When Emmett Spears is gunned down by four killers in cold blood in a saloon in Harper, Colorado, his best friend makes a promise at Emmett's burial to get revenge. Sarah Talbert loves Wade and begs him not to go, but Wade made a promise he has to keep. Armed with a pistol, and a Sharps .50 caliber rifle, he sets out to find the four men. The journey takes him, two aging sheriffs, and an Indian across Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and Mexico following a trail of violence and death that Wade may never recover from.
Richard J. Greene was born in Denver, Colorado, in 1939. After his parents divorced, he enlisted in the United States Navy at seventeen, serving in the South Pacific and taking part in the atomic testing at Eniwetok in 1958. Discharged in 1960, he worked in the trucking industry in Denver, Colorado; California; and Portland, Oregon, where he retired in 1996. He and his wife, Cathy, spend much of their time with their children and grandchildren. An avid golfer, he also dabbles in oil painting and writing for relaxation.
I got this based on reviews on Facebook and Goodreads. I enjoy a western story without all the clichés. This story had a few of them spread throughout, but stayed away from too many. The story was well written and well spaced; even though the idea of revenge is not new for a storyline. What I really liked was the secondary and tertiary characters. They added real backgrounds and a great set of side stories. My only complaint is that author made sure the men being tracked were portrayed as pure evil and their crimes as they were "running" were always despicable. I would have liked a little toning down of that. That said, a well done story and I will definitely read the next in the series. A 4.4 out of 5 rating.
A excellent book. A young man sets out to get the 4 men that killed his friend. Leaving the woman he loves and the home he loves. The challenges and adventures he faces change him to a person he doesn’t know anymore. He becomes a killer a cold person by seeing the evil that these four men committed across the country and the loss of friends he made in his truck. He accomplished his task but returned a different person He leaves to find his self he lost. But the woman he loved and left behind follows him A great book. The things that happen are mind boggling and the evil that happens can only be from satans followers. Did God send him to exact revenge. I think he was God’s tool but he will never be the same for it.
I liked a lot of the story but felt like the author used too much description of some things. Seems like there was a lot of repetition: always saying how dog settled in by the saddle horn, when lifted his leg, or had to "do his business". There were too many commas in a lot of places, not enough in others. I realize Mr. Greene chose to misspell some words to more accurately create the feeling of how they spoke. But there were a lot of others that were not caught by spell check, if Mr. G. even used it. Making a book longer doesn't usually make it better.
This is my first Richard Greene book. It is a very moving saga based in the history of post civil war North America. The author has a wonderful gift and shares it through the adventure of the truly good man Wade Garrison. Good vs evil. Starting book two in the series now. I highly recommend this historically correct novel. It freshens memories of Zane Grey and Louis L'Amour. I really enjoyed this book and could not put it down. Can't wait to explore more stuff Mr. Greene.
Revenge is a dish best served cold. As young men, Wade Garrison's best friend Emmit Smith was unarmed and killed by four ruthless killers. Wade promised to avenge Emmit's death. Having never shot anyone he wondered if he could. He sets out alone following their murderous trail and gains friends with four others that helped him along the way. In the end Wade is a completely different man unable to come to grips of the man he had become. He was now a broken man scared of his new self.
A good enough story but there are a lot of typographical errors. Also the author has a number of geographical and historical errors. For example, it is the year 1872 and there is a 50 year old sheriff said to have been born in Oklahoma. The word "Oklahoma" first appeared in 1866. (Thanks Wikipedia). That kind of thing leaps off the page for me and distracts from the rest of the author's effort.
This is my first book by this r, but definitely not my last. A story well told and full of surprises and thickening plot. I recommend this to all. Not to mention, the first thing that peaked my interest was the mere mention of South Carolina, where I was born and raised…
The story moved a long and there was a lot of excitement with interesting characters. A better proof reader would have helped. Sometimes I had to re-read simple paragraphs to get the meaning and other times he would be referred to as she. I still enjoyed the story telling and recommend the book.
Wade is a strong intelligent man. He is a loyal friend and true to his promise. His journey changes him in ways he does not understand. Perhaps the next book will have the answers.
This is a great book , but it needs some serious professional editing. There are so many misspellings, and mixed tenses that it gets a little hard to follow sometimes. Still a worthwhile read
Enjoyed being introduced to Wade Garrison and his determination to keep his promise. Sometimes the cost of keeping your promise cost you more than you had any idea it would.
A man goes to avenge the death of his friend. Those who killed were animals who wrought destruction in their wake. The man avenged many and lost himself. Highly recommended for adult and teenage readers. On to book two.
This one has a great storyline, though there is a lot of mistakes in it. Don't let they throw you off of finishing the book as it is really worth reading! One mistake was Dark Cloud's grey horse which started out as a stallion and in the end was a mare.
Coming of age, in the harsh reality of the frontier
This appears to be a first book for the author. There is a lack of commas in places which make the text confusing. Overall it is a solid piece and apparently the opening of a series which has potential.
Excellent Western based on Wade best friend being murdered by four mean men. Wade promised he would find them and kill them. This is the sad story of the adventures and friends he made along the way.
Mr. Green, despite not knowing a plural from a possessive, does know how to reach into the heart and mind of his reader. And, as an editor, I can say it wouldn't be a difficult job to edit this one. I'm very happy to have discovered Richard Green's work.
I can not recall ever being so enthralled by a story. I actually felt as though I was there with the people tracking the outlaws. But, I really enjoyed, most of all, the little dog! Can't wait to read book 2.
This is a good story filled with lots of drama. But, it is also filled with grammatical and spelling errors. Way too many. I will not be reading the next book in the series.
Ya took me on a trip, Mr Greene, a trip of blood and thunder, I'm glad I read it, but geez, my friend but tell those damned editors to clean up the grammar and the punctuation, will ya, please?
Started out a little slow but really enjoyed his journey til the end. A little violent at times but I think that's just how the west was in the 1800's. I'll be reading the whole series. I want to find out what he's up to next.
I have always enjoyed westerns and like the morality of an old fashioned style western. This is more harsh and realistic than a Zane Grey but just as well written.
