Some okay comics mixed in with some of the worst comics I’ve ever read.

Got this for free at a local book store. Some random issues put together under the Brand New Day name to capitalize on the movie's release. Has around 4-6 different stories, including an Anti-Venom Issue and a Flash Thompson military propaganda one. It's a fine read, some good spidey moments but this is very much just a random little compilation. There's no real storyline here throughout the issues. Some of the art here is God awful imo though. Issue 575 has probably the worst Peter Parker design I've ever seen, as well as some awful faces and mouths.

I read it back when it came out. I didn't much like it then and it hasn't gotten much better over the years.

Eh? Some good, some bad. At $10 it’s not terrible. The punisher issue, enforcers/bookie arc, and unscheduled stop are all very good. The rest was..fine to bad. To be expected with so many different creative teams. I’m surprised they didn’t pick a new full time creative team to make sure this book was a must read after one more day. As is, it’s a mixed bag. Glad I didn’t pick up the omnibus. Hope marvel keeps it up with this compact format.

picture books count kinda. listen i’m re-training myself, it’s been eternal hellpits forever so spider-man felt like a good choice. i see why this arc is considered controversial but i’m not entirely sure why because it’s sorta just like. whatever. the high points are high and the rest is mid to nothingburger.

A disappointing collection of unrelated single issues lazily stapled together to appear like a graphic novel. Horrible and lazy practice by Marvel to make extra money flow from the film’s success.
All it would have taken was just a little care and effort to produce an interesting collection of Spidey issues. But maybe that’s asking too much from Marvel these days.

This is Marvel's first release in a new series of compact comics, and my hopes were so high (especially given how much I loved the "Brand New Day" film). Unfortunately, this was such a disappointing collection. The logline reads, "'Brand New Day' Wasn't Just a Story - It Was an Era!", and I was really looking forward to see what a curated anthology of stories from this iconic era would look like, as I've never read any of the 102 issues that made it up.
I have no idea how they landed on these thirteen stories, and what it say about the quality of the other 89 comics they ommitted, because this collection is a mess. Comprised laregely of joyless, disjointed stories, one of which is built entirely on very ugly jingoism - two of the stories don't even have Spidey in them.
It's impossible to say what the criteria for inclusion was there is no framing provided: no foreword, no letter-from-the-editor, none of the content that typically accompany trade paperback collections of comics, or even Marvel's main compact comic series (Marvel Premier).
Feels like they were relying on hype and goodwill from the new film, and did the bare minimum.

Unbelievably awful. So many writers, only one good story (the story of Flash Thompson losing his legs, before he became Agent Venom). So many artists, but only two or three good-looking issues.
I love this new compact style from Marvel, and the $10 price tag is way better than the other $15 brand they’ve been doing, but they’ll fail if they put shitty stories like this one out. One of the worst books I’ve read in years.

Now I see why nobody likes this run. What did I just read? Just a bunch of disconnected, mediocre issues randomly thrown together with no overarching story or arc whatsoever. Some of the issues had cool art, most of them didn’t. Some where more or less enjoyable, most of them where not. All in all this was just one big disappointment.
Luckily Destin‘s new film (absolutely amazing!) with the same name (Brand New Day) has nothing to do with whatever this was.

The through-lines are stretched real thin and there’s nothing really stringing this collection together. First comic adaptation I’ve read before the film release where I can confidently say the movie will be better

This is a pretty random collection of stories that jump around the 'Brand New Day' run to give readers a taste of this era without committing to 3 omnibus' of comics, and I don't mind this era, despite its many controversies surrounding its inception.
It's a bit difficult to review this, because it reads like an episodic adventure where we focus on one story for a couple of issues, then another, then another, and they each vaguely connect to each other, much like how the episodes of the various animated series' connected to one another. If you like episodic storytelling, this is a decent book to pick up, because it gives you fun Spider-Man misadventures as he stops bad guys and tries to get his life in order, but for me personally, I prefer a serialised approach, and the loose ends were a bit bothersome, like what's the deal with the serial killer framing Spider-Man? Where is the mr Negative story going? What will come of Peter's roommate? I guess I'll have to buy the omnibus' to find out.
My favourite story in here was definitely 'Unscheduled Stop'. It was written by Mark Waid, which is a factor for sure, and was just super engaging throughout. I love the dark and gloomy subway tunnel setting as Spider-Man tries to save these people from the impending doom, all while trying to deal with Shocker, and then there's the stuff with Jameson's dad, and how we get a glimpse into his strained relationship with his son. It's a little superficial, but was my favourite story in here. I also have to give a shout to the Anti Venom issue, that was awesome, and was able to be more mature in a way I found captivating. I like the conflict of Eddie being heartbroken that the man who cured his cancer and gave him hope for life, is the evil crime boss he's trying to stop, I wish this story continued to flesh out this journey more, but it was an engaging hook. The final story I genuinely liked, was the Flash Thompson issue, it was quite powerful, showcasing his time in the Iraq war, and how Spider-Man inspired him to be a better warrior, showing how you don't need a mask to be a hero, and everyone faces the same obstacles as Peter but in different ways. It was simple, but effective.
My least favourite story was probably 'Family Ties', that shit was so boring, I couldn't get into it at all. It's one of the few mr Negative stories, but is completely uninteresting. Hammerhead is lame, the people Spider-Man was protesting are dull, it was a real slog. In fact a lot of the ones from the first half weren't very good, like the one with the Mayans. It wasn't bad or anything, I loved the blizzard setting and the cameos from other heroes, but it's just aggressively mid, and wasn't my jam, which describes a fair amount of stories collected here, like the Punisher one, or the one with the Bookie rigging bets with a fake Spider-Man. I just have very little to say about these stories because they left no impact on me, and were just forgettable.

The portrayal of Peter remains consistent, as this brand new era wants him to be an underdog who gets hard done by literally everyone and everything around him, while still being lighthearted. Spider-Man was the best thing about this book, even if the quality of the stories he was in was pretty uneven. Something that's a bit disappointing is the lack of traditional Spider-Man villains, most of the antagonists are random nobodies, or D listers, and I would've liked to have seen more than Hammerhead; we do get the debut of mr Negative, who's awesome, and the Shocker makes an appearance, but both are in it so briefly that my criticism still stands. In fact mr Negative barely does anything, he just stands around and commands other people, I don't think he interacts with Spider-Man once.
The art is nothing amazing, this era has some pretty mid illustrations in my opinion, with no issue sticking out too much in my mind, I suppose 'Unscheduled Stop' and the Anti Venom ones looked pretty cool, but the art isn't anything special overall.
Although speaking of art, the front cover of this book is beautiful, really stunning and creative, and leaps off your bookshelf begging you to read it, with vibrant colours and stylish use of space, with all the characters on Spider-Man's webbing, looking like the panels of a comic, all tied together by a gorgeous drawing of the man himself front and centre; it's a shame that the image used on this site isn't the direct market cover (although hopefully they've updated it by now), because that's one of the all time best comic covers. I genuinely judged this book by its cover, it was so cool I had to buy it.
Overall, this was really let down by a litany of mediocre stories, half baked ideas, and unimpressive art. There is stuff worth reading here, and I can see why someone would like this, but for me, it was not as good as it could've been.

Most of these story arcs were pretty alright with like one or two great moments that got them included, but they definitely felt like they got better as they went on. I don’t know if the second half of the book really just had better stories or if I just got used to the feel of the run. It was dope to see wolverine at the start although that story was overall only alright. The Hammerhead story was possibly the best one, that was actually crazy. Definitely among the most brutal spiderman stories I’ve read. I was a big fan of the punisher story as well. Mr Negative is awesome so it’s cool that he kind of acts as the big bad in this run. I loved seeing Shocker too in the subway arc. The Flash Thompson story was a highlight, and I enjoyed the AntiVenom story at the end. The bookie one was alright. All in all I wouldn’t say I read anything life changing here, but it’s a solid selection of spidey stories that represent the era and present a diverse spread of things to enjoy.

Some classic Spidey tales wrapped up into one neat, beautiful to look at package (tiny book). While it’s a more condensed telling of the Brand New Day era I do feel it hits some good high points along with a variety of tales to make it feel worth the price. We got classic Spidey team ups like with punisher and Wolverine, we have classic villains such as shocker and hammerhead. The stories range from gang violence and breaking the cycle of violence in the youth in the Bronx, to Spidey battling gods in a snowstorm, to war stories from Flash Thompson, heck even an Anti-Venom story, so it covers a lot of ground. The each story felt unique and interesting enough to keep me engaged and flipping pages. Personal top 3 favs are 1.Lucky Day story 2. Punisher team up 3. Flash Thompson war story. Worth the read for any Spidey fan.

It was okay...
I decided to grab this pocket collection of Brand New Day in light of the moving releasing. I've had it for while then and it's taken me as long to get into it and finish it. Part of this has to do with the fact that the opening story was drawn out and I grew tired of it rather quickly. I couldn't wait to get out of the "snow" part. In hopes that the rest of the trade had more to offer.
There were some things that worked well. Punisher and Spidey have developed quite the relationship and I always enjoy them together in any setting. I thought Mister Negative was quite entertaining as well. I enjoyed the story as well with Anti-Venom.
I think I just wanted this for the memorabilia and artwork, which was explosive in itself. Overall, the book itself just felt like a bunch of random stories pulled at random to hype up the collection. Meh.

3.5. Damn you Goodreads for not having .5 increments in rating
Fun assortment of comics here from the brand new day era. To a degree, it just being an assortment of issues and arcs is to its slight detriment, with lots of overarching ideas being present here but never getting to conclude, as well as a big revelation at the end of the book.
Some issues are definitely stronger than others, as well as art styles. I particularly liked the Hammerhead story and art, and the Punisher story was good too, although the art style wasn’t to my particular liking to be honest.
Overall, it is just a fun time reading some Spider-Man comics even if it doesn’t perhaps reach the heights it feels it could.

3.5 stars. I obviously will enjoy any Spiderman comic, but I did have trouble following some of what was going on. Like lowkey the art was very chaotic during fight scenes and it made it very hard to imagine what it actually looked like. I did like the different crossovers we get in these comics. I loved seeing the Punisher and Wolverine working with Spiderman, and seeing Eddie Brock as well. My favorite story was definitely the train one, I enjoyed the drama with the jury being targeted and it was just a fun story to read. Spider-Man was also especially funny in these comics, he just never stops talking. The art style and plots made me crave a trip to New York, and it also made me even more excited for Spider-Man: Brand New Day coming out tomorrow.

I couldn't find the compact edition listed in Goodreads. I think this edition contains some of the same stories. This is Spidey fan sacrilege but I actually really enjoyed some of these one-off stories. There's some signature quirky and clever writing that you would expect from a good Spider-man story. Fans have a big issue with the status quo change that came along with the One More Day storyline. Some of these one-off story arcs could have been done without the huge marriage retcon. I get that the writers wanted an excuse to introduce an entirely new supporting cast. Jameson Sr could have been introduced without a status quo upheaval.

Spider man is probably if not the most popular comic character of all time and I didn’t really care to much about him. I mean I still liked him and everything but eh. After reading this, I will have to buy more Spider-Man comics because the stories in this were so good and the writing was immaculate. The jokes are ACTUALLY funny. The art work is so nice and appealing. I think this is a great little read and I will DEFINITELY picking up some more Spider-Man comics with my organic webs if you know what I mean!😏

not bad, but not that great either. old huntin’ buddies and unscheduled stop are probably my favorite stories featured in this compact. the rest were pretty forgettable, and honestly? if anything, my main takeaway is that a surprising number of spider-man comics might just… not be that good? i hope marvel keeps releasing compacts like this though, the build quality is perfect.

Maybe I’m too easily pleased but I loved this book. I love Spider-Man, I love how witty he is in the comics. Having not read the majority of the comics though, and not read them for several years, I was a bit confused by a few of the references but nothing google wasn’t able to help me with.

Fun collection of stories from the Brand New Day era. Some more enjoyable, some just okay. But I really liked reading it still, and I'm a sucker for anything Spider-man anyways. So I had fun reading this one.

The book is great quality and very stunning cover. The stories within are really random. A proper mix. Starts very slow and gets better. Really enjoyed some like the flash one and the hammerhead one. However some not so much like the Mayan one.

A pretty weird mix of comics, some have quite hard to read art for the action scenes to the point I don’t understand what’s going on but the Mark Waid double issue is a definite highlight and that gives me hope in reading some more of the Brand New Day run in the future

The book was just kind of whatever. It was more of a compilation than anything. The art was either great, or absolute dogshit. Dialogue was clunky and hard to follow at points. However, it was still a fun read, and does feel like an unabashedly Spider-Man, Spider-Man book.
