okay so that was the best book I’ve read in a long time.

If you are a fan of Brooklyn 99 you will LOVE this book

A few tropes included in this book:
- accidental pregnancy
- second chance
- workplace romance

First of all, Brendan yearns FROM THE START. This man is IN LOVE WITH SADIE and it is shown throughout the entire book.

These characters are SO MATURE. Genuinely every time they were bickering or a secret was revealed, they HANDLED IT MATURELY (and I feel like that is so rare to find).

I read this in 1 sitting and I don’t regret it. I loved every single thing abt this book. NO COMPLAINTS

thank you to Love Notes PR and Bretta Elaine for this ARC, IT CHANGED MY LIFE.

Okay, I LOVED this book. The romance was everything, and I seriously can’t stop thinking about Bren — he was hilarious, swoony, and didn’t give up on her, which honestly just melted me 🫶. Every moment with him had me smiling or giggling, I’m obsessed.

Jackson? Ugh. So stupidly annoying. Like, I couldn’t with him at all. But honestly, that made me love Bren even more. The story hit me right in the feels, and the ending was so cute I actually had a little heart explosion reading it ❤️.

If you love second-chance romance with a funny, persistent hero and an adorable ending, this one’s a must-read.

I really enjoyed Secrets and Second Chances by Secrets and Second Chances. This was one of those stories that pulls you in right away and keeps you invested in the characters the whole time.
The second chance aspect worked so well for me. The history between Sadie and her partner felt genuine, and the hurt from the past was still very present. You could feel the tension in every interaction once they were back in each other’s lives. The added layer of her being his boss made everything even more complicated in the best way.
I also loved how the story blended multiple tropes without feeling crowded. The small town setting added warmth, while the workplace dynamic and forced proximity kept things moving. The secret baby element added emotional weight and made the stakes feel higher.
The chemistry between the main characters was strong from start to finish. There is definitely spice, but it never overshadowed the emotional side of the story. I appreciated that the author took the time to unpack Sadie’s choices and the reasons behind her leaving.
Overall, this was a satisfying and emotional romance with a lot of heart. If you enjoy second chance stories with strong tension and meaningful character growth, I would recommend giving this one a try.

Thank you to Bretta Elaine and Love Notes PR for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.

This is my first book by Bretta Elaine and I loved her writing and how engaging it felt. Honestly, second chance romances have become my least favorite troupe lately, but for the most part I enjoyed this one. I loved how they both were celibate during their time apart. Brenden honestly just made me want to swoon, I loved how pathetic he was for her. He was down bad for her and his antics had me laughing because they felt so unserious. Y’all he literally deserves the world. I’m still upset with Sadie for leaving how she did because hello why would you do that? Sis definitely needed to grovel, but sadly Brenden is a simp therefore no grovel on her end. This is definitely more lighthearted and fun.

A couple of things, I wish would’ve been explored more was Brenden’s depression, it kind of felt like it was being glossed over and more moments with Campbell. I wish it felt like he was more apart of the story than just the storyline. Also, the Audra kiss was just not it….

Two years ago, Brenden finally got up the nerve to make a move on his best friend, partner and all-around object of his affection, Sadie Marsh.

After an amazing—or at least he thought it was amazing—naked romp in the sheets with him, she ghosted him.

But that’s in the past. Or at least it is until she pops back up as Brenden’s new boss.

One look at her and every feeling Brenden’s pushed down since she left comes flooding back in, the good and the bad.

Brenden needs to know why she left and what other secrets she’s hiding from him.

But none of that is going to stop him from barreling back into her life and heart. He’s willing to use every trick and charm in his arsenal to make it happen.

*This is book 4 in the Willow Hill Series. Each can be read as a standalone. *

YOU'RE MENTAL HEALTH MATTERS!!! Please read and pay close attention to the trigger warnings at the beginning of this book. There is some content and scenes in this book that may not be suitable for all readers and could be triggering for others. Always remember that your mental health comes first at all times.

Tropes: Accidental Pregnancy, Second Chance, Workplace Romance, She’s his Boss, Detective, Humor, Open Door Spice, Small-Town, Feisty FMC, Golden Retriever MMC, Secret Baby, Friends-to-Lovers, Characters in Law Enforcement, Law Enforcement, Detective Sergeant x Detective (She’s his Boss), Forced Proximity, Heartbreak, Yearning, Summer Romance, Small-Town, Standalone, One-Night Stand, Ghosted, New Boss, Secrets, Contemporary, Funny, Found Family.

Secrets and Second Chances is the 4th book in the Willow Hill series by Bretta Elaine.

Bretta Elaine is a new author to me and I have to say that overall, I was really impressed with her writing and storytelling. I found that Bretta’s writing was enthralling, the banter between Brenden and Sadie flowed so naturally. This book delivered everything that it promised, a sexy, small-town, second-chance romance.

Secrets and Second Chances is told through dual POVs. It follows Sadie and Brenden, two former police partners, over time they fell hard for each other. They both spent years pining for each other, when one night they finally gave in and spent one hot night together, only for Sadie to suddenly vanish without any explanation.

Two years later, Sadie suddenly reappears as Brenden’s new boss and the tension between them is thick and immediate. With Sadie suddenly reappearing Brenden’s left trying to figure out how he can win her back, and meanwhile Sadie is left trying to figure out if she even deserves a second chance with Brenden, especially with the life-changing secret she’s been keeping

I found that I really enjoyed the emotional tension between Sadie and Brenden; it felt authentic, natural and grounded. The internal conflict that Brenden was fighting, especially his desire to get back at Sadie and hurt her the way she hurt him, that felt so raw and so very real. But you know that deep down at his core he’s this golden retriever type of man that he couldn’t follow through no matter how hard he tried. You know that he only wants her, and I found that his softness made Brenden so very incredibly likable and even lovable.

I feel as though I was at a slight disadvantage not having read the previous books as I wasn’t familiar with the entire friend group and the dynamics surrounding it. I did enjoy the banter between Brenden and his brother Griff although for me, the dynamics felt off with Brenden and some of his female friends. I get that Brenden is supposed to be this complete and total “smokeshow” but there were times that all of their behaviors felt just way over the top and kind of felt forced at times.

I did really enjoy the idea of Sadie being Brenden’s boss, but I do wish that this dynamic had been further explored. This dynamic had the potential to add even more tension and complexity to their relationship. At the same time, Brenden’s struggle with depression was introduced but not fully explored. Honestly, I think given more space and time it would have added even more meaningful depth and more layers, especially given that men’s mental health isn’t always focused on in a romance, or really in any genre that I’ve read.

Secrets and Second Chances had it’s flaws but at the same time it also had more strong moments than it had flaws and I genuinely loved this book. I will be reading the rest of the series.

I highly recommend Secrets and Second Chances this is really an enjoyable read.

My favorite quote is:

“I want her heart. I want her secrets. I want a second chance at us.” -Brenden

Secrets and Second Chances by Bretta Elaine was such an addictive read—I was hooked from the very first page. It’s one of those books that completely pulls you in and makes it almost impossible to put down.
One of my favourite aspects of this book was the dual POV. It added so much depth to both Bren and Sadie, allowing me to really understand their emotions, their past, and the reasons why they are the way they are now. Seeing both sides of their relationship made everything feel more real and, honestly, even more emotional.
Bren’s perspective especially highlights the heartbreak and confusion he carries after Sadie leaves without any explanation. One quote that really stood out to me was:
“Sadie fucking Marsh stands right in front of me, arms folded and hip cocked like she means business. There’s no way. Maybe I crashed my bike, and this is all some sort of death limbo or unresolved-issues hellscape. Yeah, that’s it. I’m dead. Because there’s no way the woman who used to be my best friend and partner is standing in front of me after almost two years of silence.”
You can really feel the shock and disbelief in that moment, but also how much she still means to him.
Another quote that captures his vulnerability so well is:
“Maybe it’s because I’m too sick to care. Or maybe it’s because I know I don’t have to pretend to be perfect with Sadie. That I can be a real, semi-messy person with her.”
It shows how much he cares about her, and how safe he feels with her—even when their relationship is fragile and uncertain.
Sadie’s perspective was just as compelling, especially as someone who tends to overthink (very relatable, honestly). From the moment she sees Bren again, her emotions feel overwhelming and impossible to ignore:
“My gaze snags on the tattoos covering his biceps, and my mouth goes dry. Oh God. I recognize those tattoos. Those arms. It’s been two years, but they still haunt my dreams. A thousand regrets hit me like a tidal wave, drowning me instantly. It’s like all the air has been sucked from my lungs with just one look at him.”
It’s such a raw moment, filled with regret and longing, and it really sets the tone for their dynamic.
She overanalyses everything he does, which makes her feelings feel even more real:
“Bren wiping his forearm over his brow, and dear God, it’s the most sensual thing I’ve ever witnessed. I must be going crazy because a man sweating is nothing new or special.”
Even after years apart, she still sees him the same way she did before, which says so much about their connection.
Another quote that really stood out to me from Sadie’s perspective was:
“I might desperately need human companionship. I could call Leighton and ask her to come over or go out. And yeah, we would have a good time. But I don’t want just anyone. She isn’t the person who sets my soul on fire. The person I want to sit and talk nonsense with for hours. He is.”
It perfectly captures the kind of love that’s more than just attraction—it’s comfort, connection, and familiarity.
And then there are the funny moments—this book genuinely made me laugh out loud, which I didn’t expect. This scene had me in tears:
“I stabbed his air mattress. I stabbed his air mattress. I fucking stabbed his air mattress…”
It’s chaotic, dramatic, and honestly so relatable in the most unhinged way.
The writing style balances faster-paced moments with slower, more emotional scenes really well, which I think works perfectly for this story. It keeps things engaging while still giving you time to connect with the characters and really feel everything they’re going through.
I also loved seeing how supportive Bren is of Sadie and her dream job, even putting his own career on hold. Their relationship feels so grounded and genuine, especially in moments like this:
“Bren is my rock. He is steady and solid against anything that gets thrown our way…”
It really highlights the strength of their relationship and how much they truly mean to each other.
Overall, I think this would be a great read for romance lovers who enjoy emotional stories with a mix of humour, strong character connections, and a few surprises along the way. If you like books that make you laugh, feel deeply, and keep you wondering what’s going to happen next, this is definitely one to pick up.

📝 BLURB 📝

Two years ago, I finally got up the nerve to make a move on my best friend, partner and all-around object of my affection, Sadie Marsh. After an amazing—or at least I thought it was amazing—naked romp in the sheets with me, she ghosted me.
But that's in the past. Or at least it is until she pops back up as my new boss.
One look at her and every feeling I've pushed down since she left comes flooding back in, the good and the bad.
I need to know why she left and what other secrets she's hiding from me.
But none of that is going to stop me from barreling back into her life and heart. I'm willing to use every trick and charm in my arsenal to make it happen.

MMC Brenden Henderson is a man who isn't afraid to yearn & he'll do so LOUD AND PROUD. He is not afraid to shout his love and intentions from EVERY ROOFTOP! His one-liners will either have you blushing or kicking your feet gleefully. Don't get it twisted though, he's such a ‘golden retriever simp’ for his girl 'Sades' 🥰❤️

FMC Sadie Marsh is a sassy, quick-witted boss lady who just wants to be loved at the end of the day. After having to disappear for 2 years, she’s back in town and comes face to face with her past.....literally. As she fights her internal battle against the love of her past & what her future holds, she learns that sometimes it's ok to place your trust & heart in someone else’s hands. 💕

The only things I would change:

* It is a little fast paced in some areas. I'd love to have seen a little more detail and explanation in some scenes. I feel like if there was just a little more time in the explanation of the past, it would help the pace not feel so rushed in the beginning & add a tiny bit more depth to the emotional impact. That being said, the pace does level out as the book continues, which really helped me enjoy it! (Also, who doesn't love thicker books 😜)

** I do wish that there had been a little deeper dive into Bren's struggle with depression. I feel like this too would've contributed to additional emotional depth to the book, especially since men's mental health isn't really mentioned in romance genres.

*** I also wished there had been a little more time spent with Campbell & Bren’s relationship. UGHHHH, seeing Bren step into his role as a 1st time dad....SWOOOONNNN 💕

This is my first story by Bretta Elaine, who is a new author, but I'm absolutely going to go read the complete series. I was really impressed with her writing style and loved how quick this story sucks you in. Thank you to Bretta Elaine & Love Notes PR for this ARC in exchange for my honest review!

Thank you to LovenotesPR for the opportunity to read this early!
This was my first Bretta Elaine book, and overall, I was really pleased. The writing was engaging, and the banter between the characters flowed naturally. It delivered exactly what it promised, a sexy, small-town, second-chance romance.

The story is told through dual POVs, following Sadie and Bren, former police partners who fell hard for each other over time. After years of pining, they finally give in and spend the night together, only for Sadie to disappear without explanation. When she returns two years later as Bren’s new boss, the tension between them is immediate. Bren is left trying to figure out how to win her back, while Sadie struggles with whether she even deserves a second chance after the life-altering secret she’s been keeping.

I really enjoyed the emotional tension between Sadie and Bren; it felt authentic and grounded. Bren’s internal conflict, especially his desire to hurt Sadie the way she hurt him, was very real. But at his core, he’s such a golden retriever type of man that he just can’t follow through, he only wants her, and that softness made him incredibly likable.

I didn’t read the previous books in the series, and I do think that impacted my experience a bit. At times, I felt a little out of the loop with the friend group dynamics. While I enjoyed some of the banter, especially between Bren and his brother Griff, other moments felt a bit off to me, particularly with some of the female friends. I get that Bren is meant to be a total smokeshow, but at times their behavior felt over the top.

I also really liked the idea of Sadie being Bren’s boss, but I wish that dynamic had been explored more. It had the potential to add even more tension and complexity to their relationship. Similarly, Bren’s struggle with depression was introduced but not deeply explored. I think giving that more space would have added meaningful depth, especially since men’s mental health isn’t always highlighted in romance.
Overall, this book had its flaws, but it also had some really strong moments that I genuinely enjoyed. I’ll definitely be adding the rest of the series to my TBR.

This is my ARC review of Secrets and Second Chances and I want to say that it did not disappoint! WOW! This book was absolutely fantastic and I WOULD recommend this to just about anyone who loves a small town, fun and witty, rom com romance! This book has such fun tropes that are written so well such as
- feisty FMC
- golden retriever MMC
- secret baby
- friends to lovers
- workplace romance
- characters in law enforcement
Bretta Elaine writes all of these so well and I seriously recommend!
Comments:
• this book is SO fun. I found myself laughing all the way through this book. Like laying on the couch licking my feet 👣 The comments are witty and the sibling relationship in this book is so funny. The main character banter is great. This book was a great switch up and refresher from the dark romance I usually read.
• the text exchanges are SO funny
• the MMC, Brenden, is definitely down badddd for the FMC, Sadie. He is in love and makes that very clear the entire book. The FMC is a feisty queen 😍, she has times of being is a bit of a fragile state of mind BUT for the most part is very feisty!
• well written and easy to understand. Language/word choice is not written like it came from a child but it’s not so complex that you need a dictionary to understand.
• The ending was so sweet 🩷
• this book is part of a series but can be read as a standalone and that is CORRECT! I hate when I read a book that claims to be standalone capable but then I’m missing details or I’ll decide to read the whole series and realize I was missing so much. I don’t feel I lost anything while reading this book!
- The only thing I would change-
• pacing is a little fast at the start and I didn’t feel like there was quite enough detail for some scenes but that did improve as the book went on. This book was 352 pages on kindle but could have been 375-400ish to add more detail in places without being too long.
• SPICE WAS GOOOOOOD! I give it 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️.5! Scenes were really entertaining and well described!

Secrets ans Second Chances ⚡
Firstly,I want to thank LoveNotes PR & Bretta Elaine for trusting me with this ARC.🖤
Two years ago,Brenden got the courage to make a move with this best friend. & she left him.
Now,she is back in town. Now,all the secrets and never told whys will finally be revealed.

Secrets and Second Chances is one of the books, that since the first chapter you feel that it is going to be a 5 star,so yes I was prepared for the read of the month & of course I was right.🫣
This wasn't just a yearning, second chance romance.THIS WAS FATED MATES but make it contemporary and add some crime scenes inside.💍
To continue, our characters were absolutely amazing.
Sadie, came back after 2 years, and you can sense it in the air that things are more complicated than what she wants us to believe that are. However, deep inside she is just a lover girl that wants the romance ,that she thought that was stole from her, with the love of her life.Personally,I adored both her lovely as sassy scenes, and I can say she is woman material!🤌🏻
Brenden,on the other side is A CERTIFIED lover boy (where do I sing for him?)& HE SHOWS THAT.Like to the point,he does not even hide it-if you ask me THAT IS what won our girl back!🫶🏻
More,I think his overall character development was more that perfect,to the point that we had a lost alone man in the beginning ,and we left him terribly in love and his arms filled with a kind of a happiness that even in his wildest dreams would not think that he would get.
Ending, their romance was long, slow and wonderful while being so fiery that be careful not to burn you.🔥
Out On Apr,2nd 🍾

✨ Secrets, second chances, and a man absolutely down bad… say less.

First off—huge thank you to the author and PR team for the ARC 🖤

This book had me hooked way faster than I expected. The book pulled me in with a mix of emotion, tension, and just enough lighthearted moments to keep it addictive.

Let’s talk about Brenden… because wow. This man is gone for her—and not even a little subtle about it 😂. He’s persistent, soft in all the right ways, and completely devoted. The kind of hero who doesn’t walk away, doesn’t hold back, and honestly? I was eating it up. He brought so much charm and humor to the story, but also this deeper layer of longing that made everything hit harder.

Sadie, on the other hand, comes back into his life carrying a lot of history—and you can feel it immediately. There’s tension, things left unsaid, and this underlying emotional weight that keeps you invested in how it’s all going to unfold. Their connection still lingers, even after everything, and watching them navigate that again was messy, complicated, and really engaging.

The romance builds steadily—soft at times, intense at others—and by the end, it delivers that emotional payoff. It’s sweet, swoony, and just a little fiery 🔥

That said, I did find myself wishing for a bit more depth in certain areas. Some of the heavier topics felt like they could’ve been explored further, and I wouldn’t have minded more time with a few side characters. There were also a couple moments that didn’t fully land for me—but nothing that took away from the overall experience.

In the end, this leans more toward fun and heartfelt than heavy angst, and it works. If you love second-chance romance with a lovable, slightly chaotic hero who is all in, this one is definitely worth picking up.

ARC REVIEW

Firstly thank you to Bretta Elaine and LoveNotes PR for my advanced copy of Secrets and Second Chances, book 4 in the Willow Hill Series.

This was the first Bretta Elaine book that I’ve read and I can certainly say her writing style makes for a great read. The dual POV seamlessly flows and is easy to immerse yourself right into the characters lives. I would definitely read more!

Tropes include:
She’s his boss
Secret baby
Second chance romance
Friends to lovers
Workplace romance
Law enforcement

My comments on the read:
Jackson - ick I didn’t even see coming. I can safely say I did not predict this characters involvement and outcome but, boy bye.

Romance - this was an inevitable romance, two characters destined to be together and the MMC was just the sweetest. Both characters are impossible not to love and root for, their chemistry and history just make you fall in love with them being in love.

Griff and Bren - this was one of my favourite relationships throughout the read. Inseparable goofy brothers with a bromance like no other which had me wanting more.

Details - the only thing that would have made me enjoy this read even more than I already did, would be including more detail and depth on some of the scenes and subjects but as a whole I don’t feel this took away from my experience with the story.

Overall I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of this read and would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a rom-com, easy read that leaves you needing to find yourself a man as doting and in love as

Antecdotal thoughts while reading
Willow Hill Series, Book 4
I have not read the prior books. The dedication page has set quite a high bar for me as a fan.
Brenden - MMC, detective, older brother
Sadie - FMC, instantaneous wingwoman, former detective partner to Brenden
Is the house being sold?
New hire could spell changes...
Oh no Sadie!! What a way to have your day ruined.
Oh snap.
Why does Jackson text sound like trouble brewing???
Oh wow. Butterfly tat, you apparently have skills.
Is Sadie moving in??
Is Leighton LQBTQIA+?
Oh 💩!!! With Audra?!?!?!
A kiddo? Brenden???
A man who goes to therapy 👍 medication for depression 👍
Chief...you went there on day 1 😆
Oh to go across the town and complete those returns 🤣
And isn't that what you did Sadie??
Second part of the plan sounds like a good time.
Campbell, adopted?? Guardianship?
Ok, what's this big daddy for Griff?? Is he engagement ring shopping?? A new tat?
Oh sh*t!! Confirmed
Do you have a fever Bren?
OMG!!! The bathroom scene 🤣🤣🤣
Why Sadie? That's what I keep thinking.
Nothing good happens when you angry ride a motorcycle. Please don't Brenden.
"smother brother" 😆
Erikson I do NOT like where your voice and words are going!
Jackson is going to be on the porch any second people.
Griff, the orangescicle was a hit.
I have a bad feeling about Jackson's departure.

This book is a 2.5 stars. I recieved the eARC from bookfunnel for free.

To give this book the benefit of the doubt, I haven't read the first three books of the series. So even though it says it can be read as a standalone, and no big information seemed to be missing from the book, I wasn't connected to the characters as much as someone who has read the whole series would be.

I found the characters lacking depth and motive at times. The book is a second chance romance centered around a miscommunication and a secret pregnancy/ baby. Even though Sadie had her reasons to not tell Brenden, I still think she should have told him sooner.

The writing was also pretty cheesy and I found Brenden to be pretty cheesy as well. He had some sweet moments like letting Sadie use his bed, but buying every air mattress in the town to do that is a little over the top for me. Brenden is the king of acts of service, so if that's your love language you're going to love him.

Sadie is a tough character and I appreciate the motivation she has to advance in her career and build a good life for her son. I do really like her friendship with Leighton. I think she balances out Sadie and isn't afraid to tell her the hard truth when necessary.

This book just wasn't for me, but I'm grateful to have recieved an eARC of it.

This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

I was immediately intrigued by this story. It starts off with just enough background to ground you, while still leaving key pieces of the puzzle missing. It pulling you in and making you want to keep reading to understand the full picture.

Brenden and Sadie’s dynamic had me going back and forth at times. I’ll be honest, I could have done without the Audra kiss… it felt a little odd, and while Brenden’s intentions may have been good, some of his actions came across as a bit immature for where these characters are in life. That said, it did add a layer of humor and brought some lightness to the story, especially with the scheming to win Sadie back.

It takes us readers a while to get a good read on Sadie’s character but it’s hard not to fall in love with her once we learn more about her. And Brenden is completely gone for her. He’s absolutely a man on a mission, and that devotion was fun to watch. Their story definitely has some Brooklyn99 undertones in it.

The ending was unexpected in the best way and definitely left a lasting impression.
Overall, this was a good story with enjoyable characters and solid writing style. I still found myself invested up to the very end and glad I read it.

Thank you to Love Notes PR and Bretta Elaine for an advanced e-copy of Secrets and Second Chances.

This was my first book by Bretta Elaine, and now I definitely have my eye on the Willow Hill series and Anger Management now on my TBR!

The story opens with him riding off on his motorcycle, leaving his parents’ home behind for what feels like the last time. His station is about to get a new chief and what a shock when it turns out to be the love of his life… the one who disappeared without a trace. No explanation. No warning. Nothing. Nada!

As the story unfolds, everything comes full circle for both of them. He’s been holding onto a secret ever since she came back into his life but why risk ruining the second chance they’ve been given? Especially when she unknowingly bought his parents’ home. And let’s not forget… she has secret of her own.

You’ll have to keep reading to uncover it all. It truly does come full circle! 🫶

This story reminded me of the saying, “donde hubo fuego, cenizas quedan”—where there was once fire, the ashes remain. The chemistry between them is undeniable. The spice? Definitely delivering! 🌶️🌶️🌶️

Their love is powerful, deep, and bigger than anything—and in the end, they have something truly special to celebrate. ❤️

I'm a little at a loss about what to say in this review... I really enjoyed the first half of this book, but then found the second half to be lackluster (and kind of annoying, honestly).

I felt like the book was trying to do too much (especially in the second part). Namely, the FMC hid having a baby from the MMC, then there's frustration with another male character, an issue about lying about the house, and a workplace issue. It felt like there was no relief period before something else came up.

In addition, the characters became increasingly frustrating. Firstly, Bren (MMC) forgave Sadie waaaay too quickly for the fact that she DID NOT TELL HIM ABOUT HAVING HIS CHILD. Then there was continued miscommunication when Bren didn't tell Sadie about the house.

Sadie became increasingly annoying as the book continued. She really lacked emotional maturity and was blaming Bren for lying to her despite the fact that she made the ultimate lie of HIDING HIS CHILD.

Ultimately, I liked half the book but really didn't like the other half. As such, I gave it a rating of 2.5/5.

Tropes:
Secret baby
Golden retriever MMC
Second-chance romance
Miscommunication
No third act breakup
Workplace romance (she's his boss)
Found family
Spice - 3/5.

Thank you to lovenotespr for the opportunity to read this book as an arc.

Listen, if you were reading my live thoughts of the book, those lovely little status updates, you might think that I didn't like this book. In actuality, it was kind of cute, and once we got closer to the end, I was giggling a few times. The romantic relationship was nice, once we got past all of the secrets and lies...which wasn't until maybe about 90% of the book.

While we know I didn't like the secrets and lies, there were a couple of other things I didn't like. Maybe, this would've changed if I had read the books previous in the series, but as this was my first....

- The friend group. And not just the MMC's, but the one friend of the FMCs. They were allllllll so annoying.
- The comparison in the book to Brooklyn 99. Listen. You can like the show, and be inspired by the show, but don't compare this book to that show. For one, Jake would NEVER do to Amy what had been done to our FMC, even for shits and giggles. That man communicated.

Overall, this was an okay book. Didn't hate it but didn't love it.

Sex Stuff:
- 3 explicit scenes.
- Exhibitionism is the kinkiest it got.

Secrets and Second Chances by Bretta Elaine gave me exactly the kind of emotional, messy, second chance romance I love getting lost in. This one pulled me in pretty quickly, especially with that history between the characters. You can feel right from the start that there is so much unresolved tension sitting just beneath the surface.

I also appreciated how the story slowly unpacks what actually happened in the past. The secrets and miscommunication weren’t just thrown in for drama, they had weight behind them. Watching those layers get peeled back kept me invested because I needed to know what really went wrong and if they could find their way back to each other.

The romance itself had a lot of heart. There are definitely some swoony moments and that sense of “I never really got over you” that just hits. At times I did wish for a little more depth in certain emotional moments, especially when it came to fully resolving everything from the past. Some parts felt a bit quick for how heavy the situation was, which is why it sits at a solid four stars for me.

Overall, this was an engaging and emotional read with strong second chance vibes, plenty of tension, and characters you can root for even when they’re making messy choices. If you love stories about past love coming back around and forcing everything into the open, this one is definitely worth picking up.

What a lovely little palette cleanser between my reads! This book was filled with good one-liners, humour and you guessed it… secrets!

Our main characters Brenden and Sadie kick off the story by sharing a night of passion that they’ve been craving since they started working together as partners in the police. The next day Sadie is gone and disappears for 2 years without a trace!

Skip to the present and we have Brenden still a detective with a new sergeant on the way that just so happens to be our fmc Sadie to his absolute surprise. There’s a lot of revelations and secrets to be uncovered as to why she left and her return. But she’s hiding another pretty massive secret.

I really did enjoy this love story of them reconnecting and rebuilding something they once had from the start. I think that Brenden was very quick to want her back after leaving for so long with no explanation. However, I can understand it reflects how strongly he feels about Sadie even when she’s done what she did. Would have loved to have seen a bit more grovelling on Sadie’s side.

However, very easy read, likeable characters and story. I gave this book 4 ⭐ and would happily read other books by Bretta Elaine!

Here’s a taste of what to expect:
🏡 Small Town
💞 Second Chance
💼 Workplace Romance
👀 Forced Proximity
🍼 Secret Baby
🤭 She's His Boss (Detective Sergeant x Detective)

I absolutely devoured this book! Secrets and Second Chances by Bretta Elaine was a spicy, small town romance that hit all the feels that get me sucked in: dual POV, flashbacks to flashforwards, small town vibe, an independent FMC, a MMC working to win her back, secrets and of course, second chances.

I read it as a standalone but it's actually book four in the series. After reading it, I definitely added books 1-3 to my TBR. Sadie and Brenden open the book together in a steamy scene that has you hopeful for a happily ever after only for her to disappear unexpectedly. Flash forward to present day where Brenden is making a name for himself at the local police department waiting on a new sergeant. Enter Sadie as his boss and the questions start flowing. Why is she back? Where did she go? Why did she go? No spoilers here but expect to have your jaw dropped a few times as we get the answers.

Favorite parts: an incident with air mattresses, the group chat with Brenden with his guy friends girlfriends and a definite picture perfect ending the characters deserve!

In a book slump? Let this be your next read to give you a second chance at getting back into it!

Brenden and Sadie is the fourth book in the Willow Hill series,
one night Brenden and Sadie allow their feelings out.
Then the next morning Sadie disappears.
Brenden is confused by this. And heartbroken.
2 years later Sadie Suddenly returns to Willow Hills
the tension is popping between them  undeniable. But the trust has been broken.
But the feelings are still there.
The author handle the heavy themes in the book with grace and made it feel a little bit more authentic.
sexism in the workplace, mental health struggles, grief.
Which added depth to the story without being overwhelming.
Brenden and Sadie growth. Was beautiful to read. Their path to healing and forgiveness really felt like they earned it. , making their second chance that much more satisfying.
this book is warm and cozy with real  emotion. With a side order of humor and heartbreak.
The found family in this series was hands down one that will stick with me. they way they show up for each other. sooo good.

thank you Bretta Elaine and Love Notes PR for the ARC of "Secrets and Second Chances" beautifully written.

I was lucky to receive an ARC copy of Secrets and Second Chances by Bretta Elaine.

This is book 4 in the Willow Hill series. It can be read as a standalone.

Brenden and Sadie's story is a light feel good rom-com. It starts off with Brenden and Sadie being partners at the Willow Hill PD. Both harbored feelings for one another. Finally they cross the line one wild night. But instead of the next day being their new beginning Sadie takes off. Disappearing for two years with no reason given.

⌛Two years later she returns to Willow Hill taking the Detective Sergeant job. She comes back to make history as she's the first female in this role, but she also comes back for Brenden. Can he forgive her when he finds out her secret?

Brenden's antics are over the top at times. You can't help but laugh. Even though this book had me cracking up at the ridiculousness of Brenden. The love and forgiveness was beautiful.

4 ⭐️

Secrets and Second Chances is a second chance romance that balances laugh out loud humor with heartfelt emotion.

As the fourth book in the Willow Hill series, it follows Brenden and Sadie, starting two years in the past when they were partners on the police force. After one night where long suppressed feelings finally come to the surface, everything seems to shift… until Sadie disappears the next morning, leaving Brenden confused and heartbroken. When she suddenly returns to Willow Hill two years later, the tension between them is immediate and undeniable. Despite the secrets they’re both holding onto and the broken trust between them, their connection never truly faded.

One of the standout aspects of this book, and the series as a whole, is the strong sense of found family. The Willow Hill crew truly feels like a village, always showing up for one another through every high and low. Their unwavering support for Brenden, especially as he deals with insecurity, grief, and the unknown when it comes to Sadie adds so much warmth to the story.

The story also handles heavier themes in a way that made them feel authentic, including sexism in the workplace, mental health struggles, grief, and guilt. I felt these themes added depth to the story without overwhelming the romance, allowing both Brenden and Sadie to grow individually and together. Their path to healing and forgiveness feels earned, making their second chance that much more satisfying.

Overall, this book is warm and emotional. It balances humor and heartbreak beautifully. It’s easily my favorite in the series and am so happy to have had the chance to experience this story. Congratulations and thank you Bretta Elaine and Love Notes PR for an advanced reader copy of Secrets and Second Chances!

I wanted to say thank you Bretta Elaine and Love Notes PR for sending this amazing ARC. This is my first ARC!
I’m going to lie I love the author knows how to create a romance that just feels good to read this book had me smiling the whole time. It’s soft, a little messy in fun way, and full of those sweet moments that make you fall for the characters so easily.

I love how natural everything felt the relationship, the banter, the chemistry. Brenden was so funny with Griffin that I couldn’t stop laughing and swigging my feet. Sadie completely stole my heart. She’s strong, brave, and just someone you can’t help but root for.

What I enjoyed most is that this story doesn’t try to be overly heavy. It focuses on the connection, the feelings, and the little moments that makes a romance special. You’re really just living in the present with them, and it makes the whole story feel light, comforting, and genuine.

If you’re in the mood for something sw, a little spicy, and full of heart, this one is definitely worth picking up!!!

Title: Secrets & Second Chances
Series: Willow Hill (Book 4)
Author: Bretta Elaine
Genre: Romancey
Release Date: April 2, 2026
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (4/5)

This book was such a sweet, easy read. It's a cosy small town romance. The setting is charming, and the romance is gentle. Both main characters felt relatable and very grounded, especially with their mix of past regrets and new hopes. It really makes their whole journey back to each other feel more realistic and not rushed. I liked how you could feel their hesitation and emotions, which makes their interactions feel more natural.

Overall, this is an all-around wholesome, cutesy romance. It's not overly dramatic and focuses on healing and the idea that it's never too late. The Characters are charming and have plenty of heart. Perfect if you're looking for a light-hearted feel-good book.

Oh, Bretta Elaine has done it again. Secrets and Second Chances is an utter delight. It’s warm and loving, chaotic and whimsical. It’s sexy and it’s heartfelt. Nothing is too deep, yet there is so much heart in the story and in every facet of these characters. Brenden is hilarious, particularly with Griffin. Sadie is lovely and fierce and oh so brave and she deserves the world.

Willow Hill continues to deliver lighthearted but heartfelt romance and I, for one, love it. Part of me wishes that these stories were longer, with more time spent delving into our protagonists’ pasts, but that’s not what this series is for; we’re in it for the here and now, the love and chemistry that the characters are experiencing in that moment, no matter what has happened before and what might happen later. It’s just pure joy and sex and love and I love it.

Thank you to Bretta Elaine and Love Notes PR for providing me with an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

i’ve never giggled more than when i read secrets & second chances 🤭 i mean #mattressgate alone was ridiculous?! and also so f*cking cute?! 🤣 bren really just has a special heart. and sadie girl… your inner dialogue is what had me laughing the most! the “dictionary” at the back of the books (“di€k-tionary) almost feels like it came straight from the “girls group” scheming in the book (IYKYK) 👀 it’s a list of chapters “to find or skip the spice” and i thought that was a really cool touch!

so yeah, easy 5⭐️ read for me and the 🌶️ was spicing… now i need the rest of everything bretta has ever written! thank you so much bretta & love notes PR for the opportunity to read this early✨

and to the future readers, here is what to expect:
🏡 small town
💞 second chance
💼 workplace romance
👀 forced proximity
