I enjoyed this book for the most part. The parts where the author talks about the role that horse riding played in his father’s life, and in his own, are beautiful and moving. They help me understand the passion that some people have for horses, and for riding.

The chapters on related subjects were mixed. Some, like the one on Géricault, added to the story, while others failed to capture my interest.

The writing was beautiful but the vocabulary made it hard for me to fully appreciate the book. My French is good, but the word choice was frequently quite elevated and the author used a lot of specialized horse-related terms. And the long sentences could be hard to follow (after a bunch of commas I lose the trail.)
