Nightcrawler

Rate this book
Lou Bloom, a driven young man desperate for work, discovers the high-speed world of L.A. crime journalism. Finding a group of freelance camera crews who film crashes, fires, murder and other mayhem, Lou muscles into the cut-throat, dangerous realm of nightcrawling -- where each police siren wail equals a possible windfall and victims are converted into dollars and cents. Aided by Nina, a veteran of the blood-sport that is local TV news, Lou blurs the line between observer and participant to become the star of his own story.

"We're looking at the west of a million years ago," writes the screenwriter, capturing modern Los Angeles at the brink of morning. A million years ago different and a million years ago the same-- Animals fighting to stay alive. The strongest making it to the top. The weakest...desecrated. The only difference: that cheap and corroding facade--civilization. Nightcrawler is truly a modern classic.

This is such an unusually formatted script with elipses denoting shot changes and no regular scene headers. There was no EXT or INT and very few place names, just short bullet-point type sentences and dialogue.

It was a refreshing change and added a lot to the pace and tension in the script.

Highly recommend.

Ehdottomasti vuoden 2014 paras elokuva. Ei minulla muuta :D

This screenplay was pretty amazing. Gilroy has created a character that evokes a visceral emotional response from the reader; a character so depraved that he goes from a perceived simpleton looking to make a quick buck to a textbook psychopath that is much more intelligent and conniving than you could have ever imagined. Gilroy's expert manipulation of dialogue is on point and his narrative arc is flawless.
