This volume contains chapters 116-152 of the web novel and covers | Read on Tapas
This volume is a bit of a mixed bag because I was enthralled by some arcs and bored by others. For the most part, the concert and third comeback arcs were kind of boring to me. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the slice-of-life vibes, but since I'm reading it in a web-novel format on Tapas, those chapters did not leave me with a burning desire to press the "next" button, you know? That being said, I do appreciate the level of detail and immersion we get into their idol career as readers. I am well on my way to stanning TeSTAR, and they're not even real lol
And even in the more "boring" arcs, there were stand-out moments, like Moondae and the gifts. The more we read, the more I understand Moondae. My man is uncomfortable with emotions. He is uncomfortable with the notion of doing something because of them. But he feels a lot. So what does he do? he rationalizes. He builds a detailed and well-thought-out explanation as to why he's doing whatever he is, usually in the form of "investment," in order to justify his actions to himself. All his rationalization sounds like excuses meant to function as a self-defense mechanism. Because if it’s not about emotion, then he’s not attached, and if he’s not attached, then he will be fine whatever happens. If his kindness was really so rational, he wouldn't be thinking about others so often.
It also becomes more and more apparent that everyone else also sees through him (like them using the "fans" to convince Moondae to act how they want, for once). Which is why I desperately want to see how the members view him! It's bound to be so interesting, but we've only been getting outsiders' perspectives so far T_T
While there were some lull moments in the middle, the book opens and closes with a bang. The year-end award season arc was fascinating, especially as an IRL K-pop fan. I have seen "fans" twist whatever they can to benefit their own narrative, as well as how they will discredit groups' work and hard effort willy-nilly, so long as it "benefits" their own favorites. While it's true that the starting point of idol groups differs based on many variables, it's absolutely ridiculous to negate and ignore those group's hard work and effort. So, watching this whole discussion was fascinating, as it aligned so closely with my own observations. It was also interesting to see how it was solved.
But by far, the best and most emotionally devastating element of the book was Moondae's PTSD. My god, that hurt. Our main character often feels infallible. He is extremely level-headed and rational, looks at things objectively, and easily solves every issue that comes his way. He is a rock to everyone in his group, the member everyone turns to. And here he is, absolutely dysfunctional. And he can't even tell anyone why, and worse of all, he can't rationalize his feelings because... well, they're not particularly rational. And he knows it--but for once in his life, he can't rationalize his way out of this hole. But for the first time in a long, long while, he is not alone. There are people around him who care. People who will help and worry about him and force him to take care of himself first or leave their own living room in order not to trigger him, and I'm just--so emo for this group. Seriously, I love it so so much.
Mostly this entire volume can be summed up by the part where I love their dynamic it's truly unhinged.
I hate to say it but at this point Cheongryeo's story is kind of becoming more interesting to me since everything is coming far too easily for Gunwoo/Moondae and TeStar. I would like a drama or scandal to last longer than 3 chapters and have longer reaching consequences please. I will only retract this complaint if it turns out things happening now actually are going to be part of a huge problem in the future. I hate to say it, but it would be kind of fun if Gunwoo dies and has to start over, since I'm apparently only one quarter of the way through this series and it's been two years and three status abnormalities cleared successfully.
