RELATIONSHIPS: Heart advice: Getting over a breakup in 7 steps

Rate this book
Do not dismay, because author Jessica Riley has published Heart Getting Over a Breakup in 7 Steps. Riley understand that you are going through one of life’s larger stressors, and she shows you a plan to get back on your emotional feet at quickly as possible. Everyone goes through this sad situation at least once in life, so this book is appropriate for both genders, and for teens and young people as well as mature adults.

First, Riley advises that the key to success is in the attitude. While it is easy to wallow in the misery of the break up, we should try as diligently as possible to look on the bright side of the relationship’s end. For example, you now have time to focus on your career or hobbies that you had perhaps pushed aside in life to make room for this person. She includes in the first chapter a useful plan to get an “internal makeover”, which is a solid foundation for growth.

The second chapter of Heart Advice deals with the complicated issue of reconciliation. Riley discusses when reconciliation may work, and when it certainly will not work, and includes helpful questions for reflection to help diagnose your personal situation. She also includes a sections entitled “$ Reasons Not to Get Back Together With Your Ex” which are very good points to reflect upon as they pertain to your relationship.

Riley also understand that after a break-up, our self-esteem is low, and addresses this issue honestly and completely. Her list of “5 Ways to Cope With a Break-Up” list 5 strategies to get emotionally on track as soon as possible. Riley is also careful to tell us what not to do after a breakup, such as overindulge in food or alcohol or isolate and rarely leave home.

When your ex has cheated, you’ are dealing with an added dimension in your hurt and loss, and Riley devotes an entire chapter to this particular situation. Riley’s methods are commonsensical and practical. She address both how to handle the ex in this situation and how to handle emotions of betrayal and personal rejection

There are of course the practical matters in breaking up, like returning each other’s belongings. Riley gives sound advice on how to handle these matters with your boundaries in place.

Heart Matters includes a chapter for an issue we do not read much what to do when you feel like contacting your ex. Again, Riley gives many practical and immediately helpful pointers to address the issue quickly and keeping in mind your overall mental health.

You may certainly find yourself returning to this book at different times, because of Riley’s chapter on “Common Traps” to be watchful for after a breakup. I don’t know anyone who hasn’t experienced these at least once in similar positions.
