The adventures begins in THE DYING AND THE DEAD #1 when a murder at a wedding sets off a series of reactions, unraveling secrets hundreds of years old. At great cost, a man with a dying wife is given the opportunity to save her. A lost tribe is reborn in another time. Seemingly unconnected events that force relics from the Greatest Generation to come together for one last hurrah.

It feels like your standard Hickman comic book; alternative history, fascist cults and a mysterious hero, but it feels different at the same time and more grounded than the usual sci-fi stories Hickman churns out. I'm excited that Hickman may have found new ground to make comic book stories on.
This was an excellent first issue, oversized at 60 pages, it is triple the size of your standard comic book and only at 50 cents more.
Really solid first issue. 60 pages of great writing and art. It's in a style a lot like East of West #1 and now that I'm actually looking at East of West, that's probably because Hickman writes both. He must have a lot of say in the art style, because there's a lot of similarity there too.
What would you do for the one you love? Is it more respectable to let them go in peace and honor or to fight to the death to save them?
The Colonel is given an opportunity to save the only thing he has left.
"Everybody's got secrets. Sometimes they're yours, sometimes they aren't... But only a fool thinks they know them all."
"Colonel, if we believed that religion was bad, why would we have given it to you? There are a large number of your kind--the truly amoral--whose only semblance of belonging to society are the moral affectations they put on in the name of religion. As if the acknowledgement of good and evil absolves them of their complete lack of ability to recognize it."
Well shit, talk about deep thinking and beautiful prose stuck in a comic book, eh?
I think Hickman is skilled writer, but I usually have a hard time following his story lines to the point of frustration & end up not liking his stuff. However, I really enjoyed this as it seems to be a little easier to follow.
Good color artwork, image freebie. A sort of apocalyptic cult has found an object of great power. A retired colonel is being recruited. The war is starting.
Fabulous first issue. Oversize, at 60 pages. Ryan Bodenheim's artwork is fantastic, I love the linework, very clean, his panel design is fantastic, and the execution reminds me somewhat of Geoff Darrow. Hickman's writing is top notch here, opening a nicely balanced mystery. We open with the murder of Amistad and Andrea Osiris, and the secrets that Andrea and Amistad have been keeping from each other. This is contrasted with the Colonel and his wife, who is dying of cancer. These marks the poles, with the one side represented by the secret society led by Bah al'Sharur, and the other led by the Bishop, a denizen of the City, whom the Colonel chooses to serve in exchange for the curing of his wife. The little touches in both the art and the writing indicate that this could develop into a very fine piece of work, and I look forward to its development.
I really, really liked this first issue. Supernatural happenings are afoot in Germany and there seems to be some sort of time slip between two worlds here. I am intrigued to say the least. And the Colonel is fuckin awesome! I mean come on that's fuckin awesome. "The City" as they're calling it is super interesting and I just wanna know more damn it! Definitely gonna be picking up the second issue this month. Oh, and the human race is referred to as "the meat" in this issue and that is hilarious. Go pick it up. It's $4.50 but its a double size. And its worth it.
The coloring is amazing. As well as the artwork. All the details! The full spread on the road, vultures, Texas plates, figures all in white. The dude sitting Indian style reminds me of Dr. Manhattan from the Watchmen; only difference is this ones white. The full spread of the city underground, some buildings are upside down, some twist both upside down and right side up. All individuals are while in color, completely void of any other color. One small typo, "the are no records"...instead of "there are no records" The Colonel is being offered a deal to save his wife and of course he has to take it. Love the cover artwork! Half white/half color.
