Lovers and Liars #2

The Vampire of Vancouver

Rate this book
An alternate cover edition can be found here and here.

Aphrodite, goddess of love and lust, is not impressed. After giving up her penthouse suite in trendy Manhattan to go monster hunting around the world, she finds herself in a sad hotel room in Vancouver with a decidedly distracted Loki. She hadn't expected this job to be so serious, and her Norse partner isn't exactly bowing to her whims these days. What was the point in coming with him if they weren’t beneath the sheets all hours of the day? It seems like such a waste of sexual compatibility. Humph.

Meanwhile, Loki, Norse trickster, is equally unimpressed. He hadn't thought taking on a beautiful partner would make his work so difficult. Her unfocused energy grates on his nerves, and his lust for her is only surpassed by his desire for more godly power. He will complete this job, whether she likes it or not, and he’ll walk away one step closer to regaining his old abilities. Now, if only he can get his partner to focus on the task at hand, not seduction. Ridiculous woman.

Aphrodite and Loki, an unlikely team if there ever was one, find themselves in the City of Vancouver hunting vampires. The job is pretty straightforward: rescue the damsel, kill the monster. Unfortunately, even the easiest of jobs hardly ever go according to plan.

Liz is a Canadian author who grew up in the Middle East. She has a degree in Bioarchaeology from Western University, and when she isn't writing about her own snarky characters, she is reading about other people’s snarky characters, babying her herb garden, loitering on social media, or taking care of her furbabies.

Liz dabbles in both paranormal and contemporary erotic romance. Her paranormals are usually dark and angsty, and her contemporaries are stress-free smutfests, but you'll find both riddled with feels. Most of all, she loves writing realistic characters in fantastical settings.

4 - Two worlds - the old and the new, mortal and immortal - collided. Stars!

The Vampire of Vancouver picks up Aphrodite and Loki’s story straight after the first book in the series; The Maenad of Manhattan, left off. I really like where Liz Meldon is taking this couple, what with the mix of Gods, Godesses and mortals, the paranormal and its beings are also included in the story as well. It makes for a unique blend of characters all with their own special skills and abilities. The combining with this and the extremely high quality of writing and story-telling offers a really unusual and entertaining mix of action, sexy-times and intrigue.

In Vancouver now and tasked with finding the missing daughter of an affluent couple, Loki and Aphrodite delve into the underworld, where Vampires are commonplace and bloodletting the norm.

On discovering the location of said errant daughter, it turns out that things aren’t all that Loki was initially led to believe, and the original deal struck changes into something new and with the potential to be even more beneficial in Loki’s quest to gain more followers. But as is to be expected, with the higher reward, comes even more risk, something that Loki doesn’t really take into account until it is too late.

Entertaining, fast-paced and really quite different from a lot of the books I read, this author is definitely someone I will be watching for going forward. The adventure moves to Idaho in the next part of the Lovers and Liars series, in The Witches of Westwick College, which is due later in 2015.

This is such a fun and clever series... lots of giggles... I really liked book one, but I liked this second installment even better than the first. Aphrodite cracks me up... Love Goddess aka Vampire killer!
Aphrodite and Loki make a really fun couple as Gods trying to cope with living in modern society. Aphrodite is now a love columnist and Loki is working as a supernatural Private Investigator. Since Gods are no longer worshipped in modern times, they do not have the same powers as they once had. Loki's big plan is to solve crimes for those in need in exchange for loyalty so he can gain back some of his lost powers. Aphrodite, still pretty well known as the goddess of love, isn't as powerful as she used to be but still has more power than Loki. He hates that he needs her but what choice does he have?? They have a very lustful relationship that is also quite entertaining!
This is very well written, definitely entertaining and has me looking forward to the next installment... can' wait to see what kind of trouble these two find next...

I always love the banter in Meldon's books, and these two main characters are especially excellent at it. Because two powerful beings are in charge of this series--Loki and Aphrodite--it was inevitable that their strong personalities would clash at some point. That point is this book, friends.

Loki is focused on the job and the job only, whereas Aphrodite sees the love between their targets. They're both stubborn mules, so you can imagine how well that went down.

And that's before everything escalates.

"You should be frightened," the vampire murmured. His tongue flicked out before running over his sharp canines. "You're mine now."

Book 1, Manhatten, was all about the love and passion between Loki and Aphrodite. Vancouver isn't as steamy and more focused on story rather than smut, but there are still some detailed scenes which aren't suitable for younger readers. So, while I'm going to recommend the hell out of this series, please be aware of the graphic sexual content in Meldon's books.

Aphrodite and Loki are working together, to find a missing girl. But there are other forces at work, and Loki and Aphrodite come face to face with creatures of the night, all the while fighting their obvious need for each other, but neither will admit it.

The second book in The Lovers And Liars series, and its longer than book one,132 pages, taking it up a peg, in my opinon.

Aprodite is still writing lonely heart replies, and Loki is still hunting worshippers to boost his power. They are tasked with find a girl who has run away and become a vampire. Aprodite puts a spanner in the works, and Loki is forced to improvise. I loved that we hear from him this time! He is snarky, and witty, and not at all as I imagined him to be! Why?? I don't know, but I loved hearing from him, even is he is a bit...Godly...sometimes!

Aprodite is beginning to realise she needs him, but is still not admitting it to heself, but her true feeling come to the fore when she has to look after Loki.

There is something else going on, now too. The last bit made them both think, me too, and its obvious that tere are others, maybe like them, maybe against them, in the world. I will certainly keep following these two Old World Gods, and see what mischief they get up to next.

I cant quite stretch to 5 stars, but 4.75 is still a darn good score :-)

Thank you, to Ms Meldon for my copy.

Yay! So I had been excited to read this story but hadn't had the time until now to read it. I had read and reviewed the first book in this series, Maenad in Manhattan and absolutely loved it! The writing is still as lovely as always and the pages flew by as I read. No worries about this being a slow read despite it being longer than the previous book.

I still loved this book, almost as much as the first one but just in a slightly different way. This time Loki and Aphrodite are in Vancouver which is unknown territory for me since I've never been to Canada. Ms. Meldon does a good job immersing the reader into the world so I had no problems visualizing the location despite having never visited there.

I enjoyed seeing Loki and Aphrodite be more fleshed out in this book. We get to see their insecurities and flaws more in this book than the previous. It's was a double edged sword for me, while I enjoyed seeing that develop, I actually began to dislike Loki a bit while it endeared me to Aphrodite. Perhaps, it's the stubbornness of Loki that I dislike or the way he sort of looks down on Aphrodite but I hope to see that rectified later in the series. I do believe that he'll change in the end but it's going to be a slow transition. I hope to see some growth with Aphrodite as well.

I love that Meldon makes this story a little more plot/story driven than the first story. The first story had a story line too but it wasn't as focused on plot so much as lovemaking. We don't get as much of the lovemaking in this second book. Instead we get to see the gods interact more with humans and the regular world, of course, with the addition of vampires.

I did notice a slight lack of interest for me while reading this story. It's probably just me but I didn't feel as excited as I read this story in comparison to the first. It might have been because Aphrodite wasn't as proactive or my indifferent feeling towards Loki made me less interested. Either way, there's not as much spark of interest in there as the first book but I still had no problems reading through it.

The book is well written and fast paced and if you liked the first one I believe you'll enjoy this book too. It's a nicely written sequel to the first book of the series and you'll get to see the gods interact with modern humans which is always fun to see. I think there is an over-arcing story line in this series but I'm not quite sure what it is yet but what I'd love to see is more interactions with some Gods.

3.6 out of 5 rating for me!

I voluntarily reviewed an advance copy
Zeus help us! Now we are talking about more than Pantheons and some crazy chick. The intrigue is deeper, Vampires and new (or very old forgotten) powers are becoming a tangible reality. What appeared first as an easy job soon reveals deathly traps even for the Trickster. And while Loki runs after new adepts, Aphrodite is reminded of her own affinity (not pink and frills apparently).
I loved how Loki rage looked like a man-child tantrum in the eyes of the goddess. And how despite all she keep searching for more passion. And I’d say yes! Go for it Aphrodite!

I was intrigued when I read the synopsis of this story. I love reading stories about different mythologies and seeing those characters brought into the modern world is something that will always snag my attention. If you haven’t read The Maenad of Manhattan, I would suggest you do that before diving into The Vampire of Vancouver. It explains a lot about how Loki and Aphrodite met, what their lives were like before meeting, and how they decided to team up. It adds some good back story to who they are and how they live in the modern world.
Loki and Aphrodite don’t seem like a team that should work but they do. First off they are gods in a modern world in which their kind is fading and forgotten. Aphrodite is a strong, sensual woman that was fascinating to read about. I felt like she encompassed so much of the feminine spirit yet she was able to kick a$$ when it was needed. She is strong and confident yet feminine and frilly. One minute she is worrying about her nails, then the next she is using her sexual prowess on Loki, and then she is fighting vampires. I loved seeing her as more than what society has deluded her to be. Loki was fascinating and I loved how he was what you think and what you didn’t. For those who do not know his whole story, you see more of his past grievances and his return to the respectable graces of the Aesir, the Norse gods pantheon. He is trickster yet so much more. He is cunning, handsome, full of life and energy, and above all very focused on what he wants- whether that is Aphrodite or to finish a mission and gather worshipers.
When you put these two together, it works really well. There are two strong deities that are fighting for control and watching them interact is wonderful. Their banter is hilarious and their woes are sad. They both see the world in such different ways that the reader is able to see things in so many different lights. Their connection is on a whole other level and their chemistry is off the charts. They seem to need each other, whether they will openly admit it or not. Their different world views and ideologies keep things lively and interesting. You never really know what is going to happen with them.
The mission Loki and Aphrodite are on is exciting and takes them into the world of vampires. This storyline adds a kick of adrenaline and another beautiful love story to the mix. I loved seeing glimpses into how the vampire world interacted with the deities of old. Questions arise from their adventures that cause you to wonder what is going on behind the scenes. I am excited to see where this mysterious thread of the story leads in the future.
The Vampire of Vancouver shines a different light on what we know from stories of old- bringing knowledge of the old gods into the present and adding the supernatural creatures we are all familiar with. This story is hot, sexy, exciting, funny, and heartfelt. There are so many things to enjoy and experience in this book.

I won't ever rate my own work, but I'll definitely leave a little blurb about what it was like writing it!

I had an amazing time writing the second book in the series. It was a time for me to really explore these two familiar characters, and try to decide what will make them different from what readers expect of them, yet still keep them Aphrodite and Loki.

All I can say is that my homegirl Aphrodite went from my least favourite Greek goddess to my most over the course of reading about her and crafting her to fit in this series. She can be fickle and a little bratty, but she sticks up for people in this book who others dismiss. She won't rub everyone the right way all the time, but that makes her endearing to me.

I had a stellar time writing Loki too. I've spent a few years writing Loki in fanfiction (where my interest in him began), and I knew I had to differentiate him somehow. He isn't Marvel-Loki... He's Lovers and Liars Old World-y God-Loki. He's got that Viking influence, that trickster persona, but now it's sobered because of the situation he finds himself in. I know a lot of readers were really excited to read something from his POV, so I hope he met their expectations. There's a lot more POVs to come from him in the upcoming books, because Loki angst is best angst!

This book is basically double the length of the last one, and that was something I knew I wanted as soon as I started writing it. Maenad, in a lot of ways, was there to test the waters, and once I knew there were readers genuinely interested in Loki and Aphrodite's story, I felt I could push forward and expand.

So, here's to you guys! I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it, and I'll see you all again in the third book later this year (hopefully).

This book ticks all the boxes for me. I’m not going to give a plot rundown – it’s all there in the blurb, but suffice to stay Loki is still on the hunt for worshippers and Aphrodite is still helping him. That alone, is an excellent part of the plot. Loki’s search means we get to explore different cities. Manhattan, Vancouver and I can’t wait for Idaho.

Aphrodite is a great female character. Snarky, intelligent and tough, she’s what fiction needs. There is no damsel in distress and, for me, this sits well. Come on – why must the female always need rescuing? There is a great point in the book that tips that on its head and it’s so refreshing.

Loki is so fun. He’s clever, strong and so funny. Both his dialogue and inner thoughts are chock full of wit and scorn.

I love the interaction between the two and I must point out that the slow bloom of their relationship is both interesting and satisfying to read. Both have massive egos – well they are Gods – and I think that both care more for each other than they let on. Though I get the feeling Loki’s feelings are a little stronger – I dunno, but it has me guessing. Their individual personalities are well crafted, believable, and consistent.

There are some steamy scenes in the book, but they take a back seat to the plot, as they should. The development of the story was well thought out, the description vivid, and the scenes maintained an easy flow. Also, just have to say that I love the way each story begins and ends with Aphrodite’s column, it’s a nice and clever touch.

I can’t wait to read the next in the series, I am well and truly hooked.

The Vampire of Vancouver is the second book in the Lovers & Liars series by Liz Meldon. Loki and Aphrodite are back, ridding the world of troublesome immortals for the Humans money and worship. Staying in a not so fancy hotel in Vancouver hunting vampires is not what Aphrodite had in mind when she accepted Loki's offer, and dealing with a softhearted woman who seems to be making this job harder than it should be is not keeping Loki in a good mood. With their two totally different attitudes and views on life can they work together or will this new mission push them apart?

This book was just as good as the first and kept me glued from the beginning. I love how these two clash yet work so well together to make a funny, adventurous and amazingly sexy read. The sex scenes themselves will keep you coming back for more. They aren't the same thing over and over, there's always something different and I haven't yet gotten bored with them like I can so easily do. The attitudes these two have is funny and keeps the book lighthearted even in the middle of a problem. Liz is doing a great job so far with this series, such great writing. My only issues right now are that I have to wait so long for the next book and that I dont have a Loki... I want a Loki please.

Before reading The Vampire Of Vancouver, please make sure you read The Maenad Of Manhattan, you will get a better idea of Loki and Aphrodite’s relationship and how it began.

I love all things mythological and paranormal, combine the two and I am one happy reader to put it lightly. Add in a little humor, some hot sex scenes and a little drama and suspense and I am an even happier reader. The Vampire Of Vancouver has all those things and more. I kept seeing the first book on my Facebook feeds or if I was searching for other books it would pop up and had wanted to check it out, so when this tour became available I jumped as soon as I saw it and signed up. I will admit it has it’s cheesy moments but I really did like not just this book but the first one as well. Loki is the perfect amount of smart ass stubborn male to Aphrodite’s sometimes flighty but hilarious female.

I really am curious to see what will happen next for Loki and Aphrodite, I have a feeling that Loki may be holding back his feelings and if he is I want to see this god be knocked on his divine ass. Liz Meldon has written a funny series that I think most readers will enjoy, I know I did.

This is the second book in the Lovers and Liars series and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Aphrodite and Loki are headed to Vancouver to locate the missing daughter of an affluent couple. Aphrodite is not happy with the hotel chosen by Loki or about the train journey she had to endure. In this book we get too see Loki's point of view which was a treat. He is strong, cunning, persuasive and stubborn in his pursuit of his goals. He is irritated when Aphrodite interferes but ends up with a better deal on his hands. The characters of both Aphrodite and Loki were developed well and added layers to the story. Aphrodite is strong, snarky feminine and can hold her own against Loki. Loki is a man of many moods who had not expected Aphrodite to be such a huge distraction. They have different ideologies, beliefs and are continuously trying to gain the upper hand in their volatile relationship. Both of them need each other and are not ready to accept that. The addition of vampires to this book added an element of danger and there was a hint of something bigger going on. This book is perfect for anyone who enjoys mythological or paranormal books.

Aphrodite and Loki returns once again on another case this time in Vancouver.

Aphrodite finds herself in a sad hotel room in Vancouver with Loki hunting monsters who is distracted. She is not happy giving up her penthouse apartment in Manhattan and did not expect to take this job as serious. She did not expect to be ignored or she would not have come along, figuring their sexual chemistry would be played out in the bedroom.

Loki did not realize that have a beautiful partner would be a major distraction from getting his work done. Finding himself getting irritated by her and his lust for her is only second for his desire for godly powers.

When the unlikely duo finds themselves hunting vampires which should be easy case but nothing is ever easy nor black and white. As they hunt down the vampires, one spiked drink turns into a kidnapping of the wrong person. Will they be able to save the kidnapped person and make it out without injuries?

Can these two ever find a way to be together without wanting to be the one in control? Their chemistry keeps getting better together as we looking forward to see who else they will meet.

I loved this book tremendously. It was chock-full of my favorite things: fantastical creatures, romance, really descriptive action, and some tasteful sensual scenes.

Meldon is very skilled with words; her descriptions of both Vancouver and Aphrodite's growing feelings for Loki really painted a real picture (and made me want to move to the beautiful city immediately!).

I enjoyed how the two vampire lovers were women; that was a nice touch. Meldon is not afraid of a bit of gore and violence either, which kept the storyline moving very quickly. There was a moment during a particularly gruesome beheading when I had to take a moment of pause; Meldon is very gifted with her descriptions and it was very realistic. Just a "warning" for those wary of a bit of violence/intimate scenes.

When I finished, I actually felt SAD that it was over. This is incredibly rare for me. Five stars, loved it, and can't wait to read book three.

This book was just as good as book one in the lovers and liars series. The author has a way of writing that leaves you craving more. I love the witty edgy main characters. In this book Aphrodite and Loki are in Vancouver on a job, that job is to find a newly turned vampire and return her home to her parents, along with the head of the woman who sired her. Needless to say thier mission doesn't go quite as smoothly as it should. I don't want to give anything away so all I can say is read it and find out for yourself what these two dieties are in store for. This book is thrilling and enthralling with a very steamy sex scene and I loved every chapter of it.

A great sequel. I'm beginning to get very attached to these characters. Aphrodite, the Greek Goddess, is still writing her love advice column for a Manhatten magazine but is now doing so on the road with Loki, the Norse God. Loki is a, sort of, private detective who takes on jobs not only for the money but for the worship that he also demands in payment from his clients. As we all know God's need followers and worshippers to keep their powers! These two are great together. The humour works well and the developing relationship is nice to follow.

There is a little more intrigue and suspense in this book which was good. What was also great was that it was longer than the first book so better to get involved in.

I can't wait for part 3.

I give this book a 5 on creativity because it was my first time seeing well known characters in this such a way. The two main characters are Loki and Aphrodite however the author puts her own spin on things. My overall opinion was that I personally didn't enjoy how Loki's character was written even though I did enjoy his interactions with Aphrodite. I also liked that the Aphrodite was a strong character and not weak. Overall I give the book a 3.5. I should also mention that although this book is a little over 100 pages it is a complete storyline ad not a cliff hanger all though I can see a from the set up their is another future.

I love this series. The first book was a quick read but interesting. It certainly hooked me. I couldn't wait to read this one. I was no disappointed. I feel that it was a little better than the first book. I felt the characters were developed a bit more. You see more of Loki and Aphrodite and I loved it. I enjoy the way the story flows and the interesting take on the Gods and paranormal creatures. This book is surprisingly sexy, which you wouldn't guess from the cover! Not that the cover is bad, I think it's well done. But the surprise of a sexy well written story proves you can't judge a book by it's cover! This is a book I certainly had fun reading.

Liz Meldon just brings all of the worlds together into one place. We've got Norse mythology, Greek mythology, vampires... all sorts of paranormal happenings all in one cover. I love the whole big melting pot of fiction.

Loki and Aphrodite are so fun together. They both have the huge egos of Gods... but when you get in their heads they're really just as self-conscious and anxious over what others think of them as everyone else. They like each other... but worry that they don't really like each other. They think they're satisfying each other... but they question if they other is really just faking it. Neither wants to admit that they actually like being together for fear that the other will just laugh at them.

Can't wait to see what job they take on next (in Idaho? what?).

Author Liz Meldon nails clever and witty dialog in Vampire of Vancouver, this new adult follow up to Maenad of Manhattan. She expertly weaves mythology against a modern backdrop. It's polished, irresistible, and dangerous. Also note, definitely for a mature audience. Aphrodite and Loki are well developed and unlikely allies who are like fire and water, but lovable and adorable in their own way. The drama and conflict is intense as gods, monsters, and mortals push and pull between the old world and the new. VoV is fast paced, well written- an excellent blend of paranormal, fantasy, and romance. Don't want to leave any spoilers, but my fave line was about heroes and damsels. Well done.

This picks up where we left of in Maenad of Manhatten, and I liked this one better than book one. Aphrodite didn't seem AS shallow and boring as she first did to me in book 1.

In this book it sees Aphrodite travel to Vancover with Loki in search of a missing daughter of a affluent family. Which in turn leads them to Vampires. They soon realize that more is at work than they initially thought, and that then changed the deal Loki had made with the girls father.

This was a great follow up in the series and I am loving the mix of God and Goddess with other supernatural and paranormal being. I look forward to reading more in this series.

I am really loving this series. This book was longer and meatier than the first (haha...longer and meatier... #ImTwelve). It really should be called "The MisAdventures of Loki and Aphrodite."

Definitely liked the delving into more of the folklore around how the Gods and Goddesses got their power, and the general plot with the vampires. Still, I'm a gal who likes the longer stories, and while each of these novellas are full-length, I still wish Meldon would take them into the full-length territory. She's built a wonderful world and I love playing in it.

I enjoyed reading The Vampire of Vancouver. The story is about Aphrodite and Loki gods from the Old World living in the modern world. The story was great. Aphrodite and Loki go vampire hunting and Loki is kidnapped. Aphrodite to the rescue. However, it seems someone is after Aphrodite. I highly recommend this one.
