The 8 Gateways: Book III of The Scottish Scrolls

Rate this book
A witch society hidden in shadow.
Worlds bracing for war.
And a final stand that will decide the fate of humanity.

The old threat has fallen, and with it the last desperate hopes of a dark prophecy that promised to save Mother Nature through mass sacrifice.

But victory came at a cost. Mckenna has lost someone she loves—someone whose bond ran deeper than friendship. Without them, the prophecy can’t be fulfilled, though that’s cold comfort. Now, an even greater danger looms. The Akashic Records have stamped an expiration date on the world, and the Phainonians are determined to ensure humanity never reaches ascension. Mathis has a plan, but it depends on Mckenna. To succeed, she must track down the ancient gateways between worlds and wield a power she’s only just beginning to grasp.

Can she rise to the challenge before she loses herself completely? Or will the last living Wise One be forced to watch the world unravel?

The final book in The Scottish Scrolls trilogy delivers a fierce conclusion—where witches meet in the night, magic is pushed to its limits, and the fate of humanity rests on one teenager…and the uneasy trust of beings thought to exist only in faerytales.

I received this as an ARC and could not have been more thrilled to dive back into The Scottish Scrolls! Five stars from me for the last installment of this trilogy. Now that it’s complete, I’m somewhat jealous of those who will now have the opportunity to binge all three in a row, because the wait has been as excruciating as this author's storytelling is intoxicating! Anglehart’s story has heart in a measure which I rarely see in literature anymore, capable of underpinning the plot and various subplots in a unique and meaningful way. Saying that her characters are well-developed is an understatement — they essentially fly off the page, and by the end of The 8 Gateways, you feel as though you’ve known them forever. They take you along for the ride on their journey without it ever feeling tiresome —the read is always light and enjoyable — the dialogue, sharp, funny, laced with sarcasm and wit which all effortlessly move the story along. In fact, the plot is intricate yet it progresses smoothly — information, description, vibrant folklore and action coexisting seamlessly. The prose is equally laudable, with KT’s imagery rendering an experience which is not only literary but borderline cinematic, thanks to her unique way of describing the breathtaking landscapes and fantastical scenarios which will be brewing in your mind (and likely causing you to book a ticket to Scotland). This isn’t simply another book to read, it’s an experience to embark upon for anyone who loves a story that will tug at your heartstrings, for anyone who believes in the human experience, in lessons learned, and in the importance of striving toward progress and the prevalence of good, for anyone who believes in magic, and most of all, anyone who has ever wondered how in the world they would face a challenge, only to find strength and magic within themselves.

The 8 Gateways is the epic, skin‑tingling conclusion to the Scottish Scrolls trilogy, and I could not have asked for a more satisfying finale. As soon as I received the ARC, I immediately downloaded the first two books—and I’m so glad I did.
This story has everything I love in fantasy: magic, saving the world, Scotland and Ireland, Celtic myths and legends, prophecy, and ultimately, finding your people and learning to trust them. K.T. Anglehart’s writing has grown stronger with each book, and it truly shines here. Her descriptions are bold and immersive, and the characters feel deeply real.
McKenna is a compelling heroine—young, inexperienced, and carrying immense emotional weight while facing the impossible task of saving the world. Watching her grow, make mistakes, and learn from them felt incredibly authentic. Her belief that she must do everything alone to protect those she loves adds real emotional depth, and it made me feel deeply connected to her journey.
The stakes are intense, with a looming “death date” for the world and powerful non‑human beings determined to stop humanity’s ascension. The tension is constant, and the parallels to real‑world issues make the story feel especially relevant. I loved the relationships just as much as the plot—Mathias, McKenna, and even the distrust surrounding Cillian felt genuine. The banter was sharp, funny, and never overdone.
Anglehart’s reverence for Scotland, Ireland, and Celtic mythology is evident on every page. Having visited some of these places myself, I could vividly picture them—and even the places I hadn’t been felt incredibly real.
And that ending? Absolute perfection. Everything came together beautifully, and every lingering question was answered. A flawless conclusion to a fantastic trilogy.
Highly recommended for fans of Celtic-inspired fantasy, rich worldbuilding, and character-driven stories.

Book Rating:⭐ 5/5

This was such a powerful and satisfying conclusion to the Scottish Scrolls trilogy. I honestly feel like this series just kept getting stronger with each book, and this final book brought everything together in a way that felt both epic and deeply emotional.

McKenna’s journey continues to be the heart of the story. I really loved seeing how much she has grown into herself, especially as she steps further into her magic and begins to fully understand her role in everything that has been unfolding. She is still imperfect and human, but that is exactly what makes her so compelling to follow. Her growth felt earned and natural, not rushed. I loved every second of it!

The world-building in this final book is absolutely incredible. The Celtic mythology, Scottish and Irish influences, and the sense of ancient magic all feel so vivid and immersive. It genuinely feels like you are stepping into a full-blown metaphysical world that has history and depth beyond just pages, and that made the reading experience so much more fulfilling.

I also really appreciated how everything started to come together in this book so well. The stakes feel higher than ever, but there is also a sense of clarity as the story moves toward the end. The prophecy, the magic system, and all the emotional threads that have been building across the series all connect in a really satisfying way.

One of my favorite things about this series overall is how much care is put into both the characters and the setting. You can feel K.T.'s love for Celtic lore on every page, and it makes the story feel so much more special than it already is!

Overall, this was an emotional, magical, and beautifully crafted ending to the trilogy that I loved with my whole heart. I will definitely be thinking about this series for a long time.

The survival of the world rests in the hands of teenaged Mckenna O’Dwyer, a Wise One whose existence spans centuries in different lifetimes. Despite being an important bridge, however, Mckenna is not entirely alone in her mission. Though her best friend Nissa has returned to the land of Elfame, Mckenna has stumbled upon an unlikely group of companions at her new school. Together, Mckenna and her friends must learn how to pool their unique abilities to uncover forgotten secrets and rescue the future of humanity. This third in the Scottish Scrolls series is a high-intensity continuation of Mckenna’s story. A reminder of the final moments of book two is included at the beginning of this novel to ensure readers are prepared for the story to come. Accessible, energetic writing focuses on the plot from primarily Mckenna’s perspective, although others are included as well, giving readers only a glimpse into the wider world in which Mckenna finds herself. This vantage point gives readers insight into Mckenna’s challenges while allowing tension to build in the unknown thoughts and actions of the characters around her. Blending ancient Celtic history and legends with secret societies and magic, this series transports readers to the British Isles through a fantastic and exciting adventure. Best for fans of approachable young adult literature that can be enjoyed by a wide range of ages, this book is an engaging conclusion to its series and a good addition to library collections for readers who appreciate the interconnection between the past and the present.

I received an ARC of "The 8 Gateways" in exchange for an honest review!!

I'm always honoured to receive updates from K.T. Anglehart, and being chosen to review The 8 Gateways was such an honour. I was looking forward to this book for so long, and I'm so glad it's finally going to be shared soon!!

K.T. concludes Mckenna's story perfectly! Her story spanned 3 books, and she got to travel to Scotland and Ireland, discovering herself and her abilities. Her strength shines in this book. She started as a teenager, but as the story went on, I could tell just how much she had grown and matured.

All of the characters had their own little journey, and K.T. connected them seamlessly. Their paths were all meant to cross at just the right moment so that they could help Mckenna with her task. It's not easy trying to save the world, especially as a teenager.

As a side note, I know how much research went into these books because K.T. really travelled to all of these amazing places.

Speaking of the setting of The 8 Gateways, K.T.'s ability to make you feel like you're seeing the landscape is unparalleled. It made me feel like I was in these places, and truthfully, made me want to visit them for real.

While The 8 Gateways concludes Mckenna's story, I'm eager to see what K.T. comes up with next. There are still so many characters who could have their own story, and I can only hope she plans to explore that!!

The 8 Gateways is a fantastical read!

As the final book in The Scottish Scrolls trilogy, the story picks up right where it left off in The Twin Flame and catapults you on a high-stakes magical journey with a skin-tingling epic conclusion.

This story is a magical potion of adventure, action, family and found family, trust, courage, destiny, Scottish history and folklore, and witchy empowerment.

Multiple POVs provide a 360-degree insight into the story’s many overlapping layers. I found this to be delightfully voyeuristic and done in such a way that it added to my connection to McKenna who truly is the heart of this story.

McKenna’s inner strength, positivity, and commitment to do her best is inspiring. I rooted for her every step of the way. Experiencing McKenna navigate her own course – to make hard decisions and keep moving forward - is powerfully emotional. A must YA read.

I was absolutely gobsmacked by all the mystical elements (many of which are factual based) and the artful way in which the author weaves these elements, making connections and putting all the pieces together that is McKenna’s destiny. (A pangolin secret society? Sign me up!)

The author’s passion and reverence for Scottish history and folklore shine in this series. It felt like I was in Scotland – at multiple points in time. Can’t wait to visit in person some day.
And I can’t wait to see what K.T. Anglehart does next!

I was honoured to be selected as an advanced copy reader for The 8 Gateways by K.T. Anglehart as her series has become one of my absolute favorites. I discovered the series a few years ago and have been hooked since book 1. I’ve never read anything like these books before.

What stands out while reading this series is how knowledgeable the author is on Scottish lore. You can feel how special this world is and the care the author put into setting the right tone for the reader instead of just making stuff up and hoping for the best. It doesn’t read like some typical fantasy where everything feels distant and made up. The 8 Gateways blends spiritual/new-age ideas with scottish folklore which allowed me to picture myself in the book experiencing everything firsthand. It almost makes you feel like this world really exists and has you hoping to stumble down a rabbit hole into it - a real testament to the detailed writing and care the author puts into her work.

It wraps things up in a way that feels earned, especially if you’ve followed the characters from the earlier books. Without wanting to give anything away but finally reading this last segment in the trilogy is so bittersweet. This is one of those rare stories that kind of sneak up on you, invite you in and then you can’t really stop thinking about it after. I need to go journal about this now.

I received an advanced copy of this book and I was so excited to finally read it! The 8 Gateways was an outstanding finale to the series, and easily my favourite of the three books. The author brought everything together with such intention and clarity, delivering an ending that felt both meaningful and deeply satisfying.
This final installment was especially thought provoking and insightful. Mckenna’s character development stood out in a big way, watching her step more into her magic and embrace her destiny added so much depth to the story. Her growth felt natural and powerful.
One of the things I appreciated most was the author’s talent for description. Her ability to paint scenes so vividly made it effortless to picture every moment. The world and the magic felt tangible, almost cinematic, and it pulled me into the story in such an immersive way.
Overall, I absolutely loved this book. It’s a beautifully crafted and memorable conclusion to a trilogy I’ll definitely be thinking about for a long time. Highly recommend the entire series, but this final book especially is something truly special.

What a powerful way to end a trilogy!

Having read all three books in The Scottish Scrolls, I can honestly say this finale delivers. The story flows from beginning to end, and the conclusion feels earned, emotional, and satisfying.

Mckenna’s journey has been one of growth, heartbreak, courage, and self-discovery. She isn’t a flawless heroine; she’s real. She wrestles with insecurity, love, grief, and responsibility in ways that feel deeply human. Watching her step into her power (even when she doubts herself) is what makes this series so compelling.

The Scottish and Irish folklore woven throughout adds a rich layer to the world-building. The magic is vivid without overpowering the heart of the story. Beneath the prophecy, hidden witch societies, and looming war, there are life lessons about resilience, sacrifice, trust, and becoming who you’re meant to be.

If you enjoy YA fantasy with strong character development, emotional depth, folklore, and just the right touch of magic, this trilogy is worth the read!

This is a series I truly enjoyed. Can't wait to see what may be next from this author!

I really loved The Wise One and Twin Flame, so I was super excited to read The 8 Gateways—and it definitely didn’t disappoint. I kind of knew going in that I’d be traveling to new realms again, and K.T. delivered on that in the best way.

I’m honestly even more in love with the Fae world and all the different creatures after this book. It just pulls you in so easily. I also liked how the story mixes magical adventures with family drama and relationship stuff—it makes everything feel more real and relatable.

Another thing I enjoyed was how the whole good vs. evil struggle keeps coming up, not just with the main characters but with the side characters too. It adds a lot more depth to the story.

Another great feature of the book—and the series overall—is its focus on protecting nature, which feels more important now than ever. The author really frames this message well. I do wish we got to see more of McKenna’s ongoing battle against the destruction of nature, though—it would’ve been interesting to explore that even further.

Overall, this was such a fun and engaging read, and a great continuation of the series.

This is the last installment in the Scottish Scrolls Trilogy. Having never heard of this series, I was excited to be able to read these books. I can honestly say that I watched the evolution of the author's writing with each book.

This final installment was the perfect ending to an amazing story. Characters were very well written and felt so authentic and true. Our FMC was perfectly flawed in all the best ways, but I feel like because of those flaws and the mistakes that she made, she really grew and came into her own. I love to see a character's growth through the story.

I love anything with a Scottish; Celtic feel to it. Combine that with magic, chaos and mythology and you have the perfect undertones for a dynamic story. I love how the entire series really pulled me in but this last book was like jumping into the abyss; not knowing where you'd land. Yet you come out smiling and so fulfilled. This trilogy will definitely live rent free in my mind for quite some time. You know a book is good when you literally just finished reading it and you want to turn around and start it all over again.

5 MASSIVE STARS!!!!

I honestly couldn’t believe it—I cried, with actual tears streaming down my face. What an absolutely breathtaking conclusion to the trilogy! I’m fighting the urge to reveal anything, but wow… what an ending. This book is masterfully crafted. It ties together every lingering thread, resolves all the unanswered questions, and delivers a conclusion that feels both satisfying and powerful. The writing is exceptional—you can feel how much the author has evolved and refined her craft since the first two books. Her descriptions are vivid, immersive, and emotionally resonant. I’ve grown more attached to these characters than ever; they feel so real, so familiar, like friends you’ve journeyed with for years. Honestly, I would love to see this turned into a Netflix series—the characters are so richly developed and compelling that they’d come alive beautifully on screen. Bravo, K.T. Anglehart—what an extraordinary achievement!

I received an advanced copy of this book and absolutely loved it! As a fan of the other books in the series, I found the conclusion to The Scottish Scrolls really satisfying and emotionally rewarding. Watching McKenna’s growth, both in her powers and in her relationships, was one of the highlights for me. Nissa's adventures in Elfame were magical and heartwarming, I loved the different realms we were introduced to!

As with the first two books, it’s clear how much care and research went into the mythology and the history of the places explored. The setting felt vivid and grounded, and I genuinely found myself wanting to learn more, especially about Orkney, which has now made its way onto my travel wish list.

I received this book as an ARC and, FINALLY because I've been waiting for this book to drop!
Picking up right where we left off in book 2, begins a whirlwind of events, right until the final chapter. I laughed, I cried. I had so much fun reading the conclusion of this adventure. All my questions were answered, delivered wrapped neatly in a bow (thank you).
I personally appreciated how the writing style never wavered from the previous books, and the story-telling was linear and really thought out; executed well and proper.
I'm excited for this book to hit stores and read everyone's thoughts on this as well!

I was lucky enough to get my first arc and this was it !

I actually discovered K.T. Angelhart because I received an ARC of The 8 Gateways. After starting it, I went and read the first two books in the series in two days because I needed the full story.

I really appreciated how this book closes out McKenna’s journey. Seeing her growth come full circle made the ending feel very intentional and satisfying. And I absolutely loved Nissa — she added so much to the story and was one of my favorite characters.

If you start this series, don’t be surprised if you end up binge-reading it. Such a good series!!

Once again, K.T. Anglehart did it! I loved the conclusion to The Scottish Scrolls….but I’m also devastated that it’s over. I feel like all my questions were answered and left with a smile. I also LOVE LOVE LOVE the precise and accurate representation of the pangolin. As someone from the field of animal biology, it always warms my heart when lesser-known species are brought up even just once, but this was the WHOLE book! Also I appreciate all the references to real world historical sites and people. I highly recommend this book and series, it’s such a great read even for someone like me who can’t make images in my mind. I still felt immersed in these worlds and enjoyed every minute of it.

This was one of the most satisfying series wrap ups that I have read. I was so happy to have found this series and seriously enjoyed reading every single line of this book. I was sucked into this world and didn’t want to leave it. Mckenna has a lot of weight on her shoulders and watching her try to navigate the world felt like going on a truly authentic journey. I really felt connected to her as a character. The growth and development we see from all the characters kept me well and truly invested in the story from start to finish. The way their paths are intertwined and weave together to create a cohesive story was perfection. I was so satisfied with how this story ended.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The 8 Gateways: Book III of The Scottish Scrolls by K. T. Anglehart is such a powerful and emotional finale to this incredible trilogy. Finishing this book felt bittersweet because while the story delivers such an epic and satisfying conclusion, I was not ready to say goodbye to this world and these characters.

From the very beginning of this series I grew attached to Mckenna, and in this final installment you truly see how much she has grown. She is carrying the weight of loss, responsibility, and the fate of the world all at once. The grief she feels after losing someone so important to her was written in a way that felt very real and raw. You can feel how much it shapes the choices she has to make moving forward.

What I loved most about this book is how much bigger the story becomes. The stakes are incredibly high with the world facing an expiration date and powerful forces determined to stop humanity from reaching ascension. Watching McKenna step into her role as the last living Wise One while trying to understand the power she is only beginning to discover made the journey feel intense and emotional.

The search for the ancient gateways between worlds was fascinating and filled with so many magical moments. The story blends witchcraft, prophecy, mythology, and fantasy in such a unique way. It really felt like the characters were standing on the edge of something massive and world changing. Every decision carried weight and every step forward felt important.

I also loved how the story explored trust, especially between beings who were once thought to only exist in legends and fairy tales. Those relationships added so much depth and wonder to the story and made the world feel even richer.

K. T. Anglehart created a finale that feels epic, emotional, and incredibly satisfying. This book is full of magic, danger, sacrifice, and hope. It is a story about courage, destiny, and what it means to carry the fate of the world on your shoulders when you are still trying to figure out who you are.

If you love fantasy filled with witches, prophecy, powerful magic, and high stakes adventure, this series is absolutely worth reading. This final book left me feeling amazed at the journey and grateful to have experienced Mckenna’s story. A truly unforgettable ending to a fantastic trilogy.

I’m so glad I was about to receive this as an arc and be a part of this amazing journey.

What's not to love about this book. The pacing, the setting and character development are just perfect.
I could definitely have spent more time in this world.

The stakes are definitely higher and I liked seeing how all the different threads came together. Also, everything is wrapped up so nicely, not rushed in anyway, just right.

What a fantastic ending to this series. Read the book through an ARC and loved The 8 Gateways. I haven’t stopped thinking about it!

We finally get to explore the faerie realm of Elfame and it was so full of intrigue and interesting characters.

In these tough times as a society, the book (and series) is a breath of fresh air and makes us think, “we are worth fighting for.”

KT Anglehart, thank you for putting your beautiful story out there for all of us to read!
