Mob Justice: A Scavenger Hunt Thriller

Rate this book
IN CHICAGO, JUSTICE HAS A PRICE—AND THE MOB ALWAYS COLLECTS.

After surviving a terrorist nightmare, Justice Department lawyer Blake Hudson takes on a new enemy: the Chicago mafia.

Assigned to the Organized Crime Strike Force, he enters a world that’s nothing like the movies. The Chicago Outfit may still live in Al Capone’s shadow, but its power has evolved—slicker, smarter, and more dangerous than ever.

At its center is Enzo Renzi—a polished consigliere with an Ivy League mind and a conscience buried beneath layers of loyalty. To Blake, he’s the key to bringing the Outfit down. To others, he’s a marked man. Ruthless killers close in, and neither Enzo nor Blake knows who’s behind the crosshairs.

When a secret meeting between rival gangs threatens to ignite a citywide war, Blake races to stop it—only to uncover something far darker than mob violence: a hidden network whose reach extends deep into America’s institutions.

In this explosive sequel to Scavenger Hunt, loyalties blur, alliances shift, and the real power may not belong to the men who hold the guns—but to those pulling the strings.

Thought-Provoking and Addictive

I have not been able to put this book down since I started it a few days ago. It’s one of those books that pulls you in immediately and keeps the tension high all the way through til the end. The pacing is tight, the characters feel real, and the story hits that perfect balance between gritty and thought-provoking.

The book is incredibly authentic from the dialogue, the characters, and the intensity of the situations pulling you right into the story and making you think about justice and loyalty in a deeper way. If you like fast-paced, smart thrillers with substance, this is absolutely worth the read.

Fresh off a high-stakes terrorism case, Justice Department lawyer Blake Hudson is assigned to the Organized Crime Strike Force. With hopes of rehabilitating his reputation with his department and bringing mobsters to justice, he heads to Chicago, only to be surprised by his new ragtag team. They’re unsettling, especially the leader who thrives on taking risks and putting Blake in the crosshairs of some of the deadliest gangsters in the country.

Chad Boudreaux wrote a fantastic book! It kept me on the edge of my seat.... literally. I kept going and going to find out what's going to happen next. I’ve read another one of his books, Homecoming Queen, and very much enjoyed it. Apparently, this is the second in a series, but I think it can be read as a standalone. If I had read the first book, I might have known a bit more about the characters and some more backstory.

When it comes to this book, there is a lot about loyalty, doing what's right, and, well, bad guys. Blake Hudson is a lawyer, and he has a new case to tackle: the mafia. But there is so much more hidden beneath the surface.

Not to give any spoilers away, you need to go into this knowing that you won't be disappointed with the thrill, and A LOT of things will happen. Honestly, it was event after event. Sometimes you think the characters don't get a break! But, it's worth it. You get a glimpse of the characters' personalities and form a connection with them. The ending of the story also leaves you quite satisfied. I especially loved the action scenes that took place. They were quite realistic and entertaining to read.

After failing to rob Joey Russo's barbershop, Enzo Renzi becomes a consigliere in the Chicago mafia. With an Ivy League education, he is being groomed to continue rising through the ranks. However, Luco Falcone is his rival and is waging a war within the mafia ranks.
Meanwhile DOJ lawyer Blake Hudson is working to take down the Chicago mafia. His "girlfriend," Natasha, works for the NSA but is withholding a big secret from Blake regarding his investigation. There is a mole in the organization, and Blake wonders whom to trust.
This is a well written organized crime thriller, featuring many gunfights, with references to Al Capone, Eliot Ness, and others from the past.

Mob Justice is a crime thriller with a strong legal thriller streak, and it pulls those two lanes together better than I expected. The story follows federal prosecutor Blake Hudson as he gets shoved from the fallout of a past covert operation into a fresh fight against organized crime in Chicago, while Enzo Renzi, a mob insider with a complicated past, tries to survive an assassination attempt that opens the door to betrayals, shifting loyalties, and a deeper look at how power actually works. What I came away with most was the book’s interest in the blurry space between justice, loyalty, and survival, especially as it moves between DOJ rooms in Washington and the mob world in Chicago.

This book moves. The opening hospital escape is sharp and tense, and the author has a real feel for dropping a reader into chaos without making the scene feel muddy. I also liked how much personality comes through in the dialogue. People don’t all sound the same here, which matters in a thriller like this. Blake has a dry, controlled edge. Enzo feels more layered than I expected, almost split between polish and danger. And Alyssa Russo has the kind of presence that can tilt a scene the second she walks into it. There’s also a confidence in the writing that comes from knowing the terrain. The DOJ material and the organized crime material both feel authentic.

What I really enjoyed, though, was the author’s choice to keep pressing on the idea that the line between the good guys and the bad guys isn’t clean. That could have turned into something heavy-handed, but here it mostly lands because the book lets institutions and individuals both look compromised in believable ways. Blake isn’t presented as some spotless hero, and Enzo isn’t reduced to a simple villain. That tension gave the book more bite for me. Sometimes the novel leans into its own intricacy, and there were stretches where I had to slow down and reorient myself among the alliances, histories, and reveals. Still, I would rather a thriller aim high than play everything flat and safe. This one has ambition and you can feel it.

Mob Justice delivered what I want from this genre: pressure, intrigue, character friction, and enough moral unease to keep the whole thing from becoming just another shootout-and-conspiracy story. I would recommend it most to readers who like crime thrillers, legal thrillers, and political thrillers that care as much about systems and loyalties as they do about action. It will especially appeal to people who enjoy fast pacing but also want a book with some backbone behind the suspense.

‘The greatest spy technique is convincing people you’re dead’ – Insights into Mafia!

Virginia author Chad Boudreaux earned his degree from Baylor University, served in the US Department of Justice, as Deputy Chief of Staff at Department of Homeland Security and now is chief legal officer for a military shipbuilder. His novels to data – HOMECOMING QUEEN, the hugely successful SCAVENGER HUNT, and now a sequel to that book, MOB JUSTICE - a novel that employs Boudreaux’s work experiences with his natural gift for creative prose and the result is a novel that gains immediate attention and respect for an author destined for important stature!

As befitting this continuation of Scavenger Hunt novel, Chad sets the tone with his scriptive skills is a Prologue set in Chicago, twenty years ago: ‘Enzo Renzi hopped off the elevated train, bumped the deadbolt at Russo’s Barbershop near Adams and Wabash, and entered without a weapon. Carrying weapons enhanced crimes like burglary and theft from small felonies to life-changing problems. Joey “Straight Razon” Russo owned the joint, and despite his nickname, was known to empathize with wards of the neighborhood living hand-to-mouth like Enzo…’ Why this background is significant is explained in Chad’s distillation of the plot: ‘After surviving a terrorist nightmare, Justice Department lawyer Blake Hudson takes on a new enemy: the Chicago mafia. Assigned to the Organized Crime Strike Force, he dives into a world that’s nothing like the movies. When a secret meeting between rival gangs threatens to ignite a citywide war, Blake races to stop it—only to uncover something far darker than mob violence: a hidden network whose reach extends deep into America’s institutions.’

Once again this is a completely satisfying novel that alerts the literary world that a significant new voice has stepped onto the stage. Related with an impressive depth of experience and a fine wry wit, this is a fantastic new novel. Chad Boudreaux is a gifted author to follow. Very highly recommended.

What happens when the pursuit of justice starts to look a lot like revenge?

That question sits at the centre of Mob Justice by Chad Boudreaux. The story follows Blake Hudson, a determined federal prosecutor working with the Department of Justice’s Organised Crime Strike Force. Blake is relentless about bringing down the Chicago mafia, working closely with colleagues like Audrey Klein, Obi, and strategist Burt Morgan as they build a case against powerful criminal networks.

Things grow more complicated with the presence of Enzo Renzi, a brilliant lawyer who once clerked for the United States Supreme Court but is now deeply connected to the Falcone crime family. Enzo is sharp, calculated, and always seems to be thinking a few steps ahead. His ties to figures like mafia boss Giuseppe Falcone and rival leader Eddie O’Banion pull the story into a tense struggle for control inside Chicago’s criminal world.

As the investigation unfolds, the story moves through courtroom strategy, dangerous confrontations, and shifting loyalties. At times, it feels like a chess match between prosecutors and mob leaders, with every move carrying serious consequences.

Mob Justice by Chad Boudreaux shows how messy the fight for justice can become when power, ambition, and loyalty collide. It leaves you wondering whether the line between the good guys and the bad guys is always as clear as we would like to believe.

You might like to wander through a few artistic journals — they’re full of sparks and surprises.

Mob Justice is the second installment in Chad Boudreaux’s Scavenger Hunt Series. Justice Department lawyer Blake Hudson is reassigned from interrogations to address escalating gang rivalries. As the Chicago Outfit plans a critical meeting, a hidden agenda threatens to destabilize its leadership. Enzo Renzi, an undercover consigliere, is positioned to influence the outcome, but his exposure is having serious consequences. Blake must protect Enzo and find out who and why the family is willing to kill him. The story explores the limits of loyalty, love, and justice.

Chad Boudreaux created a masterpiece that unfolds layers of deceit and devotion simultaneously. Mob Justice has the cringe-inducing feel of a dark underworld unseen by everyday citizens. Once Blake is on the case, it quickly becomes a race between shadows. Mobsters are known for meting out their own form of justice and buying off those who can grease the wheels, and Blake becomes the stick that brings the wheel to a sudden stop. This is the thriller that keeps you sitting at the edge of your seat as you race to the end. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and look forward to the next Scavenger Hunt.

This book has so many elements in it that feel authentic to life. Boudreaux also does a great job with visual storytelling, keeping the scenes moving forward with action and active writing. Solid writer, one that I first read a couple of years ago, and I’m so glad to have another book.

But the story? What a wonderful book! The cast feels the right amount of grit to keep the scenes interesting. Enzo is by far my favorite, though I suppose I’m supposed to root for Blake. I like Blake, the protagonist, but there's something satisfying about Enzo not being painted with the typical ‘gangster’ brush you normally see... and the way he works with and interacts with those around him shows his heart and intelligence.

This book really does a great job of showing the perspectives of the justice system and of crime families that fight to keep control, and how easy it is to blur the lines of loyalty. Great book, definitely recommend this book (and Scavenger Hunt!).

This was absolutely captivating from the start. Boudreaux has a way with words, building tension and drawing you in from the first page. The story moves along pretty quickly, and you’ll be just as invested in getting to the bottom of what’s going on as Blake and Enzo. This is definitely more thriller than mystery, however. There’s the mob, and someone behind the scenes trying to take out members of it while Blake is trying to take them down the legal way. I really enjoyed diving back into another Blake thriller, and the change in scenery to Chicago was nice. The story has a pretty quick pace, but doesn’t feel rushed. Final note: while this is a sequel, you don’t have to read book one before this, although I do recommend it so you can get to know Blake better.

Mob Justice grabbed me fast and then absolutely refused to let me relax.
Blake Hudson is thrown into Chicago mob warfare while already carrying the fallout from everything that came before, and the result is a thriller that feels smart, tense, and just a little bit unhinged in the best way. What really worked for me was that this is not just guns, suits, and people saying ominous things in dark rooms. The emotional stakes actually matter. Enzo is especially a great character because he could have been written as just polished and dangerous, but instead he feels layered, conflicted, and weirdly magnetic. I got attached, which is always a dangerous game in a book like this.
The momentum is strong, the dialogue is sharp, and there is a richness to the Chicago mafia world that makes the whole thing feel lived in instead of borrowed. Also, the action scenes? Stressful. Respectfully, my blood pressure was involved.
My one honest hang up is that the book throws a lot at you early with institutions, factions, history, and power moves, so if you have not read the first book, there may be a brief wait, who is that again phase. A few sections also get pretty dense with strategy and structure.
Still, this absolutely won me over. Smart thriller, real emotional pull, and very worth the ride.

Boudreaux grabs you by the collar and doesn’t let go!

The third novel by Chad Boudreaux does not disappoint! Like his prior two novels, Mob Justice grabs you by the collar from the get go and shakes you unmercifully until you’re out of breath, exhausted, and elated all at the same time. Clancy, Child, le Carre - step aside….

Already can’t wait for the next novel!

Chad Boudreaux’s Mob Justice is a gripping, pulse-pounding read that doesn’t let up. Every page crackles with tension, blending razor-sharp dialogue with a dark, cinematic atmosphere. Boudreaux has a knack for pulling you deep into the moral gray—where justice feels personal and every choice carries weight. It’s the kind of book you tear through in one sitting and think about long after.
