A fake relationship with the Wolves’ star goalie might be the realest thing she’s ever known.

Lyla Wayne had it all—popularity, football quarterback boyfriend, and a packed social calendar. But after tragedy flips her world upside down, she finds herself on the outside of everything she once knew. Isolated, spiraling, and desperate for a fresh start, the last thing she expects is Wyatt Scott.

Wyatt isn’t just the top goalie in college hockey—he’s steady, loyal, and has been quietly nursing a broken heart over Lyla, the girl who’s always been just out of reach. So when a fake relationship with his longtime crush offers a shot at something real, he doesn’t hesitate to play along… even if it risks everything.

Can they turn pretend into something real and finally write the love story that never had a chance to start, or will it all fall apart before the final buzzer?

For fans of The Deal by Elle Kennedy and Icebreaker by Hannah Grace, Deking is an emotional, slow-burn college sports romance you won’t want to miss. Grab your copy—your next Walker Wolves favorite is waiting.

I came into this hoping for a cozy hockey romance, and it really delivered in a soft, emotional way.

Wyatt completely won me over with how steady, patient, and genuinely kind he is. He shows his love through actions, which made every moment with him feel grounded and meaningful.

Lyla’s story added a deeper layer than I expected. Watching her balance school while caring for her father brought a lot of heart to the story and made her resilience stand out. The fake dating trope leans more tender than tense, and while I did wish for a bit more chemistry and buildup at times, especially with their history, their connection still felt sincere and easy to root for.

What stayed with me most was the emotional core and the strong sense of found family. The friendships, quiet support, and heavier themes gave the story a comforting warmth.

It is the kind of book you read for the feelings, not just the plot, and overall it left me with a soft, full kind of feeling by the end.

I do love a good hockey romance and Deking didn’t disappoint.

This is book five in the Walker University series featuring Wyatt and Lyla. This found family, fake dating romance had all the right chemistry as well as a fabulous cast of side characters. Wyatt is the goalie of the hockey team and utter perfection, his loyalty, his protective nature and the way he supports everyone is next level. Lyla is a nursing student facing the toughest moments of her life dealing with her dad’s illness and her love and support for her family is truly beautiful. Together Wyatt and Lyla are even more special. This was truly a beautiful emotional read leaving you feel so many emotions. It does deal with a few heavy topics which were beautifully written. Even though this is book five in the series it is perfect as a standalone story, I personally hadn’t read the prior books in the series. Highly recommended this one!

I really enjoyed this book. My first one by this author and considering this is book five I need to go read the other four. I absolutely loved the side characters too.

I am all for a fake dating book and add in hockey, ummm yes please! Wyatt is everything you want in a MMC. He knows what he wants and he is so patient with the FMC Lyla. He waits patiently for her and helps her by fake dating her.

I don't want to give anything away but this book is so good. You have hockey, found family, fake dating and so mych more. Just love this and so glad found another author to enjoy.

1000000stars ! By far my most favorite book in this series !

Wyatt is the truest of all Gentlemen. He was patient. He knew he liked Lyla, and waited til her conceited, aggressive and demanding football qb ex dumped her. He swooped in offered her a scapegoat but showed her how a real man steps up in friendship, in a relationship, in love, with family and friends.

This relationship blossomed into the most romantic relationship I’ve ever read. Wyatt not only loved her but respected her, her career goals, her school, her family, her responsibilities.

And formed a beautiful relationship with her ill father, and such a fun and friendly relationship with her brother. The ending definitely had me shedding a few tears, for the pain, grief, but also love and joy they all accomplish.

Old characters from previous books in this series make beautiful cameos and the friendship is remarkable. I absolutely enjoyed this entire book.

I could not put this book down! If sleep wasn’t a necessity I would have finished this in one sitting. I’m so glad we finally have Wyatt’s story. As usually for this series the found family was super strong throughout the book and finally Wyatt was the one to have the favor returned with his friends helping him and giving him advice. I’m obsessed with the slow relationship build up between Wyatt and Lyla. It was absolutely perfect for them considering how they met and their “history”. This book had me laughing, crying, awe-ing. Just all the vibes wrapped into one.

I’m so sad that this series is over. By far this is one of my favorite college series and found family series. It’s just done so perfectly. How do I read this whole series again for the first time?!?!

Fake dating
Found family

I love a man with a goal and this book definitely delivered that.

This was such an emotional read. It touches on some heavier topics, but it’s handled in a really beautiful and engaging way. The romance felt meaningful, and I loved the emotional depth behind it.

This is technically book 5 in the series, but I read it as a standalone and had no issues following along. Nothing felt confusing or out of place.

Overall, a really enjoyable hockey romance, and I’ll definitely be picking up more from this author ❤️✨

Deking: (derived from "decoy") is a fundamental ice hockey move where a puck carrier uses stickhandling, fakes, or body movements to trick a defender or goalie, allowing them to pass by or create scoring opportunities.
I LOVE a fake dating trope. Add in some pining, and low-key stalking by a hot Hockey god?! Yes, please! The found family dynamic that the team and their wives/girlfriends have created is just, chef’s kiss, perfection. Our MMC, Wyatt only has eyes for her, he’s patient, protective, and willing to give her anything, even if it’s creating the slowest burn…
Thank you for the ARC Cala Riley! Loved your book!

Deking by Cala Riley

🏒🏒🏒🏒🏒

I love Wyatt. Sorry Lyla, but he is my favourite Wolves hockey player in this series. I was so excited for his book, and as always, these authors did not disappoint! One of my favourite tropes is fake dating, so I was eager for it!

Wyatt is a phenomenal friend, as seen in previous books, but he was always quietly reserved, and we only caught glimpses of his personality. He has such a gentle nature, and as he starts coming out of his shell more after spending time with Lyla, his circle embraces the change, and they love it.

Lyla is such a sweetheart, doing everything she can to stay a good university student while also acting as a full-time caregiver alongside her brother for their father with dementia. I loved seeing her relationship with her brother and dad.

Cala Riley gives us such real, heartwarming, and heartbreaking stories filled with found family, and the conclusion to the Wolves storyline was perfect.

I really enjoyed this quick, fun read. It did hit some emotional highs and it had everything in a romance/fake dating book that you would want. I am fairly new to sports romances and haven't read very many of them, but I did really enjoy this one. I do wish I would have read the previous books in the series to get to know the other characters first, but it was still very good without reading the others.

Get ready to have Wyatt make you swoon.

What a journey. I absolutely adored Wyatt and Lyla. The angst, the mixed signals, the romance, all keeps you hooked and wanting more more more.

The way he loved her just made me all gooey inside. I loved the bond they make, and the bonds with the hockey family, it felt so special.

This is an emotional read. And i loved it all

Absolutely adored Wyatt !!
Deking by Cala Riley is the final book in their Walker University series. We have followed all the hockey guys find their partners and now it’s Wyatt’s turn. His romance with Lyla Wayne is is a bit more complicated because she has always been the one he wanted. To make his dreams come true, their relationship starts off as a fake. Will all his plotting and planning work out or will she feel manipulated and betrayed by him. Can he persuade her that his feelings are real and to him it was never fake. Be prepared to lose your heart as Wyatt is SWOON overload and you won’t believe what he goes through to get her. Could he be the man she needs.

‘The one who got away, yet the one I never really had to begin with .”

In the previous books we have seen what a lovely and kind guy Wyatt Scott is, so caring of everyone and always there to help. He was there for his best friend Brett with Emery and became a great friend to Kellan, giving him some good advice. He also had an inkling what was going on between Beckett and Peyton. I was really looking forward to his story because we found out that Lyla is the woman he wants but she was dating someone else.

Wyatt is the Wolves star goalie and Clay chose him to move into the hockey house. He doesn’t speak much and is good at grunting. He suffered a tragedy in his childhood and was raised by his uncle. The moment he saw Lyla in their freshman year, it was love at first sight but he was too nervous to ask her out. He then lost his chance when she started dating Kyle, the QB and his waiting and yearning began. However, he was patient and kept a check on her while biding his time. She had captured his attention so he’s determined that she will be his girlfriend somehow.

Lyla’s life changed when her father fell ill. Her brother Will, quit his job and they all moved into a house together near her college so she could continue her studies. Now she is juggling classes and sharing looking after her dad with Will. She has hidden what is happening with her dad and her new responsibilities haven’t gone down well with her boyfriend.

Wyatt knows Lyla is something special and for three years he has been praying for them to break up. When he hears Kyle has ended things, Wyatt realises he has finally got the opportunity he’s been waiting for. However, circumstances make him come up with the idea of her being his fake girlfriend. Lyla is shocked as he never dates and is the most popular person on campus. To him she’s now his and he’s never letting her go. It’s fun when Brett, Clay and Beckett all tease him about his secret girlfriend.

He knows she’s hiding something and hopes she’ll trust him enough to tell him. He is so protective and thoughtful. He does so many little things for her and I laughed when he changed her phone background photo. She sees how different he is with her and starts to wonder if he would be like this as a real boyfriend. There is a bit of drama with Kyle and a fantastic scene with Wyatt’s cousin. It was lovely how Lyla grows in confidence and starts getting a sense of belonging with the other hockey guys. I loved how Jason and Calvin both stand up for her and how Cora, Peyton, Grace and Emery support her by showing her what true friends are.

She makes him smile and allows him to be himself but Is it a dangerous game pretending their relationship is fake. To him she’s worth the risk but will it backfire on him? She has no idea how he really feels. The story takes an emotional turn as things get even more complicated for the couple.

This was my favourite of the series, Wyatt and Lyla were great and I loved the journey they went on. I couldn’t put it down as wanted to know how he was going to pursue her to date him for real.
It was so sweet how he made sure everyone was happy and mentored the younger guys. He sacrificed his personal life to wait for her and was never going to give up as he knew he loved her. He supported and cared for her in every way he could and took the time to show her what life with him could be like. Fantastic epilogue to bring an end to the series, I’ll miss the Wolves players.

I received an ARC for my honest opinion.

First off, the moment I found out this book was going to be about Wyatt, I knew I needed to read it. By the end of the first book, I was already convinced that his story would show him as one of the absolute best book boyfriends ever, and I was not disappointed. I will admit that I didn’t read books 2 through 4 yet, but that honestly didn’t take away from my experience. This series works well as standalones, though I can already tell I’ll be going back to read the others soon.

In this story we get to follow Lyla and Wyatt, and their journey was everything I hoped it would be. Wyatt has known about Lyla since the first time they met, and he never truly forgot about her. He simply waited for the right moment, and when her relationship with her ex finally ended, he stepped in without hesitation. The fake dating setup was such a fun and engaging trope. It gave them both something they needed, Lyla gets help keeping her persistent ex at a distance, while Wyatt finally has a chance to spend real time with the girl he’s always wanted. And of course, the possibility of fake turning into real made the entire story even more exciting.

What really made this book stand out for me was how well the author allowed readers to truly get to know Wyatt. His loyalty, patience, and protective nature were impossible not to fall in love with. The pacing felt steady and natural, and as I got closer to the end, I found myself not wanting the story to be over.

The chemistry between Lyla and Wyatt was another huge highlight. Their banter felt genuine, their emotional connection developed in a believable way, and I loved watching their friendship slowly grow into something deeper. There were moments where their vulnerability really shined, especially as they opened up about their struggles, responsibilities, and fears. I will admit there were a few times when this book had me tearing up. Wyatt being the steady support Lyla needed, especially as she dealt with her father’s dementia and the lingering grief from losing parents at a young age, was handled in such a heartfelt and thoughtful way.

At the same time, the romance brought plenty of swoony moments. Their tension, attraction, and emotional bond created a relationship that felt both comforting and exciting. I definitely found myself fanning my face more than once.

Overall, this was an emotional, heartwarming, and engaging hockey romance that delivered on so many levels. If you enjoy tropes like he falls first, fake dating, protective heroes, found family, and slow-burn chemistry, this is absolutely a book you should pick up. I am already looking forward to reading more in the Walker University series.

I would like to thank HamBright for the opportunity to review this book.

(I received an ARC for this book)

trigger warnings will be at the bottom of this review, to avoid spoilers
This book has a heavy focus on a parent with a medical condition and the FMC is a caretaker. I will include more in-depth information at the bottom to avoid spoilers. There is also discussion of the loss of loved ones, sports injury, and mean girl words/bullying.

Wyatt ticked off those book boyfriend boxes pretty quickly. First with a meet-cute, and then claiming Lyla at a party to piss off the ex. By then, though, he’s not faking anything. He’s had years to fall for her, she just needs to catch up. It’s not stalking if it’s cute, right? Wyatt Scott is the kind of grumbling, grunting, grumpy goalie I love. And the reason I love that kind of goalie so much: he melts just for her. And his found family sees it. The same found family I adore, and that Lyla fits perfectly into. I didn’t think I could love this team and their significant others more, but then they rallied around Lyla when she needed them most. There’s a lot of heaviness, but Wyatt never wavers. He’s always right there in every way that Lyla needs most. And no matter what life hands her, she is a force to be reckoned with. They’re a perfect fit, and I love it in every way.

My Favorite Quotes:
• “You’re my girl now. I protect what’s mine.”
• “As long as I am with you, the rest doesn’t matter.”
• “You want to ride my face so bad? I’m doing it properly. Now grab the headboard and enjoy the ride.”

This book was so so good! I was hooked from the very beginning and I didn’t want to put it down. A hockey romance is always my go to, but this one was more than I could’ve expected. It’s so flawlessly written and Cala Riley really pulls out all the emotions in this book. You’re being swooned at one point and your heart is literally aching the next. Truly such an emotionally raw and utterly sweet book that had my heart in a choke hold the entire time.

Wyatt left me speechless. Goodness he the definition of a book boyfriend. He is protective, charming, caring, selfless, and a very good friend. He was quiet and slightly moody until he was brought of shell by Lyla. He saw her from across the room his freshman year and never let her out of his sight (he may be considered slightly stalkerish, but it truly was with the sweetest intentions). Lyla is a very stoic, strong, resilient woman with the biggest heart. She’s left caring for her dad (who has dementia). But when she breaks up with her long term boyfriend, Wyatt takes the chance to shoot his shot, only it’s in the form of fake dating — Lyla gets back at her ex, and Wyatt keeps the puck bunnies at bay. But we all know fake dating never stays fake, especially when one has his heart all the way in it from the get go.

Watching these two fake date was so dang cute. Wyatt may have been faking, but he was pulling out all the stops. He was swoony, adorably sweet, and patient. He gave Lyla the time to figure out her feelings and for her to know that this was never fake for him. I really loved seeing their story come together. They are a true perfect couple that really do have the natural chemistry of being friends first. It’s easy, fun, and so sweet.

As if these two aren’t enough to convince you to read this, the found family in this book is *chef kiss*. It may actually be my favorite thing about this book. The teammates for Wyatt are truly thick as thieves and it runs deep with them. The banter they have is just like any true friends would have. And the girls bringing in Lyla to their group was like watching a sisterhood unite. It really was heart warming to see.

This book is the last in the series, and although I have not read any of the previous ones, it was still easy to follow. It did make me invested in the other relationships so I’ll be going back to read the other books.

This was an ARC read for me, and these are my honest opinions.

SLOW BURN ROMANCE WITH EPIC HEA!!

I loved this story because it deals with real life sacrifices and loss of parents in a graceful way. Now don't let this be the only factor in this book when deciding to read it, because Wyatt and Lyla have a unique love story that just has a lot of emotional moments that make you feel how grateful and cherished little moments can be.

Now let's talk perfect book boyfriend Wyatt here and YES HE'S DEFINITE PERFECTION!! He had a crush on Lyla since freshman orientation and even tried to shoot his shot freshman year but he was shy and things didn't go his way. Over the next three years he watches her and waits for another shot and fate finally bring it to him. Lyla breaks up with a ungrateful narcissist footballer QB and Wyatt comes to her rescue with a proposed fake dating relationship for them. Only he's not faking his love & obsession for his girl and he proves he's willing to do anything to just be in her world. Get ready to have a few loving sighs on this guy's actions and maybe a few heated moments as well. Who knew this un-talkative grumpy goalie could have a good dirty talking game and I was so here for it!!

Lyla was a sweetheart of a character who tried her best to please everyone and even those who never really deserved her loyalty. She sacrificed her college life with her brother who shared responsibility for the exhaustive care of their father. A issue she tried to not speak about with her so called friends or a jerk of a ex- boyfriend. She never felt that true bond of friendship or love with these individuals so why does she get all the feels with a fake relationship?? Well Wyatt is a one of a kind man who makes the lines blur and feelings exceed expectations of what could be.

So buckle up because yes this is definitely a slow burn romance but it packs the feels and weaves in emotional moments with a little naughty spice to round it out. You can expect emotional moments, grief, fake dating relationship, annoying ex, hockey action, grumpy/sunshine, found family vibes, dirty talking, and a HEA you will be rooting for!! Definitely recommend this one if you want something relatable that packs all the feels with a bit of the sports romance vibes as well this is a must read!!

If you are looking for a sports romance with fake dating and true found family, this is the book for you. Deking is book 5 in an interconnected standalone series, Walker University, by Cala Riley. Firstly, I would like to thank Cala Riley for giving me an ARC. Importantly, this may contain triggering content, so please check the trigger/ content warnings.

Deking was absolutely an amazing story that was so addicting, I read it in less than 24 hours and could not put it down. As it is an interconnected standalone series, you don't need to read the other books before; it is recommended. It did not feel like I needed to read the other books before this one; it has its own story and plot. Each part and trope was written so well, especially for each character and their story. The plot and certain events had me shocked, and other parts had me emotional. There is so much about this story that I love. I highly recommend you read this book, and while you wait for release day, why not read the other 4 books in the series?

Wyatt and Layla's relationship and story were written so well and show how a woman should be treated by a man. One thing I do have to say, I am glad Layla and her ex-boyfriend separated, he is a piece of trash and many other things I can't say. Even though they are fake-dating, it felt more like they were actually dating the whole time. Layla was my favourite character. I loved how much strength she had for what she was going through, and many other things that I don't want to spoil. Seeing her character growth was amazing, and watching the found family aspect for her was amazing, seeing her become herself more. Wyatt was amazing. I loved how much pining and yearning for Layla there is, and how he treats her so much better than her ex. He was so supportive of her and helped her when she needed. There is so much I could talk about but I highly recommend reading this book and pick it up on release day (24/03/2026). Happy reading.

DEKING is the fifth instalment in Cala Riley’s contemporary, new adult WALKER UNIVERSITY erotic, hockey romance series. This is university goalie Wyatt Scott, and nursing student Lyla Wayne’s story line. DEKING can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. An important information is revealed where necessary.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Lyla and Wyatt) DEKING focuses on the building romance and relationship between our story line couple. Three years earlier Wyatt Scott fell head over heels for someone else’s girl. Fast forward to present day, Lyla discovers her boyfriend of three years isn’t the man she thought he was,and having witnessed the betrayal,Wyatt offers up a fake relationship in an effort to get close to the woman with whom he had fallen in love but where Wyatt is hoping for forever,Lyla believes there is an end dead, in the near future.

The world building follows Wyatt’s hockey career as the team journeys towards another championship, as Lyla struggles with personal issues at home. The ex-boyfriend doesn’t want to let go, as the jealous girls take aim at our story line heroine.

The relationship begins as a meet cute but Lyla is in a committed relationship, or so she thought.Wyatt will bide his time waiting for the woman who stole his heart,a woman who has no idea Wyatt is the one. As Wyatt begins a slow seduction of our story line heroine, Lyla begins to fall for the man she will push out of her life. The $ex scenes are intimate and intense without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

The secondary and supporting characters are familiar and charismatic including the return of the previous story line couples. We are introduced to Lyla’s brother Will, their father Jerry, nurse Rachelle, and Lyla’s ex Kyle.

DEKING is a story of secrets and lies, family and friendships, relationships and love. The character driven premise is entertaining and captivating; the romance is fated and passionate;the characters are energetic, determined and dynamic.

I cried. Full on blubber baby tears because Wyatt Scott is the kind of man that every girl needs her in her life, especially one such as Lyla.

Cala & Riley have truly out done themselves with this book. So much goodness has already come from the wolves... but to have this team, this family of trust and love expanded, as we go on the journey of their grumpy goalie getting his girl is WONDERFUL.

Those moments where you read and your whole body just leans in closer to the pages because you just have to know what happens next...yeah I had about 407 of those moments while reading.

Lyla is one of the most developed female main characters I have read in a while. Not just her own journey being believable as she goes about life, but her growth and her emotions along the way as she navigates her relationship with wyatt.

He Falls First
Fake Dating
Hockey Sports Romance
Found Family
Parent with Dementia
Deals with Grief
Slow Burn

Wyatt is a fiercely protective an grumpy goalie in all sense of the words. However he is also sweet, thoughtful, and has a soul for romance like you wouldn't believe. The moments Wyatt has with Lyla's dad melt my little icy heart and make me believe in love.

I read a lot of sports romance, and I gotta tell you Wyatt Scott is hands down one of my favorite males I have come across. He is genuine in a way that is so easily overlooked in life nowadays let alone in college sports.

There are way too many Kyle's in the world and I am definitely a Wyatt girl. *wink wink*😉

I highly recommend diving into the world that Cala and Riley have created, not just with this book but with their others as well. These besties sure know how to write a good love story.

I received an ARC from Hambright PR and the authors and I am beyond grateful. This is my honest review and opinions and if you have read any of this series before I would love to compare notes with you. Are you a Wyatt girlie like me?

Deking by Cala Riley is one of those stories that just settles into your chest and stays there long after you’ve turned the last page. I am still thinking about this book.

I absolutely loved Wyatt and Lyla’s story. After years of quietly longing for her, Wyatt finally gets his moment to step in and capture Lyla Wayne’s attention—and what starts as a fake dating situation quickly begins to blur into something very real. Their chemistry feels natural, never forced, and watching that shift from “pretend” to genuine emotion is incredibly satisfying.

But what truly sets this book apart is the emotional weight behind Lyla’s life. She’s carrying far more than just complicated feelings—she and her brother are caring for their father as he battles dementia, and that responsibility shapes every part of who she is. There’s no room for a normal college experience, no space for carefree dating or late nights out. Her world revolves around making sure her dad is okay, even if it means putting herself on the back burner.

That aspect hit especially hard for me. The way this story mirrors real-life struggles is done with such care and authenticity. I felt every bit of what Lyla was going through—the exhaustion, the guilt, the love, and the quiet moments of heartbreak that come with it.

And then there’s Wyatt. Caring, compassionate, endlessly patient—he’s the definition of a green-flag book boyfriend. He doesn’t try to fix Lyla’s situation; he simply shows up for her, meets her where she is, and supports her in a way that feels genuine and grounded. His love is steady, and that makes it all the more powerful.

The emotions in this book run deep, but they’re handled beautifully. Nothing feels overdone or dramatized for the sake of it—it’s raw in the most honest way. Deking balances romance with real-life trauma in a way that gives depth to both the characters and their story, making it not just a love story, but a deeply human one.

Tropes- college romance, fake dating, hockey goalie, he falls first, found family, slow burn, “it’s always been you”

I can’t believe the final book in the walker university is here and I am distraught! I love this series so much and the found family!? Oh my that’s one of the things I loved about this series is that each book the group just show up for each other and welcome every love interest like they knew each other their whole lives. Lyla and Wyatt book was amazing and I read it in one sitting.

Lyla is everything to me and I will defend her to the ends of the world omg I love her so much. Lyla boyfriend broke up with her he’s an ass and I hate him, Lyla has a lot going on in her life her and her brother has been taking care of their dad for a couple of years now so she doesn’t have a lot of time to go out and make REAL friends, I love Lyla so much and I’m so happy she finally found people in her life that actually cares about her

I was hooked on Lyla and Wyatt from the very first chapter, they mean so much to me. With Lyla ex being an ass Wyatt and her end up fake dating but it was never fake to Wyatt cause he’s been wanting her for 3 years since he saw but she end up getting a boyfriend so he stayed away and played the long game

I have been waiting for Wyatt since the beginning he was so mysterious but also so sweet and caring I love him so much, his personality is just amazing. My guy finally got the girl after waiting for years, Wyatt is just everything you would want in a man he’s just too tier and going on that book boyfriend list cause why not he’s amazing

This book had me going through all the emotions especially towards the ending my tears wouldn’t stop coming. This book was sweet and very swoony I loved it so much, Wyatt and Lyla is just perfect for each other and the LONGING!? Oh my I couldn’t get enough

Thank You So Much for giving me this incredible arc !💐🖤

I was completely caught off guard with this book. I went in expecting a fun fake-dating sports romance, and while it definitely delivers on that, it also has so much more heart than I anticipated.
Lyla feels real. She’s messy, hurting, and trying to figure out who she is after everything in her life falls apart. Her journey hit me harder than I expected. You really feel her loneliness and the weight she’s carrying, but also her slow climb back toward something hopeful. It never feels rushed or forced.
The other character, Wyatt, he’s the kind of book boyfriend we all dream about. He’s not flashy or over-the-top. He is steady, patient, and deeply caring in a way that feels genuine. The fact that he’s been quietly in love with Lyla for so long could have come off as cliché, but instead it just made every interaction between them feel more meaningful. You can feel how much he sees her, even when she doesn’t see herself.
The fake relationship trope is done so well. It’s not just cute or convenient. It actually drives their emotional growth. Watching their dynamic shift from awkward and tentative to something real and vulnerable was so satisfying. The slow burn is perfect. Every little moment, every glance, every almost-confession builds in a way that keeps you completely hooked.
I also loved the college hockey setting. It adds energy to the story without overpowering it, and the team dynamics give it that cozy, found-family feel.
What really made this a five-star read for me is the emotional depth. This isn’t just about falling in love. It’s about healing, forgiveness, and letting yourself be seen again after you’ve shut the world out. By the end, I was fully invested and honestly didn’t want to leave these characters behind.
If you’re into slow-burn romance, fake dating that actually feels meaningful, and characters that grow in believable ways, this one is absolutely worth picking up.

Stars: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Spice: 🌶️🌶️

Everyone likes a mix of sweet and savory. Too much of one thing is never a good thing. While I find that most hockey romances lean on the savory side, Cala Riley has locked down the sweet side. Here is yet another heartwarming story about a hockey stud and a darling good girl, juggling life, love and of course, hockey.

Lyla Wayne is one of the lucky ones. Now in her freshman year and Walker U, she’s dating the starting quarterback and has a loving dad and brother at home. Three years later, when her father becomes sick and her boyfriend is anything but supportive, she finds herself crying at a party, humiliated and wishing she was anywhere but there. In comes Wyatt Scott, star goalie for the hockey team, to save the day. After helping her leave the party with some dignity (and popularity), he offers up a classic fake dating scenario: she’ll save him from the ever determined puck bunnies and he’ll make her ex jealous. Little does Lyla know, Wyatt has been pining for her since freshman year and sees this as the opportunity to win her heart. Months of hand holding, adorable dates, evenings with her dad and swoon worthy kisses are making her wonder if this is really fake at all. But the hard times for Lyla aren’t over and it’s up to her if she wants to let Wyatt continue to be there for her or let him go.

I loved the first book I read by the Cala Riley duo. It was incredibly innocent and adorable and this one is no different. Like the other, this one has minimal spice (maybe like 2-3 scenes max) but it’s so sweet that it’ll rot your teeth out. Also has the found family effect that I just cannot get enough of. Highly recommend this precious love story.

Deking by Cala Riley

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
🌶️🌶️🌶️

Deking is the first and final book in the Walker University Wolves series and I think it was one of the best in the series.

This fake-dating hockey romance had everything I love in the genre—emotion, swoon-worthy chemistry, humour, and a story that kept me hooked from start to finish. The tension between Lyla and Wyatt was absolutely delicious, and watching their “pretend” relationship slowly turn into something real had me smiling, stressing, and swooning all at the same time.

Wyatt is the kind of book boyfriend that makes you melt—loyal, patient, and completely devoted in a way that feels genuine and heartfelt. His quiet feelings for Lyla and the way he shows up for her when she needs someone the most made their romance feel both emotional and incredibly satisfying. Lyla’s journey was equally compelling; seeing her rebuild herself after everything she’s been through added real depth to the story and made her happily ever after feel well deserved.

The chemistry between these two was undeniable, and the mix of playful fake-dating moments, emotional vulnerability, and steamy scenes made this book impossible to put down. Add in the team dynamics and the Walker University world, and it created such a fun, immersive sports romance setting.

The tropes of this book are:

🩵 Hockey romance
🏒 Fake dating
🩵 He falls first
🏒 College / university setting
🩵 Protective hero
🏒 Found family / team dynamics
🩵 Healing from past trauma
🏒 Slow burn with spice

Overall, Deking is the perfect blend of heart, heat, and hockey. If you love fake dating, college sports romance, and heroes who fall first and fall hard, this one is an absolute must-read.

Okay so this found family is superb, such an awesome group of WUW Hockey boys & their girls. These girlies are the greatest girl gang everyone would just love to join. Especially being book 5 in the Walker University Wolves series, the group has really grown on me ... even though I still have to ready book 3 & 4.

Wyatt Scott has loved her from afar for 3 years, and now wants to shield her from public scrutiny by pretending to be her boyfriend. He wants to be whatever she needs, and hopes to turn this fake dating into something real. Because Lyla Wayne has been his endgame since the very first time he saw her.

Grumpy goalie is how Wyatt has been known since he doesn't really smile or talk a lot. But around Lyla he is different. He makes easy conversation, cares and smiles ... much to the shock of people around them.
He is so attentive, steady, humble, genuinely cares, patient, and treats her right 🥰 It's hard for her not to get real feelings when they are supposed to be just faking it.

"If this is how Wyatt Scott is when he's fake dating, I'd hate to know how good he is when it's real"

🐺 College Hockey Romance
🏒 He Falls First
🐺 Found Family
🏒 Fake Dating
🐺 Slow Burn
🏒 Protective MMC
🐺 Green Flag

This story is not just a sweet hockey romance with sizzling chemistry. No, it also has a deeper emotional layer and strong family values. Wyatt & Lyla’s story gave me all the feels, with genuine laughs, a fluttering heart and even some teary moments. A little rollercoaster of emotions before the best HEA for my favourite Walker U Wolves couple.

Deking is the last book in the Walker University series, it was bittersweet reading this one, knowing that all the guys got their own HEA, but that it's the end for the reader. It had me tearing up a few times with cameo's from the old gang, and downright bawling at one point it was so well written and beautifully wrapped up.

Wyatt is the ultimate sweethearted simp for Lyla and I'm all for it. He did his waiting, bided his time and patiently watched from afar for his chance to make a move; and while the way their relationship started wasn't exactly planned or even thought through, Wyatt isn't about to let an opportunity like this pass him by.

Lyla's life hasn't been easy the last few years but she still wouldn't change her decisions. She's one of the most thoughtful and giving people, always stretching herself thin to help others; even selfish delusional (ex)boyfriends.

Wyatt is just what Lyla needs; he's understanding of her situation, supportive in any way he can be, and encouraging her to also take care of herself too.
Lyla doesn't need someone to take all of her problems away, she needs someone who will stand beside her and work through them, supporting her when she needs it most. Seeing how Wyatt integrated himself into her life and helping out, she realises just how empty and hollow her previous relationship was.

***Spoilerish***
I balled my eyes out after Chapter 25. This hurt way more than it should have and felt really personal with how it was written, like it's from experience. A book that can get those kind of emotions across the page is 5 Stars.

This was my very first hockey romance and I enjoyed it! Wyatt was such a sweet mmc who has been pining after Lyla for years, and when he sees his chance to show her who he is, he jumps on it with a fake dating plan to keep her protected from her jerk ex.

I loved how Lyla was able to see that she deserved way better than her ex and her crappy friends, and the found family she gained with Wyatt’s friends was so sweet. I absolutely adored her relationship she formed with Cora and the girls, I got teary when they showed up for her on her doorstep for a night in, and how they supported her and her needs with her dad.

Wyatt’s and Lyla’s relationship starts out slowly as her feelings turn real, and he was so patient and sweet with her and always gave her the space she needed to figure things out.

I also really loved her relationship with her brother and her dad. It was so heartwarming to see their bond. Her father’s dementia also added another layer to this book that gave her depth and showed her’s and her brother’s kind and selfless hearts.

My only thing that I struggled with in this book is that there were a lot of side character names thrown in and it was hard to keep track of all of them. I know that if I had read other books in this series, it would probably be so great to see all of these cameos, but as someone new to the series, it was hard to follow along at some points.
