best! I think about this character in my daily life often. I love her.
-Amazing plot twists and reveals!! Seriously, I did not see that coming.
-Charlie + Michael is so swoon. Perfection.
-It’s obviously a fantasy setting, but the way the characters act is super believable and realistic.
-the family drama is juuuicy

Cons:
-It’s a debut trilogy. So it’s not super polished and some of the writing can be improved.
-There was a major plot point that I just didn’t believe and didn’t make sense to me.

I will promptly be rereading all three books now. Thank you, and goodbye

Now, stop reading my ramblings, and just go buy this book and all the others and read them!

I can’t believe the finale is here, after so many years of being a fan. Every time I pick up one of Michelle’s books, I lose track of where I am and I’m completely enveloped in her world. The Reign of Fire was no exception. When I wasn’t reading, all I could think about was when I’d have time to read again.

The breakneck pace, the plot twists, and the reckless characters kept me up late at night. I’m devastated to say goodbye to these characters; I feel like I’ve grown up with them. However, Michelle created such a fitting conclusion for them that I’m left with no questions and no notes; only satisfaction. What a beautiful end to The Royal Trilogy.

A White-Hot Resolution

I hope the reader is ready for for great dystopian adventure. One with much more anger than they could’ve imagined in the first two books. Our protagonist grows and the layers peel back as we learn more about the history of the Hart family. The war between Lawrence and Michael also finally comes to the dramatic conclusion you’ve been waiting for. But, not without twists, bloodshed, and lots and LOTS of lies. This tale has been an absolutely gripping experience that will keep you on the edge of your seat. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed every page and know you will too.

What a great followup to The Masters Trial! Just when you think you have an idea of what's going on or what's coming next, the storyline takes a hard turn and puts you on your b**t or you find your cheeks covered in tears. The imagery is on point with the previous books along with the the highs and lows that play with your heart. It's definitely something I'll keep - not just because the covers make it a beautiful set - but because I love the story. Charlie and Michael and Atlas and Blake.... they've become friends.

I opened Goodreads for the first time 2 years to leave this review.

This series is my Roman Empire. I can go on and on about well thought out the plot it, how each character makes you feel something, how the slow burn enemies to lovers is the only TRUE slow burn enemies to lovers I have ever read. But in all honesty, readers deserve to experience the wonders of this series in real time with absolutely 0 hints or spoilers.

I loved every second of this book, and I can’t wait to return to this world while I pray Michelle gives us another series to dive into.

I have no words for what this book is. It's not just a 5 star read. True, while reading i had some moments where I was nitpicking things I thought might have been done better, or differently, but the emotional grip this has had on me completely obliterates those fleeting thoughts.
The series is now the very limited amount of books I would spend a lifetime recommending to anyone who gives me the time of day. The physical copies, as soon as they are available, will also be a permanent feature in my home, because I want to re-read them over and over.

Perhaps the first time in the history of ever that the third book in a trilogy was actually the best one. This was tragic and emotional and complex. The series as a whole is a bit rough around the edges. Reads as expected for a self published newer author, but still worth the read because the story is really excellent. I felt the first book reminded me a lot of Harry Potter, but then the twists and turns and trauma and heart break of the feast of the series really showed what makes the story stand out as novel. 5 star story, 3 star writing style (in my personal opinion) for 4 stars total.

My jaw hurts from how many times it hit the floor reading this book.
The Royal Trilogy isn't just one genre, because each book brings us something new. TROF brought more than I was expecting, more than I was hoping, and an amount of craziness that simply could not have been predicted after reading the first two books.

I adore this series. The trilogy is fabulous, and this final book is everything you'll want and need after reading the first two.

This entire trilogy is amazing! Michelle is so skillful at creating her characters, having them grow & giving them depth. The twists & turns are gut wrenching yet powerful. This was my first venture into this genre. I was heart filled & heart broken in each book. I cried through the last 3-5 chapters as I finished the trilogy. I am looking forward to re-reading them but I think I need to recover first. Thank you for a great journey Michelle!

The first book in this series? Amazing
The second book? Somehow better than the first.
This book? Holy crap. So so good.

I'm not sure how Michelle was able to write a book this long without any of the content feeling like useless filler. It was painful to put this book down for silly things like sleep and I absolutely flew through it. I love it. No notes.

WOW. What an ending to this phenomenal series!! I’ve been patiently waiting for the final book in the trilogy and it did not disappoint. I loved the plot twists and all the character growth. Truly did not see some of these twists coming and had my jaw on the floor multiple times. So sad this journey is over but can’t wait to see what this author does next!
