There's lots of biological information pertaining to the impediments, effects and cures in this guide. Clearly the author has done their homework and speaks from deep understanding. That said, I don't know why it takes some 100+ equivalent paper pages to state the case for effective breathing techniques. I think that most people who'd be interested in knowing how and why to breathe better without having to weed through all the scientific preamble. I understand the need for a self help guide appear to be long enough to look legit, but wading through all the fluff works against it. 30 pages is plenty.
I read several books on improving my breath. I learned a lot from Conscious Breathing. The explanations on how breath works made it clear how important our breathing habit is to our well being. This book is well worth our precious reading time.
The message of the book is valid and most of the content is fascinating and interesting. However, he's balancing on a very thin line between being scientifically correct and speculating in the benefits. I mean, chapters where he is citing one (1) study only and drawing conclusions from that does not build confidence in the correctness of the statements. It does the opposite, giving a feeling of cherry-picking facts.
That said, it's still an inspiring book which at least has made me aware of my breathing technique - and encouraged me to work on that more to improve my health.
I believe this is the same as his book conscious breathing which is the book I am reviewing here. There wasn't much here besides justification for breathing properly and a high level overview of how to breath. James Nestor and Belisa Vranich both have better books. Nestor seems to be friends with Olsson and I imagine Olsson knows his stuff he just doesn't give much technique here. Hopefully he will write a better book in English at some point.
I enjoyed this book. Having been a lifelong mouth breather, suffering from asthma, sleep apnea and on cpap I became interested in my breathing patterns and how to improve my breathing. I also started to explore “breath” in yoga class. I am going to try this author’s breathing retraining course and ordered his Relaxator. I hope what he says about improving breathing will improve my life too.
The comprehensive exploration of respiratory physiology provided valuable insights into the intricate biological processes underlying breathing. While the initial chapters were engaging, the text's complexity increased, potentially challenging reader comprehension. Despite the absence of practical recommendations in the concluding sections, the overall content remained intellectually stimulating.
After 5 decades of martial arts and meditation, I thought I knew all about proper breathing. I was soo wrong. This book will show you why breathing really is the basis of our existence. Without proper breathing you got nothing. Do yourself a solid, read this book.. It's really that important. Good luck
This book was enlightening. It appears that our health is more than the sum of our supplements, rather, it starts with how, and how much, we breathe. This is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand their own health-potential.
If I were going to take a jab I would summarize it as "Breathing fixes everything!", but the reality is breathing does affect more of our bodily processes than we realize. Tons of great footnotes and very practical advice.
This is an excellent book to be taken seriously and adopted by anyone who wants to learn how to become healthier. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book.
I am an avid reader about general health, physiology, psychology and general heath. This is by far the best book I have read. Thank you Mr. Anders Olson. This book was very interesting, exciting and easy to read. Strongly recommend.
What triggers breathing, low O2 or high CO2? Is one a necessary element, the other a toxic waste? What happens when you hyperventilate? What happens if you "mini" hyperventilate all the time? What does going on an "air diet" mean? What regulates the pH in our body? What gives us a "side ache? or a "Stitch"? How can less air per breath result in more oxygen to the cells? How important is it to shut our mouth? Can breathing affect weight loss? Can breathing promote inflammation? See pages 54,55,77 What causes a stuffy nose? What results from excess oxygen caused by over breathing? Why would CO2 therapy improve wound healing? Which nostril should one close to enhance the parasympathetic mode and lower blood pressure? Are there options for CPAP? What affects the position of the teeth? Five Principles of Conscious Breathing: 1) In and out through the nose, 2)Breathe with your diaphragm, 3) Slow and relaxed (quiet) breaths, 4)Rhythmic breathing,5) Quiet & reduced volume. We breathe between 20-25,000 times each day. Each breathe affects our nervous system. This book provides compelling evidence for and explanation of the Buteyko method.
We all know how fundamental breathing is, not just to staying alive, but also to the quality of our lives. But I wonder how many of us realize that the way we breathe is critical to so many more aspects that make life worth living. It certainly never occurred to me, until I read Anders Olsson’s book, that something as simple and natural as breathing could influence the way we look by affecting the way our facial bones develop. Or that breathing through the nose could boost one’s libido, ease bodily aches and pains, and even help us lose weight!
Breathing properly is something that is we all can learn to do. When one considers how much the average person spends these days on improving their looks, boosting their sex lives, and/or losing weight in order to look and feel good, I’m shocked that more of us don’t know about this powerful, easy and free solution to living a longer, healthier, pain-free life. The Power of Your Breath should be required reading for every parent and every child. Sandra Sedgbeer, author, broadcaster, and radio/TV talk show host.
This book presents very complex detailed information about possibility to improve our breathing and the causes as well as the resluts of bad breathing patterns. It includes variety of exercises with easy-to-follow instructions. It´s the best book about breathing I read so far. It draws information from reserches, yoga practices, observations of doctors and therapists and delivers it reader-friendly.
From the moment I start reading the book, begin to become aware of my breathing patterns. It definitely has valuable information that at least during the reading days had a major impact on my life. However the way it is written is "from my point of view" a little messy and repetitive, sometimes losing interest. A little sad that to improve breathing patterns you must buy tools sponsored by the writer, however I will bet on everything learned in the book and give me a chance.
Skimmed through the book. The takeaway is practice nasal breathing and conscious breathing. The points he argues make sense. Been taping my mouth during sleep and using the relaxator.
I had high interest in this, and getting it was a lot of effort. Once I had it I didn't care that much. Summary: Breathe through the nose, with your stomach, slowly and rhythmically.
Superenkelt forklart om hvorfor vi skal puste rolig, med magen, gjennom nesa. Kommer til å bruke en del tid på øvelsene for å jobbe mot en mer optimal pustefrekvens.
