The Chosen One has a destiny. Chaddick Questwell has a to-do list. Collect payment. Upgrade his garbage equipment. Figure out who hired an assassin to kill him. Try not to die.
And while he's at it, maybe pick up a simple side-quest or two to ease the lightness of his coin purse.
With corrupt city officials blocking his hard-earned gold, a busty elf who's itching to spend it, and his loyal dog-girl paladin ready to bite anyone who threatens him, Chaddick's "simple" side-quest is starting to feel like more trouble than it's worth.
Especially with that assassin showing up at the most awkward moments. On the plus side, at least the bedroom situation is going well. And... did he hear his would-be-killer purring in the shadows? What else is she doing back there?
Peter North has been writing "serious" SF&F adventures for many years, under another name. But there's only so long a guy can be serious before he starts to go a bit mad.
This is where Peter comes to play.
Inspired by Sword & Sorcery of old and HaremLit of new, Peter North's books are a place where men (and open-minded women) can come to experience the intersection of Fantasy and fantasies.
After rescuing the damsel in distress and stumbling on a void cult, Chaddick and his ladies were hoping for a chance to relax and maybe upgrade their equipment, but alas, promissory notes are not real money and Chaddick still doesn't have much gold to his name. What he does have, is all of the knowledge from the elective classes in Ye Olde Hero University about side quests and their rewards. Finishing one more simple job to get them funds to upgrade themselves before taking the gilded envelope containing his chosen one quest is all he needs... Probably. With an unknown assassin attempting to kill them, some city officials with just a little too much dirt on their records, and a bank that keeps finding paperwork issues to slow down the release of his funds, the party will need to do everything they can to get some cash, even if it means killing rats in the basements of the docks. No way this will be anything more complicated than that, unless you count all of the things that are already going on and add in a snooty hero who thinks he knows better following their every move to document their failures like the worst sort of HOA busy body you can imagine.
How will a simple rat killing quest go sideways? What kind of gear will our favorite adventuring party acquire? Will they be able to keep working together or will they fight like cats and dogs? Who is a good girl? Read this to find the hilarious answers to all of these questions and beg for more.
I really enjoyed this second book in the series. It flowed really well, and held my attention very well.
The MC had a firm LI in the first book, with his sidekick not fully joining in any sexual activity until the very end, but not consummated. That gets addressed in quite excellent fashion in this book, as the MC has to find a way to let her balance her duties as his sidekick and bodyguard, with her desires as a woman and her canine nature. Seeing her struggle with her "good girl" fetish was a delight.
A new LI is introduced, though in a way that is refreshing. It really helps show off how special the MC makes his LIs feel and why he's the Chosen One instead of someone else with a lineage of being the hero. It also shows off his willingness to listen to not only his LIs, but to outsiders who point things out to him. This makes it so he's not doing everything himself.
Some of the comedy moments are pure gold. From the nuisance of another hero that is jealous he wasn't named the Chosen One, to the various magical shenanigans his first LI conjures up, I had quite a few good laughs.
