The Rasputins have been torn apart! Trapped in a gladiator arena, will Magik be able to fight her way out? And with no way to find her, will Colossus be able to help her before it’s too late?!
So, I despise Illyana's current costume. It popped up around 2011, and since then the fanboys have fought for it to be her "official" look. Writers and artists have tried to change it up. Around 2022, somebody tried to give her a costume with actual pants. Yet, by 2025, here she is once again with the booty shorts and the weird metal things sticking out of her hair.
The stupid costume and the oversized version of the soulsword are annoying enough. I understand that Illyana is just getting fetishized, and in modern times artists are applying Anime styling to her, where the character was originally sword-and-sorcery style.
But, the modern interpretation of the character doesn't seem to have a basic understanding of her. In this issue, the conflict was that she was trapped in a gladiatorial fighting ring, and if she used any magic, the person holding her captive could drain magic from her. Illyana rightly figured out that meant she should fight without magic. But, the writer took that to mean she could only fight with her fists. The idea of using her mutant powers offensively? Didn't come up. I have been waiting years for Illyana to just manifest stepping discs through a villain, slicing him to pieces, and teleporting those pieces across time and space.
Every time Colossus shared his sad sack thoughts, I wanted to turn the page.
This series just is so good. All the flashbacks to young Illyana are worth the price of admission alone, but the context of them, the bonding being presented between the siblings is just so good. The art is great too. Plus, Baba Yaga shows up at the end!
Some of the best character work I've seen from Marvel in a bit, Allen does a great job of finally laying out why things are so tense between these two right now and laying the ground work for it to get better with a few added elements to their past.
3 Me gusta mucho que mezcle folklore e historias relacionadas con el origen ruso de Peter e Illyana y que todo revuelva en torno a su infancia y a la necesidad de que resuelvan sus diferencias.
